  • Asmongold watches a video by WoW veteran Jesse Cox, who breaks down the strengths and weaknesses of the 2 most popular MMOs on the market right now. Jesse has played Final Fantasy 14 for about a year now and in this video he focuses more on what makes the FFXIV game unique compared to World of Warcraft, than just which is the best MMO of the two...
    FFXIV lately has seen a massive resurgence and has been more and more considered the WoW killer, after it was widely reported as the most played MMO on the market...

      @@RagnaroekChaos The difference between the two. My Fiance and I love FF14, and tried WoW for a month. When we started, I was a mage with those tables that give mana cookies or w/e they are. Got into our first dungeon and someone kept telling me to put down the table, (which isn't what the skills is called) kept insulting me because I had no idea what he was talking about until the tank whispered me the actual name of the skill. The difference is one game the community will most likely try to help you learn, where the other one will get angry at you for not knowing anything. Yes every game has toxic people in it, just matters how toxic and where the toxicity is. In WoW it feels everywhere, in FF14 it feels mostly just in the high tier raiding.

      @@KhronosTrigger The big reason everyone in WoW expects most people to know what they are doing is that it's been around since 2004 and has the most " How to" videos on CZcams. The absolute best way to avoid most toxicity is to always announce at the start of each dungeon that you are fresh and learning. That's being considerate and polite to others time. Gives them the opportunity to either leave group or stay and help you. After you do that you have no fault whatsoever. You did announce it instead of just expecting people to just teach you after making mistakes and them already expecting you to know what to do.

    I honestly never even realized how rude most MMO players are until I played FF14. I remember when my wife started playing and decided to main white mage. It was her first MMO and there were multiple times I was in a dungeon with her and was like "look babe u need to heal the tank or people are going to leave." To my surprise, instead of yelling at her or getting frustrated with her, the other members of the party helped her by recommending skills and explaining different boss mechanics.
    There are a number of reason I stopped playing FF14 but the community was definitely not one of them

      When I started FFXIV, I was actually too scared to play healer or tank because what if I miss a spell or drop aggro and we wipe, people are going to rage at me, call me all sorts of things, wish my family dead, tell me to uninstall the game or kill myself, relentlessly harass me in PMs or mass report me, etc. All because my previous awful experiences from other MMOs (which shall not be named). I mean, I'm a veteran gamer, this kinda stuff doesn't get to me, but it still feels bad when it happens. To my utter surprise, the exact opposite happened in FFXIV. Other players not only did not rage at me even once, but they were *nice* and helpful. I honestly couldn't believe it. I wasn't massively shit on when I asked noob questions in chat, but people were tripping over each other to explain stuff or give links to resources I can learn more. When I first wiped with a party, I fully expected the usual blame game to start, people to hurl expletives and accusations. Instead, they were like "well, that just happened. How about we try it like this" and we went again, and again, until we succeeded. That does not mean people don't get exasperated or lose their shit from time to time, but they don't rage at _you_, they rage at the situation, like "damit I've done this a million times, how is this not working" and we find what the issue is and work around it.
      It's just such a nice change of pace, that all that fear, anxiety and performance pressure is just not there in FFXIV. That even if you screw up, it's not the end of the world. That you can ask stupid questions in main chat and instead of elitist snark and dogpiling you get a real answer. Sure, it's not always rainbow wonderland, there _are_ assholes in every game and your mileage may vary, but for the vast majority of my time in FFXIV it was a remarkably relaxing and fun experience *because* of the community and not despite of, like in other MMOs.

