My Dad lost his arm exactly where you lost yours, he was brush mowing and hit a tree stump knocking him off the tractor. This happened in the 60's. All his life he had a hook for a hand, but that didn't slow him down. He was a pipe fitter, welder, and a wood worker. He owned a welding shop and a hardware store. He also built 2 beautiful home's for his family. He passed away about 8 years ago, how I truly wish he could have seen this technology come out.
much better tech than that in prosthetics Just much more expensive. That is low tech

@Del Cox - I think that there are a ton of unboxing videos that are worth watching, but this probably isn´t the right place (or the right video) to discuss about it.
Look up for peoples reaction to seeing colors for the first time with these special glasses they have out. So cool
You should check out some of the videos where people unbox glasses that let them see color for the first time. A good watch as well.
deaf people hearing sound for the first time brought a tear to my eye.

Reminds me of a comic strip where a superhero asks another superhero about what powers his magic gauntlet (prosthetic hand) grants him.
He replies that it allows him to pick things up. To shake hands with people. To open jars.
The superhero asks him "No no, but what SUPERPOWERS does it give you?"
The guy replies: "That IS a superpower."

It's scary to imagine that that there are people in the world that can't even enjoy the simplest of things. I legit can't imagine being excited over opening a bottle, since it's something automatic at this point.

Watching this is special. Amazing. I was raised with my amputee Grandfather. He lost a leg below the knee in 1945. The first leg I knew him to have was a home carved wooden yoke, fastened by buckled leather straps. This was on top of a strut made from 3/4" galvanised water pipe, and a rubber bung at the bottom. I recall him returning from the limb factory with his new fibreglass leg. At its base was a rubber disk - no ankle, and no foot. He fizzed with celebration - it is so light - those guys are miracle workers. For him that was the peak of prosthesis technology and always would be. He is long gone now, but I often see modern prosthesis and robotic assistances - and each time I see them, I imagine how it would blow his mind. Truly wonderous. Can you imagine what comes next any better than he did?
They get much more sophisticated these days.

What amazed me was that the arm 'knew' to put enough pressure on a paper box to hold it firmly without crushing it.
@@mohork True, but remember, she hadn't "trained" it yet. She just read the directions to push and hold the button, and it still had enough 'native knowledge' (aka feedback programming) to not squeeze too hard. It will be interesting to see how much finesse she'll have once programmed and practiced with.
@@mohork What always gets me is the look on people's faces when a new technology suddenly opens doors that were tightly shut to them. Seeing it in their eyes that they now have these doors swung wide open before them, and the endless opportunities that await them, gets me every time.

@@zuzax1656 Well rather a combination of software and hardware
The arm didn't know how much pressure it did. The standard for those arms/hands is two sensors. One does all the opening and one the closing things. The sensors are located at the leftover of your arm, where the amputee has muscles to control the arm/hand. All is controlled by how long and hard you push the sensors and of course a clever software. It appears that she just pressed the sensor long enough to close the hand but not too long to crush the paper box. It's theoretically possible to do a p=u*i reading of the electric motors to recognize resistance. But then u have to implement that and that is very difficult since the hand doesn't know should it grab a paper box and not squeeze it or should it hold a water bottle that tight that the user can open it. It's much easier to just close your hand with the sensors and close it a little more to have a tighter grip on the water bottle. In general, there are some "standard" grips, like an open hand, closed hand, normal hand (where your fingers are in a neutral position like on a real hand), and a cup holder hand (where the little finger closes more, so that the cup is resting on your little finger when the grip is not tight enough).

My brother lost his arm too, there was one day he was doing the same thing you are doing and that brings me so much joy that you guys are still here in the moment not thinking about the past 💝 keep going

You should show us how to train it and stuff. This is the kind of tech that I just find fascinating.

It will most likely be basic associations of whatever part of the nervous/muscle system the socket can detect. If you watched her train it, it would probably be pretty boring for most, she would have to repeat movements until they are done how she wants them and then reinforce that they are always done how she wants. Probably over an hour or two. It would be cool to watch it though. It's incredible technology, I'm a CS student and use 3D printers a lot and this field is a great way to improve people's lives I've been wanting to break into.
There are several non-profit organizations dedicated to 3D printing prosthetics for children (since traditional prosthetics cost too much for kids as they grow out of them fast) that use mechanical-based grips, such as Team-Unlimbited and E-nabling the Future.
Its just got two functions both operated by the power button, grip and release.

I wanted to cry when you put it on. I’m an amputee too. I felt the same way when I got my myoelectric prosthesis. It was emotional. It’s been broken for almost 5 years and I’m in a constant state of frustration that wears on my psyche something terrible. Thanks for this video this might be an option for me......and go out and grab a bunch of stuff!!! Lol

This is exactly what science and technology _should_ be used for: Making life better for humanity as a whole, but for an individual's needs as well. I feel confident that it will be very challenging to train it, but something tells me that you're going to meet the challenge head-on. Congrats.
Well it may be controversal, but if we continue to make life better for Humanity and improve our health, we will die less but still grow in population and then hit the limit of the capacity the earth can take and sign the end of our species cause of a lack of ressource... Well i may have watched too much Thanos !
@@kimaki6866 That has a easy solution, legislate reproduction, castrate 99% of the population at birth and you will have 1% of the population in a few years.
@@diablo.the.cheater yeah but it's easy on the paper, i don't think the humanity will have the will to do this. With the people who wan't kids so badly, the religion and the public opinion on liberty right... It's not really a solution that can be made possible...

