From the very beginning, Christopher Nolan has changed the way we watch movies. From his experiments with non-linear timelines to his high-concept plots, Nolan brings something new to the table every time out. The same can be said for how he uses a rather tired cinematic trope: the movie montage. In this video essay, we’ll explore the inspired and creative ways Christopher Nolan takes the film language of a movie montage and elevates it beyond cliche.
When we think of a movie montage, what comes to mind? The typical training montage perhaps best associated with Rocky has been parroted and parodied endlessly (e.g., Team America: World Police). And, yet, somehow Christopher Nolan was able to bring legitimacy back to the movie montage - look no further than the Batman training montage in Batman Begins. The first way Christopher Nolan subverts the typical training montage is to place it in the middle of Act One. In this case, Bruce Wayne isn’t just training to fight the big, bad villain, we are given exposition, backstory, and the beginnings of his entire character arc.
Beyond elevating the training montage, Christopher Nolan also uses the movie montage to end his movies. In movies like Dunkirk, Interstellar, The Dark Knight Rises and The Prestige, Nolan gives us something like a “movie montage epilogue.” More than simply tying up loose ends, Nolan gives us a glimpse of the past, present and future. In the case of Dunkirk, he is able to use voice over to create a “thematic montage,” where the virtues and bravery of that particularly harrowing situation are honored and cherished in montage.
The final way Christopher Nolan reinvents the movie montage is to concentrate emotional catharsis. The best example of this comes from Interstellar as we watch Cooper watch a series of video messages sent from his children during the decades he’s been gone. The movie montage is often used to accelerate time but, in this case, he’s accelerating emotion.
In short, Christopher Nolan shows us that the movie montage is more than just a laughable trope - it can be wielded in fresh and exciting ways. Whether you take a training montage and use it to establish character, construct thematic and resonant endings, or amplify the emotions of your characters, a movie montage just might be the best way to do it.

I'm a simple guy, I see Christopher Nolan on a video title, I see it immediately
That is the way
You’re not alone brother
You see i'm a guy with simple taste I enjoy Nolan, Zimmer and Gasoline.
Me too!!
Same here mate, same here
Dang, that Interstellar's emotional and Dunkirk's thematic montage always hits hard.
Both were great scenes
That montage when Cooper leaves her at her bed and then she runs after him only to discover he's already gone. We then hear the sound of the rocket while he's still in his car. Man, it always breaks my heart
Lots of gut-punches in that film
I just found out that could be parralel to that montage scene, she did not say goodbye to him, until it was too late, and she did not send him message until it was too late 🧐
"PLEASE DONT STOP MAKING GOOD CONTENT"
no plans to :)
Who are you quoting?
@@visualsforyou7120
Me. And the others who liked the comment.
there's no ending montage like TDKR ending, wrapping up one of the best trilogies to ever be made
Agreed, very impressive how Nolan put that together
christopher nolan is a magician with emotion
It's such an amazing thing to watch Christopher's progression throw his films, even when he didn't have huge possibilities he managed to make great movies with what's possible and making his best!
Production value isn't going to replace vision and creativity!
Can we stop for a second and thank Studio Binder from the bottom of our hearts, please?❤️
That Interstellar scene made me cry once again tho.
YES
"THANK YOU" Studio Binder for all you all do...
I wish you had your own Filmmaking school. I'd be the first to reserve my seat. 😊
This is our school!
i love the transition from the Rocky music to the Inception score at 1:31. the fact that they’re in the same key is super satisfying.
audio match cut!
@@StudioBinder very nice.
I love this channel. The essay on Nolan’s montage is amazing. He is one the best directors of our generation. The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Dunkirk, Interstellar, and The Prestige are some of best work to date.
His filmography is full of masterclasses for us
I loved montage when the dream was collapsing in Inception, and the moment when DiCaprio opened his eyes.
Classic scene
The Interstellar videomessage scene is one of the best scenes I know. How the music builds and then stops abruptly a when the messages end and he is left alone, even the music leaves, just him in silence. Boy that made me cry.
a great gut punch of a scene
WOW... I did not realize that about the music...
Good to know.
His Dark Knight montage’s are things of beauty and to see how he’s developed them is nothing short of phenomenal. The man definitely knows what he’s doing!
I love how StudioBinder is now incorporating Tenet footage when analyzing Nolan's work. Also clearly you watched Tenet, because the footage you guys used are part of montages as well!
we have an article on Tenet in our blog! www.studiobinder.com/blog/tenet-movie-plot-explained/
I also feel something after watching Chris nolan movies, like I've discovered something new and I keep thinking about the movie for a long time after the movie ends and I won't be interested in doing anything other than that, and also my brain feels exhausted like I've written a test or something
I love him
That one scene in interstellar is the emotional catalyst that lasts for rest of the movie.
Definitely makes the stakes clear and urgent to us
@@StudioBinder Exactly
This is not a montage scene. This is a gigantic turning point and fast forwarding through it was one of his extremely rare mistakes imo. Cooper sees Murph for the first time after that thing with space time difference. 23 years have passed for her. He says "Murph" and that's it, not even a little emotion of a father watching the woman his daughter has turned into. Same with Tom... Grandchild was awesome, but he doesn't even know the kid.
@@alexispapageorgiou72 what?
@@BFG-hv2ml Deleted my last 4 lines. Happy?
The Rocky montage was elevated homage in Creed to a point where the new main character Adonis is actually giving full acknowledgement to the former main character Rocky both on screen and in meta context to us behind the 4th wall. To think that the first Rocky montage was in preparation for the antagonist Apollo and now Apollo's son is doing the same in dedication to Rocky is pure Cinema Bliss!
I tried to figure it out why Christopher Nolan’ films make me so tearful. In spite of the lack of cruel and awful character’s destiny, as the majority of viewers, I constantly feel tension. I worry about the crucial character as friend. It caused by exceptional ability to make those montage. The impeccable example with scene in the Interstellar.
Amazing. I did cry at the end of Dunkirk, and now I know how to utilize this tool the right way.
This time it's chris nolan's Climax montage from inception ,really mind blowing 🤯🤯
Great scene!
Hey studio binder can you make a video on directing style of Damien chazzlle , please it's a request
A buddy of mine, Robert Hatch. is in Damien Chazelle's film "First Man". Robert portrayed one of the suit technicians at the Cape who helped get Neil Armstrong dressed.

