The Pre-Sequal explains the rats. They were the Hyperion workers that were building Helios and somehow got infected with "space herps". It drove them crazy and cannibalistic. You had to fight your way through them on your way to the Eye of Helios. I'm guessing they were dumped on Pandora like everything/everyone else and became what we see in BL2.
Would be quite ironic if polluted, dusty and spore filled air of Pandora actually cured the infection
Or at least stopped the growth of tumors...
It never says they were rats tho. I can see minor similarities i guess but they are boils in game and theres no lore saying jack didnt just vent them to space too
@@mackwhite374 minor similarities? They look incredibly similar and have some dialogue that is identical.
@Graywolf Dracon thats just lazy lack of writing for the dialogue and no the dont. The boils all wear hyperion armor and the badasses have a seperate character model. Also the game even states they came from toxic mines and tunnels which would far more imply they were dahl miners than anything else
oh I thought the rats were just the result of eridium experiments on people, maybe on psychos. Mostly because of the "lab-rat" enemy variant and they aren't in bl1
Fun fact in borderlands you have to stay in the border of the lands or else the turrets shoot you to death, this also makes them the most powerful enemy in the game
Learn that the hard way trying to clip through the map to break the game
Who will win?
- The Destroyer, vault monster capable of devouring the universe.
OR
- 1 Angry Border Turret.
@@PlebNC I think the Destroyer would eat the turret from behind it, then the turret would shoot the Destroyer from the inside, killing it with a single shot.
@@ALLMINDmercenarysupportsystem
Destroyer: Eats turret.
Turret: "You fool! This was my plan all along!" *Bang!*
Wait, what happens if the Destroyer registers at a New U Station? I know they're non-canon story wise existing to facilitate gameplay but it would be hilarious to fight the Destroyer in the most epic fight of the series, just notice there was a New U behind it and hear one of the respawn quips as the Destroyer is reborn for round 2.
My theory for the rats is that they were out casts, like ex dhal miners and stayed underground in the sewers because of the monsters unleashed after the 7 year winter.
I thought they were bi-products of Slag Experimentation.
I always thought the quarantine zone in the veins of Helios in tps was the origin of the rats
Agreed ir they could have been from helios ! Remember the zombie like creatures in the presequal???
actually canonically they are the result of Hyperion experimentation
No it’s literally explained who they are in pre sequel this wasn’t thought out theory
14:00 Colonel Zarpedon also had her rank on her forehead, It's visible after killing her. She also wears a green uniform similar to Axton's. Hector may have somehow removed his rank out of disrespect because of Dahl's betrayal, though Axton and Zarpedon were also not happy with Dahl so who knows.
Knowing Axton he probably doesn't care enough
I’d imagine the Crimson Shield would be an elite defense force of Sanctuary and Atlas
And as a reference to the Crimson Lance and Crimson Raiders
i think the thing with moxxi being called kandi was probably something to do with her being a hodunk and leaving them. because i remember there being a few lines in bl2 talking about how moxxi was meant to be married off to someone so maybe she was meant to be married off to flynt but she left the hodunks and changed her name or something and they probably just scrapped the bit of lore. but i might be wrong about the lines existing
No the lines exist forsure. I think it was Ellie they tried to marry off though
Your absolutely right there is a line of dialog were we find out that moxi was a hodunk scooter and eli are moxies children and it was eli they wanted to marry off
@@antonfowler6582 I think I remember that Ellie is also Moxie's daughter? I may be wrong
@@antonfowler6582 I think I remember that Ellie is also Moxie's daughter? I may be wrong
It's interesting that even after all those years there is still something to discover about Borderlands and its characters.
1) Crimson Shield is a great idea. But I guess it would made Rhys competent so that's why it was scrapped.
2) Perhaps Kandi was supposed to be Baron Flynt's girlfriend or something like that but the idea was scrapped and Moxxi was introduced. Or Candi was Captain's girlfriend and Moxxi's sister or rival or something.
3) Flak as oar would've been weird.
4) Marcus looks better how he looks now. He looks more jolly and less threatening which is good for a businessman.
5) I never noticed that Typhon is wearing a hazmat suit but it makes sense.
6) The branding of soldiers is a good reminder how the megacorporations treat their people; a mix of slaves and goods.
