Lupe Pure Cordless Vacuum Cleaner Review - How does it compare with a modern Dyson cordless?

  • Review of the Lupe Pure Cordless vacuum cleaner. This was not gifted for free by the company for a favourable review. Erratum: @ 11:31 It is possible to remove the shroud without tools (not clear enough in the manual). This is still a step backwards, as the best designs self-clean. Secondly, it's also possible to turn off the brush bar on hard floors, thereby reducing the incredible noise it creates (although some suggest particles fall out after turning off if you do this).

    When you look at this product objectively, see its weaknesses and compromises, and then compare that to some of the reviews on other channels, you can see how it's possible to be misled. Rarely do you get an overarching assessment. Almost all of the performance testing seen in other reviews is unrepresentative of what you'd experience. Some tests use overly high concentrations of dirt on hard floors that you'd never encounter, or sucking up gigantic, oversized particles of cereal etc that vacuum cleaners aren't designed for, or artificially inject sand into a carpet, which is not the same as household fine dust that causes allergies. Then they draw conclusions that don't apply to normal, everyday, realistic use. This is misleading, so look out for it.
    Other things I don't like to see is 'first look videos' where they 'advertise' the product they clearly got for free, but then say nothing relevant about it, promise more in the future, but deliver nothing. That is a form of deceit because it promotes unduly. I've always felt it's best to do a proper job, be honest, or don't do it at all. Being gifted free products is also dodgy because people only give a half-truth and you only get the positive spin, whilst the warts are swept under the rug. It's never good to be bought out like that.
    One thing I didn't mention in this video is the small print on Lupe's website. To return it, you have to send it back yourself, making sure it's insured for the full value (which is expensive). After they've assessed it for damage, they may then issue you your refund. Stories in comments below about people losing out on hundreds of pounds when their machine 'didn't arrive back' etc. Better companies out there make the returns process much easier and less risky. I like the idea of a startup coming to market, but this is not very customer friendly, and the product itself does not seem to match the bold claims they make, which I find very repulsive and misleading. If this product had really shone, I would have been all over it and duly glorified it. Unfortunately, it did not perform anything like the V11 benchmark and was objectively less convenient to use. It lacks the technology and design.

      What's truly concerning is why you have nothing nice to say about the Lupe. You're bashing it from your first comments in the video. You appear to be very Dyson bias especially when you say to not be fooled by marketing. I suspect you're aware Dyson is all marketing.

      >>”What's truly concerning is why you have nothing nice to say about the Lupe.”
      You might want to watch the video; this is a false statement seemingly rooted in ignorance. The positives are discussed (such as its excellent hard floor cleaning of fine dust). This is a relative review as well, and the relative positives are few and far between.
      >>“You're bashing it from your first comments in the video.”
      No, once again that’s false. The start of the video simply outlines the lofty claims they make and then attempts to find evidence to support them, which speaks for itself. Interesting that you interpreted it as a ‘bash’ though, which is revealing.
      >> “You appear to be very Dyson bias”
      You haven’t really supported this wild accusation. If you’re suggesting that simply stating facts which clearly show the Dyson product that’s being compared against to be superior to the other product is bias, then that’s faulty logic.
      >> “suspect you're aware Dyson is all marketing”
      Well, again you didn’t seem to provide any evidence for this wild claim. And it’s not surprising, because the evidence that is available (in the video you seemingly didn’t watch), it clearly shows the claims made by Dyson about its cleaning performance are true, and the claims made about the Lupe are false. So, Dyson is not all marketing; unlike the Lupe.
      And now for the stuff you deleted for some unknown reason:
      >> “I own a Lupe and the many design problems you point out are fabricated and embellished in an attempt to promote your channel and Dyson vacs.”
      Well, you didn’t actually explain anything there to defend your position. I think my criticisms were well-evidenced in the video and people can make their own minds up.
      >> “if you took time to discuss Dyson's problems along side the product you're bashing, maybe you'd be slightly believable.”
      Er, this isn’t a Dyson V11 review; I'm comparing the Lupe to the V11 (regarded as currently the best on the market). Criticisms of the V11 were made in its review, few as they were. You really should do a bit more learning before making accusations that are false, because it doesn’t make you look respectable.