@@kimaki6866 Yeah that's how it goes. Humans are animals. Animals go extinct. The arrogance that we can somehow stop that from happening is very human though. We will have been wiped out by an asteroid impact long before overpopulation kills us. Or maybe a super volcano erpution. Maybe simply a change in the climate triggering an ice age. Any of these things mean our extinction.
That being said, what sense does it make to make life harder on ourselves for something that most likely won't even be an issue?
Accidentally ended up here. Glad I did. This one of the coolest things I’ve ever witnessed. The human body and brain, mechanical engineering & software, ingenuity and emotion, all merging to make something beautiful - a new part of you. I would say “have a great life”, but something tells me you already have! Thanks for sharing.

Yes, all cybernetic hands are programmed to incessantly crush boxes. Something is clearly wrong.

Props to the the company that builds these and I'm glad this girl got the chance to experience having one of these.
I read people who lost their arm still have memories of that hand in their brain. When you get a new arm your brain will instantly recognise that. This is why i think she felt that sensation. She is a pure soul. Bless her 👍
i've been really huge into prosthetics as a kid just because of a game series called "Deus Ex", it's crazy to see how far we've come with prosthetics in just 20 years.. I will officially be jealous of amputees that will be able to flip the bird while continuously rotating their wrists 360 degrees..
3D printing and neural interfaces is changing the future of prosthetics.. the reality of Cyberpunk 2077 will be far less strange once people will become more and more augmented

We are still a ways away from that. Around 2050 we will reach the singularity of computing and we will start to figure out everything that takes humans decades to figure out.
The Deus Ex people and a British prosthetics company, Open Bionics, work together to make so called Hero Arms for amputees. Daniel Melville and Tilly Lockey have them. Tilly also has another model of arm from Alita: Battle Angel with the help of James Cameron.
This isn't what I was looking for when I searched 3d printed arms but I'm fascinated none the less.
this came up in my recommended out of nowhere. I'm glad it did even if i cried when you started grabbing stuff; just your excitediness and the look in your eyes over the ability to use your right arm in a way the majority of us take for granted just tore me up. Please let us know how you are doing and how the prosthetic training is going.

I am so happy for you. My Dad is missing his left leg just above the knee. The complexity of the knee he wears is insane to me. I can only imagine the tech that goes into an arm. That was amazing to watch! I'm not going to lie this made a grown man cry tears of joy.
Now, This was just cool as hell! Wow, you got an arm! I'm a 70 year old disabled veteran. Almost lost my left arm 50 years ago. I know exactly how you must have felt this first time. I'm blown away by just how cool this is! I'm So happy and glad for you that I'm crying with the beauty of this moment. I look forwards to seeing more videos of your progress.

As a kid I grew up watching the bionic man, to see something like this is mind blowing.

My uncle (now deceased) had both his legs removed in his 20s. He would have been fascinated with this technology.

My cousin lost his left arm from the elbow down and has a prosthetic from the same company and he loves it. He can't say enough good about them.

This stuff is fascinating to me. I never imagined I would live to see this technology get so far that it would be capable of recognising your intentions just through those sensors but here we are.
It makes me appreciate the fact that I have everything intact and functioning.

I can not imagine what you must feel like but from the pure bliss you were showing i think it changed you life for the better. I am Happy for you to be able to have this increddible piece of engineering.
This is why I love 3d printing, it makes things like this more possible and easier to get ahold of. I can even see them releasing a core kit, and then people can 3d print their own shell for it easy enough so they can have fun colors or designs for them.

The 3d printing is the least impressive part here.
@@BillyBoze even if that where true, the shape of the arm would be easily replaceable with new parts. Not to mention depending upon material it could be incredibly durable. Such as 3d printed carbon printed material.
Man, that arm looks really cool. I'm constantly impressed on how far technology has come. Look at that thing, it's awesome!
IT´S NOT THE ACTION ITSELF THAT REALLY MATTERS, BUT THE ACTION OF THE ARM WITH SENSATION, AND BRAIN INFORMATION, AND MOVING AN ARM THAT WAS NEVER THERE. REALLY AMAZING VIDEO.

I believe that bad/difficult things happen to people in general partially because it helps us to understand and have joy and happiness. You can't really understand happiness and true joy if you haven't had trials or difficulties in your life. What's amazing in this video is that something has made your life difficult to the point that you were able to have this moment that you recorded on video that brought you such joy you were able to share some with those of us watching. Thank you so much for doing so. This is possibly the coolest youtube video I have ever watched.
During this pandemic I have been stressed, high anxiety and for the first time in 49 years I had multiple panic attacks. Watching this video was a good distraction me from life. I am so happy for you!!!

If I remember, there's a data interface of some sort, which also doubles as a pointy, stabby weapon. I guess it'll be USB-C, because 2021, but let's toss in Thunderbolt, because he's awesome? And a Boring Co. not-a-flamethrower, . And for fun, how about Tesla cold gas thrusters, so it can fly, like the old Giant Robo anime? (And, umm, I'll need one for testing...)

I have all my limbs, but i get SO excited to see whats new/more accessible for prosthetics. it makes me so happy that it appears to be getting easier to get movable hands; I personally don't know what id do if i couldn't use both of mine

I tell people all the time unless they have dentures they will never truly understand what it's like or what it feels like, just like with your arm, I can never understand what you are going thru. I can comprehend what it is and what it does but I could never truly understand what the emotions are and what you are truly experiencing. I am very happy for you and I can tell how you are reacting that you are emotionally overwhelmed and that is a good thing to see.

You have made my day!! Seeing how happy you are when you first put it on was really nice. Mindblowing how you can just get the thing out of the box, plug it onto your elbow and then just start grabbing stuff. Absolutely amazing!

I smile a real smile, I get tears in my eyes for their joy. I'm really happy for you and I hope all has been well in the past year with your new arm.
