The GMC and Chevy trucks look great, very nice looking interior. Beautiful trucks. I just don't trust their long-term reliability. I keep vehicles for a long time. I would take the Taco for that reason. Love its simplicy and old-school form.
And I am a realist these trucks are perfectly capable of lasting 10 plus years just fine, 20 if you do proper maintenance. I got the 2022 canyon much better ride more comfortable I test drive both. Much better everything. Feels great to have a vehicle not made of plastic and it doesn't sound like a little car when I crank it.
@@jonathanwilliam980 hope it lasts a long time for you. I test drove a canyon and ranger before buying my taco. They do drive good and more power for sure. I just love the heavy feel of the Tacoma. It's a classic throwback and has the rugged feel of old-school trucks. The thing is ancient in form but that is what we love about it lol. The Tacoma is not for everyone, I get it. I don't drive mine long distances. It's primarily my work truck on our property.
I had a Chevy with 500,000 miles I had to sell it I keep seeing these comments on how reliable Tacomas are and mine broke. I u treat ur truck bad it won’t last I bought a newer Tacoma and it also broke down never buying a Japanese vehicle again
@@jonathanwilliam980 absolutely agree
@@alexisgonzalez5927 I don’t believe you one bit, you are a pure lier
I'd take the Colorado. That thing is beautiful inside and out and would have me turning my head back to look at it when I walk away in the parking lot. But they're about to reveal the new Tacoma so lets see what happens.
Great video and rating system with side by side videos. You did a good job of making it an apples to apples comparison. I would like to have seen more information/comparisons of the off-road capabilities such as rear locking differential and crawl control. Also I noticed that the largest point gains for the Colorado mostly came in the interior and the tech portion. This may not be as important to many people who will USE their trucks for work or off roading!
Cool video! I have owned a Colorado, a Silverado, Sierra and a Suburban. Three of these ended up having transmission problems, with the Colorado and Suburbans transmission completely frying and needing replacement. The Colorado had 70k miles and the Suburban had 55k miles. $7k to replace the transmission at the dealer (BTW, I baby my cars and barely ever towed anything). Now I own a Toyota (my third one) and have NEVER had a issue with them. For me, Toyota is the most reliable, durable and keeps its value better than any truck. I'll never go back to GM. Cool trucks for sure, great looking and comfortable to drive but Im all in on Toyota now and for good.
The GM may try to sell you on all the bells and whistles, but I choose reliability. My 2018 Colorado only lasted me 2yrs before issues started. I love my Tacoma
Respect ur opinion but I'd definitely go with the colorado. Never had issues with mine. Have a 2010 with 160,000 miles and still no issues. Have multiple friends with colorados 2015 or newer and they haven't had many issues if any. Maybe urs was just a lemon or maybe we are all lucky lol. Also the 2.7l 4 cyl high output colorado has more horsepower and torque than the 3.5l v6 and more towing capacity. These are important to me but obviously not everyone
@@beastmode_bumblebee a small turbo engine will never outlast a NA v6 thats just a fact
Some things you didn't mention that the Colorado offers over the Taco... Colorado offers integrated break controller, rear disc brakes and auto 4wd.
Yeah…what’s the deal with Tacoma and their rear drum set up. I’ll probably look to upgrade my brakes with wilwood front and back…
I like the new Colorado, but I still would prefer the simplicity and basic ness of the Tacoma, and I'm happy that the Tacoma still offers a 6 speed manual :))
Great video - love the objectiveness throughout, especially the sound measurements. Well done! I like the Colorado, and also the "brother" Canyon. Very helpful.
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful!
Have you ever owned a Colorado or canyon?
Have you owned a Tacoma or tundra?
They aren’t close.
Gm is a disposable truck.
I haven't tried driving a Colorado yet. I'm still rocking my 5 1/2 y/o Tacoma. Still ride very smooth at the moment. No major problem, I just Replaced the tires after years.
The Tacoma is hard to beat on resell value
My choice is the Colorado by a mile. Nice test.
