      I think The Witcher III is easily the best Action-Adventure game, but as of RPGs go I have to say there are better stories and better branching storylines. (The Witcher 2 and 1 for example)
      Still an amazing game, topped of with great gameplay, beutiful graphics and some astounding sound design.

    This might be common knowledge, but I just realised: when you go to the Hanged Man's Tree in Velen to meet Roche, there's an 'Unfinished Book' you can loot next to the fire. If you read the entries, it implies that it's written by the Oxenfurt scholar who teaches Geralt Gwent in White Orchard. He really should have stayed away from the war after all.

    • @xLetalis

      Yeah I should mention it at some point ;]

    • @TitoMcFadden
      @TitoMcFadden Před 3 lety +179

      To expand upon this, if you look at the body that's hanging above the book (presumably the author), he is barefoot. If you chose to have Geralt warn him not to go to Velen to write about the war, Geralt says "They'll kill you." Then the author asks why would they kill a scholar. Geralt replies "Boots. They'll kill you for your boots." Unfortunately, Geralt was right.

    Another detail related to Wild at Heart, is the fate of Niellen and Hanna's son. If you travel West from the village to the coast there are some boats on a beach. Amongst them is the body of a child and a note from Hanna to someone explaining they're sending their son to someone else because they can't look after him for reasons "you wouldn't believe if I told you". Obviously he only made it as far as the boats before being attacked by drowners.
    I remember reading the note to the bottom, realising that it was the same person as the quest, and it just hitting me how sad that whole story was but also how much incredible depth there was in the game.

    I believe that Ronvid of Small Marsh is a callback to a character "Zbyszko z Bogdańca" from a book "Krzyżacy" by Henryk Sienkiewicz. It's a set book in Polish schools so pretty much everyone here knows it. The character used to challenge some random people to a duel if someone dares to say that his lady of heart isn't the prettiest woman in the world and also swore to kill 100 enemy knights in her name if i remember correctly, so Ronvids 100 duels would be a blend of those two things

    I'm so happy I found number 5 on my own. I kept thinking of that quest and the little girl. Thought I would take a ride to the village and see if the NPC was still around and alive, found her and got the painting. I was smiling ear to ear! Such a lovely addition, and no quest to lead you to it. Just something meant to be found randomly, by players who are immersed and roam the open World. This is the reason why Witcher 3 is one of the best games ever. Other games might have had a quest saying "Check on the girl after 1 week", but not here. This is pure flavour and something made for the dedicated and immersed players to find. Great list!

Couldn't wait till I got into Novigrad but now in my 5ft playtrough after reaching Novigrad I just wanted to do more Velen quests. One thing that pissed me off though is that I did the Bloody Baron quest in a different way, I did the Lubberkin quest and met identified Anna in the swamp before informing the Baron and thus when I went to inform him he ordered me to go see Tamara and then ordered me to the rescue mission in the swamp so I never got to meet Tamara and the quest wasn't fully completed. Damn I was exploring all of the Velen's questionmarks before completing Baron's quest. I've found this tree and I had to idea either to kill or free it (had no information because hadn't completed any related quest). So after like 15 mins of wondering i decided to kill it for local folk's safety (because I found several courpses around the tree). Later I got secret ending. And from my prospect of "first time playing" it is the most dull. Crones just disappeared after first (and short!) dialog, Baron seems retired... Wish I hadn't wasted my 30 hours riding across map

    You need to free the spirit before starting the quest: Ladies of the Wood (so, essentially, before you walk down the trail of treats).
    Spoilers follow below:
    The results of doing this quest in this order are:
    - The Baron and Anna are "safe", he takes her away to the Blue Mountains, to visit the Hermit-healer, thus avoiding her death and subsequently his suicide.
    - The children disappear, and are mentioned to be gone several times, though no mention of where they have gone is made. It is implied by the Crones that they are dead. Read more below.
    - The Crones will consider you a traitor. Gameplay-wise this changes nothing.
    - The Spirit kills everyone in Downwarren, except for the Ealdorman, as revenge for them having cut down the trees of the forest and for serving the Crones (I assume).
    Tamara's fate is always the same. No matter what choices you make.
    I'm pretty sure this quest is an alternative to the Ladies of the Wood quest, where you retrieve Johnny's voice from the Harpies' nest. In fact, one of the ingredients required for freeing the Spirit in the Ancient Oak is a Raven's Feather - retrieved from the very same nest where the bottle in which Johnny's voice is trapped, is hidden. You still have to give Johnny his voice, but you skip the part where you play hide and seek with the children of the bog.
    Note: The Journal entry will claim that the Spirit saved the children from the Crones, without you even having told it about them. How Dandelion knew of this as he wrote the Journal is unknown (as it is never mentioned or depicted in a cutscene or witnessed by any characters), but it does not necessarily make the entry incorrect. The book 'She Who Knows' tells the spirit's story. A copy can be found in the Sewers through which you helped Triss and the mages escape during the quest 'Now or Never'.
    The spirit is never described as a force for good nor a force for evil, but one of nature that went mad. This may, however, very well be Crone 'propaganda'. It is possible it saved the children, though it is also possible it kidnapped them and... well, you know.
    Personally, I hope it rescued them, as this would offer the best of all possible outcomes to one of the otherwise bleakest quest-chains in the world of gaming.

