Resident Evil 4 Remake Made Me A Believer

  • I've long regarded RE4 as the beginning of the end of what I look for in Resident Evil. A game which abandoned the series identity and turned it down a path which wouldn't be righted till 7 revived the series years later.
After playing the chainsaw demo I was left full of concern, the enemies went down too easy and the resources seemed never ending, but after completing the game some 20+ hours later that concern wasn’t justified the game is a masterpiece!
In this review I'm going to break down why that is, what they’ve changed to elevate the experience and why it sits right up there with the best in the entire series.

I honestly really enjoyed this review. I had a similar experience as you did with the original re4 when I played it. I always thought the game was alright but I never understood the praise it got for being one of the best games of all time. Then after playing the remake I feel like I got to properly see and understand the vision of re4. But I found it really odd we both had similar experiences with the original and the remake.

To me, Resident Evil 4 Remake is the one game that united the entire Resident Evil fan base. Or at least the majority of them that come from the classic camp and the contemporary camp. I personally come from a mixture where I’ve played both the classic fixed-camera gameplay and the contemporary over-the-shoulder aiming camp. I do also appreciate the extra lore they’ve expanded upon while also paying respects to the original.
In a bunch of ways, this really reminds me of the book I’m currently writing called “The Road Ranger.” Which is actually a rewrite of a book I wrote years ago called “Road Ranger’s Rise.” The story of the book is about Matt Santos, a former Calivadan Army Ranger veteran wanting to rebuild his life with his parents after he left military service after six years. But this comes crumbling down after his mother is assassinated and despite the efforts of his lady friend Maria Garcia in the FBI, the police refuse to do anything. And the Ranger goes on a rampage to find who is responsible which he doesn’t realize until later, someone close to him set this all up.
Comparing the original book and the rewrite, here are some examples:
    - Original book opening: Matt Santos is in a big battle which ultimately doesn’t have much to do with the main story. This is largely to establish his experience in war.
    - Rewrite book opening: There is no big battle. Rather Matt is in his car pondering what led him up to this point. He goes over his desire (revenge for his mother’s murder), his fear (possibly die or jail time), and his misbelief (he believes his mother is innocent). This essentially is his internal conflict. After his pondering, he loads up a Glock 19 pistol, goes to a warehouse, and starts shooting some gangsters.
    - Original book’s disaster moment: While confronting his stepdad’s betrayal, Matt is shot by a sniper but is saved by Maria. She takes him to her mom’s house and she (Maria’s mother) heals him without needing to go to the hospital.
    - Rewrite book’s disaster moment: While Matt is about to call Maria in to make an arrest, Matt is soon stabbed by his own stepfather once Matt had his guard brought down. Just as Matt is stabbed, his gun goes off but doesn’t hurt or kill anybody. The gunshot sound caused Maria to swoop in and find Matt is seriously wounded. She tries to arrest Matt’s stepfather but he escapes by vehicle. Which leaves her to get Matt to the hospital and Matt nearly dies if it wasn’t for the doctors.
    - Original book’s climax: Shoot some bad guys in a mansion and a car chase scene in Calivada.
    - Rewrite book’s climax: Shoot some bad guys and a car chase scene in the Baja wasteland which is in the former Mexico.
Apart from these differences among others, the story between both books are largely the same. Sorry for blowing up your comments like this but I could kinda relate in some way comparing Resident Evil 4 Original and Resident Evil 4 Remake with my own work of fiction. For the record, it’s not done yet. But I’d be more than happy to let you read it if you’re interested. And don’t worry: You don’t need to read the original book to understand this rewrite.

I finished RE4 back in December ‘05. It was a transcendent experience. The game is propulsive and has sublime pacing. I played through it again for like the fourth or fifth time last October. My only complaint now is the aiming feels sluggish. I don’t mind the QTEs either.
Re4 Remake is beautiful. I’m glad you like it. It’s like they turned up the horror, turned down the lighting and tuned up the aiming. I know folks criticize this “remake culture” we’re in now, and I partly agree, but RE4R is so good I can’t complain. I too think they did a much better job with Luis’ arc and characterization.
Anyway, great review. You seem to have a love for these games even though you’re a survival horror purist, and that passion shows through. Big Ups!
Edit: 21:51 The knife changes in RE4R I originally disliked but I came around in the end as they add to the decisions you have to make and consequences you have to deal with. I was initially disappointed in the changes because my knife broke in Chapter 1 at the stake/village fight and I couldn’t fix it for a long time.

