The Psychology of Role Swapping in Overwatch

  • Something you may have noticed in your games, whether it's your own gameplay or others is how differently the roles end up being played depending on the main role of the person playing them. I was curious about this and there's a LOT of psychology behind it, so why not take a dive?

      The original Overwatch was already a bad game, and it never was a good game to begin with. The majority of people are just tired of Triple A devs being hacks, and Overwatch at least has style, which is enough for most bored gamers to enjoy.
      Unfortunately for Blizzard, a bad game with a good paint job is still a bad game.
      Let's talk core game design.
      6v6 games with a roster of 20+ characters to choose from was stupid in MOBA gaming, and it's stupid here.
      Team Size directly correlates to how important each team member is. If 1 player dies in a 2v2, that's half your team; in a 10v10, that's only a tenth. This importance puts extra pressure on players to perform optimally, which segways into the next part about team size:
      Specialization Vs Generalization.
      The ability to excel in many situations will always win out over specializing in a specific role, so long as the team sizes are small. When every player counts, you need to be able to quickly adapt to the situation, which is impossible if you've gimped yourself by picking a hyper-specific character.
      (That's why everybody hated Hanzo, btw)
      Meanwhile, larger team sizes afford enough of a buffer for players to specialize, which often makes teams even more effective when done properly.
      Overwatch... completely and utterly fails to understand these concepts, and that incompetence bleeds into player frustration.
      The fact that Overwatch had problems with [The Meta™] even before the reboot should've been a red flag. You could not play a casual game without forcing yourself to abide by what is optimal instead of fun, or you would be banned due to excessive reports.
      This problem isn't even exclusive to Overwatch.
      6v6 TF2 is straight up an inferior game for the exact same reasons, despite its classes being far more flexible. The only reason it's even remotely respected is because the base game is 12v12, so only competitive players have to deal with the flaws of 6v6.
      One of the only games I've seen that get low team sizes right is CS:GO, and that's solely because nobody is tied to a specific class. Yes, the weapons can influence how you play the game, but you're not restricted to them in the slightest. It's just you, your team, and your enemy.
      The other game I've seen pull this off well was the now defunct Magicka Wizard Wars. Every player had access to eight magical elements they could mix together for various effects and dueling with your magic was purely a test of skill, because you had access to the exact same tools as everyone else.
      Everything regarding Blizzard's inability to "balance" the game, or their lies about PvE... it means nothing.
      Overwatch itself was doomed to suck from the moment Blizzard chose 6v6, and they killed any hope for the game when they made it 5v5.
      Overwatch SHOULD have been a massive 10v10 brawl at the smallest. It'd be a clusterf#ck, but it'd also force the Special Effects department to not just vomit neon colors everywhere and call it a job well done.

  • @airrss
    @airrss Před měsícem +3

    this is why i prefer open queue comp nowadays. because ive come to realize that role queue( im in bronze btw) is just terrible due to people not playing their roles efficiently, whether that be a tank who plays like they are the only person in the game, or a support who frotnlines like a tank, or a dps who doesnt know what to do. And this is pretty much ALWAYS the case (in my games anyways) and due to that i start to play my role differently because the team is just not working. So i really like open queue so that i can switch to any character and make up for lost value. And im at a much higher rank now in open queue. This video really put into perspective what all of this really boils down to. Totally cool!

  • @gentlemankaiju1997
    @gentlemankaiju1997 Před měsícem +15

    Role choice is a lot like picking a fighting game character. You start with a character that looks cool to you, eventually you pick a character the mechanically fits you, then later you pick the meta cause psychologically you tell yourself that's how you win. Then you have ppl that pick whatever they want(or 1 tricks)and you have to play around them or play your own game in a team focused hero shooter, with the 5v5 format and stat/ability changes encouraging this playstyle.

    • @nelsonjovan9460
      @nelsonjovan9460 Před měsícem

      As a fighting game player that is not at all how we play lol. The first two are correct, pick someone cool, get better then start testing other characters till you find one who fits your style, and when you get good with them you start trying out other characters to get good with all of them so you know how to counter them and what match up is good against others, or to learn other characters weaknesses so you can use your bread and butter character more efficiently.

    • @gentlemankaiju1997
      @gentlemankaiju1997 Před měsícem

      @@nelsonjovan9460 So in other words I'm right ("not at all" ,then proceeds to say I'm right)but you wanted to show you know fighting a game term ( which I'm not sure your even using correctly since BnBs are just reliable combos)? Of course the last part only applies to OW, fighting games aren't designed for 5v5 team combat?

    • @nelsonjovan9460
      @nelsonjovan9460 Před měsícem

      @gentlemankaiju1997 not at all correct you need to learn to read you said you eventually pick up the meta because psychologically you tell yourself that's how you win. What I said was we don't pick up the Meta we learn the entire cast to perfect our preferred characters and learn to counter others better. picking up the meta means to play characters that are high tier and have the highest win percentage because of how good they are and to not play them means your most likely going to lose but that's not what I said learning everyone is not playing the meta. Bread and butter does not just refer to the combos pal maybe learn the terminology, bread and butter is used to mean something you do/ use to be the best at obtaining your goals. So i.e. yes combos, but also a character your extremely proficient with, maybe a map you know very well, or a match up you know your very good against. Please don't try to sound intelligent when you can barely read or know what terms mean

Why not go for the easy example like smash bros?

Running around unseen while constantly buffing my teammates, disrupting the enemy and hacking health packs… like they should have put her in the support category for the mode. Maybe they could have given her team heck ability some healing overtime effect in addition to the shield buff.

    Back on ow1 release, I got hooked on the game literally because of d.vas gameplay and mei (as a former pyro main), but after my friends came in, they all settled in their most confortable roles, so dps was taken, and one of the guys started playing d.va 24/7 and I couldnt keep up, so I started playing main tank, during about 2~4 years, that was the only thing that I touched in the game, but after so long, all my friends started to leave the game and a little while after the last one left, I decided that I was tired of playing tank on that asasine game and went support... in less than 2 weeks, I got an higher rank than my tank playing ana/bap and stayed there as long as I played ow as my primary game, that was absolutely wild to me, like, ffs, I dedicated years of my life playing tank, to now discover that I am a freak at supp? Then I started to notice why... I was so used to viewing the game while playing tank and how a tank should play, that as a supp, I was (trying to) doing everything I aways wanted my supp to do while playing tank. Being frustrated with my teamates on my main role, made me great on a role I had like 3 hours on before that lol

    • @BandannaBread
      @BandannaBread Před měsícem

      Lowkey though, I have sort of noticed that I tend to play into whatever the Tank is doing a lot, because I generally know what they'd want. I have to play basically every Tank, or at least know what they do, so it helps me figure out when they'd want something, who I'd want to have on my team as that character, or even when to use certain abilities like pulling back a Brawl or Dive Tank that got a little too in over their head.
      For the last point, a lot of the Tanks I play with notice that I'll pull them out of bad situations as Lifeweaver, and end up playing more aggressive because of it, for better or worse. My pulls for Brawl and Dive Tanks are generally okay, but I still have times were I end up screwing the Tank out of a play. Just need to learn more lol
      One more thing is that I'm not in Masters+, so it's expected that everyone is going to be making some mistakes. Having the comfort from feeling like someone's got your back in case things go poorly helps a lot of less experienced Tanks play better (Mainly because they're not always questioning themselves and being too nervous to take space). It feels like sort of a safety net, and it's nice for me to help people have fun with it.
      Also Tank is miserable 90% of the time, so I don't really feel like shitting on the Tank is going to really help anyone lol. They put up with enough as is