      I was thinking the same thing at first however, when you free the spirit, if you go in the village later, you see that something happened and the elderman (the guy who give you his ear) explain that a black horse came and spreaded madness in the village,making family members killing each other, even describing mothers who were holding their baby that started smashing them at trees. I just came to the conclusion that there is no good choice in this quest. Btw, the spirit do save the kids like she promised you can find that out in the school in Novigrad, there is a note with a liat of new students and the names match.

    • @CyrusLeGrandProd
      @CyrusLeGrandProd Před rokem +2

      the spirit = crones mother and she is even more evil than the crones themselves because she lost her mind... tbh i find the option of killing it to be the better one, since i don't think it's a good idea to sacrifice a whole village for 5 children... :/
      There is another detail that proves even further my way of thinking : the game gives you more than once a chance to change your mind about freeing the spirit or not, especially when Geralt look at the "mother" remainings and notices that these aren't human ones, this absolutely means that she was just like her "daughters", the difference is here is that crones give the region some kind of protection at least as opposed to the mother who made Velen become a way more horrible place to live in than it is.

    • @admiraltbags
      @admiraltbags Před 8 měsíci

      @@CyrusLeGrandProd The village is evil and everyone in it deserve to die. They provide the children to the crones in exchange for their "protection". There is a book, can''t remember the name of it contains details regarding the crones and their mother. If I remember correctly the mother is like the crones except her power grew too strong and began mass murdering and/or otherwise doing the same horrible stuff as the crones but in excess. This wasn't good for anyone, including the crones, so they trapped her in the tree.
      We actually have no facts that the spirit in the tree is evil, only these books. The spirit itself tells a different story that it once protected these lands and the crones wanted Valen for themselves so they killed her and trapped her spirit in the tree. We know from books that the bog used to be a beautiful forest but look at it now, with the crones living there for hundreds of more years it is a a swamp full of sickness.
      Lastly, if you free the spirit at the correct point between quests it does in fact free the children which can be confirmed at the school in Novigrad where a letter can be found with all the orphans names mentioning they the orphans were found on the doorstep and have been enrolled in the school.
      So the take away is, who do you believe? The crones and the books version of events or the actual facts and actions of both the crones and the spirit?
      It's my belief that the books are a sort of propaganda to ward people off from medaling with the spirit and the tree spirit is the better choice since she kept her promise and saved the orphans plus her version of history makes more sense. The crones corrupted the swamp after killing her so they could feed on the people which they continue to do.

    • @admiraltbags
      @admiraltbags Před 8 měsíci

      Also, the animals of the swamp protect the tree spirit as she once protected them. I don't know, It's very clear to me freeing the spirit is the best option since all the facts contradict the "she's more evil" argument. I think she's the exact opposite and is in fact chaotic good.