When you talked about how RE4 (particularly the original) ties in very little to the prior/later games' storylines, I wondered if making this one other change with Krauser could have helped...
As stated earlier, I liked how the RE4 Remake actually sets up Krauser's relationship with Leon earlier on and even references details of the "Operation Javier" storyline from Darkside Chronicles. With that in mind, I started to think that RE4 Remake could have gone further with those ties and had Krauser's transformation result from a G-Virus sample provided by Wesker, rather than a Dominant Plaga. Taking more inspiration from his experiences with Manuela Hidalgo, Krauser seeks out a virus to heal his arm, which also lets him do those superhuman acrobatic feats. Then, once Krauser takes too much damage from Leon at once, his chest and arms become malformed like what we see in that final encounter.
This would add another consequence to Ada's involvement in RE2's events, where she salvaged a sample of G-mutated tissue for Wesker. Also, this would allow Leon to fight at least one mutant created from the classic Umbrella viruses in RE4. Rather than getting the Dominant Plaga genome from Krauser's corpse, Wesker could instead receive a Dominant Plaga that Krauser stole from Luis after attacking him.
Though, I do see one possible inconvenience for the story. Leon would need to incinerate Krauser's body after giving him that mercy "kill", so his body does not simply regenerate back and undergo additional transformations like William Birkin.

You gave an excellent review that was definitely worth the wait. To share a lot of my thoughts in response below…
I am very glad for you, that a version of RE4 finally exists, where the core gameplay succeeds in giving you that delicate blend of Survival Horror decision-making and intense third-person shooter action. Back when I played the original RE4, the mechanics as they were worked well enough for me. But I can see why they did not quite work for you, until the RE4 Remake brought in its new additions/modifications.
Pretty much all of the few shortcomings I had with the original RE4 itself have seemingly been addressed. In particular, I like how Krauser appears to have been properly set up in RE4 Remake’s narrative. This helps RE: The Darkside Chronicles’ to no longer feel like mandatory viewing, just for one to understand what on Earth is Krauser’s deal with Leon.
That being said, RE4 Remake also appears to cut/downgrade certain things I cared about from the original, which might even it out. Besides the shortcomings you stated, I am particularly disappointed by the lack of Leon’s boss battle against U-3 and “Assignment Ada” as another bonus mode. *Granted, we are still waiting for the all-but-confirmed “Separate Ways” bonus campaign, and an expanded SW mode could provide suitable stand-ins for that missing content.* Also, I am still waiting for Ada, Wesker, and the original’s fourth map to be brought into the remade Mercenaries Mode.
Therefore, I have chosen to wait until I have seen the RE4 Remake’s final expansion, before I buy it for myself. But this is still merely a question of “when” I buy it, rather than “if”. For now, RE Village will hold me over, since I have finally gotten my own copy of it. Once I finish that, I can share my more definitive opinion of RE Village.

i think i personally am in a camp of players who just like to play fun games. with the exception of re6's god-awful gameplay design. I think i have not played a single resident evil that i don't like. I love the classic games, I also absolutely love re4 and like re5 and 8. Me personally i keep very low standards with what I expect from a series, for me Resident Evil is all about the characters and addictive gameplay loop. So I usually only judge games for what they are, instead of comparing them to the overall IP.
and let me give you my personal perspective on the philosophy behind the original re4. Back in 2020 when i first played it, I was an absolute wimp who stopped playing outlast in chapter 1 and had RE2 remake just eating dust on his desktop. But when i played re4, the fear was just slightly relaxed enough for a new player like me to get through it, in my personal opinion no game in the survival horror genre has ever come close to the balance that the original re4 provides when it comes to a sense of horror and power, and that's partly because of its unique focus on introducing new players to the genre, that many games don't do. But after my experience with re4, i finally found the confidence in myself to tackle more games like it, and today i have game series like dead space, silent hill, evil within, the entirety of RE (yes even Survivor, it was not a pleasant experience) under my belt, and am currently getting through eternal darkness.
So i personally owe my new found obsession with survival horror because of original Re4, and it is also a game the spoiled that showed me the potential of inserting dynamic gameplay elements into horror and permanently implanted a disdain in me for horror games like outlast because of their boring gameplay loop that leave nothing for creativity.