The new GMC canyon is truly on a class of its own. It’s really nice inside and out. I own a Tacoma and completely love it! But this new Colorado and canyon, specially the Canyon it’s aggressive and the interior is luxurious for a midsize truck. If we’re to trade my Tacoma I would definitely consider the GMC Canyon. Great Job GM.
Toyota will last longer than any truck
Dude Gm is sadly trash now.
I cant wait for the new tacoma to compete with these trucks
don't get a GM unless you want a money pit
I have a 2017 Tacoma TRD OffRoad with a bunch of mods ~70k miles on it. I've had it sideways in OffRoad trails, bounced of old river beds in the mountains of Tennessee, jumped it on hills and I literally have had to make zero major repairs. I still have the original brake pads/drums on! However my head unit amp did blow out, which made me lose audio but guess what? I found like 4 sites who specialize in replacing it with custom units and have one at more door this week. Plug and play and keep on moving. The OEM head unit in the Tacoma SUCKS. But it did the job it needed to, is easily replaceable and isn't hardwired into the car like a tumor.
The Tacoma powerplant is not fun but there are turbo and supercharger kits that you can slap on from names like Magnuson. New ECU/TCU tunes are always available such as KDMax and Orange Virus that really improve the Tacomas driveability. I also can find a Tacoma off road mod shop in every state almost.
The Tacoma is a winner in ease of use and reliability. It's all about how you use it to make it fun. It's not a pavement princess and will disappoint all you Chevy/Ford/GMC fans who are used to 20k in bells and whistles and spending your time at the store talking about how Tacoma boys got soft hands lmao
There is a guy on youtube with 300k on his 3rd gen Tacoma. In the end, that is what really matters. Toyota all the way.
Ive done some stupid things with my 2010, and it just keeps going and going
At 46k with those options I’d rather just get the ZR2. Barely more.
Great review! I’ve owned a 19 Tacoma and it was perfect. This new Colorado however in my opinion is a great looking truck all around. I am very curious to see the new Tacoma (hopefully tomorrow) and see how it stacks up against some of the new updated mid sized trucks.
@Professor Heisenberg I hope they bring back the manual transmission on the Colorado. That Eaton Fuller manual transmission was nice
Very well done comparison. Thank you.
Awesome review!!! Definitely help me in my decision making on my new 4x4 truck!
Personal experience the Tacoma is going to last longer with fewer issues and resale values are the best for a reason.
That’s Toyota vs GM in general. Tacoma vs new Colorado with updated everything could be a different story.
Lol
Likely no. 100% the Tacoma will remain tight and quiet, reliable and dependable.
No chance will that be the case for the GM.
Test these two trucks with 150K miles
It won’t be close.
And, I’d expect the new 2024 Tacoma will be even better
🤓🤓🤓
I liked the Colorado till I saw the new price. Removed standard things like cruise, made heated seats and wheel expensive options. Ordered what I knew I'd be getting and got a tacoma.
Well the CEO from GM needs her BIG bonanza bonus, so hence the big $$$ amount 🤔💥🏆
I struggled over all these choices including the Ford Ranger. I settled on the Tacoma TRD Offroad. Some of the bells and whistles will be missed, but one thing that wasn't mentioned is the vast expanse of aftermarket stuff for the Taco.
My choice is always Toyota Tacoma, I guess everyone ready know the reason what & why.
Compare them in 10 years. Reliability above everything else.
Exactly!
You will find the Colorado running through the wholesale lot looking for its next victim😮
Yes, that is the Toyota Creed. Power, driveability, comfort, and capability mean nothing. Who cares if you max out payload hauling 4 people around? Muh reliability!
Guess my 17 year old Silverado with 358k miles should try harder to be reliable? Look at the wastegate issues the new tundra is having, the new Toyotas aren’t the same as the old ones.
toyota is one shady company out there don’t for that, $15k-$25k above retail they were asking
How much boost is the colorado pushing? I like the power output but i can't be the only who still thinks tacoma 3.5L is a proven 300k miles engine , colorado maybe 100k miles. Boosted engines are a gamble
20 psi. I know someone that has that engine in their seirra, and the turbo already sounds dead.
