Not at all? Squat is the natural resting position for most cultures around the world. Its a question of balance and flexibility and almost nothing else. If you cant squat, its not necessary to live in the modern world, but good god it is comfortable.
Excellent points regarding biomechanics. Even the photo of the baby you chose readily makes apparent the differences in how the various torques are balanced due to differences in center of mass, and center of gravity compared to adults.
I Remember someone say "look at how babies pick up things from the floor. Conventional. Sumo is not natural" Like its the funniest shit that he says that with full conviction
use it or lose it. i had to stretch 1-2 hrs daily for the past 10 months (still doing it) to rehabilitate a decent amount of mobility in my kinetic chain to get a deep squat. make sure you are relaxing your jaw (but keep your mouth closed) and do a chin tuck while going down, you don't want your head going forward and back becoming rounded. think about biomechanics and levers, the distribution of forces in your body. go as far as you can go with proper form, feet should be around shoulder width apart, maybe a little wider, but nothing too drastic (not a sumo squat). extending your arms out while going down helps. make sure to look forward
As a doctor i say you are correct..as a bodybuilder i say again you are correct because we tend to produce more muscle on the lower body which will change the depth and width (thid is for people who religiously lift)
Bone structure does effect biomechanics, and babies do have hilariously big noggins, but I've never met a person with good flexibility in their hips and ankles who had problems sitting comfortably in a deep squat. I'm not saying they don't exist, some people have very unusual bones, but an overwhelming majority of the time the issue is flexibility, and usually either the hips or the ankles or both are the culprit when it comes to squatting.
Its all about hip placement, mobility and location. Then comes muscle function. Also losing a gut significantly helps lol. Im greatful i can do a primal sitting position its quite comfortable and gives a really deep stretch to lower back.
This is why I wear a Medieval jousting helmet when I squat, perfect counterbalance. The restricted breathing from the vents also imitates a respirator training device, so it kills two birds with one stone.
It’s well known in art, and biology, that children’s features are disproportionate compared to an adult. But I never thought of it in terms of mechanics!
I grew up using squat toilet (we still have that at home) and used to think doing that is as easy as sitting crossed legged.. so I was surprised when I learned many people can't do that easily...
Babies also don’t have kneecaps btw. They have cartilage there that starts developing into bone between the ages of 2 to 6 years old and continues until around the ages of 10 to 12. That’s why young children are so flexible and able to crawl on their knees like that. They squat so much better than adults because they’re working with completely different equipment. It’s really not a fair comparison.

This! The problem isn't the head, it is that most ppl have their muscles and tendons shortened and tight from all the sitting on chairs all day. If they practiced deep squat at least a few minutes a day, maybe some light stretching, the squats in the gym wouldn't be hard at all (form wise)
Comprehension skills is apparently a thing that you lack in India.
Yeah, i have a squatting toilet in my home since i was little, so deep squatting is just an everyday thing
My ankle mobility is terrible, I've been trying to improve but i'm so stiff ! If i squat deep, my heels go up, and if i lower my heels, my butt goes UP ☠️
Folks in more preindustrialized parts of the world have a natural deep squat from doing it a lot. We sit in chairs a lot and that changes our body structure accordingly

If a person practiced deep squats for like 15 minutes a day, they'd be doing them rather comfortably within a week. This isn't some olympic feat haha

If you never stop squatting from a baby, you will always squat 'like a baby'. What this guy is missing is that the 'stopping' part takes away the ability you had and would have kept if you never stopped at all
Agree, I work with alot of Asians, they're all sitting around at lunch in this position, working on the floor in the squat etc , because they did this all their life and their parents and grandparents are still sitting in that squat. So... Yea, I think if we westerners also continued to sit in the squat, we'd have the same mobility.
And actually, I have been working on this position for a long time now and my heels are nearly,,,,, nearly touching the floor.. it takes a lot of time to recover this mobility that we "lost".
Bro go to some parts of Asia, you'll see adults sit like that naturally and comfortably for hours. It's insane. Even Africa

