Maybe not all Urgent Cares are like that but the one I’m at in Maryland definitely is! We are there 12 hours and expected not to sit down and eat/decompress. We close at 830 and if someone walks in at 829 we are expected to still see them. Which I find ridiculous because that would mean leaving no earlier than 9. We are expected not to turn anyone away even when it’s not feasible we can help them. I mean we literally had a GSW check himself out of a Trauma Hospital AMA and come there asking for an antibiotic. The office manager told front desk to register him because we can’t turn anyone away. RIDICULOUS. Thankfully the owner was called and agreed he shouldn’t have been registered but he was already triaged so I’m sure they will bill his insurance still. And I NEVER got my DOT and I’ve been here 2.5 years now. I refuse unless they pay for it and give me a nice raise bc it’s more work. Sorry I’m rambling thanks for sharing your experience. And we also do Preop physical and majority of them have chronic health issues they lie about and are mad when you won’t sign off for them to proceed when the lab work tells on them. I mean wanting a BBL and Hba1c is 11 like get serious!!! Rant over!
Rant on, I feel your pain! I did finally get my DOT but I got it later than I was supposed to and I was never reimbursed for it, but I knew they probably was never gonna do it bc I delayed getting it. I wish you all the best
I was unemployed for three months last year for my mental health. I prayed to God to show me where I was needed. I started hospice in Jan this year and love it!!

Urgent care is a sweat shop. No lunch breaks. Squeezing everything out of you to make a dollar. Unsafe to see so many pts with 1 provider. I’m getting ready to resign and will NEVER do this type of work again! I never worked so hard in my life

Thank you so for sharing. I work as an NP solo in a busy urgent care. I see 50+ patients a day and have reached a breaking point. Management came and spiked to me about a negative google review because the patient complained that “I didn’t order antibiotics” well the patient didn’t need antibiotics. Patients think they can go into urgent cares and tell the provider what antibiotics they want ordered when they don’t need antibiotics and then write a bad review…..It’s frustrating 😢
First of all! You are the provider and the person with the license and responsibility for everything from customer service to the care delivered. You run the show, not the prissy, low wage receptionist, that likes to gossip and tattle to the managing physician and HR. I quit because of the charting off the clock.

I wish there were more people like you who stand up for themselves and do not let broken systems mix healthcare professionals with the dirt. I am working as a nurse and I am so sad to realize that the healthcare field has lost the respect and care for people that do their best to help society. I’ve worked in UC for the past 5 years and everything you’re saying is so true! After 3yrs I cut back to per diem and only pick up when I feel like it, when there’s another clinician working and making twice as much as I was before 😊

Currently working at an urgent care and my experience is basically the same, what I will never do is see 70 pts on my own, no ma’am. And I tell them I am going to eat and pee. You cannot pour from an empty cup. I have realized that most of these institutions do not care about anything other than making their money. NP’s are exploited, but I’m not with it!

I remember one shift during COVID we were testing outside. It was in the 90’s hot AF and I asked for water and the manager said she used up the budget for snacks for that month. I left and went to the store to get myself water so I could be hydrated during my shift. Needless to say, I quit.
Naw sometimes you have to speak up in healthcare because ppl will continue to try you. You were frustrated and that’s okay, it’s normal.

Urgent care would be my last choice of places to work because the patient is NOT always right. I’m not about that life. Thank you for your insight. And yes I still have a house phone. I thought that was my phone ☎️ was ringing 😂
I work in the ER and it’s the same crap! We do get a decent break (after the nursing strike we had) but the volume of patients is ridiculous and we don’t do diversions like other ERs. We pile up the patients and half of them could have gone to urgent care for these minor issues. So now we have to play concierge server while actually trying to save people’s lives who have a TRUE emergency…. THEN there’s no space to get the crash carts in anywhere. Healthcare has truly changed. 😢
Loved this and the honesty. Healthcare has definitely changed from what it used to be. My semester of nursing school just ended and I had only one semester to go (supposed to graduate December 2023) I decided I was done. I will not be returning due to a lot of reasons the main one being I wasn’t passionate about it anymore. It felt like a burden to continue. With that being said I’m headed to get my Masters in Health Administration and hoping to make a huge difference for all and I’ve honestly have not felt this much relief or happiness since before nursing school. Keep doing you love your channel and your message! 💖
Do not diminish your light for anyone. Find your tribe. Healthcare do ask for a lot without adequate tools to excel at the job. And on top of it gaslighted you for speaking the truth. I worked in a doc office, 10 providers, I forgot how many nurses and 2 front desk staff (one was me). We had an emergency where we had to call an ambulance for a parent who was having a seizure...well this person in the waiting room, sees the EMTs walking in clearly there is something going on....they come to the front desk yelling about how they need to be seen and this is ridiculous and how much time is being wasted (mind you its for a physical for the kid). I kindly turned my back and told my co-worker to close the window.