A guy pulled up to our shop the other day and his Colorado had shut off on him. I asked him if he needed a jump. He said thats not the problem. He said it was shutting off every time he honked the horn. Sure enough, he was right. He said it had been to the shop many times and still wasn't fixed. My folks have always owned Chevys and always had problems. You can have your chevy. I'm keeping my yota.
My Chevy had 500k miles on it I’ve learned if u treat ur things right they last but I owned a Tacoma and it broke down I always treated very nicely u can keep ur Toyota I’m keeping my Chevy
@@alexisgonzalez5927 You don't count the 450,000 miles it was towed behind a wrecker to the dealer to fix it again. LOL.
The Colorado is really nice and all but if I'm buying a new vehicle I want it to last me 15-20 years and not be expensive to maintain so the Tacoma is always a safe choice
but yotas are it’s expensive to begin with 😂
You forgot to mention after Ford, GM leads in recalls. That is worth 10 points
Taco had issues when it came out, but Toyota took care of them. If you're in the market to buy new and reliable for years, get the taco as it hasn't changed and Toyota has made the necessary changes to make it reliable. The same won't be said when the new taco comes out. It'll have its issues and Toyota will once again work on getting the kinks out.
I'm a Toyota fan, but these Colorados look great!
nice comparison keep up the good work!!
Thanks, will do!
No matter how good or “better” the competition gets, Toyota fans are loyal. Admittedly, Tacomas resale value and reliability is hard to ignore.
Do you know the lug pattern and offset of the colorados wheels?
The look of the Colorado is much improved. The Colorado being a new model, how reliable it will be is a big question. The new Tacoma is rumored to be revealed in two more days, it also will be all new. The Tacoma is a better bet in my opinion. The American manufactures seem to build these mid-size trucks more as an afterthought, whereas the Toyota is given a priority. Just my 2 cents.
I would agree. My GMC terrain has a similar i4 engine, and my PCV valve caused my rear main seal to blow at 80k miles.. 3k to fix. I take reliability over a slight power bump any day.
Facts!!
ikr Colorado finally made a good looking one… all the past ones are ugly asf
It's a valid question. I'm still on the fence. I did look into it, and it's really not all that new. The motor has been out for a few years in the Silverado, only now with forged internals. The 8 speed trans has been out for a while, with questionable reliability. It is touted as the 2nd gen...we'll see.
I test drove both, as well as the Canyon and Frontier last month. They’re all expensive, but I went with the Taco.
The others were comfy though. The Frontier had the worst drive, but wasn’t bad by any means. Solid truck.
The Canyon was the nicest, but Hated the digital dash in the Colorado higher trim. Both almost didn’t feel like trucks.
Don’t care about updated tech. Just want tech that works and that I use.
The Taco just checked all the boxes for me, and I like the ride height and look better. Reliability certainly stuck out. My 2010 Sierra was always in the shop when I took it off the highway (front diff), then trans blew at only 140k.
Bottom line, I don’t think any of these trucks are trash. Only truck I don’t like is the Ridgeline, but that’s cause it’s barely a truck. At that point, buy a Highlander.
I just ordered a 23 tacoma. It's was also much cheaper than the frontier, ranger and colorado. I didn't want a 4cyl or 12 inch screen. I wanted a reliable truck. The aftermarket was also a difference maker.
@@ryanlavallee3239 I gotta recommend getting your Taco tuned bro. Makes all the difference in the world. My buddy got his 2017 tuned when he bought it new and he’s about to hit 250k. I got the OTT tune immediately. The 2GR-FKS is an amazing engine. Congrats btw
The tacoma is the only one with port injection/ direct injection too.
@Bruce Wayne I've read that on the boards, Thanks. Prob not going to touch it until my warranty is up. Honestly tho power and torque mean nothing to me but well see how it drives tho after break in.
Those Off-Road wheels are 16" on my Tacoma. Did they jump up to 17" ?