      @@VacuumFacts Bought the Lupe. Very disappointing even on hard floor (tile and wood) unless on high power. I also found it pushed a lot of debris to the wall and didnt pick it up. I don't have carpets. Also head is 7.5cm high so too tall to get under a lot of furniture. Honestly underwhelmed. Low power is anaemic and unusable. mid is barely ok but makes quick tasks take longer. I feel duped. Crevice tool needs to have brush removed to work and is too short.

      Wouldn't trust subjective reviews from any website; a lot of people criticising in the same sounding way doesn't mean they're right. Nevertheless, as mentioned in another reply, 'useful suction' is a poorly defined parameter that's not representative of anything meaningful. It was later popularised by Vacuum Wars, which I find a very lousy channel because of poorly thought out, unrepresentative testing taht offers no actually reliable objective comparative data, no matter how well the content is dressed up. The ONLY parameter worth a damn is the very parameter these channels and other manufacturers never show you (for good reason)-namely the ACTUAL cleaning performance measured according to universally accepted formal, industry standard testing (with independent verification). Such tests are independently confirmed to show the Dyson products perform the best, whether people like it or not. And it's hardly a surprise, because Dyson actually design specifically to be the best and test to check. It's also why they can charge the earth for their products. Then there is usability and environmental impact to consider with a product (which includes running costs). My reviews cover the details. czcams.com/play/PLBxUOcW7kaEtK3qcKCMEaLKTrP8Ehu8sz.html

    This is really helpful and covers a lot of things I'd been wondering about the Lupe but other reviews I've seen have ignored. For instance, I had a suspicion this vacuum was loud and unpleasant sounding from how it sounded in other reviews but no one seemed to mention it. Also, a lot of reviewers seem to be excited to see a design that moves away from the stick configuration, but don't go into details about the downsides like not being able to maneuver under smaller spaces. Also, the Lupe's bin emptying situation--no thank you. Lupe seems to me like just another direct-to-consumer company that is in tune with what it thinks a niche of consumers value (in this case built to last instead of planned obsolescence). Yes, this marketing appeals to me, but I'm glad I found your review before giving them my money!

    • @VacuumFacts
      @VacuumFacts  Před 3 lety

      Hi, how did you find my review out of interest? I'd love to know.
      Most people that do YT 'reviews' are bought-out and gifted what they're reviewing as a freebie for favourable promotion, incentivised further by the YT advertising money, and aren't particularly good or care about things from the viewers' point of view. Most aren't even aware of things about the product they're reviewing to even know to talk about it, or are just completely oblivious to the obvious, like your noise example. Or they're just corrupt and keep the warts covered. So they end up producing terribly misleading content. Always call them out so people know.
      Some of the worst out there seem to like the old fashioned 'upright' design, but don't really explain why in a way that holds water and makes any sense, and so peddle that formfactor's non-existent virtues in completely misleading fashion that ignores all the drawbacks. The Lupe, despite best intentions, ended up as a product which, as far as I could measure, that was as comparably mediocre as every single other knockoff Dyson copycat clone product-often made by manufacturers that just seem to try to jump on the bangwagon for profit at the expense of the customer. I might sound like some Dyson product fan boy, despite having no allegiance to the company, but I know of no other product which works as well, has the advanced tech in it, and that sets out to solve genuine problems and make real improvements, rather than just peddle gimmicks or sloppily clone Dyson's good ideas poorly at the consumers' expense (as discussed here czcams.com/video/U_qS2i6HQRY/video.html ).

      @@KaylaLahti Yes I was in that position once. There were so many channels peddling obvious nonsense and falsehoods that it almost duped me into a bad purchase, wasting my money. It was for that reason that I had to make this channel, just to help others. The best machine on the market at the moment (performance, convenience), as far as I can assess, is the Dyson V11, which I've reviewed this here czcams.com/video/Wk-1d8T0mmY/video.html and here after 1-year czcams.com/video/sNSr60Vuw0I/video.html . But they're extremely expensive, and many people might not want to spend that much on a premium piece of technology. (Possibly a 'V12' coming out in March, so might want to hold off if you're thinking about getting one). But the cordless stick vac formfactor that Dyson pioneered has changed the way I deal with the chore of vacuuming and made it so much easier. I'd never go back to plug-in now. Otherwise, their 'ball animal 2' mains upright has the best cleaning performance on the market and is cheaper (£200-£300, but the old upright formfactor is much less easy to use, even though that product is generally better than the competition. www.dyson.co.uk/vacuum-cleaners/uprights I reviewed it here, czcams.com/video/YnJ6OqVC_wg/video.html and the similar Light Ball model here czcams.com/video/H8s9eBXeN4E/video.html and after 6 months here czcams.com/video/mLIqvsGLovU/video.html

