- Screen legends Bette Davis and Olivia De Havilland guested together on TV legend Steve Allen's "I've Got A Secret" on March 1st, 1965 to promote their soon-to-be-classic new film, "Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte". In honor of Bette Davis's nationally recognized Centennial, as well as 20th Century Fox Home Video's remastered special edition of "Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte", available everywhere this holiday season, I hope that you will all enjoy this classic piece of 60s TV nostalgia!
In this segment, Steve Allen asks Miss Davis and Miss de Havilland about the film's SEVEN Academy Award nominations before Bette Davis makes one of her rare TV musical performances and SINGS "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte", a song that she had hoped to sing at the Academy Awards herself but which became a Top 10 hit for singer Patti Page.
In honor of 45 years since the release of "HUSH...HUSH, SWEET CHARLOTTE" & commemoration of twenty years since the passing of Miss Bette Davis...
A great actress who can't sing can still be rivetingly effective because the greatness covers everything.

Tommy Walker, I applaud you. I'm 64 and as much as I try to enjoy new talent, It strikes me that there are no longer distinctive talents or faces or appearances. Everyone is generically dull.
Anyone who lived while the greats were great knows that. Mediocrity and worse is the new great.

Her singing the song with the harpsichord was hauntingly in the movie,,, and she presented it again on stage,,, awesome

If you are saying the film version used a celeste, then it could just be a script/production error.

Bette Davis looks lovely!
Though not a gifted singer, she drew me in, as if she felt every bit of Charlotte's tragedy, and her voice sounded kind of childlike. I found this clip appealing and good. Bette could sure get you, couldn't she?
She don't, sing bad. But, she aint the best singer.

When i saw this movie, i couldn`t sleep for days........that`s Bette Davis with her eyes.
I loved this movie and both actresses were magnificent. Agnes Moorhead was finally given a chance to shine as the fine actress that she was. It's still a chilling movie.
eva magnusson Agnes Shined in everything she did. She shined as Endora and in the Shirley Temple Fairytale show and of course one of my favorite old Hollywood films The Bat with Vincent Price
Don't forget she was in Citizen Kane, one of the three best films of all time
and she was amazing in her only Twilight Zone episode. She did not say a word and she was simply amazing.
When Judy Garland, the greatest entertainer of the 20th Century aspired to be as great an actress as Bette Davis, proved that Bette Davis was the greatest actress of all time. Today's hacks cheat their audiences with dull and bad performances.
One of the greatest co star actresses of all time, Agnes Moorehead could do it all, she was extremely talented and a very beautiful woman!!!!!

In the early 60s', my mother bought us a t.v., and it was there I first saw this magnificent woman. I wanted to be her, so, I watched EVERY movie I could find on our T.V. with her. Then, I knew this woman was the ABSOLUTE queen. I began to polish my nails in Revlon "red", I even tried to imitate her speech. But coming from Texas, it wasn't going to happen. There is NO actress EVER who could even be touched by her shadow. She was and remains the Queen of ALL,
PERIOD !!!

She commanded the stage REGARDLESS of her singing voice-and conveyed her immense talent, with emotion, that face, those eyes, and the brilliant way she used all of it to keep us mesmerized!

Bette Davis wasnt a singer but she could sing ans an actress sang and she was good in it.She was in her own show named Bette Davis in person when she sang and tell stories

Bette Davis is the best actress to ever be born with a natural ability to make you feel that you can forget it's just acting. She can draw your whole being. I watched Hus Hush sweet Charlotte when I was very young and it still haunts me after it's over. I know what is going on happen next but don't care. I still wardh it agaig

well for some reason the point comes across . . . the talent for Betty is that she put her heart and soul (not to mention the sincerity that came along with it) into her acting roles. She was truly a dear descent human being.

Ugh, I was so hoping Olivia De Havilland was going to surpass Luise Rainier as the oldest surviving Best Actress Oscar Winner. So close. May she Rest in peace.
After Whatever happened to Baby Jane, they began making Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte. Originally, they
brought in both Baby Jane stars, Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. It became bedlam. Chaos! After awhile,
Joan Crawford was out and they brought in Olivia DeHavilland, who played the part of Miriam masterfully.
Read up on the Bette and Joan mess on Hush, Hush. It is an amazing story. I love the movie and song!!
I imagine Bette wasn't happy the Academy overlooked her. Tough pill to swallow after the months of dealing with Joan Crawford as her co-star particularly all the down time due to Crawford's illness.

Bette is magnificent but so is Olivia De Havilland! What a combo! Agnes Morehead steals the show at times in the movie! Nothing today can compare with these three today or ever again.
Why not?? Her generation loved and respected her. She was more than an actress; she was a descent human being.
A true actress in every aspect. Bette couldn't sing, but I was riveted, awed by her performance singing this song, just as I am watching her movies. No actress does it better than Bette Davis. Loved, loved, loved, her. So sorry she's gone.

Olivia was so cute, she was a lovely woman, died at 104 in 2020, a long life star, she was beautiful even very old. I love then both!

I remember seeing Charlotte and Baby Jane when I was a kid. I was horrified, esp when my dad told me that Davis had been a great femme fatale in her day. Her early films were brilliant. She actually does a pretty fair job with her singing, considering she smoked about a carton a day!

I have never seen this one before. It was wonderful. And nostalgic. Bette Davis was always my favorite actress hands down. You can not compare Bette Davis or any other actress in the 'golden age' with anything out there toda, except Merle Streep.

Olivia was an amazing actress and her portrayal of Melanie Wilkes in GWTW, was so perfect and I don’t think that GWTW would have been as successful if any other actress played her.

her look is very reminiscent of her look in the mid 40's. best look for her, as it makes her look so young.. younger than she looked two years earlier. though, i guess joan took her toll.. luckily she recovered.

My mam loved her, I watched her sing , whatever happened to baby Jane, on the Andy Williams show, brilliant. My aunt tessie sounded exactly like her..ah, God be with the day's.
Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte was great. All older actors from the 30s and 40s, Davis, De Havilland, Moorhead, Cotten and Astor, all chewing up their scenes, (in a good way) The movie is pure camp, but it's a whole lot of fun. Of course Joan Crawford was suppose to play Miriam (De Havilland) but was publicly fired from the film because of frequent "illness" that prevented her from working, thus sending the cost of the film to go through the roof! She apparently told longtime director, friend and sometime lover, Vincent Sherman; I just couldn't do another round with Davis.
She is irresistible. Love her.

I love love love Bette Davis, and I thought her singing this song was awesome. We all know she wasn't a singer, but there's people out there that are way worse.
Definitely better than the version of the song made for Pop radio channels. It had a male vocalist, and was completely nauseating (the backup chorus was particularly saccharine).

This is odd, because Bette (Charlotte) did NOT sing this in the film, but Olivia says she did. I love Bette's (and Olivia's) joy about the Best Supporting Actress nomination received for Agnes Moorehead.

Oh yes she does. You don’t hear the entire song, that would take too long and sidetrack the story.
Fred, the other commenters are correct. Bette did sing the song but she didn't sing it in its entirety. As a matter of fact, this is the first time I've heard the song in its entirety. She was lamenting about her boyfriend, played by Bruce Dern, and the night of his death, which haunted her character all her life.

I say that and I'm a huge Joan Crawford fan. I think Olivia was the perfect choice for this movie, especially since she and Bette actually liked each other and could do their scenes without the animosity so plainly evident in "....Baby Jane".
