    In the ending, when he look at the dog he understands that they didn't eat him as others do to survive. So he understands they have heart and compassion for others and he can live with them. That's the big lesson his father gave him, recognize good people from bad people

    • @OrthodoxChristianWife
      @OrthodoxChristianWife Před 6 lety +99

      Ralpha Recycled I saw it as a rememberence and validation/encouragement of when they were in the bunker. The boy heard to dog. The Father got worried and they left. In a way it's the same idea as yours, just a little deeper as they said they had been following him and his father for some time. That showed the boy that actually he can trust his instincts. Not only because his discernment was correct about dog but also about the little boy he saw, who appeared "About your age, maybe a bit older" and the father thought he was seeing things. So much in it. Such a well thought out movie.

      @BarbarossaSC2 Před 6 lety +146

      You forgot about the thumbs. When they come to the boy they're missing their thumbs. They never explain why in the movie or book, but I believe it signifies "loss of humanity". Opposable thumbs are a human trait that enables us to handle tools, be dexterous, fire a gun, etc. I believe the movie used this to tell us who were the cannibals. When cannibals are caught or it is known they eat human flesh, their thumbs are cut off as a means to warn others of their crime. So in the end, the cruel irony is that the man was right-they were being followed. The man's ultimate fear of being stalked and caught off guard, perhaps even this is the driving factor that amplifies his paranoia and resolve. But he was right, they were being followed and even though the son has the gun, the fire, the power, he doesn't have what it takes. He never quite understood because he is the boy, and his father was the man. He gives in to death because he doesn't understand that death can have a kind face, like that of his mother. He never saw it. He didn't see her kill herself. That's why the ending is a sad one. The father gets his son to the end of the road, quite literally.
      So a logical question: Why did they follow the father and son? Why not team up or help each other? Because only the wolves can sniff out other wolves. Cue the dog. To a boy a dog is something cute, fuzzy and affectionate. To a man a dog is a symbol of loyalty, protection and companionship. But the man understands that the dog is still a beast, and a tool.
      TL;DR - They're going to eat the boy. :/

      You are right about the thumbs. You tell who the good guys are by who still has them. The old man and the ambusher have them. The cannibals, the thief, and the family at the end do not.
      They were following them. Showing up at the bunker and later at the Mans old home. Then finally the mans greatest fear, that his son will trust the wrong person.

    God damn this movie is so bleak and heartfelt. The Man just wants his son to be able to live as long as possible, but still be a 'human'. Unwilling to eat the flesh of other men, but willing to kill a man just to let them live another day. The first lesson he teaches his own boy is how to kill himself. That spells out the whole movie right there. Live and fight. And if you have to die, do it yourself.
    That part in the flashback where the wife says she should've killed herself long ago when they had more bullets (and even blamed the Man for using their third bullet to prevent her from committing suicide) is so tragic, because I know if she stuck around and it came to it, the Man would've used the two bullets on her and their boy and then suffered the consequences himself. That devotion to others wellbeing..
    She says, "I don't just want to survive [I want to live]", but in order to live, first you must survive. You survive, then you get to live.
    Overall, it's morality that makes you like and feel for the Man and by extension, the Boy. "There is cannibalism. Cannibalism is the great fear", you can live by eating another man, but that is not living that is only surviving. This movie is so jam-packed full of morality and lessons in 'what is humanity' that it's almost hard to watch. I really wanna check out the book because of this film.
    "Whoever made humanity will find no humanity here"

    I just finished the book and honestly the Road is one of the most inspiring books I’ve ever read. The idea that in full view of such a horrible world a father is still willing to give his last trying to set up his son for the future really hits me. In the ending scene in particular: the man who confronts the kid gives him two options: either come with us, or stay here with your dead father.
      Like what would the latter do for you? Just sit there in sorrow and do nothing else? There’s truly no redemption in this movie, no hope for a better life. Humanity is surviving on borrowed time.

The basic needs industries need to atleast come up with precautionary protection systems incase of a true catastrophic event like this. The food industry has GMOs (which are wonderful works of technology), that can help us grow food faster and with better quality. What we need to do is design one with resilience to harsh climate, such as the event seen in the movie: mass plight.

    I've been trying to figure out what the cataclysm is in this movie and I have finally come to the conclusion that it was from a serious nuclear war because they all have radiation sickness and Robert Duvall says he could see this coming a long time ago and Viggo said he saw a bright flash of light coming down from the sky cyndrillical light followed by low concussion sounds the damage everywhere could not have been from a volcano the ash could be from all the fires and impact shock waves could have caused long lasting earthquakes maybe ? It just seems to me it was a nuclear war and radiation sickness and all the damage was done by the explosions from the nukes and the after fires and quakes could have been caused by nukes maybe ? It just doesn't seem like a supervolcano or asteroid or anything else because everyone has or seems to have radiation sickness and the trees and all the animals have died supervolcanoes and asteroids wouldn't cause all the animals to die or radiation sickness !!! By the way they should have stayed in that underground shelter with all the food they had warmth and shelter and food and drink and a place to take showers and safety and shelter !!! Why leave there that was kinda dumb plus I would have let the black guy keep his clothes and shoes and Gave him some food and then left that was kind of harsh leaving that guy with absolutely nothing !!! Plus they left that poor old guy alone (Robert Duvall) that was kinda harsh to !!! But anyway I'm thinking that was either a serious nuclear war or massive asteroid /meteor/ comet ??? Supervolcano like Yellowstone I don't think it would do all that but I guess I could be wrong I suppose ???