Just because you can’t do it doesn’t t mean it isn’t perfectly natural for many people. I can deep squat for hours, in perfect comfort, while I paint, think, type, garden, or whatever. The reason I can do it so easily is perhaps because I do it so often, or maybe I do it so often because it’s such an easy and natural position, idk. And this is true for millions of people. Interesting theory, but the first girl got into the position better than a baby.
Your femurs shift to be more of a shallow angle too as the body adapts to standing up and supporting loads. There are a lot of hip, low back, and knee problems with ballerina and gymnasts who are made to do box splits from the time they are young because it prevents the hips and femurs from developing as they age.
Yes, babies are flexible and have different body ratio to grown up, but also their spine structue is different.
It is like a C, and later when they grow, it develop to be like a S
So I agree, comparing grown to babies, is a bit out of place, when we have many differenes, not to say grown people cannot be flexible or improve their squats

As a species we have been squatting longer than chairs have been around. It’s one of our natural resting positions and it helps with the ligaments in our knees to be flexible
As someone with a masters degree in exercise and sport science, this is essentially a fun fact.
If you use this as an excuse for your squat form being bad in any way, then you are just making excuses.
When I worked with basketball athletes, they often are so tall and with such long limbs that proper squats feel weird and “unsafe” to lots of them. With enough cues and time to let their body adjust, they all are fully capable of learning the movement.

Just hear me out... maybe it's got to do with the "every day" thing? He never said deep squatting is impossible as an adult, he gave the whole explanation while in a deep squat. It's just that it requires more strength and balance, hence practice, as an adult because of a different body composition. If your culture includes you deep squatting regularly from early on, guess what that is... practice.

Excellent points regarding biomechanics. Even the photo of the baby you chose readily makes apparent the differences in how the various torques are balanced due to differences in center of mass, and center of gravity compared to adults.
Also, their joints, such as the acetabulum, have not completely formed and therefore allow much more mobility at the hip.
I Remember someone say "look at how babies pick up things from the floor. Conventional. Sumo is not natural"
Like its the funniest shit that he says that with full conviction
That’s why we put a barbell on our upper half😂 my man just said a lot, for no reason. 😂
we're designed to take a dump in that position. 😂
use it or lose it. i had to stretch 1-2 hrs daily for the past 10 months (still doing it) to rehabilitate a decent amount of mobility in my kinetic chain to get a deep squat. make sure you are relaxing your jaw (but keep your mouth closed) and do a chin tuck while going down, you don't want your head going forward and back becoming rounded. think about biomechanics and levers, the distribution of forces in your body. go as far as you can go with proper form, feet should be around shoulder width apart, maybe a little wider, but nothing too drastic (not a sumo squat). extending your arms out while going down helps. make sure to look forward
I see he knows a lot about kids...
Just looked at my kid. . .
"Sup with that melon bro?" 😂😂
Ive been trying to humble my nephew for months, thank you!
The scene of 5 muscular dudes extremely seriously listening to him talking about babies having stumpy legs is hilarious.
This is why I wear a Medieval jousting helmet when I squat, perfect counterbalance. The restricted breathing from the vents also imitates a respirator training device, so it kills two birds with one stone.
Lol...tell that to all the Asian elders in my family 😂 and i do it too😮
This is true, I had a big ass head growing up…
If someone says «we are meant to be x» without backing it up with rigorous science and sociological empirics - take it with a grain of salt.
It’s well known in art, and biology, that children’s features are disproportionate compared to an adult. But I never thought of it in terms of mechanics!
When I was 5, I could easily put my feet behind my head.
Not so now at 30, lol.
This was very validating. Thank you
People who live in more primal conditions still squat like this while relaxing
Thank you for this... I've been hearing for years about how adults should be squatting all over the place
it's funny how we can find excuses for anything that we don't excel in...
The first girl going into squat was so fluid. Do your mobility and stretching. Improved range of motion will follow.
I grew up using squat toilet (we still have that at home) and used to think doing that is as easy as sitting crossed legged.. so I was surprised when I learned many people can't do that easily...
That position is so unbelievably comfortable.
Omg, this is THE MOST important information before starting squats ❤❤❤❤
I pride myself in squatting like a baby....wait a minute that doesn't sound right.
I don't know. That baby description could also be me. 😂
As a baby, I confirm what he just said.
