an ESG fund is kinda like having a food produced labeled 100% nature, there is no legal requirement for it to be any different, but it makes the consumer feel good
I saw beer advertised as being made with "All natural barley." There is literally no artificial barley, it's a grain.
Unless you know how the scores are given, it's hard to trust them.

All companies might fit ESG in one aspect but fail in others. True ESG investing doesn't exist

why blame the funds and not the company itself
The funds are being blamed for their hypocrisy with regards to their investment strategy and philosophy. They claim to be pro green technology and the environment but also invest in oil and gas companies. If you claim to be for something and try to make that something your flagship reason for investing in your fund, but then invest in companies that go against that which you promote you should expect some backlash.

Great holdings for moral returns. Of course many tech firms use minerals mined in the worst of conditions in the third world for their hardware. And also who can forget the age-old, tested and trusted criterion of having at least one woman on a board in investing?
We can impose good behavior on our own miners, but not on other countries. And many exotic metals are only available in a handful of areas.
Investing in ESG funds sounds similar to casino shills who attract suckers into the casino in order to be rewarded in turn ,
just like mutual funds, except about at 30th of the price.

The polarised view against oil and gas industries is unbearable. The same applies to the glorification of electric vehicles in sustainable development. Don’t experts and analysts at least do a bit of research about the energy mix to see what energy resource charge the EVs? Coal or renewables? How can the EVs charged by primarily coal-fired electricity better than the traditional cars run on petrol?