Really like your videos. I was in the market for a new vehicle and spent a lot of time researching mid sized trucks. I've driven a Toyota Camry for years and liked it a lot, so I was initially going for a Tacoma. Unfortunately, the seating position in the Tacoma was a deal breaker. I'm about 6'1 and even with the adjustable seat, my knee would hit the Tacoma's steering wheel whenever I went to change pedals. I ended up ordering a 23 Colorado and it is supposed to arrive soon :)
Thanks! Congrats on your upcoming truck!
Hopefully that Colorado will last as a Toyota Tacoma 🤞🏻🤞🏻😊
The new Tacoma is amazing! However I’m not sure about the hybrid part. They should have made a twin turbo v6 and just a turbo four cylinder. It would also be nice if they made a little diesel engine for it but I’m extremely happy with new new aggressive look on the Taco. Specially the white and black Tacoma. I hate the red seats… I would get black interior instead of the pimp red.
Hey thought it would be helpful to provide an update. The Colorado I had ordered unfortunately was one of the trucks that got hail damage from the storm in Missouri a few weeks ago. Thankfully, the dealership informed me of this on their own accord. However, there was still no estimated delivery time. I had ordered a Z71 with most of the options picked, so I think it is reasonable to speculate there is a part that is in shortage or just unavailable that is causing the delay. I had been waiting / saving up for a while at this point, so ended up switching back to Toyota and got a Tundra. I still really like the new Colorado's, but there were just a few too many red flags popping up to continue waiting for the particular truck I had ordered. Can't wait to see the eventual 2024 Mid-size truck show down video! : ) P.S. I like the Tundra a lot. It is definitely a big boi in comparison to a mid-size truck, though.
I’ve been driving an 18 6.2 Denali for a couple of years after 4-5 years of a taco. When the 6.2 ate the cam I found a restored salvage 19 ZR2 whilst the Denali was under the knife. Sure missed the ease of parking a smaller truck and the ZR2 is way more off road capable than any truck I’ve had. Denali for towing the enclosed trailer with the ZR1 but the ZR2 for most everything else!
Just a request, but could you include front seat leg and headroom in your videos as well? Us taller drivers would really appreciate it! Otherwise great comparison as always.
I'm sticking with Toyota. Tradition, community, name, quality and reliability. See ya in 200,000 miles Chevy Colorado!
When will the Colorado be arriving at dealerships? I look everyday and it only shows in transit.
I talked to a dealership Friday and they just received 3 all sold
New Colorado got me 👀 👀
Which one has a better turn radius? Also let's see what a car seat looks like in the back.
Very well done
And all of a sudden a perfectly good truck is now inadequate.
Just FYI any 3rd gen Tacoma with a key fob has hidden remote start feature standard 😉Press lock 3 times and on the third press and hold for about 5-8 seconds and it will remote start the Tacoma and keep it on for 10 minutes.
But does that end after the one year trial?
Nope, my 2021 TRD still has remote start.
The Chevy turbo plus motor can be factory tuned (flashed at the dealership) to the ZR2 performance. This costs $399 and does not affect your warranty. (An extra 40 lb-ft of torque.
Chevy/gm definitely have hit a home run with the interior but I will have to stay with the reliability and resale of the tacoma....
over rated af. My 2011 tacoma was an off road package everyone only offered 8-12k for it.
The Colorado seems to be the truck to get based on numbers however the TOYOTA is known for its reliability and aftermarket parts also the price retains its value
Rubbish. Learn and educate yourself boy.
If the Chevy Colorado, with regularly scheduled maintenance, lasts more than 80,000 miles before a major repair is required, I’d be surprised. The Tacoma, with regularly scheduled maintenance, will most likely still be running at 300,000 to 400,000 miles.
@@thadlm2698 exactly money well spent. Sometimes newer is not better but time will tell

I love both, But I like Chevy Colorado guys.
I’m buying me a New Z71 Chevrolet Colorado ! ,,, I can’t wait !
We shall see what miles and years equate to residual life . If I was guessing after 100 k miles Toyota will be worth 10 grand more.
Tacoma, it is for me, last longer and no problems...