    Personally, I’m in the same camp that I don’t really care for stories that “kiss your ass” at every juncture, but mostly I believe what soured that behavior for me slightly was actually WoW. I really hated the idea of having these titles thrust upon me when I felt as though I’ve done literally nothing to earn/deserve them, but this is where this shifts slightly for me when I play FFXIV. In WoW you’re basically at the sidelines in terms of the story while Tyrande, Thrall, Jaina, etc are at the forefront fighting the important battles, are the middle of the important interactions so on and so forth. It makes me feel bittersweet when I’m give these titles for basically no tangible effort. My biggest gripe with this practice was Legion. It really bugged getting called these very prestigious titles like Archmage, Archdruid, Highlord, Deathlord, etc on what feels like a side character. On the flip side in FFXIV your character is present in 90% of the cutscenes and even fighting from time to time you aren’t some side character you are the MC and whenever you are present and taking part in these important/climactic/flashy battles it feels a lot more satisfying and feels more like you’ve earned your title rather than getting it for free. This is even more reinforced by the fact that there is no need for alts with the job system. These facts make your singular character that much more prodigious/special feeling. Maybe others disagree, but that’s how I’ve always felt about it.

    Toxicity in FFXIV as I have experienced it, though, is a lot more serious than some of the degeneracy I've seen in WoW, as an example my friend was the victim of a guy displaying stalker-like behaviour, following her around all the time /slapping her on sight. An isolated example but not an uncommon escalation in terms of emotional severity. And lets not forget assholes in random dungeons do exist.

    • @Ashtari
      @Ashtari Před 3 lety +9

      Exactly, you can very much tell someone they're doing a mechanic wrong or using the wrong rotation. It just matters HOW you tell them. If your criticism is surrounded by expletives and demands that the player kill themselves for doing so badly, then YES you will get banned and you WILL have deserved it.
      I've played ARR from beta and I've used the kick function a handful of times only once or twice it was because someone was being a complete asshole about something, mostly it was because someone dc'd mid dungeon and it had been 10 minutes.

      Yeah, for me the toxicity in the game came more from fc drama. The kind of things that could happen in any online space where you can create groups. It had nothing to do with the game but there where consequences in the game.
      When I encountered toxicity in dungeons/raids, it was either really passive agressive (not listening to advice on purpose, refusing to do anything, rushing through things...) or people quitting after the first wipe in clear/farm parties

    Something that kinda bothers me about the story in WoW is how disconnected your character feels.
    It feels more like you're just a random dude following Jaina and Thrall around and they only acknowledge your existence by calling you '' Champion ''.
    in FFXIV you're legit actual friends with the other characters and the characters still act regardless of whether they're with you or not, when they're off screen they've still done things that matter when you meet up again and it makes them feel alive.
    And it feels like all of you are together part of the actual story and matter.
    In WoW it feels like your character is a deus ex machina that just comes in to kill things to solve all problems but then the story characters are the only ones that matter in the story and your character may as well not exist in the cutscenes at all.

Now it being 2021, that number has since grown." Note, it's not about which songs are better in which game, but rather just to give scale to the sheer amount and variety of music in ffxiv. Doesn't necessarily mean ffxiv's music is better because there's more of it, just to be clear. But you're bound to find at least a handful of music you'll like in ffxiv just because of the variety. Ofc, WoW also has a bunch of music that's great, just not as varied. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it is a notable difference.

    Some music is themed on the bosses origins. Suzaku for example is a very Asian theme, Lakshmi has Hindi themes where it originates from India.

But some of the music isn't my taste, and some of the music just doesn't stick for me. That's every FF game though, in my personal taste; I mostly just care for the rockin' battle and boss themes.

    The part where he's talking about negative feedback, of course there is, just not in the way he's thinking. For most, the negative feedback in WoW is something along the lines of people discouraging you from playing because they all think you suck when in reality you're new. In FF14 and i can personally atest to this, the negative feedback comes in the form of instructions from more experienced players. I remember we were doing one of the first dungeons, Tam-Tam, and I was a tank. We wiped because the healer died because i wasn't protecting her. When we came back, the healer gave me instructions, hold X enmity while the DPSer's hit otherwise the boss targets the healer and can kill them quite easily. So i stuck with the old, Heavy Weapons Guy strategy by being the biggest nuisance ever to the mobs and guess what? It worked. Healer lived, DPS took out the minions and then we beat the boss. I got a shiny new axe from it and then from then on i knew how to tank for low level dungeons up to The Manner anyways

