My name is Matthew and I live in a van. I lost my job due to "cut backs" from the pandemic of 2020 and decided to seriously restructure my life. I am also a single dad who needed to find a solution that would allow me to remain in my daughter's life and plan for her future. After tons of research into #vanlife, I knew it was for me.
From March 2021 until October 2021 I spent my days building out my Chevrolet Express 2500, which came to be known as "Lucky" and as of October 18, 2021 I have been living in Lucky full time.
The build was done with almost no experience on my end and I used the one incredible tool I had at my disposal - the internet - to learn what I needed to build Lucky into a very comfortable tiny home.
I have always had a bit of a passion for being in front of the camera and really enjoy capturing the world around us. This really played into how I was feeling after almost a year of working from home when I "commuted" from the bedroom to the couch. I was starting to feel extremely unhealthy, unmotivated and despondent. I HATED that, and that's not a word I like to throw around. This new lifestyle gives me opportunities I just didn't have before and I am so excited to be able to share it all with you.
I truly believe we all have the capabilities to turn our lives around, should we choose to do so - and if I can inspire you to shoot for something better then I have done a decent job and that will keep me going.
There is more to life than the consume, consume, spend, spend lifestyle I feel we have all been conditioned to follow and I just want to do the best I can for myself first and foremost. Our time is limited and I do not want to waste another second on a lifestyle that doesn't bring me joy!

Unfortunately for her Matt is not that into her it. It doesn't matter how much free labor she gives and takes care of him... she's wasting her time with him but that's her problem
I have to say. I hated to see you in so much pain but Im so glad you included us with your trip back home. Amber truly is an amazing friend. You are so lucky to have her in your life.

K.... for anyone staying in a hotel postoperative. Definitely call the hotel. Ask for the manager on duty MOD or front desk manager. Explain your situation and that you'd like to check in early. We will definitely make accommodations for you. Our hotel had lots of patients undergoing chemo treatment amd Ronald McDonald house overflow. This was a mission of our GM. The advantage is they will check in on you to make sure you are okay. Nothing worse than needing to go back to the hospital and you are on your own. ❤
Ps..... pick up a used adjustable cane from the thrift store. This we'll help you balance while walking and spare your hips. Plus getting up and down from the bed and potty you have something to hold on to. I always recommended this for our postoperative back, hip and knee patients.
Yes, and when we had a couple of trips / surgeries, the hotels also gave us a medical discount.

Motels and hotels near hospitals are used to having post op patients staying after surgery and are very accommodating. They put me right across from the ice machine which was so great. Don't suffer needlessly. And do lie down as much as you can. Sending healing prayers your way.
Or an adjustable walker. I was cringing watching him try to walk without something.🤦🏻♀️

I have a roommate who had her lower back fused. When I told her about your surgery, she totally understood your post-op pain. She said to hang in there. Your pain will diminish and you’ll feel much better and stronger.
It’s the WORST!! I’ve had two children and nothing can compare to the pain of back surgery!! I’m so surprised he’s able to be up and walking so much. 😳 I had a two level fusion with a laminectomy. The surgery was 10 hours long! This is so amazing to see.. very happy happy for him that he’s not suffering too much…. 🩵

Matt, I had hip replacement surgery and after dealing with the post op recovery, was and am so glad to no longer be living off pain meds. Pain drains. It literally drains the life force out of you. Glad you made it through the surgery. And glad you had Amber to help get through it all.

Thanks for sharing your experience. It's a tough time but you still put in the effort to share your experience with us. It sucks that the narcotics don't work for you. I know what that's like, I had a pain with no relief, we tried everything for a couple of months. Eventually a related surgery made that pain go away. The doctor never did get to the bottom of the source of that pain or how to fix it but I'm just glad it's gone.
Hoping that your pains go away soon or that you find a painkiller that works for you.

Were just happy youre ok and on the other side of the surgery. Im so glad that you have other people praying along with me for a good surgery and now we have the post op recovery prayers for a speedy recovery! That trip back to Calgary must have been hellish. It’s terrible that you couldn’t take any painkillers. Hope things are getting better. Dilaudid was my go to drug for my two knee surgeries.

I had back surgery and I feel for you. You are moving great for post op. After my first back surgery, I ended up in a condolences home for a month and then needed help at home.
My second back surgery, I stayed home for weeks.

Get some relief ,use ice, wrap it up in a towel and lay it on your back. My daughter had 2 360 back surgeries , the worse kind a person can have . Dr gave her a machine you put water and ice in it then pads go on the back. Really helped her with the pain

Glad to see you are getting around and getting to vent some of your pain. Happy little coincidence was watching Joseph from Sharing The Wild earlier today and a video from just short of 2 Years ago... He went to the Hot Springs and got a coffee in Nakusp from a really nice guy. Just made me think of your brother and that we have not seen him in a bit. Take care!

I'm the same, my past cocaine addiction screwed me on any possible relief by opioids ever again, my only relief I've been able to find is in cbd. Hope you find some relief.

I'm actually allergic to narcotics, they don't do anything for my pain and then I get the added bonus of a chemical allergy that makes me psychotic! JOY!
I hope your pain didn't last too long. I know fighting with pain meds that don't do anything only make it feel like it takes so much longer to feel better.