    I have a few issues with this: you present it as a disadvantage that you have to stand on the floor head to engage it, but I would argue that its ability to stand up on its own is a major advantage over the Dyson, which requires a wall to lean on when not in use. I'm also sceptical about your complaints about the cyclonic system- as long as the filters are good quality, the small amount of dust on them after your test is not a bad result and it should maintain its performance for quite a long time- there is an impressive demonstration on the Lupe youtube channel which shows it maintaining its performance while sucking up a huge amount of fine dust. That said, you make some revealing comments and I think this is a pretty fair review. Lupe has some way to go. Also, I think it's unfair to call channels that receive a free product as 'the worst'- as long as they are transparent about it, plus I have seen Ibaisaic (the Vacuum CZcamsr I follow most closely) make VERY negative reviews of vacuums that were given to him free. The best reviewers will not let it bias their conclusions.

      >> “you present it as a disadvantage that you have to stand on the floor head to engage it, but I would argue that its ability to stand up on its own is a major advantage over the Dyson, which requires a wall to lean on when not in use.”
      I don't think I've ever encountered a home without a wall to prop up against, so I don't accept that the requirement for one is somehow a hindrance. But you don't NEED a wall. You can just put it down or detach the wand from the main unit and rest on the floor in a single action. A common reason to even need to do this is in the first place is to pick something up off the floor anyway, so no loss there bending down. Preparing the floor beforehand and basic forward thinking is a much better approach altogether that solves this minor non-issue at the source. The ability to just 'let go' and everything is OK is much less of an advantage lost than everything else the cordless stick vac formfactor brings over the old-fashioned and cumbersome upright design of the past-such disadvantages are clearly illustrated in this review.
      >> “I'm also sceptical about your complaints about the cyclonic system”
      It wasn’t a ‘test’, as such, that revealed all the dust that escaped their cyclones; it was just one single normal use. The whole point of cyclonic filtration is to minimise the reliance on a filter. The less reliant, the less clogging and less rinsing it needs, as shown here czcams.com/video/T3prXR-aeOg/video.html . As mentioned in the video, Lupe’s cyclones are better than nothing, but they perform inferiorly. And as for the video you reference, it was NOT fine dust they sucked up, it was what appeared to be relatively large particle sand-like material that any crappy cyclonic filtration system can remove. ‘Fine dust’ is dust which conforms to industry standards and constitutes the particle size distribution representative of natural household dust, which is well-defined and can become airborne. That dust is harder to filter out cyclonically, clogs filters, and is abundant in the home-thereby benefitting from superior cyclonic filtration that Dyson have patented so others can’t steal it and are left with a poor kludge. Don't be misled by Lupe's videos.
      >> “I think it's unfair to call channels that receive a free product as 'the worst'- as long as they are transparent about it”
      You’ve misunderstood. I’m not saying, as you’ve implied, that if a channel receives a free product, they automatically therefore constitute the worst. I’m saying some of the worst of the channels out there (as measured by their misleading output) HAVE received one for free. Important distinction. However, even if they declare it’s a freebie, there is good reason to suspect they are compelled (either by directive or psychologically) to say nice things about it and sweep the warts under the rug. In fact, to this day, despite showing a receipt, I'm still accused of working for the company of the product I’ve reviewed for reasons none other than I’ve been mostly positive about it (because there was little negative to say). Logic that absurd. Have you not noticed how many of the genuine weaknesses and problems I expose here are not mentioned on a single ‘paid-for’ review? Why might that be (other than those reviewing it are so incapable and inadequate as reviewers that they don’t even notice obvious failings). Many reviews are extremely poor and do very sloppy, unrepresentative, misleading testing that can lead to conclusions on matters of fact that are false.
      Finally, don’t forget that this video was a ‘relative review’. I compare against what I am able to determine is the best and rank relatively. The Lupe isn’t a ‘bad’ product; it’s just substantially inferior compared to the genuinely best out there (that are, in fact, cheaper). No brainer.

