  • Physical assessment is the baseline of everything we do in nursing and is the first step in the nursing process. This video explains the differences and similarities between a head-to-toe and a focused assessment. It emphasizes the importance of following a methodical approach and focusing on the affected body system to determine a baseline and any interventions needed to proceed with nursing care.

Thank you so much for this. I was wondering if you have videos on pediatrics? Both my peds professor, and peds clinical professor are very vague in their teaching, but extremely specific for the exam and expectations of clinicals. This makes it extremely tough know what to study or what to focus on. I would love to have more guidance. As I have told the school, we are students, who enrolled to learn, not to figure it out on our own. They teach us poorly, but then grading is tough. So many of us are scared to fail

Hi C grig, thank you for your feedback. I have a whole playlist on pediatrics. Check it out here: czcams.com/play/PLGq925lbJaowH4uHoNoQH9PvghxUTZI6r.html
I would also advise you to talk to your didactic and clinical instructors about topics you have a hard time with and ask your clinical instructor to go into that patient room with you for the first few times. For some students, especially if they don't have much experience with children, peds clinical can be intimidating. It helps to have someone in the room who helps you approach the patient at an age-appropriate level to get more comfortable.
      Good luck in your studies!

@@NursingSchoolExplained thank you! I have talked to both. My didactic professor says "she trusts we will be ok, and not to worry too much about it" but then we are still confused on what to focus on. I'm currently having a hard time remembering all the details of development & growth, vaccinations, specific assessments, milestones. I'm ok with adolescents, but newborns and infancy are very complex. For my clinical professor, we have 6 clinical rotations, sadly for the 1st one, we asked for more guidance, but she said we should already know what to do. The only thing she did was check our epic charting and called us if we missed anything, other than that, she said she would talk to us on post clinical conference. The 2nd and 3rd day of clinicals were cancelled as sadly she and her family got sick. We had a virtual clinical this week and we are expected to turn in a concept map, calculate our meds, etc, but meds for peds in the virtual assignment are much different than how they look in the book, so I got confused, I did some research and tried to solve it as best as I could, I'm waiting on her review of my paperwork. Using the lexicomp for the 1st time, without instruction on it has been challenging, I had already gotten used to my Davis Drug book. Like you said, no having previous peds experience and now having real peds patients is intimidating. I want to make sure I provide the best care, but I feel I need more guidance from instructors