I mean, he still kind of is, but he still has that awkward goofball aspect that he had from Tales, so I guess maybe that and the potential dragging of the pace during the Promethia part of the game, were why they were cut.
Still, it's a shame that there wasn't at least some details that were there, for anyone with a keen eye and deduction skills to piece together.
Colonel Zarpedon has her rank embedded in her skin as well! So I think that they probably just forgot about it for Hector, or if we want to try and give a canon reason then Dahl started doing this maybe after abandoning so many people on planets that they needed to make sure who was still Dahl and who wasn't.
or maybe it's somewhere else, like his chest? leg? arm? butt?
Perhaps Hector removed his after Dahl abandoned Pandora.
I though Hector was a mercenary
and not a Dahl soldier.
@@seancooper5268 Dahl soldier part of the force who initially occupied Pandora. Effectively became a merc after Dahl abandoned the planet when Atlas rolled in.
Hector could have removed his rank from his forehead and the plants healed his skin, though stretching out that canon lore.
I had always assumed the rats where experimented on by Hyperion the "lab rats" are the most messed up ones and they only appear on bl2 the same one as the rest of the Hyperion experiments
they are, literally a loading screen tip in bl2
thing with moxxi is "kandi" could been her original name as old moxxi before she become successful was with bandit groups more so she could been flynt's girl maybe before she changed her name and took up new path.
Please keep it up these small facts were very interesting to the world building of borderlands. Especially the rank embedded on Axton's forehead. Never had a single thought on why it was there but now it is intriguing to imagine dahl infantry all displaying their rank on their persons.
14:24
That isnt true, Colonel Zarpadon has her rank on her skull too, right over her eye same as Axton, It is slightly different aswell. I think they just forgot when it came to Hector.
Or maybe Hector decided to remove it cause of how much he hated Dahl?
@@graywolfdracon that is quite possible aswell, although i wonder how he did it if that were the case...
Typhon's suit looks a lot like protective outfits from S.T.A.L.K.E.R. , with embedded front armor plates and life support systems
On top of that he was a turd farmer before becoming a vault hunter so a hazmat suit is probably part of that.
It is implied that when Maya Phaselocks Rats, she's encompassing them in an entirely separate dimension, in which they briefly see... Things.
If i remember, the Ninja turtles quest talks about hyperion experiments, or i think it was talking about Lab Rats
I desperately want to know more about the Goliaths in bl2 because there so interesting to think abt what happened to them
One of the biggest problems is just how good the Promethea arc in BL3 was in the a game story that was kinda meh (if not bad). Reis, the Crimson lance, Zer0, and Lorelei were extremely good, while katagawa and the truant brothers were a little overboard, still did a good job at carrying the Maliwan vs. Atlas story forward.
I wish we had more of this story that felt really short compared to the Eden 6 that dragged on for far to long and Necrotephao (I butchered that) that honestly just felt added in last second for no reason but to keep the story from feeling too short.
Lorelei was annoying asf and katagawa was a way better villain than the calypsos
Imagine the characters reaction to when salvador's ability is to just, use his other arm.
Werent the Rats experimented on? I remember voicelines and the TMNT quest eluding to that.
Also the big lanky one has L A S E R Beams for eyes, would fit how in Borderlands 2 Hyperion was experimenting with Slag and yeeting them Rats wouldnt be that hard to cause trouble.
What attire Chars wear along with the environments are always something that I have a tendency to look at in these games.
Would love if they incorporate the Crimson Shield in 4. They look so awesome and Atlas could use more love.
Thought of this as well and this would also maybe result in making rhys being focused as a maincharacter for the game rather than ava which pretty much the entire fanbase would be pleased with
@@MrWellplayingIt's a bit too late for that, sadly: They turned Rhys into a bad guy in New Tales of the Borderlands (And a really bad one at being so, at that)
Kandi as a rival to Moxxi is such a great idea. Also would be cool to see her as a playable character, though I guess the Baroness does kinda fit that bill
i think the Flynt they were referring to is the second to last boss of bl1, baron flynt, there is a Flynt in every game after all (and in the hammerlock dlc for bl2), Baron, Captain, Sparky and Zane Flynt .
despite flynt being dead, she might've just been his widow. Perhaps they wanted her to be more of a villain that was avenging her husband?