    Great to see a new company come to the market with there take on a Cordless machine! I’ve been following Lupe from the beginning with interest.
    Having watched this review again and several others on the Lupe Pure Cordless and the Dyson V11 Cordless along with reading many reviews from owners of both machines there a few points I’ve picked up on! I’ve not actually tried either machines as yet myself!
    1: Stick form v stand up form..
    One point I see crop up a lot is I can’t stand up the Dyson it falls over, be good for it to stand up on its own! I can see why the Lupe design is appealing! I personally don’t think the design and purpose of the stick form is still fully understood by some...ask yourself why other manufacturers follow with the same design!? The whole idea of it to me is grab and go!
    I get the design of the Lupe and what they are trying to achieve with it and great to see something different on the market! But isn’t the whole cordless idea to make cleaning easier and quicker!
    2: Floor head design..
    Whats interesting is I’ve never understood the need for these dual roller heads! Especially as they are designed to be used on hardfloors and carpets! The front soft roller on carpet surely is counter acting what the brush bar at the back is trying to do which is groom and lift the carpet pile! Whereas the roller surely is flatting it!? Just my perception of the design! This adds extra maintenance for the user too! Large debris can be picked up using the tools initially then use the main head for the rest. A good floor head design doesn’t really need dual rollers!
    One thing with the Lupe is the head is quite bulky on the top which from what I can see limits the places it can get under like low profile furniture, beds and tight corners with ease.
    3: Battery charge..
    I understand the idea of a removal battery to charge as not everyone likes a docking bracket on a wall or may not have room for one either. Again that’s sometimes comes down to personal preference really by the owner/user. Docking station does make for tidier, easier and quicker way to charge without you having to think about it.
    Just a few points as I said I’ve picked up on amongst others by standing back and actually looking at both products in depth from video and written reviews and the company’s websites etc...too. Makes you really think and start to question more about products around you and what to look for before you buy!

      Dyson's stick vacs don't 'fall over' unless you don't stand it up against a wall sensibly using the rubber strip temporarily, or failed to put it away in its charger after use so it's just waiting for a wholly avoidable accident. I've never once had mine fall over and never once felt it was too difficult to prop up against a wall to move something like a chair. Alternatively, you can just take the stick part off the machine or just put it on the floor if you need to; it takes all of 2 seconds. There are stands available if people don't like wall-mounting for some reason (unlike everything else mounted to their walls...).

    I see my deductive reasoning was correct :) overall a very good video. You seem to give credit where it's due recently, which I appreciate and your tests are the most real world I've seen and actually have data. I also think the change you made to the graph showing the accumulation of the injected dust is a great improvement and is more intuitive.
    I actually have some information regarding the Lupe you may find interesting. I contacted them through the live chat on their website to enquire about the lack of motorised tool and whether one will be released. I wasn't sure if it would even be possible, as the hose doesn't have power at the end. My queries were actually forwarded to one of the ex-dyson employees, who confirmed my suspicion. However he mentioned that they're possibly going to make a motorised attachment, but get this - with its own battery. So it will be heavier, another device to charge without a docking station, more batteries unnecessarily manufactured and will likely have a short runtime.
    He did try to reassure me that the straight suction of passive hose attachment is already more than enough to clean carpeted stairs. Maybe the surface dirt, but I can't imagine it removing deep dirt without agitating the carpet with a brush.
    I read the other comments left on this video and saw that someone returned the Lupe within the no quibble returns period, but it was lost by the courier and was uninsured, leaving them with a nasty £500 bill. This was something I was aware of from their website and mentioned it when he advised that I should take advantage of this to try the vacuum cleaner for myself. I explained my concern about the delivery charge and insurance and they said "We can arrange a return delivery in your case as a one-off if you wanted to try it. We already have insurance and the cost is notional." I thought, like you mentioned in another comment, that the lack of free returns was due to them being a smaller company, but given his comment that the cost is basically none existant for them, it would appear that is to encourage the dissatisfied customer to keep the product to avoid the large return costs. This is not what I expected, based on the impression I had from the company, and rubs salt in the commenter (and likely others) lumbered with the £500+delivery costs.

