-Factors to consider when landing a helicopter on a moving ship
Md500 helicopter landing on a fishingvessel in the pacific.
As a tuna pilot - tunaboat landings can be very demanding, depending on the current weight or speed of the ship, wind, angle of the sun and ocean state. Flying to the relative wind instead of true wind is also important. I.e the wind blowing over deck, not the wind blowing over the water, because youre aiming for the deck, right? Therefore you want to fly according to what the wind is doing over the deck, NOT the water. It will reduce the amount of pedal and collective inputs or pilot workload.
Always take a look at the flag on the bow of the ship, this way you know what to expect when youre closing in on the deck. I found that most of the time its either headwind or quartering tailwind.
Trying to stay in ETL all the way down to the markings may seem difficult but is a great technique. Always try to make it easy for yourself by staying in areas where the workload is less!

It's very easy to miss the tuna trash life when you see this video on a rainy December day in Afghanistan. Thanks Mille

Hey! Yes thats life after tunaboats... But happy I did it pre-covid. Wouldnt have made it if it wasnt for the portcalls every now and then. Think my longest trip was 53 days...