Wasn't the rats the maintenance people from hyperion who got infected with fumes or somthing in pre sequel
Are we forgetting that BARON Flynt from 1 was one of the final bosses in the game and held a massive amount of sway for a bandit? That's who they're referencing when they mention Flynt in Moxxi's concept art, not Captain Flynt, who was intended as a joke, since Baron was one of the final human enemies in Borderlands 1 and the first guy you kill in 2.
Also, I don't think Typhon is wearing a hazmat suit, but a flight suit. The shattered helmet and mask around his neck look at least a little like a mixture of modern flight helmets used in fighter jets and sci-fi EVA helmets (like an astronaut's). Given we know that Typhon has at least flown ships, it'd make sense that he's wearing a flight suit.
I imagine the Flynt mentioned in Moxxi's art is the playable character more so than Captain Flynt but ok
I love your content! I love the lore of these games and you're the only channel that covers it extensively!
Keep up the good work! 😍
Seems like the Atlas group was a parody of 7(ish) Samurai.
Would have been cool to fight all 7 as a boss with each one being a modified base enemy.
There definitely appears to be some kind of experimentation, or something, going on in The Fridge with regards to the Rats, specifically behind the door that Laney White comes out of. Also, to my eye, Typhon's suit looks more like a fighter-pilot's suit, like something you'd see from the Air Force.
I always presumed Tina’s ‘sleeve’ was to cover S/H scars or other experimentation marks. I wouldn’t be surprised if she’d had some form of electro-shock while captured.
I was actually kinda gutted the Rats never returned in BL3 hope we see those pests come back cos their lore (as spars as it is) always intrigued me.
New Tales From The Borderlands should have just followed Typhon's story from his past for 3 big reasons 1) theybwanted another Vault Monster on Prometheus but it made no sense with the current narrative, but we already had the FIRST Vault opened in the past, 2) Typhon's Logs painted an interesting & fantastical tale I could imagine being split into 5 parts (1: Pandora-Prometheus, 2: Prometheus & First Vault, 3: The Jakobs Family, 4: Pandora & DeLeon's meeting of Lena (was that her name?), 5: Finding Nekrotafeyo & fighting The Serpent). 3rd reason is ANYTHING would have been a better story compared to that schlock fest of crap...
Man I love these types of borderlands videos so much
The crimson shield alone could make for a great spinoff game.
I'd say the alien flak would have worked if there were more alien species in the game.
Scrapping the Crimson Sheild was the right choice. The game already has a ton of characters and there's just too much overlap. We already have Zero and the girl and her dog could have easily been filled by Gaige and Deathtrap.
Most likely moxie was supposed to play a smaller role as candy than the story got changed and in a time crunch thay changed her name and used her assets for somthing else we know that happened in the first borderlands with the sirens and it happens all the time in the gaming industry
I’ve always had a fascination with the rats when I played borderlands 2 and wanted to know more about them
''friendly dahl employee'', wasn't tannis originally dahl employee?
Didn't Typhon live in a vault? I think that's plenty reason to wear a hazmat
In regards to the crimson shield any of the helmets outside of the zero looking one look exactly like Helghast armor from killzone
can help dig some lore/history on Pangolin and Anshin please i don't think there going be a ton of lore but there got more to them beside a name?
In regards to the Marcus with an eyepatch time-frame, since it said it would have happened between the first Tales game and Borderlands 3, it would have likely happened in the Commander Lilith DLC. Probably as a part of a side quest.
Considering the time frames of release from 2, Tales, and 3, it would have given the art time enough time to start coming up with new designs for the existing characters.
Love Borderlands! Thank you for sharing some new knowledge.
This was very interesting. This was short, good and something that I needed.
Man I love when you drop a borderland video
well in the Pre-sequel it did explain that Rats was originally mutate Hyperion workers who were left on part of the Helios station that they had to cannibalized to survive, guess Later they escape to Pandora and forming their own community...
Crimson Shield all look really cool, i love their designs
Crimson shield was a faction in the first game. They’re from the DLC either right before or right after the one that introduced Moxxi
I love ur videos u do a excellent commentary and keeps me watching
That was fun man thanks!
While not officially canon the borderlands book, The Fallen, by John Shirley I think is where the Rats come from in chapter 14 we're introduced to rodent like humans that wear gas masks. They were apparently were miners that were attacked by bandits and decided to hide in the mines that they came to work in and didn't come back up and eventually turned into Rats. This book was released in 2011 before BL2 introduced the rats
I like to think Fl4k was originally the Loaderbot from Tales From The Borderlands.