As it stands, with the technology, age, and design, I'd get the Colorado
Just give me a headlight dial/stalk please it would be perfect if they did
Thx for the video, just FYI those Tacoma wheels are actually 16 inch wheels 😉
Reliability and resale > fancy new tech which may be prone to recalls or owner dissatisfaction. I love how the new Colorado looks though. I'd give it a little time for the kinks to be fixed.
I think the chevy has hundreds more pounds of payload and towing capabilities. Also, I was too crowded getting into a Taco at 6' so the chevy would be an upgrade there too. Not a fan of small engines with turbos though.
this current generation tacoma is still far better
As someone who’s owned Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Jeep and now a Tacoma. I can tell you from experience the Chevy is very comfortable which is good so you stay comfortable waiting for the tow truck
The Colorado will turn to sh-t in a few years.😅
@@charlesjackson1700 by 45k miles it will have serious problems
@@tactlcal_bacon_bits4773 That's for sure.👍. They are made weak. They just don't hold up. Fuel injectors go out start having oil leaks.. check engine lights..😮

Why does Chevy have such a terrible warranty compared……if I can’t afford full-size then I’m getting something I can trust a little more. Toyota for the win
That's easy. It's because GM quality sucks.
Because GM does not want to be on the hook paying for all the repairs that Colorado will need. The quicker GM is out from under warranty the quicker they make money off the owners paying for all the repairs it will need out of the owners pocket.
only concern his how a turbo engine will last in few years as a housework vs tacoma atmospheric engine
I'm always preferring to get an "American" built truck (even though some of the parts are from other countries), especially when you need repairs and/or parts, they are much cheaper that an imported vehicle built trucks!
Don't forget to include residual values James. That is a very important factor when purchasing a vehicle. I won't insult you by suggesting which truck will be worth more after 3,5 or 10 years. The Tac's reliability record in not good compared to Toyota's cars, but then again, nor is Chevy across the range.
Hate to break it to you but a LARGE percentage of all Tacomas are built in the US. I'd dare say they are more American then whatever brand you put them up against. Toyota has made a huge commitment to be an American friendly corporation and continues to scale their manufacturing in the US, instead of outsourcing shit to Canada or South Korea like the Big 3 have. Just food for thought
I wonder if the Colorado would still be as solid after 300 k miles
No…
Hellllll no !😢 A rolling pile of JUNK😊
Any truck with 300k is going to be junk. Tacos are not reliable like they use to be. All these electronics are basically the same. It’s computers now.

You can't down play the fact that the toyota will retain its value far longer than any other truck in its class, and that it will out live any other truck out there. More bang for tha buck boys.😅
A better and more equal comparison for the Colorado would be the 23 Nissan Frontier. The two literally have the same horsepower except the Frontier is NA. The Tacoma on the other hand still reign supreme in terms of reliability and resale value. Only the 2nd gen Frontier has come close to being its rival in the mid size truck category.
Don’t give a damn! For $46000 before taxes, they all will above $50000 ! Nothing worth that much money 💰! 😂😂😂😂😂
I think in my opinion the ultimate key is reliability you can have the most greatest and latest gadgets but ultimately the long lasting engine will always win.
Toyota reliability all day.
Did the Chevy make it back to the lot?
Life long Gm guy here. That being said new Gm vehicles are the biggest pos on the road. I bought a 2023 Pro4x and couldn’t be happier.
Good video
2023 GMC Canyon AT4 even nicer I think then Colorado
Thanks 👍
My biggest gripe on my 2020 Colorado is the storage bins under the rear seats. Why not just make the floor completely flat? Terrible use of the space, and unfortunately they continue this trend in this new model
That is a bit of a mis-match. The TRD Off-Road is equivalent to the Trailboss, not the Z71, which focuses more on highway performance.
20 years from now, I’d love to see this test run again. Not many Tacoma owners running to the Chevy dealer to grab one of these z71s.
That's specious reasoning. Truck guys rarely change brands to begin with. By that logic the best selling vehicle in America for the past few decades, the F-150, is better than both of these.
@@dtay8913 long term reliability.
Now this is one exciting comparison!
Until reliability is as proven as the Taco, the Toyota truck owners are not leaving.