      I suspected that was true about their returns policy. Bit shady, but alas, common practice. Good to know and let others know too. Dyson customer service does it right; no fuss, even if people do take advantage. Not that the rabid vacuum enthusiasts ever mention this. Good comment.

      I disagree. It is a valid question because the term "ex-Dyson employees" is explicitly used in marketing, so fair game to discuss. They deliberately associate with a great company to bolster their reputation. The headlines pointing this out in other articles were clearly presented in this video. I'm morbidly fascinated with Lupe. Seeing their 400W peak rating on the motor immediately raised suspicions given the size of battery they're using. It looks like they've slapped the cheapest space-filling brushed DC motor they could find into a shell with very little consideration given to packaging. At 9S (min 33.3 v) that means they're drawing up to 12 Amps, which is nothing for a quality 18650 but somehow enough to overload and wear something in the system. Again, 12A at 30V would be nothing for a quality brushless of half the size, so either they're using recycled laptop cells or the worlds crappiest brushed motor. Or maybe their fan design is so bad that it stalls out at higher speeds, or starves the motor for cool air? I'd love a teardown on this thing.

    • @Jergling
      @Jergling Před 2 lety +1

      Also, there's no magic in Dyson motors. They're bog standard high KV brushless inrunners that you could get at any RC store these days. The expense is in the engineering - the multistage fan design and shrouding are what make their tiny fan outperform mains Electroluxes and Mieles. Even the V6, using a tiny, stamped sheet ducted axial fan, was more powerful than its handheld contemporaries using traditional radial fans, because of its smart shrouding, blade design, and speed controller.

      I do not believe this statement is true, and is just a subjective opinion. Could you provide quantitative evidence of the peak power density of the two motors to validate your claim? I suspect you couldn’t. What separates Dyson’s motors is their industry-leading power density, and to achieve the values they do requires sophisticated electromagnetic engineering amongst other material, geometric, and fluid dynamic optimisations of their impellor and shaft, that are fully patented so competitors can't steal the technology and design required. Competitor digital motors are very far behind in power density and why they thus have relatively huge heavy motors that are less efficient (waste more energy), and thus why they are always seen to skimp on battery size, run time, or performance, to keep product weight down, as revealed in every cordless review I’ve done.

