  • Jordyn Wieber, Olympic Gold Medalist, looks at the moments of devastation that at times are part of the fabric of life, and how to turn these into transcendent moments of inspiration. Jordyn Wieber is an Olympic gold medalist and American gymnast from DeWitt, Michigan. This teenage gymnastics phenom caught the world’s attention by becoming the World Champion in 2011. A key member of the “Fierce Five”, Jordyn helped the U.S. Olympic Women’s Gymnastics Team capture the team gold medal at the London Olympic Games in 2012.
    In 2017, Jordyn graduated from UCLA with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and currently serves as an Assistant Coach for the UCLA Gymnastics Team. As a former Olympic gold medalist, Jordyn has expansive knowledge of how to succeed in gymnastics, but her influence extends beyond the confines of her winning combination of physical prowess and determination. Jordyn is still one of the top influencers in gymnastics and also serves as a motivational speaker and vocal advocate for preventing child sexual abuse in sports. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

      Yeah I think she was mislead about her chances in the all around. Her coach told her to assume she’d qualify. But her peers were gaining ground. It set up the heartbreak when she did not qualify. But then she learned a lot from not qualifying so I guess it turned out all right in the end.

    What she did not say is that she actually finished 4th in the All Around qualifications at the Olympics and SHOULD have been included in the final had there not been the "two per country" rule, and two Americans (Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman) had finished ahead. That would have been even more of a reason to be frustrated but she was the ultimate class act and helped her team win gold. And then she could not compete in college because she had turned pro so she became a team manager and moved mats and did laundry for the UCLA team, where she became a great leader and ultimately a coach. She is a true inspiration in the way she lives her life, and the classiest person ever. THANK YOU JORDYN for this talk !

    • @lizardbeth68
      @lizardbeth68 Před 4 lety +5

      No, she SHOULD NOT have been included in the final because that’s not how it works. They went to two per country to make the finals more inclusive. That’s the rules.

    • @edgartheboston1818
      @edgartheboston1818 Před 4 lety +15

      Lizzie Brooks Are we going to get back to that again? One last time, the US pushed for this rule when the Romanians were winning everything... you cannot modify the rule every time it doesn’t suit you. Rules need consistency for all. Thank you.

    • @m.lizziebrooks8889
      @m.lizziebrooks8889 Před 4 lety +11

      Edgar The Boston, I'm not American. My point was that her performance during qualifications was not a terrible one since she finished 4th overall. Not being qualified when you're 4th must be even more frustrating. Yet she was resilient about it. Period. Is the rule fair or not, that's an other debate.

    • @emmyjo720
      @emmyjo720 Před 4 lety +2

      She also had bad injuries which is why she stopped and became a coach. Russia and GB also had three gymnasts in the top 24.

    • @mlorocker
      @mlorocker Před 4 lety +2

      Lizzie Brooks your point is moot because Jordan knew the rules going in. She should have outperformed her American peers if she “deserved” a spot in the final. If qualifications were the finals, she still wouldn’t have medaled in fourth place. She’s a great gymnast but it just wasn’t her event. She had another chance in fx event finals but didn’t medal either. Injury mixed with nerves probably cost her in both, but she’s still a great champ.

    A very inspiring video. As the saying goes, it’s not about waiting for the storm to pass, but learning to dance in the rain. I spent some 40 years waiting for the storm to pass, (abusive childhood) before I finally accepted that it never would, but that I could still have a great life regardless. I’m now 50, and looking forward to at least another 50 years, but this time I’ll be dancing in the rain! ❤️

    Wow. I didn’t know how much I needed this. 😔 Two months ago my partner of two years left me for someone else. It was the beginning of my first semester as a senior in college. I currently have a 4.0 but I am afraid that it will not be the same after this term. The situation has made me slip into depression. I’m unable to focus on my studies as much as I used to. At times, I have completely no interest in studying at all. This caused my grades to plummet which just made me feel even worse. Now I am getting so mad. I wanna be able to control my life again. This video just inspired me to do just that. Wish me luck. ❤️

    I really feel that Americans have some kind of syndrome where any obstacle that one overcomes, becomes an opportunity for book publishing, TED talk or Oprah book tour. Meanwhile most of the world looks at silly Americans and laughs thinking, you guys. We all have been trough a lot of things, its not a contest of who had it worse, its just life. Not mandatory book or speech we need to deliver. Just life. In America its mandatory "inspirational" talk. I find that particular part of American culture disingenuous. Especially in the way it is delivered in this speech. It feels so fake. With rehearsed pauses and everything. You know what is perhaps more inspirational. People who don't talk about their story, but use the lessons of what they have been trough for something else other than self promotion.
