  • “Vieni, o figlio” from Handel’s Ottone (HWV 15), 1723
    Ann Hallenberg as Gismonda
    Il pomo d'oro under George Petrou
    This role was written for Margherita Durastanti (active 1700-1734).
    The idea and inspiration for this video was provided by Anita Sikora who has an essay about Margherita Durastanti, this aria, and motherhood that can be found here: baroque35.wordpress.com/2017/...
    Vieni, o figlio, e mi consola,
    che se il viver t’è vietato,
    mori almen in questo sen.
    A penar, non sarò sola
    s’il conceda amica stella,
    perché teco io verrò men.
    Come, my son, and comfort me,
    for if life is denied you,
    at least you may die on my breast.
    I shall not be alone in my suffering
    if a kindly star allows it,
    because I shall die with you.

    Beautiful post, Jeffrey. I would never have thought there were so many heartbreakingly beautiful Handel arias I'd missed, or forgotten. Perhaps I grow more susceptible as I grow older. But this is right up there with Piangero and Lascia Ch'io Pianga. And you're teaching me more about paintings than I ever thought I'd have time to learn.

      @@JeffreyStivers I have been surprised, as well, at the many lyrical perfections in Handel opera arias I’d just utterly missed-either because I never cared to attend the long works, or paid more attention to Romantic and Classical composers.
      In addition to this heartbreaking gem and the famous “Ombra mai fu,“ (whose melody he appropriated), there’s “Verdi prati,” “Lascia ch’io pianga,” “Where’er you walk,” and the haunting “Minuet in G” (for piano transcription).
      It is a fabulous wealth of melodic generativity, really, when these are added to the Royal Fire Works, the Water Music, the Coronation commissions and the Oratorios.

I first discovered this aria many years ago on a recital disc by Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, so this aria has long been a favorite. Only years later would I discover the complete opera, and I agree that it deserves to be better known. It was one of the most popular operas of Handel's career, second only to Rinaldo in the number of performances it received.

    According to the chronicler and diplomat Liutprand of Cremona Gismonda (Real name Willa of Tuscany) was a real baddie having mercilessly bullied Adelaide (who eventually became Holy Roman Empress) when Adelaide was under her power in Pavia,the then capital of Italy.However, in this exquisite aria she comes through as a very caring and solicitous mother with regards to her son Adalberto.I think also that aria "Falsa immagine" provoked the disdain of the singer Francesca Cuzzoni who thought it not good enough for her talents and this instigated Handel to drag her towards the window and threatened to throw her out unless she agreed to sing it!

    • @JeffreyStivers
      @JeffreyStivers  Před 7 lety

      That is true about "Falsa immagine;" Cuzzoni considered it too simple a piece for her debut on the London stage. Ironically, Charles Burney said her singing of that aria "fixed her reputation as an expressive and pathetic singer."

    • @anitasikora4028
      @anitasikora4028 Před 7 lety +1

      There was probably another reason why Cuzzoni didn't want to sing "Falsa immagine", but I won't say too much for now. It is related to this aria's singer Margherita Durastanti, who was at that time Cuzzoni's rival. Things are usually more complicated than in an anecdote.