love Chazelle, but for a directing style video we'll probably wait until he has a bigger filmography. Might still breakdown one of his films though!

That scene from Interstellar. What a genius !
I accept all criticism, but i think the most emotional moment in Interstellar (and also in Nolan's filmographie) is Cooper's departure. It gaves me so much chills!
That was a great moment!
Brilliant
Didn’t realize Nolan reinvented the montage
Great video guys!
The thesis of films done by StudioBinder is top notch. I would like to see a new series of StudioBinder having Q&A sessions with the director of a film. I'm pretty sure that the sessions will be insightful and they would be way better than the regular media interviews.🤞🏼

When will this boring monday end...?
STUDIOBINDER: I heard u need some good content😊😊
That's what we're here for :)
Would you ever consider a study on how well crafted the character of John Kramer is written and portrayed by Tobin Bell; through the entire series we get more of his back story and the pivotal moments that shaped his mentality. Probably one of the best written characters in any horror film. 🤷♂️. At least that’s how I fell and I’m not particularly a fan of horror. It’s often boring, unless a psychological thriller. But doing a study on horror I came through the saw series and was blown away at the depths they went into with his character. And Tobin Bell🙌🤙.
I love Christopher Nolan absolutely genius
One of the best!
First two minutes of "UP", rollercoaster of emotion.
"Chris Nolan bought a change in how the standard storytelling device works". He bought a change in how I relate myself to everyone in this world. He bought a change in how I look at my watch. He is awesome. Thanks StudioBinder

Wouldn't you say most of Nolan's montages are thematic AND emotional?
Take TDK, Interstellar, and Dunkirk: for the TDK that montage frames the consequences, and stakes of the entire narrative as well as Batman's character arc--it undoubtedly evokes chills and emotions in the audience alike. For Interstellar, that movie thematically centers around the transcendence of love through time--as the montage communicates, but is equal in emotional weight as pointed out in the video. For Dunkirk, it's difficult not to see those shots and not FEEL the cost of the sacrifice for their survival.
In other words, montages seem to be the convergence points of multiple parts of the narrative and character arcs... and well that's what an emotional response is no..? A connection or convergence to stimuli that elicits a response. Similarly, with theme--multiple parts of the story have to be put together (hopefully) to extrapolate the themes from a film. Could one say then that Nolan effectively utilizes montage to its potential? (I understand this is a bit of a semantic and stylistic question, but I thought it was just an interesting observation).
It all comes down to direction; I definitely agree that those three montages reflect on the film's themes. Part of Nolan's brilliance!
Love this series
Keep it up dude

When making a movie... Make it where your story is like you putting your foot into someone's chest, touching their heart... so much so, that when they leave the movie theater... they take your shoe with them...

yup, very innovative

My favorite montage was the DUNES in Conan the barbarian. with Arnold . . the spikes... The knowing of impending battle... Witnessing the enemies horses ride down upon our heroes... All to be wrapped up with Arnold's monologue.. that was in my mind.. Memorable.