    First of all, sorry about my English if I commit any mistake.
    I always enjoy your videos about The Witcher; in fact, when I started to watch them some months ago, they take me to investigate a lot of things in this game on my own. I usually read Reddit and CDPR Forums as well, and consult Wikia "trivia" information too (even to see things that I know or think that are wrong). Thanks to this, I have some hypothesis about "mysteries" or curious issues like the quest 'From a Land Far, Far Away' or the mentioned here Ronvid. And I want to share some information about this character.
    Well, I remember to read in some site something about Ronvid being a prince or nobleman from Toussaint who travels North impulsed by his madness only to fight opponents for the glory of his beloved Maid Bilberry (probably invented). In this case, it's impossible for him to be the father of the girl Bilberry of Crow's Perch. The person who wrote this, also said something about finding this information in a note in Blood and Wine. I don't know if this is true at all (I've never find something like that), but I'm from Spain, and the interpretation of Ronvid being a "Quixotesque" character is absolutely certain. Even if you talks about this interpretation on the present video, it fits better with the hypothesis of the knight being a Toussaintoine crazy noble, and not a poor Nordling peasant. We must remember that we start our adventure in B&W at Dulcinea Windmill fighting a giant (Dulcinea is the invented beloved of Don Quixote, for those who don't know).
    But I want to go a bit further. As well as I play the Spanish version of the game, my ingame texts are fully translated (based on the books translations, directly from the Polish -like maintaining the original name of Jaskier, your Dandelion- ), and not only the subtitles of the conversations. So in Spain, Ronvid de la Marisma (literally "Ronvid of the Marsh") also talks about Doncella Bilberry ("Maid Bilberry"), but the note on Crow's Perch notice board points this:
    "Nuestra Mirtila ha muerto
    . Mi hija Mirtila, la niña de mis ojos, murió este año con solo cuatro primaveras. La enterramos en el cementerio, junto al abedul torcido. El que quiera echarle un poco de tierra o encenderle una vela, allí la encontrará. - Butkins".
    Translated literally is: "Our Mirtila is dead. My daughter Mirtila, the girl of my eyes, died this year with only four springs (in English you say summers, I think). We buried her in the graveyard, beside the crooked birch. Whoever wants to place a lump of earth or light a candle for her, there you will find her. - Butkins". You can see that, in the Spanish version, the name is changed, but Mirtila is some sort of feminine of 'mirtilo' or 'arándano' (bilberry or blueberry), or the name Myrtilus. I don't know why the translators changed this, but it seems an act to prove that they are not the same girl and Ronvid and Butkins are not the same man, but trying to maintain some similarity with the original name of both girls. Also is worth mentioning that I play the 1.60 version of the game from the start, so I don't know if the change was always there or is something of the patch. Maybe in another languages is changed too, in the last patch.
    Another thing... I always think about the name Butkins too. If both men are the same person, why Butkins changed his name into Ronvid? It's true that Alonso Quijano change his name into Don Quijote/Quixote from his surname Quijano, but I see no relation between Ronvid and Butkins. The only thing I can think about the change is because Butkins sounds a bit bad, like when James Gatz changed his name into Jay Gatsby because being "Gods by" is better than being "Guts". But in that case, both names are also similar.
    However, there's a point in favour of Ronvid being, at least, a Nordling: the knightly surname "of the Small Marsh" sounds a lot like a name from Velen, because all the swamps this region has.
    Sorry for the long comment, but I really want to point these little things. Greetings and good luck on The Path!

    Erwin Schrodinger was trying to explain the quantum uncertainty principle. A cat in a box with a vial of poison set to release at a random interval. Until you look in the box (observe the particle), you can assume that the cat is both alive and dead simultaneously. Particles of a quantum nature behave this way. Until they are observed, they seem to exist in 2 states at once. That's the basics of it.
    Big fan of your videos, Letalis. thanks

  • @dmc8706
    @dmc8706 Před 5 lety +156

    Schrodinger's cat is an illustration that has been misrepresented several times. When I looked into it I found out it's actually a little complicated. This is how it works.
    It illustrates a new system of math that was designed to represent a bizarre problem that physicist found. There was a test that was run to figure out whether certain subatomic materials are particles or waves. Waves and particles are two completely different things and something cannot be both a wave and a particle. When the test was run sometimes it produced the results that the protons are subatomic particles. Other times the test demonstrated that they are waves. What is most bizarre is the determining variable that changed the result. After running the test of multitude of times and changing specific variables to see what was causing the test to produce different results, the scientist concluded that the variable that made the difference was whether or not the test was being observed at the time it was run. If they were observing it when it happened it produced one result, if they were not observing it when it happened it produced another result. That sounds nonsensical, not only to us but to the scientists themselves. This test has been run a multitude of times and consistently returns with the same result. No one understands it oh, it doesn't make any sense to anyone. One of the theories that's designed to try and explain this is string theory but there are other theories to try and explain it as well. They're all pretty bizarre and out there.
    So what does this have to do with Schrodinger's cat? Well our understanding of subatomic particles or waves had been expanded. So naturally we needed a new form of math to explain it. the new math was designed to explain where the subatomic materials would be if they were waves and where they would be if they were particles. You'll recall that they cannot be both waves and particles. So in a sense this produces a nonsensical result. Schrodinger use the illustration of Schrodinger's cat to demonstrate that this new math Was giving a limited and bizarre picture of what is actually happening at a subatomic level. In the old stration of Schrodinger's cat Schrodinger has a cat in a box that has a poison dos on a timer where it will eventually kill the cat if the box is not opened. However if you open the box the poison will instantly spread and kill the cat which means that by observing the cat you change the result of the experiment and make it definitely dead. in order to move forward you have to describe the state of something which changes if You observe it. if you were to do this using the new system a mess that have been designed you would not open the box and you would say that the cat that was in the box was both alive and dead at the same time. This is exactly what it is like to describe subatomic materials as those being particles and waves at the same time. It isn't true it can't be true but it's the closest to the truth that we can get with an equation. that's the whole point of the illustration

