  • How to paint watercolor clouds. In this video, I am sharing how I created this sky painting. I find that to paint a dramatic sky with lots of clouds the easiest method is to wet the paper on both sides. This way, the paper stays wet for a really long time and allows you to work on the clouds for at least half-hour. It is very important to use 100% cotton paper. Other kinds of paper will get dry so quickly that you won't have time to do much painting.

Colors used: Hansa Yellow, Quinacridone Siena, Indigo, Cobalt.
I use a variety of watercolor paint brands (Daniel Smith, Holbein, M.Graham, Nevskaya Palitra) but all of them are professional watercolors. I used to buy student-grade paints but now I stay away from them as they contain a lot of additives and little pigment. When painting, I had to apply so much paint just to get any pigment out of them. Professional paints seem to be more economical.
Paper: Arches 100% cotton 140lb cold press. You may use any brand you like but, most importantly, use 100% cotton.