    @MarioLuigi0404 Před 2 lety +3

    I think that point about “the story of WoW was what YOU the player made it” is really exemplary of a common difference in design philosophy between western and Japanese RPGs.
    WRPGs tend to be more open and less focused on a main, linear narrative. They tend to allow you to decide your own role in the world - a lot of them have different factions to side with, good/evil reputation systems, more open stat building systems, different dialogue options that actually change stuff later on, etc. The choices you make often dictate how the story plays out - at least to some extent - and the games tend to be more focused on allowing you to go wherever you want and do whatever you want. They’ll often encourage playing through multiple times to experience all possible paths the story can follow or try out different character builds. But because they’re so open and free, the writers can’t be certain about what the player character is like because every playthrough will be different. This means they need to make story scenarios that are open ended enough to make sense in any given playthrough.
    JRPGs, on the other hand, tend to have more linear, fleshed out stories and characters. Your role as the hero is often decided for you, and the games usually take you from point a to point b with the only non-linearity coming from optional content. The protagonists of JRPGs are more likely to have their own personalities, desires, and goals when compared to WRPG protags whose personalities are often determined by whatever dialogue option the player picks. (Silent protagonists are the usual choice when going for a player insert - though they’re still rarely given the same player agency as a WRPG protag is.) Having the story follow one single path and having the protagonist have a prewritten arc can allow for stronger storytelling and better characters development because it doesn’t need to account for the player choosing to follow a different path. The trade off, of course, is limited player agency and replay value.
    TL;DR WRPGs are usually designed around player agency and freedom. You decide what your role in the world is. Meanwhile, JRPGs are usually designed around the storyline and characters. The story dictates your role in the world.

    There is no feeling of forced positivity on ffxiv. The reason toxicity in ffxiv is less prevalent isn't because of the threat of a ban, its because that's how the community is, and people adapt to those around them. Going into ffxiv you will subconsciously become less toxic over time just for being in the game. Informational videos overemphasize the ban of toxic people to the point where we can't blame anyone for thinking the devs hold ban hammers above everyones heads, ready to strike anyone with toxic behavior. It was a really big slug, and I was tanking it but I was going to need potions, and then a lancer appeared, and he starting attacking and it went faster. The slug divides into smaller and then smaller slugs, so We continued hunting until I realized I could use the area attack to tank them and then they would not attack the lancer. And if the lancer is alive, the fight gets easier.
    It was really wonderful and powerful moment, so after the fight we became friends. I never had such powerful moments in wow, where people would center on pointing out that I should have been tanking everything from the beginning, instead of noticing how I was learning to tank at that moment.

    • @joshuakim5240
      @joshuakim5240 Před 3 lety +12

      The core reason for this is because of how WoW's actual gameplay goes; you can't really play in a way that capitalized individual skill over stats since you can't do many different kinds of different combat options outside of right click attack move and select a skill. There isn't gameplay like timed dodging, blocking, countering, or spells that emulate these (there's super defense, invulnerability, and evasion buffs, but you're not doing the actual controlled action of performing these).
      As such, the only way to make the game more challenging is to just power creep. The gameplay is too simple to allow for sideways power dynamics, or making things more difficult because they work/fight differently despite being at a similar or same power level. Take Monster Hunter for example; one of the most difficult monsters in the franchise according to the fanbase on average is a mid-low tiered monster called Barioth. Stat-wise it's not strong, but its really difficult because it's super fast and aggressive to the point where its lowish stats don't matter in comparison. The final bosses in every single Souls game, despite having the highest stats, are considered to be some of the easiest because they're simpler than previous weaker bosses that are considered much harder. Almost everyone agrees that in Dark Souls 3, Pontiff Sulyvahn, a midgame boss, is way harder than Soul of Cinder, the final boss who refills his hp bar the first time you empty it.
      WoW...is physically incapable of emulating non-stat oriented challenge in its gameplay for this reason. Not for the lack of trying (many attempts have been made), but because without a complete overhaul on how every aspect of combat works, the game is too much of a "having bigger number wins" game.