So they cut out all of these interesting characters and concepts...but the calypso twins and Ava made it into the final product...
If you played The Pre-Sequel, then you'd know where the rats came from... I think 🤔 I'm not entirely sure how they got down to Pandora tbh
I'm wondering if you'll ever do Easter eggs and references again, or every Explain the meaning behind more Rwby songs.
With the situation on RWBY and RoosterTeeth as a whole, I'm pretty sure he doesn't want to touch them with a thirty-foot pole
@@ReminiscentIndustries was that a Grinch reference, because if it was then it's supposed to be thirty-nine and a half foot pole.
@@gojirawilson3611 it's not a reference. It's the truth
Honestly I can see gearbox re tool the crimson shield in borderlands 4 it just seems like too good of an idea not to use
Yeah. Might as well save that for a plot that probably would give them the proper introduction.
Could even have them be a part of the war that the watcher talked about in The Pre Sequel.
Plus, it'd be interesting to see where Vladof would be based, as well as possibly have a bit of a funny moment, considering their constant talk of revolutions and preparations for upcoming wars, which could inadvertently made them the most prepared for the war the watcher talked about.
I don’t know if you still do the history of series. But could you cover Incinerator Clayton from BL2?
I love how the Crimson Shield was cut, but the quest 'The Big Succ' stayed in.
Play TPS, do side missions, learn the history of the rats
Great video, love to to all you do
It actually makes a ton of sense for Typhon DeLeon to be wearing a HazMat suit! If you think about it, things like that would be a necessity when working/growing up ON A TURD FARM ON PANDORA!
I still miss Zed also good to see a video from you E
Wait. Are we not gonna talk about how Katagawa is human yet wearing the suit he has only 4 digits on his hands?
Lol I always imagine him cutting off his pinkies right before going into battle to be accurate. Although we’ve never technically seen his body so maybe he has two cybernetic arms
Katagawa's model has five fingers. It's one of the clues he is not zero.
@@MrSailing101 if you watch the video around 1:25. Katagawa goes for a slash but Zer0 stops him. If you see his hands he only has 4
Maybe Typhon wears the suit because he was a turd farmer and needed for that
If the Kandi was her name the first thing that popped in my mind after looking at the artwork was April Bowlby (Kandi) from Two and a Half Men.
So typhon made kids in radioaktiv vault...
Thats why they were sianece twins?
I always thought that Tiny Tina's sleeve was a hint to her growing up to be like a psycho siren or something
Hey so I have had a question burning in my mind. You already did a video on the vault monsters but what’s the deal with the invincible bosses? What’s there stories if they even have one, would be a neat video idea I think.
I am designing concepts too. So as my research and experience I can say that, in the industry, many of the concepts are getting like 70+ iterations, especially the key characters and their equipment, pets etc. So you can be sure in triple-A games most of the time the developers make sure that gamers get the best iteration either from the point of design or contribution to the story. I am in love with the Borderlands series. And creating a project inspired by Borderlands for my portfolio nowadays. It has not been finished yet but It will be at the same quality level as works of Sergi Brosa etc.
I forgot to comment this on your other video about tales from the bordlands 2.but "besides from the art style, it looks like tales from the bordlands 2 was made by different people who have only played talse from the bordlands and nothing else. Like an entirely different game company from an entirely different series".
I mean im mad that rhys’ eye got changed back to blue without any mention of it being the one with Jack in it, but at least they didn’t make it red. Aesthetically it doesn’t work to have a red echo eye
idk if youll ever see this comment but i have a request that could perhaps be interesting to consider! I love borderlands lore, and I pondered on the idea of a lore series in reference to the actual maps within the games? for example, the story behind what happened in caustic caverns and the story of the crystalisks, story of the dahl workers who were abandonned and then killed by the crystalisks when they were seeking revenge after initially being friendly towards humans and trusting. I know its in the game but i love your videos and think each map has a cool little story/added lore that can be explored in video format like how you do it.
either way, great content, seriously keep it up youre one of my favourite creators!
For Typhon, maybe the suit was used to help care for his kids? So they didn’t leech the life out of him by accident? A hazmat suit might have provided protection of some kind.
9:59 I am willing to bet that it was going to be revealed to be him accidentally shooting his eye out.