Your subjectivity about what is 'easier to live with' has no bearing on facts. You claim "The V11 has more than its fair share of shocking design decisions" but objectively evidence none. You are also wrong to suggest I claimed the Lupe is "harder" to empty; in fact, as the video shows, I claimed it is messier to empty and less well designed to avoid splashing dust, just like all the other copycat clones. You would say that Dyson have tried to make it easy to empty but have not been entirely successful because 9 times out of 10 there are still matted hair and fibres clinging to the micro-mesh filter inside the canister and no amount of shaking or forceful ejection will dislodge it. You have to resort to dismantling or putting your hand inside. You would also mention that the V11 filter is prone to clogging and no amount of washing ever restores it's original state. You'd mention that once you have washed the V11 filter, it takes 24 hours to dry and it only ever seems to need washing more frequently with age. The only objective test you performed is disputed by a number of other online tests and reviews. @Ian Woodland The failings of the V11 are pointed out in the review about the V11; this was a review about the Lupe and being compared with the V11. I've seen no objective evidence supporting 90% failure to remove hair and fibres on the mesh filter; I've no idea what you're doing but I've never seen that happen. If you'd like to present some evidence for review, showing both how to reproduce the issue *and* that it causes machine failure, feel free. Otherwise, talk is cheap. I've also seen no evidence at all that the filter can clog from normal household dust it was designed for in a way that cannot be restored by following the manufacturer's instructions. Again, if you can convincingly evidence exactly how to reproduce this and quantify how it impairs performance for scrutiny and review, I'll believe you; otherwise it's just another petty anecdote anyone can make up. I've seen no evidence anyone reputable disputes the tests I do, nor have I seen the reasoning they give with supporting evidence to see if any of it holds water. Anyone could say what you're saying. Unless you have any evidence to support it, much like as is shown to support the things I say, then you're not going to convince anyone with an ounce of sense and respectability. People can review the evidence I present and make their own minds up; you, alas, are all talk and seem to simply dislike that evidence reveals the V11 is an objectively superior product to the Lupe. There’s nothing in the video which isn’t a fact. You haven’t stated anything you disagree with and evidenced why, so I can only assume you agree.
      >> “'Built to last' means it is fully modular so you can replace parts (unlike the Dyson where you need a whole new machine)”
      Did you fact-check anything before you spoke? If you had done, you’d learn that the Dyson machines are fully modular. Where do you think Lupe got their idea from?
      >> “the weight is distributed towards the floor which makes it easier to use for longer (unlike a Dyson)”
      Not for above floor cleaning, and the Dyson is light above floor, more so than any other machine I’ve measured. The disadvantages of the Lupe’s approach are well evidenced in the video. I suggest you watch it. You've also ignored the issue of bulk, inertia, and excess materials consumption, all covered in the video.
      >> “the floor-standing aspect is a benefit so you don't have to leave it leaning against a wall or on the floor (unlike a Dyson)”
      That ‘benefit’ you speak of comes with drawbacks that were evidenced in the video. And there’s no problem with resting a cordless stick vac against a wall or anywhere else suitable. It works well and is very easy. The benefits of the stickvac formfactor vastly outweight not standing up on its own.
      >> “"You have to connect the battery, taking up table space" - really?! hahaha. Completely missing the point.”
      The video outlined the problems with this. It’s an avoidable hassle and there are far more elegant and efficient solutions if you design right.
      >> “It sounds like someone is bitter that they didn't get a free version!”
      If I’d got a free version, I’d have been accused (rightly) as being a shill.
      You make no sense, don’t claim to disagree with anything, don’t evidence your position well, and just come across as disgruntled that the facts presented conflict with what you’d rather be true. My Mum, for example, would love an upright cleaner as she finds the stick vacuums too heavy to carry for long periods; my wife would love a vacuum cleaner that lasted for the whole home and didn’t need emptying half way through. I have a Dyson v8, and it’s awful on hard floors and carpets and has to be on full power to even get the poor results it does. As such, I am still considering a Lupe because the majority of other professional reviews are considerably more gracious and considered than yours (good points and bad) - as are the large majority of user reviews too. Their cyclone orientation makes no sense. When the vacuum is in regular use aren’t the cyclones oriented in the wrong direction? With the end of the cone pointing up in the air? Surely there must be more to the cyclone assembly unless this is something they overlooked. Even when the cleaner is on the horizontal or at a slight angle during cleaning only the parallel to the normal force (from gravity) will be pulling the dust out of the cyclones. This could be why they are so ineffective.

    • @VacuumFacts
      @VacuumFacts  Před 3 lety

      That's not how cyclones work; they work upside down; gravity is a relatively negligible force in there. Their cyclone performance weakness is in greater subtleties in the design. Those better designs are patented by their inventors, so they're left with crappy immitations that don't work as well, much like as described here: czcams.com/video/U_qS2i6HQRY/video.html It might say 'cyclonic' on the tin, but it doesn't work like a Dyson; it's patented.

      @orangesforall2053 Před 3 lety

      Hmm gravity has a lot to due with cyclones, I do agree with you that the lupe has a poor design. But gravity is the whole reason cyclones work. Gravity is the force that acts on the air and the particles in the airflow. The cyclones spin the air rapidly which through centrifugal forces makes small mass more substantial so they are spun out of the airstream. Gravity then pulls these particles out of the tips of the cyclones and into the discharge chamber. The reason i mention this is because I think the tips of the lupes cyclones are getting blocked by dust because they are constantly upside down, they still work upside down but they need to be turned upright so the dust can be expelled.

    • @orangesforall2053
      @orangesforall2053 Před 3 lety

      The Dyson v11 has a much more advanced cyclone design, as seen by the larger number of cyclones to reduce airflow restriction, the fact that lupe could only use 4 cyclones contributes to its ass performance in carpet cleaning. It would be interesting to do a test and see if the cyclones are more effective if they are oriented correctly every now and then so they can clear themselves of dust.
