  • How I made a 16 inch wheel for my rats! Enjoy! (Side note but when using a drill...don't copy me lol. Instead its probably best to drill on a table where you can't accidentally drill through your floor, something I almost did once or twice!)

    You can attach the middle of the spiner to the pan and the 3 holes to the piece of wood. Put a nut or 2 between the middle hole on the spinner and the wheel. The 3 screws to 5x5 piece of wood which has 2 or more hang bolts on the outside.

    If using a wood bracket for the cage mount I'd recommend a longer/wider piece to brace against more cage bars to cut back on wobbling.

    Thanks for the idea! Our pan should be coming tonight. We inherited a wheel with our girls, but it is only 11 inches, and the one who loves it has outgrown it. I have set up the fidget spinner and two pieces of wood (we will attach it to the cage). I’m excited to get the pan and try it out.

      In the end, the fidget spinners didn’t work for us, but we ended up getting a lazy Susan ball bearing, and it works well. Ours that loved the smaller wheel wouldn’t use it at first, though. We tried to bribe her, but she wouldn’t do it. We also lined it with felt to make it more comfortable for her feet. About a month or so after we made it, she started using it. When she started, she would hop off as soon as we came into the room. She didn’t want us to know that she liked it. :) Now, she doesn’t really care about us watching and we hear it every night.

    Hey I’m really needing your help, I’m trying to introduce my rats using the carrier method but am confused roughly how long they should be in each stage for? Should I keep them in the smallest cage until they sleep together? Without any breaks? How long generally does each stage take? Thanks xx

    • @MyPerfectMischief
      @MyPerfectMischief Pƙed 5 lety +1

      Jenna Roesch - hi there. I’ve used this method with my rats and I used the guideline given by ‘isamurat’ from ratforum.com. From what I understand, length of time depends on how quickly everyone gets along. Once they start sleeping together, you can then transfer them to a larger (but still small) cage. After becoming buddy buddy, you can add an item or two, such as a flat hammock, but nothing they can hide in. See if you can find that article, as I found it very helpful. I’m on my tablet and don’t know how to copy and paste the link, otherwise I would :/

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  Pƙed rokem

      Nope, plastic works just fine! The only issue is some rats will eventually chew the plastic, but if its the hard plastic pans I'm thinking of (the colored ones) then its hard for them to get a grip and so they typically don't chew it.

      Considering I’ve had the plastic one for years and it doesn’t smell I don’t that that’ll be an issue. Maybe after a few years it would smell but by then I imagine I’d have to replace it anyways due to the metal pieces warping over time (at least I assume they will, maybe they won’t).

      As long as you center the holes and have long enough screws then no. My main issue was that my long center screw was only just large enough to go through the PCV pipe, meaning that it would get loose and start to rattle. if I had a longer screw for the middle or wasn’t using PCV (at first I used a wooden stand which worked really well but I was afraid it would start to smell because I hadn’t coated it) then it would be much better.