You aren't in cutscenes, you aren't mentioned in the story at all. That's why I love final fantasy 14s story. You do matter. And that's something I look for in RPGs and mmos

    “controllers OMEGALUL” Was exactly what i thought when my friends tried to get me to play ffxiv on a playstation, now i honestly love some of the insane hand gymnastics i have to do just to use one skill. Mastering a class on a controller feels very good, its pretty much just like finally learning all the combos in a fighting game.

      It's also about accessability. I know it's a very small minority, but for example, there's a speedrunner called halfcoordinated. he does not have coordination in his right hand, he can't grip with it. he speedruns with a controller and his left hand (only uses his right had to stabilize the controller) he's amazing, but is a game is k+m only he can't play it.
      I never understand people making fun of/ being mad about MORE OPTIONS. Somehow, having to make desicions for yourself is too much for some people

      FFXIV is one of those weird exceptions where I can only play with controller and I enjoy the hell out of it, and this is coming from a kb+m user through and through.

      The hard fact is some of the best players I've ever seen play the game on controller. This isn't an FPS where you lose massive advantages of twitch reactions with a mouse, it's about knowledge and practice.

      Yeah same, I’ve been playing on controller ever since I switched mid-heavensward and haven’t looked back. It was just natural because of the convenience and the fact that I’m more of a console gamer at heart. I only really avoided it because players in the NN kept saying it was awful to use vs mouse and keyboard until I gave it a shot. I mean it takes a lot of practice to get the muscle memory and hand dexterity down, but once that’s mastered I’d argue it’s better than mouse and keyboard in almost every regard. The only real negative I can say about it is it’s some people would rather cut out the middle man with convoluted modifier inputs and the tab targeting can be janky at times vs clicking things directly, but different strokes.

    The positivity in the community noes NOT have very much to do with whether or not it's EZ to get in trouble. I promise you, as someone who HAS been that kind of super toxic person in WoW, there's just a world of difference when you're playing a game you truly enjoy. If I'm in a good mood because the game is fun, I'm much more receptive to helping out newer players. Take that idea and spread it across millions of players and years of stellar performance and you get the friendliest MMO community currently on the market.

      Yup, it's odd how majority of MMO's don't have nearly the same toxicity as WoW whilst not being that different, certainly not different in difficulty. You can argue back and forth if FF14 or WoW is more difficult, I'd say they're more on the same but still very different in how the battles are make up. Only major difference is lack of dungeon difficulty which I wish they'd dig into more like M+, although that may be difficult given the bosses in dungeons are a dance rather than reactionary, so ramping up the damage and such won't change anything.

      @@prinstyrio0 I'm actually glad FF doesnt have a M+ equivalent. M+ is just boring to me because its generally the laziest form of difficulty increase, which is just numbers. A very large portion of M+ is just gear checks, and doesn't actually become skill based until pushing past +15's where decision making, preparedness with items, and CD usage is more important.
      I'd totally be down for a hard difficulty of the dungeon content with extra mechanics or something, but no just boring number increases.

      Thing is, I feel like people are just more understanding on FFXIV and I attribute that to the fact that the majority of people you'll find on the duty finder are people going through their MSQ and that just really wanna get it done for the story, or vets who are there for mentor rewards, or to farm some glamour or mount, or stuff for relic weapons, etc. If the party wipes, usually what I see is that people will say "welp, wtf happened" and that's the most negative they'll be, you'll usually try again and hopefully get it right on the second or third attempt. In WoW, I have a friend who received death threats because he fucked up in a lvl 40 RDF dungeon. Needless to say, took him years to even consider touching an MMO again.

      The thing is blizzard makes you farm like it's a job so you enjoy the rewards but not the game. That's why you get very irritable. If you had to farm relic weapons to do the highest difficulty in ff14 there would be more toxicity in the game

    Roulettes are a MASSIVE part of why final fantasy newbies get treated so well. In order to do your weeklies (for exp at least) the game MAKES you run the risk of playing the FIRST dungeon, but rewards you handsomely for it, AND gives you a bonus for doing it with a new player. So veteran gets big bonus, and newbie gets a vet who knows what theyre doing, forcing that interaction from a design standpoint… its pretty great.