I do think the new gadget trucks will however appeal to the newer truck buyers who more recently got into thinks like winter sports or going out to parks for vlogging and social media. They will want the fancy stuff despite resale value and reliability.
Exactly
100% agree
Keeping my TRD TACO..😊
Yap me too keeping my taco better
I will be picking up my Colorado in 2 days
Congrats on your new Colorado!
Test drove both just today. Tacoma is much more reliable but dated AF. Chevy feels great and more in control of the road. But when it's close to 100K will definitely trade it in.
I got the chance to test drive a new Colorado this weekend, 90 miles on the truck and it broke down and went into limp mode lol. I don’t think Toyota has anything to worry about
A new Chevy vs and old Tacoma? I'd still buy a Tacoma.
I own two Tacoma's 2001 ,2023 Toyota's are more dependable hands down and 2023 is the last time you can get the v6 which has proven it's self, the 2024 Tacoma's will have the four cylinder twin turbos ,I'm not a huge fan of turbos especially twin turbos but I would still by the Tacoma's .
My son just bought a Colorado Z71. We test drove a brand new Tacoma and it wasn't even close. The difference was massive. The new Taco may be different but the old ones felt like plastic crap. Seating position was horrid.
The exterior styling is great. All that piano black plastic in the Colorado is a instant no-go for me. I also learned there is no headlight switch, you have to go into the infotainment to control the headlights. What the hell GM.
Top trim level is the ZR2 Desert Boss, Z71 is just below it.
Isnt it the 22 taco 23 hasn’t came out or am i wrong..???
2023 models are on dealership lots right now
I have that exact tacoma and you have the pricing wrong here. You don't even have the new led light updated? That tacoma as is more of 43-44k
I'm 100% sold on the Chevy Colorado z71 2023. I think they should honor a 2 years period like the tacoma though. 1 year is kinda scary if the vehicle doesn't hold up!❤❤
And that’s why no one is buying chevys or gmc lmao

Idk why, but the Tacoma still looks better than the redesigned Colorado. Only reason I bought a Colorado is because it was cheaper. But they're cheaper for a reason.
Thank you for the in-depth review of these two trucks. I'm now going to go jump in my Nissan Frontier, the best of them all.
Rear drum brakes, transmission can’t decide what gear it wants to be even after all the updates I’ll take my chances with the Colorado. Tacoma has been living off its past gen tacoma reputation for to long now.
Yes, take your chances. As a GM/ASE Master mechanic/technician who owns a Taco, I need more work when your Colorado breaks so I can make more money. 🤑🫡
Sad to say this to you buddy but Tacomas will always have better reliability and reputation than any GM or Ford truck and the most important think no matter what year tacoma is, this truck will always last longer than any American maker truck, PERIOD.

That won’t take long. 😊
In California that price for the Colorado is the base model ! Sad
King Tacoma has ZERO to worry about with this Chevy with a 8-speed transmission with class action against it.
Also, King Taco has different bed sizes and different cabs. Cheap Chevy has just one size.
King Taco has differnt engine sizes. King Taco has manual and automatic. Cheap Chevy garabge is one engine and trans.
King Taco has port and fuel injection. Cheap Chevy has carbon sludge direct injection only.
King Taco is resale king in America because it is king. Do NOT buy cheap cheevvvvvvy.
The upsides to Chevy always seem to be visual. Something about a Chevy just LOOKS right
Tacoma is 1000% more reliable and will outlast the Colorado by a long shot. You can talk performance and fancy gizmos all day, but I’ll take Tacoma’s reliability all day every day.
I think reliability goes a long way for sure, but even me as a die hard Tacoma fan has to admit it’s super outdated and not worth 40k+ for their more packaged ones, and I have to acknowledge GMs efforts in making Toyota realize they have to step up their game, I’m waiting for the new Tacoma reveal next week to see what’s Toyota brings to the table
@@EpticityOG that’s the point of a Tacoma. To keep the outdated stuff and make slow changes, cause it’s proven and it WORKS! The average Tacoma owner like myself don’t care about the newest gadget. The new gen with its 2.4L turbo unfortunately won’t be as reliable IMO. But we’ll see.
