One Piece Passes Lifetime Batman Sales

  • Manga are taking over the North American comic market in more ways than one. Recently One Piece passed Batman for lifetime sales. Now only trailing Superman. Shocking when you consider One Piece has only been around for 25 years and has only 1 creator. Batman and Superman have existed for over 80 years. Have hundreds of writers and artists and sell in periodic format. Much cheaper than One Piece's volume format. DC and Marvel need to understand what One Piece and manga are doing to generate this success and incorporate it into their strategies. One Piece Passes Batman lifetime sales this week. Next year it may be Superman.

What's amazing about one piece is how deep, subtle and surprisingly even handed the story really is. Enemies in one arc are friends in the next, the Marines are the bad guys...and often, unmistakably the good guys, and vice versa the Pirates. And it's not a moral muddle of characters changing on a whim, but of our mistaken assumptions about the surface motivations of several characters. At the same time, there really are true villains and true heroes. You can say One Piece has something for everyone, a true attempt to please the audience and moments designed to make the readers howl in delight no matter their politics or orientation. (Spoilers)...there's a scene in ennis lobby where Luffy orders Ussop to destroy the flag of the world government with a fire shot. I think almost every fan of the manga, left, right and center is a fan of that shot (and critizes each other for misinterpreting it) . One Piece gets it, and I think the more wonderful things my son has ever given back to me by urging me to read it.

Out of all the things Oda gets done right in One Piece, one of the biggest he gets is Hype. So much so that he left the last chapter on a very high note and went on a two week hiatus. Even being gone for two weeks, sales will still soar. Besides that the closest he gets to side stories are either B or C subplots or any Cover Story.
Although among the things done right, Oda knows how to make interesting characters and how you want to follow them. Besides the Straw Hat Crew, you have numerous side and background characters to bring more into the story somehow.

American comics only ever had about 100m total customers, limited mainly to North and South America, whereas One Piece sells WORLD WIDE, to Africa, Asia, Europe AND ALL the Americas too? Advantages of manga:
    1) Price. Color is nice, but more expensive. Also, I wonder whether color is used as a cover for poor artwork. In black and white, the artwork has to stand on its own.
    2) Contiguous. Each story has a start and an end. Easily identifiable. No confusion over where to begin (unless you're getting into the Fate series).
    3) Single author (1). The story is the concept and execution of a single individual, so the story maintains consistency, continuity, and vision, and doesn't have an issue with lost canon, or reboots.
    4) Single author (2). The authors aren't competing to be put in charge of one of the company's stable of characters. New ideas are constantly being created, and each author has to prove hanself with hans own work. This also means an author can't just ride on the popularity coattails of some other author's work.
    5) Diversity. Due to #4, they don't have to try to force established characters into new identities just to provide 'representation'. Every author creating a new story has to come up with new and unique characters, so it intrinsically drives diversity without stepping on existing stories' canon toes. There's no need to repaint and reboot.
    6) Specialization. You want boys' action/adventure? There's an imprint for that. You want girls' romance? There's an imprint for that. You want boy love stories? There's an imprint for that. You want porn? There's an imprint for that. You want a serious political thriller? There's an imprint for that. They aren't equally popular, but they don't have to be. They just have to be popular enough to allow each imprint to continue to tell the stories that they want to tell.
    7) It's not a speculator's market. In fact, the monthly releases (non-trade, usually run in an anthology magazine like Shonen Jump) are explicitly _disposable_ . So how do they drive popularity? Engagement with the readers. Character popularity polls. Collectibles given away with first print runs of the trades. Sustaining a story involves getting and keeping readers who will want to buy. It's depends strongly on the popularity of people buying, not merely popularity on Twitter. A speculator's market, on the other hand, is the opposite. It depends more on hype and press and people on Twitter driving non-readers to buy, but not engage. That means you need to constantly produce more spectacle in order to produce a new wave of hype, vs the non-speculator approach of continually and consistently drawing in the readers who are buying the product.