Wow. The part where you talk about that feeling you get of not wanting to go into work- I felt that! I just stumbled upon your channel and it was a sign from god. I am currently going through a bit of an existential crisis. Feeling so unhappy at work (stepdown nights). I think it’s time to move on but I’m not enthusiastic about anything out there. Making the leap is hard.

Honestly I thought that would have been a good setting for me as a FNP as well for work life balance but I don’t do well in high stress areas. Thank you for sharing. I work for a primary care office. FQHC and it’s the same exact story. It’s sad that healthcare is becoming such a mess. Patients are so entitled. No respect for staff. Always understaffed but yet we keep taking new patients
I had a interview for a FQHC and I told a friend of mine who told me not to accept the job bc she had clinical there as a NP, and it as a disaster. Idk what we are gonna do. All the best to you!

As a patient, I went to an urgent care that had a similar problem. Their x-ray machine was down, so they let me know and referred me to another urgent care. I am glad they did not leave me hanging ❤. I went down the road to the next one and had the x-ray done. I am happy we have Urgent Care facilities, however, people need to behave. Patients should not be acting crazy and abusing staff. There is no accountability for bad behavior. Maybe if they lived somewhere that did not have these facilities, they would appreciate them more😥.

Thank you for sharing Laurie! I appreciate your transparency. I thought I wanted to do urgent care, but ugh yeah no. I work in primary care, I get off on time, I have 1 hr for lunch, off all holidays, no weekends, I rarely take work home. No one is calling me after hours. I think I ll stay here, because what you experienced is a disaster. Listening to your story had ME upset for you 😐. I would have quit as well. I work in a FQHC. They have their own set of problems, but it's bearable. I'm happy you're doing what's best for you.
Keep in mind that every urgent care different. The urgent care that I work at does not open during holidays and I never take my work home. We also have a scribe to help us with charting and there is so much support that I never feel alone. I have such a great experience in Urgent Care.
Also, why is it just the health care profession that is expected to work 12 hours without a eating??? This makes me so mad! 😠
What gets me even worse is when your shift is 8 1/2 hours or 12 1/2 hours, with an unpaid 1/2hr for the lunch you never get to take.
Laurie, thank you for making these videos! I’m half way done with my FNP program and don’t really know what I want to do. I currently work at a family medicine clinic, so I’ll most likely start there, but I’ve seen how difficult being a PCP is. On my good days, I’m reminded how much I want to serve underserved populations/minorities and then on other days, my mind gets the best of me and I decide not to do primary care. I pray constantly for God’s guidance, so I know in the end, no matter where I end up, it’ll be meant to be. Thanks for the great video and insights! ❤

The only way to get peace is to leave this profession of nursing altogether. I only have an ADN and not motivated to get higher degree in the field when seeing things like this happening to people at the top of our profession. Also be careful of butt kissers in the workplace…..they are the worst people to work with. You were set up all along.

This hit home so much!! I refused to change an abx for a demanding patient who was also curing at me over the phone. Culture said she was on a good abx. She kept saying how she googled and talked to other doctors so I am wrong and rude. I told her I went to school for many years to provide good care. Next day manager comes in saying pt told her I said I was superior to her bc of my degree. Manager said I should’ve changed the medicine to make things easier. I feel like no one had my back

Best wishes wherever your career path takes you. I called out for the first time in 8 years as a bedside nurse on the same unit my husband did not think I was going to do it. I’ve had difficult shifts but I’ve never left a shift feeling so defeated , abused ,ran over should I keep going. Keep us posted. I Always watch your videos keep them coming. I absolutely agree what you have said about the dealing with difficult patients and the verbal abuse we may have received as healthcare workers. I am not going to bend backwards to please these patients and lose my dignity and self-respect. I don’t want to explain myself to the management about one bad review out of the hundreds of good ones. I also don’t want to hear “what could you have done better to improve the situation?” even I have tried my best to provide care. That why so many of us suffer from compassion fatigue. Patients are not always right and some of them are miserable and crazy. They shift their angers or blames onto healthcare workers and providers. Be nice to them cause they are trying their best.

