  • Microsoft's Xbox Business update podcast has disproved a lot of the rumors that were going around about Starfield and Indiana Jones going to PS5. However, they also confirmed a lot of my suspicions about their plans.

      @@FANTAVISION Note that for Playstation 60% of their exclusive purchases, by volume, are physical sales. I imagine (but haven't verified) that Nintendo is the same. Game Pass seems to have degraded the physical games market for XBOX. If not that then something else, perhaps the Series S being 80% of the "Series" sales, and it doesn't have a disc drive. If you just think about the markets that XBOX has classically done well in (USA, UK), they have fairly good broadband market penetration, despite horrible geographic monopolies (in the US, at least). Nintendo and Sony both sell a significant amount of software to areas of the world where digital games are harder to buy and download. Nintendo and Sony will be hard-pressed by investors, who require growth every single year and will not abide regional excisions, to increase their penetration of markets with less access to broadband internet, not reduce it. Physical media for games will continue for a good long while. Just not on XBOX, where retailers are already removing their section from stores.

    To a degree, exclusives are anti-consumer. However, exclusives have motivated companies to make some amazing games that may not have existed, or had the same quality, if they weren't needed as a "system-seller."

    • @FANTAVISION
      @FANTAVISION  Před 6 měsíci +2

      True, but in the future when there are none, they'll want to make an amazing game to get as many players as possible. Many game developers have that mindset already, thankfully.

    Exclusives are not anti-consumer. Exclusives generally have higher budgets, more polish, and less bugs at launch because they are designed to sell you a system. The systems being sold are much cheaper than anything you could buy at cost on the open market. You can't buy an equally-powered PC or any other equally-powered device for the cost of a Playstation, XBOX, or Switch. These companies leverage economies of scale to reduce prices for the consumer, and also usually sell systems at a loss to get the consumer into their ecosystem. What is the end result? The vast majority of games sold are third party; they're on every system that can run them. Console exclusives allow these more cost-effective systems to exist at all, and those systems offer you a cheaper price to enter the market for the vast majority of games you're going to buy.

  • @knleonhart
    @knleonhart Před 6 měsíci +2

    Exclusives are good because large investments are made in singular projects to bolster an ecosystem. The only $300+ million dollar game on PC is Star Citizen/Squadron 42 and that is an anomaly, built off of a 30+ year old legacy from Wing Commander and Freelancer. Everyone that played those games is old enough to be a whale for it.
    Yes, the $300 million dollar game has become unsustainable and yes, the bigger companies are creatively bankrupt. But, without platform exclusivity, you wouldn’t see 2 publishers like Sony and Square coming together to make a game like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. An open world game that has 7+ playable characters each with their own stories and abilities. A game with extensive gameplay systems that tie together and interact with the world. A game that has a seamless world with a variety of ecosystems and cultures. And a game that contains what seems to be about 20 other games within it.
    Try to find that kind of motive, risk, and ambition taken without the two kinds of need the came together to see its creation.

      @@FANTAVISIONSquare isn’t in a place to take a risk like that. They took huge hits on the Marvel brand and had to sell their Western branch to make ends meet. They needed Sony to shoulder the dev costs and probably needed a bunch of support as well. We learned that outside teams were hired to work on parts of FF16 and this is a substantially larger game than that. In essence, FF7R wouldn’t contain the same amount of content at the same level of quality if they had gone the route you suggest. Maybe they could have made it work by ruining it with micro-transactions. But instead we are getting a game with 400 new music tracks for $70.

      @@FANTAVISION It's pretty clear to me that the output of major third party publishers has swung incredibly far to the live service / microtransactions side of the market. If not for Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft, where are the great single player and co-op experiences coming from? Sure, there are a few outliers each year that get GOTY consideration (Alan Wake, Baldur's Gate this year), but would that really continue at the same rate if not for the first parties? I'm not so sure.
      Edit: I recognize that Sony has made a recent emphasis on live service games, but if we really look at it closely, they haven't really had any multiplayer games of note for a long time. A few generations, at least. I think they're addressing softness in their catalog more than shifting their catalog. All of their major studios still have prestige single-player games in the works.