I don't understand why you don't get the Kandi part. It's literally just her concept name _before_ she was named Mad Moxxi.
Bit late to the party but with Typhons "Hazmat Suit" Could also possibly be related to the whole "Turd Farming" thing?
Kandi might be her birth name or a nickname in her ex-commune since she was from the Hoodunk clan and made herself a huge personality growth. You can see her breaking the character and speaking like a mean villager girl for few seconds in one of the missions but can't recall the game or the specific mission now. Must be BL2 dlc or so.
Personally my favorite semi obscure fact is that Hammerlock & Wainwright hyphenated eachothers surnames. Wainwright "fancies adding Hammerlock to his list of names" (source: GL&T script read). Hammerlock signed Maurice's cast with his new initials (HJ).
I love Fl4k, they are amazing.
that radiation with vaults reminds me, I've always thought that the Warrior and Kraggons might be related
I've always had the thought that Dahl wasn't directly responsible for the crackening, and that it was a failsafe to force people off the moon should they get too close to Eleseer.
@@Aderon not sure what that has to do with what I said
@@SuperSeasonChannel2003 Idk I had the thought that the Kraggons were part of the crackening, I guess?
@@Aderon the lore is that they were able to reach the surface because of the crakening
@@SuperSeasonChannel2003 I get that, it was just that I had thought that the Crackening (and thus the releasing of the Kraggons in the first place) was an intentional plan by the Eridians, rather than with the Kraggons being the natural fauna, along the lines of your observation that there appears to be some link between the kraggons and the Warrior.
I wish we knew more about the mutated bandits and why they are the way they are
Hey EruoptionFang I've been wondering about the old show nomad of nowhere and in my head, you are the rooster teeth guy. Do you know what happened to it, I really loved that show.
I play borderlands 2 for years, heck you can jump in and play with random people and have fun, borderlands 3 was a disappoinment i pass the game in one week and jump to mayhem 10 right away and i can sadly say the game is dead, hard to find people to play co-op with
I had this idea for pretty long time: what if Overwatch and Borderlands had a collaboration? Skinwise I mean but maybe also a new game mode. There could be Siren Mercy skin, Eridian Echo, one of company military skins for Soldier Rhein Reaper Soujourn. Hyperion Bastion and Moira and etc.
One of the crimson shield looks like judge Hightower
So the whole dahl rank think, what happens when a dahl solder get a rank increase? Like private to corporal or something along those lines, do they just basically rip them out and embed new ones?
Fun fact bruv is that in borderlands it’s possible to have mutations like skags depending on what was fes to them at a young age . Like how are the flynnts fire proof ?
They should make the ork race would be cool
Her name was probably meant to be Candy. She could still have been crushing on Baron. It could’ve been that she was supposed to be in the main game but they scrapped her.
If she was talking about Captain, it would still work. She was married to Shank so she has dated bad guys before. She also dated Motor Mama from BL2.
For Flak it could have easily been explained, in borderlands you go to different planets and encounter new enemies. All they would have needed to do was have flak be an orc and build a planet around the orc race
Could you make the hystory of boom the boss and the dj in moxxis bar cus I have a feeling that he has some history
I think other fl4k ork design would of been amazing for wonderlands
I have an idea for a weapon for a future borderlands game it's an Easter egg weapon it's manufactured by mailwan, the gun type is an SMG, the rarity is Orange and it has the ability to switch between all the elements, the gun's name is called Avatar and the red text says "when the world needed him most, he vanished" it's a reference from Avatar The last Airbender.
3:17 i think this was in reference to Zane Flynt, the brother of both Baron and Captian flynt. bit of an obvious thing to overlook ngl.
Markus is the trader "Sidorovich" from s.t.a.l.k.e.r
The Crimson shield should have been implemented, hell if you could play as them thatd be awesome
Isn't rats and PreSequel mutants hyperion soldiers related?
Would have loved to play as a Rat or Rouse. Caustic affinity, speed increase stats, loot perks, etc. Would have been such a fun vault hunter.
V1 Ultrakill type character. I like it
“One of them looks like zero”
*ignores the one that looks exactly like zero and zooms in some other robot face
Can we have a ETA on when you are going to do a Video on the Borderlands Books?
Ever since they were mentioned in New Tales from the Borderlands, I need to know how bad they are.
