  • Check out this brand-new footage from Apologia Church's evangelism and outreach at the Mormon temple in Mesa, Arizona. Pastor Jeff Durbin speaks to someone who claims to have left the Latter-day Saints' Church (but still believes in the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith). He argues that salvation is through faith and works.

@@YAHOOISNOTG That is not true. Jeff often uses this idea to misrepresent the churches position on Faith and works. but it is a misrepresentation plain and simple.
The LDS Church does not at all teach that we as sinners can work our way into Heaven, or that it is by any merit or deeds of our own that we gain more likelihood of being granted access into Heaven. The church affirms and reaffirms often that it is only through the power and grace of the atonement of Jesus Christ that we have any hope of entering Heaven.
In 2 Nephi 25:23 we read, “for we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do.” This passage has been twisted and manipulated and used as ammo against the truthfulness of the Church because at first glance it may seem to contradict the passage in Romans 3:28, which states, “we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law”, the scripture in Ephesians 2:8-9 reading, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. However, upon closer reflection it is made more apparent that there is in fact no contradiction. In comparing Nephi’s words to that of His brother Jacob who said something very similar to Nephi, we find a key element that is often overlooked when comparing Nephi’s words to those of Paul. Jacob says in 2 Nephi 10:24 that, “after ye are reconciled unto God, that it is only in and through the grace of God that ye are saved”. The two statements, “after all we can do”, and “after ye are reconciled unto God”, indicate that all we can do is be reconciled to God, which is a reference to repentance. So all we can do in order to receive that Grace of God is to repent and have that repentance accepted by God. This concept is reaffirmed in Alma 24:11 when king of the Anti-Nephi-Lehies proclaimed, “it was all we could do to repent sufficiently before God that he would take away our stain.”
Talking passed each other is a common thread i see through these conversations Jeff has with Mormons. and it is because they view doctrines and teachings on different levels of understanding. From an LDS perspective the Mainstream Christian level of understanding, of which Jeff would hold to is that from the Terrestrial perspective. it's limited and vague and doesn't ever seem to present any real detail of the how or why. the LDS level of understanding would be that from the Celestial perspective. it seeks to answer the questions and put all the pieces together about the details of how it all works and why the Lord would implement such an idea into His gospel.
knowing this we can better see that there are essentially two different levels of understanding about what constitutes being saved. To a Mormon, to be truly saved is more than just admittance into Heaven, but is to have eternal life or life in the presence of God, which can only take place in the Higher level (Sun, 1 Corinthians 15:40). This is a level that can only be attained through works on top of the grace of Christ's atonement, but to many mainstream Christians, to be saved merely means, to simply receive admittance into the kingdom of heaven, not differentiating between the different degrees or levels in any way. This level of understanding doesn't necessarily include inheriting eternal life, or exaltation, or God's presence, and all that the Father has, just entrance into Heaven. That doesn't mean the mainstream Christian is wrong, it just means that their analysis is shallow and vague, while the Mormons have analyzed it on a deeper, more comprehensive level and worked out the nitty gritty details of the plan, rather than just accepting the surface idea of 'salvation equaling Heaven' and then arguing that any concept more or less detailed than that must be wrong as many mainstream Christians often do.
Main stream Christians tend to lump salvation, and exaltation, and eternal life, and heaven, and God's presence, and inheriting all that the Father has into one definition, as if there is no differentiation or distinguishing details between any of them or distinguishing between the requirements to receive any of those extra things. So, while most mainstream Christians focus only on the boundary between Heaven and Outer Darkness (Hell), Mormons, who have broken down the different degrees and levels of Heaven into their different brackets according to the requirements of attaining to those different levels, are focused on all of the details of Heaven, for the purpose of working toward the highest degree of God’s kingdom possible, or a life like unto that of God’s.

He’s technically right saying we “show it by works” but then he seems to incorporate that into justification. We “show it” after we are saved, not in order to be saved.
We aren’t justified by works, we just have works afterwards, after we are justified, as an evidence of having already been granted repentance and been saved.

The gospel is the same as it was in the New Testament. There is nothing that you can do to earn your salvation. Jesus Christ paid the penalty for all your sins when he died on the cross. All you need to do is humble yourself, repent of your sin and put your faith in Jesus Christ.

