  • NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - (Warner Bros. 5817) Out of Los Angeles, this beautifully atmospheric disc by Bonnie was recorded on October 20th, 1965 just three months after recording the Phi-Dan records release, 'Home Of The Brave'. Once thought to have been the work of Phil Spector, this magnificent production as well as 'Home Of The Brave' was the work of Jerry Riopelle. The story goes that supposedly Gold Star Studio engineer Larry Levine, played for Spector, a tape of Riopelle's production of Clydie King's 'The Thrill Is Gone'. Spector was so impressed that he took him under his wing at Philles Records from the summer of 1965 throughout 1966. Lead vocals on 'Home Of The Brave' were once rumored to be that of Miss Veronica Bennett of The Ronettes. The rumor proved to be be false as vocals were handled to perfection by session singer/songwriter, Charlotte O'Hara (Charlotte Ann Matheny) who was christened that name by songwriter Al Hazan and Gold Star engineer Larry Levine for her 1963 Ava Records single, 'What About You'. On both 'Home Of The Brave' and 'Close Your Eyes', lead vocals were by Charlotte with background vocals supplied by Sherlie Matthews and Clydie King while later, Marva Holiday and Nancy Padron performed with Charlotte as the 'touring' Treasures. 'Home Of The Brave' was credited as by Bonnie and The Treasures while the Philles master of 'Close Your Eyes' leased to Warner Bros. records was simply credited to Bonnie.
    The 'Wall Of Sound' never sounded as good as it did on these two Jerry Riopelle produced Bonnie singles. L.A.'s "Wrecking Crew' hammered out the powerfully explosive backing tracks and the deep, rich echo was supplied courtesy of Gold Star's iconic echo chamber.

    Great vocal from Charlotte O'Hara, what a wonderful talent she had. The wall of sound backing makes this a real gem.

    Thanks for love! Original mix of 'I Can Hear Music' by Spector (I think) also sounds like what was to become that sound I mentioned regarding this relevant pop music artifact. I suppose Spector didn't notice that he was onto something new, style-wise, in playbacks. I think other producers noticed something new, making the sound happen a few years later. My opinion.

    Pop tunes of the 60s and early 70s were crafted with passion. Great record. Phil Spector, from a genious producer to a murderer.
    The man behind the wall of sound ended up dying behind prison walls.
    The Wrecking Crew from LA, along with The Swampers from Muscle Shoals are some of the best session players ever.

    Wondered why on the Ronettes version, that the lyric "the magic of love will make your dreams come true" was omitted. Best lyric of the song.

    Love this song. I like the Ronettes version as well, but it's interesting on their version, Spector left off the lyric "the magic of love will make your dreams come true" (which is my favorite line of this song) but the recording is still very good and slow danceable.

    This song's style is about 4 years ahead of its time. I might even suggest that its sound was stolen and used to spin off the final days of the psychedelic era into the early 1970s. It's definitely unique for the time.

    L.A.'s "Wrecking Crew' hammered out the powerfully explosive backing tracks and the deep...Scusate se ho fatto copia-incolla ma la frase esprime al meglio l'esecuzione del brano musicale e della voce graziosa della cantante. P.S. Ascolto la musica creata negli anni 60 e rimango impressionato dalla intensa musicalità che entra nella mia testa ed inoltre ascolto 45 giri che non sono mai stati distribuiti in Italia!!!....grazie

    For quite awhile i thot 'home of the brave' was really the Ronettes - Charlotte (Bonnie) sounds like Ronnie up to a point. At any rate Home of the Brave is a great protest song & was about about dress codes in school. I mean really, girls weren't even allowed to wear pants yet in most schools. As a kid i was sooo glad things were changing in that respect. & long haired boys were laughed at. Things changed very fast afterwards. Kids were actually allowed to look like kids, not 'mini adults'. The mid '60s fashion explosion was the end result. How i loved THAT. Most interesting era. Lots of good songs too. The rest is history. BTW, this song is new to me. It's OK - Home of the Brave is still pretty hard to beat. Have the beat up Phi-Dan single somewhere.

      @AnthonyReichardt  Před rokem +1

      Ronnie actually sang the original version although it was never finished and released. This scratchy acetate was the actual artifact that Charlotte O'Hara used to learn the song which was issued on Phi-Dan as Bonnie and the Treasures.

    @reichardtaj Thanks for the info this may had been the reginal hit single which no doubt got a lot of L.A. play but it must had been a top 50 hit but hey the voice and production was spot on and Jerry did a great job providing the arrangements.

    Anyone have any info?
