the best way to do treasure maps is half drunk with a group of friends on discord. Nothing about it is overly demanding and there's nothing you can 'ruin' if you mess up the mechanics. But you can still do your entirely weekly gear token grind in in a couple of hours so you don't ever have to choose between this or progressing your character. It's not an either/or proposition, which is great.
it's simple but brilliant from a design philosophy. The whole thing isn't over-designed, it just exists as a way for players to have some fun with other players

there is some misconception out there where some people think that FFXIV didnt had any content so the players leave the game and played another games time to time, like Preach said, its not FFXIV didnt had any content to engage in the game, but the game are designed so people can choose what you want to do or not, there are reward in the games by doing those activities, but if you didnt think you want that specific reward you can skip it, most of the rewards didnt had anything to do with your characters power/progression except leveling your other jobs, so you didnt need to do it over and over again if you dont want to, yeah some people think its not good if they didnt had any short of repeated mechanism in the game to keep people playing the game so you gonna run out of content soon, but from my experience on FFXIV its kinda like win-win situation for me, because of it i can played others games without worry that i gonna fall behind laters,

One of the biggest problems I have with 14 (as a veteran player who considers it their main MMO) is that the devs don't really advertise content. Raids are in the duty finder, that's great, they eventually put gold saucer in the duty finder, that's great. But in order to even know about maps, wonderous tales, custom deliveries, beast tribe quests, and even palace of the dead, you have to go out of your way to find the NPC every time. I would love if the game gave you reminders of these pieces of content, ways to tie them back to the core loop (such as achievement reminders), and just more reasons to do them. The relic weapon is supposed to serve that purpose too, imagine if there was a relic step that needed maps, or items from wonderous tales, suddenly people would be doing them way more (we saw this with PotD, which saw a growth in interest when relic drops were put in there)

    • @muhansen2138
      @muhansen2138 Před 2 lety +1

@@lambdafish291 indeed, FFXIV its not free from problems either, for example some people on my static go on adventure in elder rings/Lost Ark, sometimes they even forget the schedule haha, even in the raids some even forget the boss mechanics maybe because their mind was not into it honestly, so we need to prog step by step again, so its was suck to people who still focus in the game and sometimes, it put them on weird spot, they understand people wish to try the other games, but at the same times those thing happened, so what you said about that problems its kinda true, even in streaming too, after the streamer finish the MSQ, people kinda stop to watch regularly, because the main dish already done, people didnt care much about the dessert/side dish, thats the problem imho, when you make 1 aspect on the game super good, the others content on the game seemed poor in comparisons even you know its not necessesary true.. in FFXIV story super good, but at the same time it overshadow the others things like raid etc to certain extent even on the player bases. so people from the outside think that FFXIV is all about story game where everything else is just relatively so-so.. so im agreed 100% with you, dev team maybe need to think how to promote the others content too so its not fallen behind on people mind..

It's not very often, and not for very long, but sometimes I want to have combat where accidentally pulling more than 1 mob can kill me, and I have to balance consecutive pulls with not dying. Cause why grind and make your entertainment a chore when there's tons of other things you can do that's fun? You could probably come up with multiple answers, but all of them comes down to having fun or more fun later, and why have fun later when you can have fun now and more fun later as well?
Everyone is built differently, there's times that progress is fun or the reward is worth it, but you gotta weight it yourself. Still, I think everyone should value their time cause that'll make developers change their systems more than if you keep on playing it.

Keep in mind too that it's much harder for bots to farm map rewards. This leads to significant difference in market value for these items. A lot of FF's systems make bottong difficult, and as a Crafter/Gatherer "Main" it's pretty obvious what is bottable and what isn't simply by their value over time. It's not JUST fun, it's ALSO good for a stable in-game economy.

For me, it's actually weird hearing that people don't know about treasure maps at least in a general sense because they pop up in various spots throughout the game. Hell, they are a rewards for doing Wondrous Tails! Of course, I feel like MOST PEOPLE hear about treasure maps through their Free Company (Guild) because it's a very common community thing that really helps to bring people together in a fun environment where everyone walks away with something at the end of it. Before Endwalker, my FC would run map runs every Friday night which were so popular some weeks that we actually had to make two separate groups. This along with hitting up all the clubs and bars in the game has died down a little bit recently with the world mostly opening back up but if anyone ever wants to put a run together we keep a scheduling board in our discord where people can sign up. The best thing about treasure maps is that they're always relevant because many of the mats that you can obtain are used to craft items that are used for GLAMOUR which is the true Endgame so whether they're worth a little or a lot of money they are worth something and I've never come away from a full round of treasure maps (which is where everyone brings 2 maps with the general rule being that you role need for your maps and greed for everything else) without making at least 200-300k gil for level 60 maps and 500k plus for level 80 and higher maps.