Laurie, I'm so sorry you had a bad experience. Our Urgent Care providers only see about 25 patients in a 12 hour shift. If the clinic volumes are higher, more providers are staffed. Our clinics that see 100+ patients/day will staff 4 providers and multiple RNs. A PA or NP would NEVER work alone. Clinics will always get negative reviews, but our clinics get way more positive reviews than negative reviews. Radiologists not reading X-rays is simply *RIDICULOUS* . I'm so glad you got out of there. Did you create your own incident report? Also, I can't believe you were doing all of those work comp and physicals with only one provider present. That is NOT OK!

I have been fighting a charge from urgent care over a test they never did because their equipment were broken. This is a real issue! They know their stuff is not working rather then save people time, they prefer to put profits over people.

I can relate to your personality lol I am very similar. I initially watched your week 1 vlog in UC and you already were not into it The LORD blessed you with discernment, don't doubt the wisdom given. I am not surprised it ended like this. These corporate structures can care less about patient safety, patient care, and provider health/joy. That is why it's so important during the interviews to ask what their culture is like, what they consider important, how they support their employees, and what sort of things are implemented to help increase joy in the workplace. I used to be scared to ask questions like that, but now I am not because I don't want to burn myself out anymore and endure painful situations in vain. The executives running these places only focus on the money and making sure that the insurance card is charged. As a provider, we have a heart and we care, and we don't want to give subpar care, it will just erode our character. Those who have not sold their souls cannot function in these types of places. Find a place that is God-centered, focused on integrity, and actually helping folks, or open your own place. Good luck and God bless!!

My first urgent care experience was terrible. And it was honestly the medical director. I’ll never work at a private urgent care practice again, especially a fee for service practice.
I have never worked for a private one! But honestly all these UC are the same!

You were put in an very stressful situation, unable to care for your basic needs and the needs of your patients, then punished for speaking up. It is all the same in healthcare anymore, same management "tricks". You have to not care to function in these environments. It comes from the top, it is only about the money and a false image.
How about trying health care administration? You could make a big difference for a lot of people. I know it sounds "distasteful" , even to me to suggest that. But I have to say that caring administrators are what all the good places I worked for have had in common. Please take care of yourself, and they did not deserve you. 💕
Laurie, I appreciate your transparency and honesty so much! My goal is to become a family nurse practitioner but my ultimate goal is becoming a Dermatology Nurse Practitioner. Currently, I work as a medical assistant and I was working in urgent care. I tried so hard to be positive and like it. But I absolutely hated urgent care. I thought it was just me. So far I worked urgent care for 2 months and I honestly felt the same way you felt!💯 It honestly took a toll on my mental health!💯 I always felt bad for the nurse practitioner because they always left them by themselves to take so many patients.

It was definitely time to go. How do they expect you to diagnose a fracture without an xray? Your right it makes no sense lol. Also it seems like the people your working with is against you and not for you. The situation wasn't safe especially by yourself and epic being down. Maybe that was your push to go, there is something better out there for you.

Being honest with patients about the x-ray equipment not working properly was the best solution because their time is valuable. But the real deal breaker is a grown man that reports everything to HR. The type of urgent care that you work for our patient Mills. They are owned by multiple investors so hence there’s a big push to make more bang then for an ordinary hospital based urgent care. I work for one of these facilities and lasted only for six months, mind you I have 25 years of experience. When you have the front desk person, who is also your medical assistant, you’ll never run on time, go to the bathroom, or eat a meal. It’s completely abusive.
24 to 25 patients is more than enough and a 12 hour day. When you said that you saw 70 patients, I would’ve turned around and left that same day. They do not care about retention . You’re putting your license at risk. The one thing that I don’t like about urgent care is that people think that you’re a vending machine. They want what they want. They do not care about your medical expertise.