Justin Burt I can sense your genuine care. I appreciate that. I am not sorry though, the new testament teachings of Jesus Christ refutes the necessity of a restoration of the gospel. The gospel is God's power to save which is accessed by faith in Christ alone. If you read the wheat and tares, you can see the kingdom Christ brought grew from its inception until the end of the world, even amongst the tares. Jesus taught the kingdom is like a mustard seed which started as a small seed and branched out to be the largest in the garden. He said the gates of hell would not prevail against it. There is no teaching of Jesus in proper context which shows his church would fall away and need to be restored. But I do appreciate your genuine regard for me. You are a good man brother

Matthew 23: v24 thru v26 ... Ye blind guides which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
Woe unto you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites !
For ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
Thou blind Pharisee cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter that the outside of them may be clean also.
Teaching one thing yet doing another thing in one's own life, that's bad leaven. Lord Jesus says beware leaven of the Pharisees in Matthew 16.
Luke 18: v9 thru v14 has Lord Jesus warning with a parable about a Pharisee which exhalted himself fasting from food twice per week. Lord Jesus says in Matthew 6: v31 not to worry about food, drink or clothing.
Fasting only twice per week compared to living on faith that Lord Jesus will give you food when He is ready. That is living on faith, a difference between holiness and righteousness.
Remember. Lord Jesus fasted forty-days in the wilderness after demonstrating how to be born again of water and Spirit. Moses fasted forty-days twice in Deuteronomy 9: v9 an v18 each time before going up to the Lord on Mt. Horeb. And Lord Jesus reminds His disciples that a certain demon cannot come out but by prayer and fasting in Matthew 17: v21.
No question, the importance of fasting.
Mark 12: v41 thru v44 ... Lord Jesus says giving all of one's money compared to being able to easily give ten-percent out of the abundance. That is a difference between holiness and righteousness.
Lord Jesus says be holy because He is holy in Leviticus 11: v45
Lord Jesus says to John the Baptist: Permitted at this time to fulfill all righteousness in Matthew 3: v15
Paul rebaptizes the twelve in Ephesus in Acts 19: v1 thru v7.
Why would Paul rebaptize those twelve in Ephesus who were already water baptized in John the Baptist's baptism ? ... why wouldn't Paul just lay hands on them so they would receive the Holy Spirit ?
      Answer:
John the Baptist's baptism can be considered simple righteousness in comparison to the holiness of being water baptized in the name of Jesus.
Be born again of water and Spirit:
Man of God. Not woman of God but a man of God who dunks you under water completely declaring exactly, "I baptize you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins."
Titles baptism: "I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit/Ghost for the remission of sins." Titles baptism is incomplete because it does not use the name of Jesus.
Titles baptism is a modern day equivalent to John the Baptist's baptism. John The Baptist did not baptize using the name of Jesus, so we look to Acts 19: v1 thru v7 to see Paul completing our understanding that water baptism must be performed using the name of Lord Jesus. All the Apostles went out and performed miracles and water-baptisms using the name of Jesus Christ as well.
The only way Matthew 28: v19 and Acts 19: v1 thru v7 and Acts 2: v38 can be reconciled is with the understanding Lord Jesus is Father Jesus. Lord Jesus is Father, Son, and Spirit. Lord Jesus has hundreds of titles, more titles than any other leader in history. Father, Son, and Spirit are just three of Jesus' titles.
Before you go to that man of God, ask him if he knows the difference between titles baptism and baptism in the name of Jesus. If he doesn't then find someone who does. Apostolic Pentecostals know what is proper water baptism in the name of Jesus Christ.
You don't have to consider yourself an Apostolic Pentacostal just because you were water baptized by an Apostolic Pentacostal minister. You are being born again into Lord Jesus and His church, and Apostolic Pentacostal ministers are the few men of God who understand the importance of using the name of Jesus.
Lord Jesus was, is and will always be a Jew Who said follow Him. Lord Jesus never talked about groups or denominations. And it was people in Antioch who first called Lord Jesus' followers Christians. So the first Christians were Jews.
And we gentiles who are born again of water and Spirit are grafted into the Jewish faith and can just as easily be broken off and cast into the fire if we don't produce good works. And if the only good work a person can do is pray ? ... then that is indeed a righteous work which is commanded by Lord Jesus.
So, after you are born again of water and Spirit, and you want to call yourself a Messianic-Jew, or an Apostolic Pentacostal, or a Christian ... so be it. I choose to call myself a born again believer in Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth Who is the one and only Lord God of Heaven. Remember, the oldest doctrine in the Holy Bible: God is one. Amen.
And either before [Acts 10: v44] or after [Acts 19: v6] your water baptism of repentance, you will receive a second and separate Spiritual baptism.
Once you have both water and Spiritual baptisms ... Congratulations, consider yourself born-again of water and Spirit.
But that is just a beginning, it's not a guaranteed ticket to heaven because a person can always walk away from their faith by their own free will. Or just as tragic, a person's free will can let them backslide into sin and lukewarm-ness.
To avoid those dangers believers must be in an ongoing relationship with Lord Jesus, meaning a cooperation. Among other things, believers must study and share His truth of the Holy Bible with others.
When we sin after being water baptized we are to have our feet washed as commanded and demonstrated by Lord Jesus at the Lord's Supper. As well. Fasting from food and other things along with prayer is a must. As singers would say, in harmony. Amen.
Don't tell people you're "saved." Instead tell people you began-to-be-saved, are being-saved, and will-be-saved as when Lord Jesus returns in glory or He calls one home before that incredible event.

