  • Oh this is a fun customer complaint on his 2015 Ford F150 EcoBoost:
"My battery is DEAD in the morning...only after driving in the RAIN!"
    WHAT??
I can't recreate the problem, but there are some interesting codes stored:
    P0620 Generator Control Circuit
    P065B Generator A Control Circuit Range/Performance
Let's do some research on what might cause this weird intermittent battery drain in the rain...

Totally agree with the U-TUBE videos; being a mechanic from the now "dinosaur" days, getting to replace the cabin air filter on my 2006 Subaru Outback would have been VERY lengthy if not for someone posting a video(very few nuts, but lots of "snap-in" fasteners that aren't readily visible)

An interesting observation, pre repair, charge voltage 15.1V. Post repair 14.4. The 15.1V was a big red flag, talk about toasting the battery. :)

Its pretty common for newer cars to boost the voltage up to 15v occasionally as part of their smart charging strategy, I believe that the scanner said the desired voltage was about right.

My go to on a situation like this is to split an old radiator hose and use a foot or two piece of hose to slip all this harness in and keep it shielded over brackets like this and bending around corners, etc.. and Then I'll tape that shut. I've never had to go back on a repair like that again. Being shielded inside a thick rubber hose tends to keep wires safe for the life of the car-- even around hot exhaust. I make sure you tape it up well so it doesn't let water in.

Since you already have a business license to do car repairs, and you are very close to neighbors, you should be able to get a zoning variance to enlarge your garage area. If you are not adding more impervious area (asphalt or concrete parking) you should be okay to ask for a zoning variance. It would help if you get your nearest neighbors to provide a letter or sign the variance application saying that they do not have an issue with what you want to do.

Yes , there's less overheads involved running a workshop that size by yourself.
The employer who I worked for 20 years ago converted his old dairy shed into a workshop where he could rewind & overhaul electric motors which worked out well because he was working for himself.
He's was an electrical fitter/mechanic by trade whose now retired & he was making more money out of doing that & repairing commercial laundry equipment than he was out of running a dairy farm.
The farmers were only making $0.02 AUD per litre out of the milk !

Hi Ivan, I found your site a number of weeks ago by accident -(CZcams Algorithm). In my dim and distant past I trained as an auto electrician in the british army working on Armoured vehicles and trucks ( Bedfords) and Land Rovers. In comparison to the stuff on the market to day the electrics are very simple - no CAN bus, dynamos, mechanical regulators etc. I still sort out my own vehicles where I can but obviously they are not that simple. I have learned so much from you - thank you for the detailed diagnosis and showing your methods. I like to try and guess what you are going to find. In this case I though it could be the generator rectifier bridge partially short cct. What I learned is that generating system are not as simple as they used to be, in fact I believe that vehicles are over complicated. Keep up the great work and best wishes from the UK.

The big clue i saw at the beginning was overcharging. Anytime voltage is 15v I get concerned. The customer had a throttle body code with generator codes, and the customer replaced the throttle body without addressing generator codes.
Isuzu had many transmissions replaced cause of 15v. I got involved with a buyback from GM over this. When i checked codes, only transmission codes. However, I noticed 15v, so I replaced the voltage regulator and then diagnosed the transmission only to find all codes gone. It created a recall on the Rodeo for voltage regulator replacement as lots of transmissions were on backorder.

I gotten some wire loom in a few different sizes to protect wire, hoses ect from amazon ..MGI speedware braided split sleeve wire loom.. There are probably other products that are similar. I found this to be superior to the cheap materal used on my old truck .. it reminds me of and i know its not as good as materal used on Cat equipment. . I was told points of contact on wires or harness ect for shorts ect . Thanks for all you do . Enjoy the video

This reminded me of a long running intermittent problem I had with a Vauxhall Omega (UK/Europe upper market sedan built in 1996) 20+ years ago.
Battery would go flat randomly every few weeks or months Jump start and 10 mile drive seemed to fix the problem.
I also had a random problem with the alarm system going off sometimes parked, eventually even driving. It got to the stage where I had to disconnect the battery at night. That was interesting as the key to manually unlock did not work in the driver door so the only way in was via the trunk. Good job the rear seats folded down!
One day it occurred to me that this problem seemed to occur when it was raining or had been graining earlier in the day. That seemed to be important but not immediately useful.
After about a year of this, initially rare but getting more annoying considering this was a German built executive sedan, I happened to notice that the plastic trim panel in front of the windshield had a small crack leading to the drain hole that guided excess excess water into the void a head of the A pillar and then out through the hole at the bottom of that section and onto the ground.
No big deal to have a crack in a bit of plastic trim in a car which, by then, had about 120k miles recorded. Just a drain through, right?
Except that the same area was the location for the vehicle alarm siren.
In certain circumstances of parking in not quite perfectly level surfaces on days that it happened to rain, the crack allowed water to drip directing on the exposed contacts on top of the alarm system, connect across the contacts and either drain the battery or, sometimes, trigger the siren when moving.
I managed to get some silicone sealant on the contacts without having to dismantle half the car (no easy access as it was suoposed to be a secure alarm location)and glued up the crack so that water dripped from the drain hole to where it was meant to drip, missing the alarm system.
That seemed to work. No idea how long it lasted. Within a year I traded it at about 130k miles and I suspect it went for scrap not long after.
Almost a very nice executive car but in the 4 years and 70k mile's I owned it, it have far too many expensive issues (and some obscure ones) for it to be considered good value, despite a tremendous specification for its day.

Interesting fix. Thanks for the video. I once had an alternator that was not charging. I pulled on all wires going to the alternator and one came apart. The wire was broken inside the insulation. No internet in those days so no sharing😁

Great detective work. Use all available resources. Ford should issue a recall on that or at least a TSB. I can see many people getting scammed into new batteries and alternators at dealerships on this repair.

According to Wikipedia, Pennsylvania Furnace is located in Centre County and in Huntingdon County and is 9.7 miles Southwest of State College. So, we can conclude that you are dissatisfied with one of those two counties. I have had serious issues with zoning, myself. I sure would like to see you get your own shop, Ivan, but I can understand your situation. Apparently, Pennsylvania Furnace gets its name from ironworks that existed at one time in the area. GREAT VIDEO!

You can calibrate an old or new battery cable using ohms law ( I = V/R ) to measure >10a dc using the mV setting on your meter. This way you don’t blow fuses and can read up to 200-300 amps easily using your meter safely. There’s a few videos on CZcams showing how it’s done.

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics  Před 9 měsíci

For big draws sure, but would lose accuracy in the mA range 👍

    • @allenotis8616
      @allenotis8616 Před 9 měsíci

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics another option is a 1 ohm resistor (instead of ammeter) in series with battery, and a 10A or so diode in parallel across the resistor to carry surges. below 0.6A you will have 1mv/ma across the resistor. Use a clamp-on ammeter if needed to measure the surges.

    Great find, well done.
Around about 25:13 does it show that the cooler lines had been running on the top of the other cable conduit running across the front of the car (foreground of video)? Is there potentially some wire chaffing inside there as well?

If you really wanted to build a shop you should apply for a variance to your zoning
board. Having good neighbors helps in this situation. You can ask them to sign your
variance stating that they have no issues with said building.