I worked in a walk in primary care and it was a similar experience with seeing 50-70 patients alone on some days. That is too much to ask from any provider. I finally got out of that clinic after 5 years and I'm much less stressed at my new position. Good for you that you stuck up for yourself and got out of there!

Omg! You’re making me nervous. I’ve been receiving constant emails for urgent care opportunities but have not responded because of the rapid pace and other unknown factors.
Currently working as an NP in behavioral health. I can begin documenting on my phone after I see a patient and come home review/add changes and lock my notes. I see like 30-35 ppd.
I do looking at the pt entire wellbeing anything medical I observe I collaborate with medical/ nursing immediately but Urgent care is everything
I worked in Urgent care for several years. When I was a newer NP, I really loved it bc it was part of the ER and I liked the action. I also learned so much and gained a lot of confidence. I started not liking it when sicker patients were being triaged to urgent care and there was a culture where you got almost bullied and looked down on if you felt the patient needed to be bounced to the ER. It started making me very nervous and I kept feeling that something really bad was going to happen, so I left. It’s funny, I’m starting a job Monday in post acute care/ nursing home. The company that I will be working for seems really great and the facility seems pretty good as well, so we shall see. I’ve been an NP for 30 years, so I’ve worked many places. If I ever get a minute, I post a list from best to worst

Working in an urgent care setting is sooo exhausting. When I was working at an urgent care type place it was me and one provider. No support staff at all. Provider assessed patients and I did everything else including processing rapid labs and doing phlebotomy.
Omg when I see a person on the schedule saying they having cold symptoms I lose my mind I’m over swabbing peoples noses that shyt takes more time than anything

That is exactly why I left bedside & decide not to finish my FNP. I have my Masters, I make the same money as an FNP without that bull💩. I have many FNP friends in different specialties who say the same story!!!!! Nope!! No amount of money or clout is worth my mental health.

I remember your videos about high pt volumes they asking unsafe workflows. You had to be beyond exhausted. They were literally trying to work you to death. Glad you left. Most pts are a POA and I am in administration. Those surveys are crazy and not realistic because making them are not working face to face with them in hell. I could have slap the tell out of them. That's what I could have done😂😂😂

This needs to be viral. The healthcare system is broken and because of profit they expect us to behave like robots. Urgent care is a no for me. Plus I think there is too much liability because of the same reasons you shared. All the best on your next job.

I once had a theory that if you are assertive & speak up in healthcare, you will have problems in your career for years. Most of the time, I see a lot of dysfunctional & toxic behaviors in most healthcare settings, which doesn't work for me. I don't work fulltime in any setting anymore due to burn out, stress, toxic & hostile environments.

I worked in a prison and it was the best Np job I’ve ever had .
I've been rounding in nursing homes with wound care since November - mentally I can't anymore. Our elderly parent's and grandparents do not deserve this. it's getting to me. I did urgent care during clinical, for 6 months - and nope, thats just not for me. Healthcare is about money making, not people saving anymore. I'm like you, I can't take people's abuse to get you a 5 star, and I can't not speak up with what I am seeing with our elderly population. Good Lord, if people even knew what went on in these places. Also, where I live it's over populated with NP's so I have no idea what to do next. If I could do this all over, this career path would not be it.
This was one of my biggest issue in the nursing home with how the patients were treated, a complete and utter MESS! Best of luck to you on your journey.

I currently work in urgent care and I can tell you that seeing 70 something patients by yourself is insane, absolutely exhausting, and honestly that should be way more than enough to get a second provider, and it's crazy how your medical director was telling you to basically address the problem with the X-ray machine, that's not your job! You're not an X-ray tech! It's your job to see the patients but not fix the X-ray machine! That's just so ridiculous, if anything it's HIS and the office managers job to address that problem as quickly as possible because I also feel like you can't properly see patients who need an X-ray without a working X-ray machine, also with epic going down just sucks, you're right no one likes downtime like absolutely no one and having to hand write everything then back chart everything in the system once it's back up and running, it sounds like they didn't give you enough support at all and didn't respect your or other providers time. I think it's good you left. My current UC I'm at we don't see as many patients but I do feel that they also don't support us enough in certain areas and management is not good so I plan on hopping to a different UC soon, so glad you got out of there!