So salvation is not something in us but outside of us. David produced wicked works, he was a murderer and fornicator, yet he was saved. Ananias and Sapphira produced bad works, yet they died as saved. The guy who fornicated with his stepmother in 1Cor5, he produced works such were unseen to the Gentiles, yet he was counted as part of the body of believers.

tim spangler, yes you are right, that is why I quoted Bible: "The work of God is this: to believe in the One He has sent." I rely on God's work not my own. I believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and I am totally satisfied what God has done. If you watch your works in order to find assurance, this is the goal you never meet. You never get to the point that you can say I am totally satisfied, my works meets the salvation I hold. So assurance and clear conscious come if you look what Christ has done for us on the cross, not our works. So Christ is my works. Abraham believed God and God counted him to be righteous. It was 25 years before Isaac. Abraham lived 25 years before he produced works. So I guess during before Isaac you can say that his faith was dead? God did not think so. Faith without works is dead faith in the eyes of men because God sees in the heart but men see only physical action/works. *No man could justify himself before God by his works* Job 25:4, Gal 3:11, Rom 3:20 etc.

Jim Caponzi what I'm saying is, catholics, Baptists, Anglicans, pentecostals are all part of the true church of Jesus christ, actually I would go so far as to say it comes down to the individuals not to the church they attend at all. In every denomination there are people who are true followers, and there are people who are not. If the Roman Catholic Church itself was the true church of Jesus Christ, there wouldn't be such rampant pedophilia. As well as baptisms for babies. Baptism is a choice we have to make as sinners moving on past sin by choosing life, which is God. A baby can't make that choice. Also first communion and confirmation, I went to catholic school and I wasn't allowed to take communion because I didn't do first communion through the Catholic church, even though I had been doing communion since I was a child. Jesus christ himself said if we aren't thinking of him while we are doing communion we are sinning against him. I'm not saying catholicism is evil, I'm saying Christians themselves, true Christians, are the TRUE church of Jesus christ. And they can come from any church, not Mormonism or Jehovah though.

The thief on the cross produced zero works, yet he is with our Lord Jesus Christ today.
    Let that sink in, legalists.
Happy Passover everyone. Christ is risen!!! Jesus is Lord.

zymbo With all due respect, the letter that Paul the Apostle wrote to Ephesians are to those who have obeyed the gospel of Jesus Christ and are saved, it is not addressed for those who are sinners or to the world.
You must look back at Acts 19 and see how the Church at Ephesians we’re established and were saved by grace through *faith,* by obeying the gospel of Jesus Christ. Because the bible says, "But wilt thou know, O vain man, that *faith without works is dead?"* - ‭‭James‬ ‭2:20‬‬
"And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to *Ephesus:* and finding certain disciples,...When they heard this, they were *baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus."* - ‭‭Acts‬ ‭19:-1-5‬‬
The New Testament began on the day of Pentecost (50 days after the resurrection of Jesus Christ) and Peter stood up and said, “Repent, and be baptized, every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost”. - Acts 2:38
"He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned." - ‭‭Mark‬ ‭16:16‬‬
This is how one is saved from their sins, by hearing the gospel and obeying. Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God, and obeying it (Romans 10:17).
The Thief on the cross died in the Old Testament, and he was saved of course. Because at that time, only the Jews were saved, for those who believed on their Messiah. "But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." - ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭10:6‬‬
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
      - ‭‭John‬ ‭3:16‬‬
When you stand before the Lord Jesus Christ on the day of Judgement and say to him, “But aren’t we saved by grace through faith and it is not of works?” He will say to you, “I gave you that faith, but you didn’t obey my gospel, so depart from me ye that work iniquity.”
May the Lord open your eyes to see the truth of his Words neighbour.

To much is given much is expected. The thief on the cross lacked something we don't... Time. Because we know more, we have more account and are expected to do more with what we know. We have more to believe on, so based on our faith we live accordingly, but salvation is the starting point for our race, your works don't save you before then but they get taken into account AFTER salvation, which are reflection of faith, run the race.

the works that you are speaking should be the ones of ordinances of salvation, like baptism and receiving the gift of the holy ghost under the hands of melquisedec priesthood that these young men have. when you say that only thru your faith, you on purpose are teaching or asking people to ignore that the ordinances of salvation where instituted by the lord himself. You also must be send with authority to preach and not take it upon yourself to do it. and if you did not receive authority from one holding it, why are you sending yourself.

