U.S. Army Captain Roger H.C. Donlon is the first person to receive the Medal of Honor in the Vietnam War, as well as the first member of the United States Army Special Forces to be so honored - for his actions of July 6, 1964 near Nam Dong, Republic of Vietnam. Captain Donlon was a member of DETACHMENT A-726, 7TH SPECIAL FORCES GROUP (AIRBORNE), 1ST SPECIAL FORCES.
On July 6, 1964, Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Regular forces attempted to destroy the Special Forces camp at Nam Dong in South Vietnam. A large enemy force struck the camp at 0226 hrs - a well coordinated attack from both inside and outside the compound. This effort nearly succeeded in destroying the camp.
Captain Donlon dispatched the three VC sappers attempting to breach the main gate. 1st Lieutenant Jay Olejniczak returning fire and Sergeant Mike Disser firing illumination and explosive mortar rounds on the enemy. Master Sergeant Pop Alamo leaned next to the bunker, wounded badly in the fighting. The fighting at Nam Dong would ebb and flow over a five hour period with the Special Forces Team retaining control of the camp.

Especially today, Anzac Day, 25 April, we remember Warrant Officer Kevin Conway, Australian Army, a member of the Special Forces team at Nam Dong, killed in action on 6 July 1964.

The US person at 10:05 is exactly what I would have expected, although they were outnumbered in a camp that was not very well prepared by the locals. I admire his attitude and would like to think I would do the same in his situation.

Too bad that you couldn't hear half of what he said.

Please remember that this is very old audio/video, but there is nothing that you can't hear.

Let’s see, who should have died in prison. Hmm LBJ, McNamara. I serve in Vietnam for 18 months. So I can say this.