      @@archaen2321 yeah, most of the games that show up in the major award categories at the game awards have at least marketing deals with the big three. Their impact on the industry can’t be understated. And although I’m pretty anti-corporate.. the most important thing at the end of the day is the quality of the games, not the PR and consumerism around them. As long as we still get games worth celebrating, we can keep the hope alive. It’s not a fairytale ! It was a fairytale until the steam deck was released at a $400 price point! Sony PlayStation can no longer afford to keep their games fully console exclusive! They just told you all this ! If anything, in the next 5 years, PC will now get EVERY GAME day 1! There will be no avoiding PC! It’s up to Nintendo and Sony to for the “console” side of exclusives, but PC will get games upon release!
    I doubt Sony keeps the PlayStation brand much longer! Sony is getting squeezed out the market ! Sony will sell the PlayStation brand to either Apple, meta, Amazon, Google or Tencent! Sony PlayStation won the “home console” era, the stand NO CHANCE in the Server Wars era! Want proof? Sony fanatics are celebrating Helldivers 2 , hell divers 2 is on PC where 90% of gaming PCs are Microsoft Windows based and hell divers itself is hosted on Microsoft’s Azure servers😂 Microsoft is running a monopoly but folks from the console era are still counting console sales! There’s a reason Jim Ryan and the FTC were fighting soo hard to keep that ABK deal away from Microsoft !
    PlayStation PC isn’t just for fun, it’s for survival but it’s too late!
    Playstion PC depends on Steam for store front!
    PlayStation depends on Amazon servers for multiplayer
    PlayStation depends on Microsoft for cloud services! Sony is literally LEAKING money left and right! That’s why the COO Said what he said! Sony will HAVE TO sell.
    We’ve seen this in history. Sony Walkman was the standard of portable audio FOR DECADES until MP3 happened then iPod happens and the Walkman was no more! Sony DVD&Bluray were the STANDARD for video UNTIL Video streaming came, then Netflix came and erased that tech……..
    Sony is at that same exact part of the timeline with PlayStation! It’s over!
    Sony’s ONLY HOPE to keep PlayStation would be to call up rockstar and ask them “how much to have gta 6 as a console exclusive for 2 years?”! Pay WHATEVER they ask for or else….. close up shop!

Of course not just you but every other person that got it wrong is doing this double down BS. The doomers and Ponies were all saying Starfield and Indy were going to PS5 WRONG. You all said Game Pass was dead. WRONG. You all say Xbox was giving upon hardware. WRONG. Take the fricken L without having to qualify it with "I was wrong but....." anything said before the word BUT doesn't mean anything
    You show a clip Phil saying how in 5-10 years exclusives are going to be LESS important and you turn that into XBOX is no longer making exclusives. Yes they are and even in 5-10 years they are going to be FEWER not non-existent. And even if they did go away in 5 years it's 5 fricken years. Who cares about 5 years from now? Also what exclusives does Sony have coming out in 2024? NONE. And from here on out it's maybe 1-2 a year. So no they aren't important. Also the new PS CEO clearly mention going multiplat AGGRESSIVELY. So I'm not sure who you are claiming how "soon" MS is not having exclusives and Sony is.
    Between XBOX doom and gloomers being 100% wrong and yet claiming you weren't and Sony Ponies totally mispresenting what was said and STILL want to claim Starfield and Indy are coming to PlayStation. OK sure in 2-3 years. Enjoy them in late 2026 or some time in 2027. 10th Gen will be out in 2027 you really think there will be a 11th gen in 2034? If you think a PS7 is going to exist you're naïve. The money being invest in consoles can be better used for making game. MS and Sony don't make money on console hardware. Now controllers sure and those can still be made and sold
    All this elitism xbox fanboys have in the statement "What's the point of owning an xbox then if the games are everywhere" guess what it's NOT important. How many Series consoles are there 25 mil at most? How many gaming PCs are there? How many phones are there? How many Switches how many PS5s? Who comes in last in this group? MS bought ABK for KING, CoD was just a bonus. You guys like to dismiss casual mobile games. Those are the ones that bring in the most money and cost the least to develop.