I'm an ex Christian, now an unbeliever, but what did me in, among other things, is realization that God changes his mind according to the Bible. And his promises could have a hidden condition, sometimes not so hidden.
For instance, what was the prophet Jonah supposed to preach to Nineveh? that in 40 days they will be destroyed. But prophet Jonah, as the story goes, did not want to preach that because he realized Nineveh won't be destroyed IF they repented. Ultimately, he was right. So, what ended up happening is the opposite of what he was told to preach to them.
Look at a similar thing in Ezekiel 33:13 When I say to the righteous he will **surely live**, and he so trusts in his righteousness that he commits iniquity, none of his righteous deeds will be remembered; but in that same iniquity of his which he has committed **he will die.**
Your comment is akin to this righteous man running around and telling others that he has a word from the Lord himself that he will SURELY live. He can look up and debate the meaning of the words surely and live until he is blue in the face, but the problem is there is a condition that he must follow or will NOT surely live.

Jeff is arguing works of the law. Abraham was not justified by works of law, but by faith in God. But his faith was proven by works. There is no arguing that reality. Sometimes I think we get settled on trying to disprove a certain theology that it is easy to miss even what Jesus is saying.
Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. - Matthew 16:24
I am hearing works right there. Three things that we are asked to do in order to come after Jesus.
Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel." - Mark 1:14-15
Two more thing that Jesus requires of us. Jesus clearly called people to do things, and this was before He shed His blood for sins. He called people to believe, but he also called them to do.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. - Matthew 5:16
James 2:17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
Jas 2:20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?
Jas 2:21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar?
Jas 2:22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect?
Jas 2:23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS ACCOUNTED TO HIM FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS." And he was called the friend of God.
Jas 2:24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.
    oops
The hang up here is that works of law does not produce justification. Which is what Paul said. Works of law. A work of obedience to Christ Jesus well that is a work of the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus, Romans 8. Revelation 2 and 3 shows us that obedience to Christ is important. He pronounced judgment on these Christians if they did not repent. Obedience is better than sacrifice.
    Peace!

What do christians (or at least those similar to the ones in this video) believe allows someone into heaven? As someone who has just left the mormon church (part of the reason I've come upon this video) I think the "faith without works is dead" is a pretty much a no brainer still. I believe that people should still be judged by their actions, as well as their faith. Do they believe so long as you have faith you can act as you will, but because you have faith you deserve heaven? I'm not trying to slander I just want a straightforward answer so I know.

Hello friend. Thank you for asking this.
      Ephesians 2:8‭-‬9 ESV says
"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."
      Romans 3:23-25a says
"...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith..."
      Romans 3:28
"For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law."
      Romans 10:8‭-‬11 says the following
But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.”
Also, here is another similar video. I think it discusses the "faith without works is dead" topic.

Spend some time reading the book of Galatians. We trust in Jesus and his work on the cross to pay our sin debt. Someone who places his or her faith in Christ receives the Holy Spirit. The Lord then begins changing your desires to want to obey. If someone doesn't seek to obey, he or she should examine their faith. True faith, produces good works.

    • @1977Jackofalltrades
      @1977Jackofalltrades Před 2 lety

Hey Adam, good question and congratulations on stepping away from LDS theology. Works absolutely matter as they bear witness to the gift we have received. They are the fruit of regeneration, but not the cause of it. We, as sinful humans who are born into sin and at enmity with God will never “deserve” Heaven. To deserve something is to merit it, to earn it. The only way we could do that is to live a life of perfect obedience, which we have not and can not do. Christ did that for us, and through His obedience and His sacrifice we can be reconciled to God. A genuine saving faith is accompanied by good works, and we are still held accountable for our actions. But it is Christ’s righteousness that is imputed to us and our sin that is imputed to Him, that satisfies the righteous wrath of God. He is the propitiation for our sins. We are saved by works, but it’s the work of Christ, not us, that saved us. You can’t earn a gift, but you can show gratitude afterwards.

A changed life can be and should be a RESULT of salvation, but it is not the proof of salvation. Example, a saved person can get into a car accident, and get prescribed pain meds. This saved person could end up addicted to these pain meds and get to a point where they aren't serving the Lord because they are constantly withdrawing from opiates and wanting to feel better. They desire to serve the Lord like they use to but fell into a big struggle and picked up other worldly behaviors . Other Christians see this person and and have no idea that this person is a christian outwardly. We all fall short in our behavior in some way, so to say that an outward changed life is the proof of salvation is silly.
If you ask me for proof of my salvation, I'll explain to you the gospel msg that saved me. Period. Proof is in what you believe, who your trusting in. You ,or Him alone?

If a person gets saved and for whatever reason doesn't do good works, they will reap the consequences, and correction, but in no way does that mean they aren't saved. Salvation is by God's grace in the first place. Grace is a gift, grace is unmerited favor. Ephesians 2:8-9. We should walk in the works we were appointed to walk in but we fail a lot. My favorite part was 11:10 when the brother was nailing Paul's "justified by faith" Abraham before the law and the choir in the background was in its climax
