Minthara is actually evil. Not comedic evil or wacky evil but realistic evil. She is focussed on results. Personal gain, tactical gain, strategic gain, doesn't matter. Everything serves her purpose. Killing the child, for example, achieves nothing but instant gratification. If you teach it to fear and respect you, however, it may become a useful asset. Also, she isn't entirely heartless. She likes children. She just wants them to behave and obey, so they may one day achieve greatness.

I wouldn't say that either of them has little emotion. Minthara is feeling a lot, and confides in you quite a bit regarding her fears and doubts. Which says a LOT about how much she trusts you with her life, given that revealing weakness in her culture can be a death sentence. She tries to keep up a brave front, but any time you pass an insight check and press her about something, she will immediately admit how afraid she is (particularly of Orin), revealing how thin that facade is. She's traumatized, and trying to keep it together until the crisis is over. Laezel is emotionally immature and bratty because Vlaketh has been sabotaging her culture for a millennia, feeding them fantasies and lies to keep them zealously loyal and unquestioning. She'll scold you about being immature, and then immediately act even brattier and be COMPLETELY oblivious to the irony. 😂 SHE thinks of herself as a no-nonsense pragmatist, but her approach is so shortsighted and belligerent that she wouldn't have made it very far without Tav. Depending on your choices, she gradually becomes more mature over the course of the game, probably because (being a pragmatic sort) she realizes that a more balanced approach gets more effective results. I love them both, because they have such interesting character arcs.
If you enjoy this, I highly recommend the old book series “War of the spider queen” (a WotC official series)… The books are available cheap, but audible has it too and the narrator is absolutely fantastic.
Had to look up what a Patriar is, apparently it’s a baldurs gate specific title WOTC created for the setting. Matron as far is I know refers to a high ranking female official, makes sense that she would first have said matrons at first. It’s how drow society would be structured.
Mintara's dialogues are really interesting, she may not be the best moral compass but I can understand what she is trying to say and apply it to contemporary standards that I actually agree with to some extent. To clarify: slavery, mutilation and cannibalism are not contemporary standards, don't get me wrong.
I just love how Minthara seeks the betterment of everything In the worst ways possible. Like she brings a new level of attitude you would get from a Paladin
Minthara's view of the world isn't evil for evil's sake. She's one of the most insightful and pragmatic companions in the game, and also the funniest person my durge knows. Wish she didn't disapprove of acts of kindness and generosity sometimes, but she's smart enough to understand when it is beneficial politically to do things for others. Easily one of the most interesting of the companions, and she's so easily missed by people who do the good playthrough.