      @ramjb Před 5 lety +33

      @@pododododoehoh3550 Yes and no. The theory (an analogy of real life subatomic quantum physics, and directly relatable with the Heisenberg's exclusion principle) is based on the fact that as long as you don't confirm the status of the cat (thus immediately killing it), the cat is both alive and dead simultaneously and both statuses will be relevant- the creature inside will behave both as dead and alive simultaneously.
      Which is completely nonsensical from the point of view of our day to day life, but is a behavior of subatomic physics which has been confirmed for almost a century now, and is the basis of most of the quantum physics fundaments.
      A less complicated answer would be: since the second the box is closed with the cat inside and the poison system activated, the cat is both alive and dead. Until you open the box - then it'll die and stop behaving as dead and alive simultaneously. But until you open the box and check for it's status, the cat is BOTH alive and dead. Simultaneously.
      The analogy is clear: there are certain particles that in the early 1900s were theorized to be waves, and were theorized to be particles. A good example would be photons (light). Some physicists stated that light was a wave, some stated that it was particles. Experiments backed both sides' opinions, so there was a lot of confusion and some bitter differences about the topic...because if experimentally your theory is sound then it should be valid. But turned out that BOTH theories were turning out to be experimentally correct.
      The big surprise and what turned subatomic physics upside down in the blink of the eye was the realization that light is both: wave and particle at the same time, and behaves like both...until you check on what it is. Then it'll behave like a particle only, if you test it as a particle, and behave as a wave only, if you test it as a wave.
      Which sounds like nonsense - just like the cat experiment- but is exactly what it is.

    I played through the first 30 hours or so, twice, and both times I visited the spirit in the tree before the crones. I didn't make the connection of it being the crones' mother until I saw this video just now. I also saved it and played through freeing the spirit, and killing it. However, I kept going after killing it, and never saw the other way, which would have led to Anna's change and the Baron hanging himself. Damn, this game's massive.

    Just started a new playthrough of The Witcher 3. Here's a couple things I'd missed in Velen on the previous four playthroughs:
    When you first arrive at Velen, if you dismount and look around the base of the tree (where all those bodies are hanging from) with your Witcher senses, there is an "Unfinished history book" describing the current war, before ending abruptly. I think the implication is that it's the history professor you met at White Orchard who has ignored your advice and ended up hanged from the tree.
    Also there's a basement / wine cellar in the Bloody Baron's castle I'd never noticed before, and the dialogue of two of the guards down there ("Bring out the gimp", "But the gimp is sleeping", "Well, I guess you're gonna have to wake him up now, won't you?") is from the movie Pulp Fiction.

Then with geralt you can follow the path which ciri goes to fight the crones and there's a chest with an vran sword and if you keep exploring it takes you back out were you can continue the game. I dont know if its a secret but i havent seen nobody else do it.

    I found something new these days when replaying the witcher 3, might say that's what makes this game great.
    See, in the quest "The Fall of the House of Reardon", there's an extra detail i found, i don't know if it was mentioned yet, but, you can find a hidden entrance in the back of the barn of the mansion, there you can go below in a place like an wine deposit or something, and there's a wall that can be demolished with Aard, there you find the dead brother of Dolores, who has been killed by her husband some time ago, that explains the wraiths there, and to me, it's a reference to some tales from Edgar Allan Poe, like "The Fall of the House of Reardon" it's a reference to "The Fall of the House of Usher", and how they were twins as the tale too, and the death of the brother it's a reference to other tale from Edgar, called "The Cask of Amontillado", were the guy dies trapped behind a wall too.
    This gives a tiny extra dialogue with Dolores, but that's all, God, how this game amuses me everytime a play it again.
    Cheers.

    Hi! Sorry to tell you this at this long, I'm a new sub and trying to see the whole series of the details you made. The thing is that in detail number 1, when you mentioned the hunter Neilen and the his death wife's sister, you can choose to accept the sister's offer to get the first reward and go to complete the quest without going to tell the hunter his wife is dead, and in the dialogue that you have in the cave, the sister says something like "What are you doing!?" and Geralt answer "I've changed my mind" and then you can choose between killing the werewolf there or let him kill the sister to then kill him anyway. It's interesting becouse doing the quest that way you can get a double reward. Greetings from Argentina.

    I should add to point #3: If you find the Hillock beforehand and even TALK to the tree (and come back later), you get the same ending if you save the children. The reason for this is because if you go there first by accident, a Side Quest is added to your log, whereas if you do it part of the main storyline, it registers as a main story quest.
    It's an interesting interaction with quests and one I actually got both times I did my playthroughs. I almost always try to explore literally everything before I move on to a new area.