Torghast sounded awesome, but most of the difficulty comes from unavoidable damage and there isn't near enough variety, so it feels pretty boring after the first few times. Warfronts, so incredibly easy that you had to actively try to lose. Could have been awesome if they were actually difficult/had a pvp mode. My savage team saves up maps and will run a bunch of them from time to time. Part of this is because not everyone likes to farm to work on professions to earn Gil... but they need potions and food to raid. One night of maps will give enough gil to buy all the food and potions for a couple weeks of raiding. We also get the high-end crafting mats that the group crafters want real bad as well. It is a win/win system. There is also quite often a super rare minion or glamor item that can drop from the final boss. The current map tier is the Golden Wings. You can use them in citys as a cosmetic item only or for the fasion event at the Golden Saucer.

  • @TouruZen

I fully agree with Asmon's idea of "Do you want to keep doing the thing after you get the big reward" treasure maps for me are just like that. I don't need gil and there isn't anything I want from them right now but I still love doing them because it is just some quick fun. They are also good for people who don't want to do proffessions to get gil to be able to get consumables instead of having the only way to get them be like "Oh i need to fix up 50 of this rare fish"
FF14 is really good with having multiple ways to get things you want/need. Like just getting gil. You can get it from dungeons rewards. Just putting stuff on your retainer to sell. doing these treasure maps. Framing materials or crafting. You aren't locked into a few dailies or high end crafts to make money in the game and I think that is the hall mark of a good game myself. Having choices on how to complete your goal.

On the topic of farming towards a reward: The systems I've enjoyed most were the ones that allowed you to farm "passively". Simply by playing the game any way you want, you will be able to get rewards that build towards late game goals. Like a certain amount of materials for example. There should be the option to grind the materials as well though! Because as you slowly creep closer towards the goal by playing the game, you might think to yourself "oh I already have over 50% (for example) of the materials! Let's grind out the last bit to get that reward!". Some might grind from the start to get the rewards they want ASAP, others might get it pretty much passively after a long time of playing.

There are different types of players. Collecting materials and skilling is its own player type. Runescape is an example where a large part of the skills is leveled through farming and crafting.
For the people that like combat there is Slayer. Or having a little mix of it you have Dungeoneering.
Everyone has certain content they like or don't like. Trying to cater to all different player types is difficult.
The whole treasure stuff that he does is something I wouldn't care about. If you want to fix the issue of not needing to farm you need to create a system that doesn't require farming.
But for every problem you fix you create a new problem. No farming? well how are you going to balance leveling skills? Distributing materials without needing to farm.
If you look at everything with a min/max perspective then you'll end up doing the same thing over and over because it gives you the best rewards for the thing you're doing.
I'm a skiller, I don't mind doing mindless picking up some materials. But it should be balanced that you don't need to spend hours and hours of picking up materials to progress a skill.
Something like Mining and Smithing, if you need to mine hours and hours to level up once for smithing then it could get boring really quick. You'd have to balance it out somehow by introducing other activities. You could create Minigames or quests. Something limited so it doesn't make the picking up materials obsolete. Everything with balance. And that's a really tough job to get right. Especially if you have a lot of levels to balance. How much time investment is worth how much experience. How to make it all enjoyable by certain player types or for all.

Yes, this is gambling, but it's also the exact type of gambling that's totally acceptable - there's no "buy in" really, if you have a gathering profession done you smack a rock periodically and get your map... You're not buying them off the cash shop or bidding massive sums of currency against bots. Worst case, you buy one from the market board which is more about passive income for gatherers than it is about a "cost" - they're usually like 60-120k gil.
Then you go out and dick around with friends for 3-ish hours and maybe you get something or maybe you lose... nothing? The only thing you're 'wagering' is your time, and if it's fun did you really lose anything?

Really enjoyed doing maps when I played. Wish more games did gathering/crafting the way ff14 does.

Torghast is beyond depressing. I would rather become a serial killer in real life and or start fires or kill puppies as a hobby than deal with anything that has to do with Torghast.

Treasure maps are just powerball lottery. You can get a roulette with 5 stages of gold treasure, you can solo as well but it’s kinda difficult since minimum should be 3 ppl or you would fail after getting to stage 3

I know BDO is infamous with the grinding stuff and combat.
But the lifestyle farming was fun in a relaxing way and my favorite part of the game
(Okay I know even that aspect is p2w as well)

anything that you have to do repeatedly is going to become boring, now they can concentrate on creating farming encounters to keep it fresh or they can concentrate on creating game encounters to keep that fresh, take your pick and remember it takes months for new content to actually come out.
Ideally nothing in the game becomes tedious but that just isn't realistic, whether its farming raid content or farming trade skill stuff, eventually everything is on farm.

For me, it's REAL simple. A good system respects your time, a great system is an enjoyable time, a bad system demands your time.
