- From MRF 51, Callas thrills with Imogene's opening aria.
Performed at a concert performance of Bellini's wonderful Il Pirata,
Carnegie Hall, New York City, January 27 1959.
Nicola Rescigno conducting.
I'll be uploading the entire performance at a later date :)
Lyrics in English:
IMOGENE
Rise; my duty is the compassion
that sends me to the aid of strangers
driven to these shores by chance or tempest:
this is an ancient law of Caldora.
Who are you, unfortunate men?
Whence have you come?
ITULBO
We left royal Messina at dawn;
our sails were set for Palermo.
IMOGENE
For Palermo!
Ah, you ploughed a cruel sea.
A scene of horrible war, strangers, is that sea.
ITULBO
(Heavens!)
IMOGENE
Did you meet any of those pirates?
ITULBO
They were defeated, scattered... destroyed...
IMOGENE
And their leader?
ITULBO
Their leader? (What a question!)
Maybe he’s in chains, or dead.
IMOGENE
Dead!
ADELE (to Imogene)
(Ah, what are you doing? Take care.)
IMOGENE
(Oh, how terrified I am!)
(At a sign from Adele the pirates move away; Imogene takes Adele aside.)
IMOGENE
I dreamt he was wounded, exhausted,
on a deserted, barren shore,
all bathed in his blood,
I rent the sky with my cries,
with my cries...etc.
...but no voice replied,
the very breeze, the sea was silent.
Nature was deaf to my weeping,
to my grief, nature was deaf
to my weeping, my grief, etc.
ADELE
(Pray cease...try to dispel
these visions of horror, etc.)
CHORUS
(She laments; a secret sorrow
always afflicts the unhappy lady, etc.)
IMOGENE
Ah, listen further.
Suddenly my husband
appeared before me, angry and grim.
I, he shouted, I caused his death,
and he seized me and dragged me away with him.
ah!
CHORUS
Oh heaven!
IMOGENE
Dumb, crushed, frightened,
I was carried off far away
and there followed me on the wind
the sigh of a dying man...
I can still hear that sigh.
O my faithful Adele, I fully
understand this dream came true still.
CHORUS
She laments, oh unhappy woman!
ADELE
You fear hollow shadows.
O God, calm yourself! etc.
CHORUS
(She laments, oh unhappy woman, she laments still,
the unhappy woman suffers ceaselessly.
She laments; Oh unhappy woman, ceaseless sorrow, etc.)
GUALTIERO
(comes out of the Hermit’s dwelling but the latter
makes him re-enter.)
Heaven! ‘Tis she!
IMOGENE
Oh, God! What do I hear?
What was that groan?
ITULBO
He is a sad castaway, ill,
wretched, demented, whom fortune and the raging sea
have deprived of all his possessions.
IMOGENE
Let us help him...
Oh, dear Adele, what a tumult he aroused in me,
what a tumult...etc.
(Hapless one, I too am delirious,
obsessed by a vain love:
I see you in every object,
O torment of my heart. -
Ah, while I breathe you will be
with me though you are dead:
you will eternally be the reason for my grief,
the reason, etc.)
ADELE, CHORUS
Come back quietly to the castle,
the strangers will have help.
You see that their distress
is sad for you to witness. - Hudba
Superhuman Callas !!!