      From what I heard, the author intentionally made it vague, less is more etc, but with so many theories flying around he said he liked the idea of the asteroids the most - I believe it's the most likely since it does the same devastation except no radiation - radiation sickness would also involve ( prepare yourself) diarrhea - but it's talked about being only coughing up blood - I for sure recommend reading the book it's beautiful

With slow starvation mechanics that Aug your stats and atrophy your muscles body, Water would be most important. Also animals cause you'd need somthing, the road had none they all dies so no birds would drive you insane. Oh and a sanity function cause if your alone by yourself surviving for Years you are going to have a screw loose, same in reverse with cabin fever if your safe and fed you'd go stir crazy couped up doing very little in a Bunker or cabin.
      Starting skills with a slim chance you'll survive long enough to get materials to use it or do very basic plans since the skill had been unused for such a long time.

    So, this is my theory of what caused the "cataclysmic event". I believe it was the result of a supervolcano, perhaps the eruption of the one in Yellowstone Natl' Park (notice how nearly everything is coated in dust). Also, notice how the father says "the world is growing colder", and never in this movie do you see the sun. This is probably the result of the ash blocking the sun's rays, plunging the world into a sort of nuclear winter. Although you would see similar results with a nuclear war, I do not believe this is the case since you never hear any of the characters mention of radiation or fallout.
    Note: This is only a THEORY of mine, so don't take it seriously.

      Just my opinion, but I don't think it's supposed to be anything that specific. The entire work is more concerned with theme than narrative so it doesn't really matter how and the situation contains a disparate mix of elements rather than trying to depict any one real doomsday scenario.

While the credits roll, you can hear birds chirping, people conversing, running water, basically meant life which could suggest that the couple was in fact good and they might have had a safe haven of some sort for long term survival. The ending was truly a happy ending imo buuuut that said, the women, the man with shotgun shells, and the thief all had no thumbs... so idk lol

    After the fires in Maui this book/ movie took on such an appreciative tone and reemerges as a valuable life lesson after hearing what happened to a lot of those people. Some of those people left their homes in order to survive, some didn't have the time they thought they would and succumbed to the dangers of the natural disaster, and finally there were the looters and the ones breaking into homes, holding people at gunpoint in order to steal supplies. I watched a video of a local from Lahaina telling the world through her phone that news was misreporting and leaving out the most important details regarding the tragedy. She spoke of snorkeling tours that had to be cancelled on account of the large amount of bodies floating in and around the areas closest to the coasts. Finally, there was a news article discussing a 14 year old boy who was found burned to death while holding his dog. I still can not believe this is going on and in the same breath the news will speak of vacationing tourists who were attempting to sue venues in Maui for canceling their wedding plans. These natural disasters are only good for showcasing the greatest people in the face of tragedy alongside the very worst and this book does an impeccable job showing the distinction between the two.

      @@col.greasebagmcqueen9933 I think they took that part out, because it doesn't really make any sense. How is that army feeding itself? They boy and his father are starving the whole time. Even if they are eating other humans, there aren't enough humans to nourish all of them.

    My opinion only, but I think this is one of the best films ever made. Not just because of the content, but because it is some of the best acting out there. All the people responsible for this film did a fantastic job and it came out to be an inspiring film.

      In the realm of my world this was mirrored as divorce, when my wife no longer wanted that life. She could not sustain and went her own way. Yeah that certainly got to me on deeper levels.

    I liked how nature died with man/civilization. In a lot of post apocalyptic films, it’s painted as “nature fighting back”, but in here, whatever caused the apocalypse(likely an asteroid) just did away with both man and nature, reducing them to nothing but dry, lifeless shells of their former selves.

    Such a beautiful book. Yes it is very dark but there is such illumination in the relationship between the father and son.

    The whole book is about faith and god. The father believes in god and that it is duty from God to protect the child. In the book he calls it "carrying the fire" throughout the book he teaches his son to persist against all obstacles and against all odds even if it doesn't make rational sense. It's his faith in a higher power that keeps them from succombing into cannabalism or suicide. Basically the book makes a case for someone to remain faithful and believe in a higher power and that there is true non objective good in the world even in the face of immeasurable evil and suffering. Also to accept the duty to pass that knowledge down to the next generation. The road itself is a metaphor for life, with all the pain and suffering found in a regular life but amplified by 100
