  • Der Herr ist mit mir, BuxWV 15
    by Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707)
    Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir
    Ton Koopman, conductor
    Der Herr ist mit mir,
    darum fürchte ich mich nicht,
    was können mir Menschen tun?
    Der Herr ist mit mir,
    mir zu helfen,
und ich will meine Lust sehen an meinen Feinden.
    Alleluia.
    The Lord is on my side;
    I will not fear:
what can man do unto me?
    The Lord taketh my part
    with them that help me:
therefore shall I see my desire upon them that hate me.
    Hallelujah.
    English (Psalm 118, 6-7, KJV)
The Buxtehude project is arguably Koopman's most important achievement: groundbreaking, ear-opening, comprehensive, scholarly, answering questions, raising others. But above all, it sounds like a labour of love.

Buxtehude is a composer who created many very serious works and is therefore not easily accessible to many. But I like his instrumental music as well as his vocal pieces. - Thanks for the music, lyrics and pictures.

Bach was fond of Buxtehude and heard in secret his performances in Arnstadt when Handel played compositions in the presence of Buxtehude as I checked in my Bach's and Mozart's library

Indeed, and can you blame him? I am very fond of Buxtehude's compositions myself. I've previously made videos of his "Jesu, meines Lebens Leben" and "Jesu dulcis memoria."

Esistono ovviamente versioni per cori pletorici, nulla a che vedere con lo splendore delle singoli voci soliste che possiamo ascoltare qui oltre al fatto che ovviamente si sente decisamente piu' puro il suono di violini, violone e basso continuo

Where is the chorus? I only hear soloists... Horrible "nova prattica" that changes chorus for soloists and female voices for males ones. Even the instrumentation is reduced to one instrument per part. A real disgrace!
