    Great tips in using a multitool with depth gauge and the square cutting guide board.

    The one thing I was waiting for you to mention was the different sides to the decking timber. Make sure the timber is replaced the correct way to match the existing timber!

      If u dont know which side is the correct one to match what you're repairing then u probably shouldn't use battery tools either...

    That multi-tool works great and I should probably buy one of those. I will be working on some tongue and groove boards in my laundry area and wasn't sure if I could complete this project myself or would have to hire a flooring guy.

      Actually, I just bought a multi-tool and I really like it, but noticed that the blades can dull pretty fast, so I noticed on another video that the blades can be sharpened with a file prolonging their life.

    Guide block is a good tip so you don't have to look for the line of nails and re-orient yourself. Also good idea to screw the block in place instead of going in at 45 degrees. I wasn't comfortable with doing that either. Think I'll be using that. Great tips! Thanks! :-)

    Nice video but why not seal the two end grains of the replacement board with a product like Anchor Seal to stop splitting and checking before installing it?

    I have to replace a deck board that runs underneath the rail post. I have been wondering about this type of patch. A couple of contractors told me that attaching those additional supports to the joist is not structurally sound and unsafe. Can you expound on this please?

      Hey, you'd be best to head into your local M10 store and have a chat with the knowledgeable team there, they'll be able to help you with any questions and help you find the right products, too. ^Rhi

    From not so suuny and dry England... If you use cross head screws with a Dewalt Impact driver, you can replace the whole piece in 10 mins. This Dewalt will screw a 4" screw, in , . less than 5 secs. Great vids, but USE SCREWS !!!!!!!!

    • @fhiggenbottom
      @fhiggenbottom Před 7 lety +1

      My experience is that the Torx heads of deck screws (even ceramic coated ones) can strip or even have the screws break after years of service in severe weather conditions. That makes replacing damaged deck boards a nightmare (and according to Murphy it will happen). Although deck screws won't easily raise above the deck service like nails do due to the elements deck screws have some real disadvantages. There are trade-offs. But even if the head of galvanized nails fail the nails can still be removed easily if you need to replace a damaged deck board.

      They put deck screws in my deck, they rusted & the heads broke off after 14 years, what a pain to get the board off.

      @@fhiggenbottom Yep, agreed. About to replace some rotten deck boards which were screwed in using stainless steel torx head screws. I know they will be a pain to pull up as the heads aren't always in tip top condition leading to stripping, even with a good impact driver - which means the old angle grinder will need to come out!

      Hi Graham,
      You can replace the whole thing if you like but the general idea with this clip is how you would go about replacing a section.