      @pandaman1331 Pƙed rokem +1

@@iHateincels The problem is more profound than you think. Your analysis is way too superficial. For starters, it's never a good start to appropriate someone else's work. People generally don't like it when established characters are changed. Look at The Mummy for example. People were displeased with the new Eve in the third movie even though all they did was change the actress. Now imagine what happens if you gender swap a beloved character or change their sexuality or race. It can work but only if the new character is more interesting than the old one. But current Marvel and DC lack the creativity to accomplish that. Their characters are shallow, their skin color, gender or sexuality defines their entire character. And nobody likes generalizations, especially stereotypes. Only woke people don't seem to mind despite constantly stating they hate categorization of people. Yet they do it so much that it's already a clichee. That alone wouldn't be so bad would their characters not be so obnoxious and condescending. Who likes such a character? It's another instance of woke people doing exactly what they allegedly hate. You want to convey a messege through a popular medium? Great, then write your own story. Isn't appropriation one of the matters woke people hate the most? Especially cultural appropriation? Then why do they think it's fine to take a germanic myth like Thor and turn him female? It seems like everything they hate is ok as long as they are doing it. Nobody likes hyposcriscy. At least try to be consistent with your ideology.
If it was indeed racism and homophobia then how do you explain that the same people who hate woke Marvel and DC, love One Piece? Two of the most beloved characters are gay cross-dresses, Bon Clay and Emperor Ivankov aka Ivan. They even have an obese grandmother as one of the 4 strongest characters and everyone thinks she's badass. Yet Marvel and DC can't even make regular females work? How can you explain that? If you are respectful and creative enough then you can make everything work. But both these things are absent in woke culture while abundant in the Japanese Manga industry.
You can call out people on everything you want but you need to be able to take the feedback because these people can also call you out on your bs. But before calling out on people for something you should first check if it's actually true. The entire approach is wrong because all they do is create new stereotypes. They aren't calling out on sexism in general, they are solely accusing white males of such, regardless of wether it's true or not. Django Unchained did it right. There were good and evil white people as well as good and evil black people. No stereotypes, the message was clear, not all white men are your enemies and not all black people are your friends. Instead of shaming you for being a white male, Quentin Tarantino tried to inspire people to relate to the good white man and not be the evil white man. You should be the good black guy Django who respects the white guy that helped him and despised the black guy who helped the racist white people. Tarantino gave you role models. Woke people on the contrary only see black and white and don't even care if it's true.
They don't give you role models and don't try to inspire you, for them it's clear, you are a white man, you must be evil. Shaming never works, it only alienates you. You have to inspire your audience to be good people. People watch movies to be entertained, when the movie ends they want to feel better about themselves and not feel stereotyped. Which one would you prefer? Your entire gender and race portrayed as mysandrists or some of them as people who learned to not hate white men? They are not calling out on racism etc. they are creating it. It's not about solving these issues, it's only about virtue signaling, proving they are morally superior. It's all just a game based on a huge inferiority complex. They never had the Intention to actually solve any sort of problem, they never even bothered wether it actually exists or not.

Manga are cheaper to get, art style is unique to each Manga, both the Manga and Anime are almost match one to one with very little deviation from another, You can start from number one while comics have a problem on where to start, The worst Manga have the better quality compared to what DC and Marvel are making, and Manga are easier to find thanks to being sold thanks to the Anime making it easier to promote, while in book starts while comics had to rely on comic-bookstore, and both the movie, games and shows are nothing like the comics. It is simple, if comics want to survive then they must use the Anime/Manga system.

Its art, fun story and adventurous nature have become beloved. This isn't anything new as America will try to grab or alienate fans, Manga just supplies fans with a great narrative and art. Maybe marvel and DC will learn from walking dead they’re reprinting in color and it seems to be selling well
I do agree I would love more consistency that can vary if writers and art changes during current runs and sometimes not for the better but seeing Drew talk about villains for hire issue 3 *I believe* and how a delay revealed something in the story shown from a different book

Like killing off tony stark in civil war 2 then having to flip back as they made massive clusterfuck with iron heart and so on.

That's always been the big draw I've had for manga: Having a cohesive story. I may not like the ending a lot of the time, but when you have things like One Piece it's pretty amazing to see that kind of dedication for decades.
Conversely the thing that has made stop reading comics as much is their constant jumping from book to book. Nothing's more annoying than getting engrossed in the story then seeing: *_Continued in this book (that you won't find when you search the catalog)_* Thankfully we went to trades eventually, but even then they don't always contain all the side stories related to story run.
It makes me wish Crossgen comics had actually succeeded back in the day, even though they had varied comics the majority were all tied together by a central theme of either the protagonist or antagonist having a sigil that gave them some kind of plot device for the comic series. That way of doing the comics allowed for their to be varied authors and stories, but something that tied them together when crossovers or events happened.
I find that a lot better than dealing with trash like current villainous X-Men or whatever the heck Tom King is taking a dump on at the moment. A lot of the stuff in comics is done to push product, having cohesion among products is pretty powerful for getting fans to come together especially in manga because they're all literally on the same page.

The value of a periodical does not match up to a volume of manga I'm sorry buy respectfully. The western comic book fan has been getting ripped off for generations now. If you go in and pick up most issues from Marvel or DC you are paying anywhere between 3.99-4.99 for a single issue comprising of 16-20 pages of material for what is essentially 1 chapter of a story because it will be collected into a trade later most of the time. Then when you buy said trade it usually goes for 15.99-32.99 depending on the event or just a normal trade.
Where in manga I am getting 5 chapters, usually they're beefy books with at least 100-110 pages (most of the time single chapters are 20-22 pages) for about 9.99-15.99 with a few outliers, which ultimately I feel is a much better value.
The only ones who don't really rip people off is Image with the first volume of any comic book but then they start raising the prices really fast.

Jujutsu, demon slayer, aot, and now spy x family is airing. Jjk n demon slayer r confirmed for a sequel season in 2023 btw, so manga sales of those titles will just keep exploding.

And believe it or not the all time unit sales winner could possibly be (because of the golden age to sixties) a character who would appear in up to ten floppies a month including digests. A character who became so popular that the publisher dumped their superhero titles and ne-named their company after him --- Archie Andrews.

Batman has more quality titles, who cares? One Piece is arguably the most overrated piece of fiction ever.

I agree. The best manga in my opinion doesn’t hold a candle to comics when they are at their best. Also one piece is
 alright.

@@shawnboahene5231 I don't think one is better than the other, both manga and comics have their strengths and weaknesses. Manga in my opinion is more dynamic with it's editing and sequences of movement, whereas comics are very static. One Piece is the McDonald's of manga, a better manga would be Full Metal Alchemist, Negima or even JoJo.

Lmao edgy bat-tards in denial. You just cant accept that a non american comic series stomped your almighty batman. Go cry in your basements

Batman has quality titles? Which one? Like when he admit he pissed his pants? Or that TDKR mess? Batman is over boys, accept that fact.
