Kodak Printomatic Video Manual: Overview, Operation, How to Take a Photo, Double Exposures

  • Probably the most fun digital camera I've used the Kodak Printomatic feels like a true return to Kodak's roots in accessible, consumer photography for everyone. It's no harder to use than a 100-year-old Brownie box camera yet it takes far better photos and prints them on the spot. Not without some weaknesses, however, like battery life and the printer that always runs even without paper, the Kodak Printomatic is nonetheless a light, packable, and easily learned camera for recording and sharing memories.

    Thanks for the review! I love the idea of the filter ring for protection and using a sepia filter! Also, I was looking for information to use other printing papers and your video enlightened me! It's not easy to find someone talking about it. I'm from Brazil and Kodak Zink printing paper is the most expensive here. Thanks again for the nice video.

      Newer model is not improved: it has no black and white/color option, the back of camera has to slide off(does not flip open), the status lights on back of the camera have been deleted. I just bought one on Amazon on Dec 15, 2023, and i am disappointed that these changes have been made.

    I just got one of these used today. With everything you look at being on the back, I noticed that I had a tendency to set it down on its face! After watching your video, I knew I had to do something NOW, before any damage occurred. I wanted to use clear plastic protectors, that you put on something to keep it from scratching the table it's on, but couldn't find any. I ended up using the smallest of felt circles (tan) with 4 at 1, 4, 7, 11 on a clock dial, so when I lay it down, the lens is not touching anything. I also cut up one small felt (about the size of a nickle) and put a strip between the shutter button and color selection switch, and a leftover semi circleon the other side, so it won't be as easy to touch that and take another horrible picture straight up my nose!

    Thanks, this is the best review/tutorial I've seen about the Kodak Printomatic. I have one, production September 2017. I did the firmware update last year but did not notice any improvements in picture quality. Great tip about the step down ring. I'm going to buy one and a filter for color and B&W. Second hand filters are usual not expensive. I think the newer model is the Kodak Smile. Also noticed that Canon introduced two Zink based instant print cameras but they are more expensive and I'm not sure if the step down ring hack can be applied. I kept the blue calibration sheets so I could use other brands of the Zink paper but the price is comparable between the different brands. It's fun and you have a digital file. The digital file's of the Printomatic need to receive a date once downloaded to the computer since there's no possibility to set the date in the camera, but it's not a big issue. However I prefer an analog instant camera using Instax based film due to better color but it's more expensive.

      David Hancock Yes, despite I prefer the colors of Instax, the Printomatic is a joy to use. Light weight, easy to cary with you, and can be powered using a power bank on the go and the camera is inexpensive. I was lucky to obtain one in the 2018 Januari sale at a very cheap price . A few days later the price was up.. Perhaps the webshop made a mistake at first. It’s a fun device but not my main camera. In the mean time I subscribed to your channel. Should explore it in depth. Already can say I enjoyed the two videos of the Pentax auto 110. Still have my first from 1980 and last year I got a Super model, I wanted a spare and Lomography released the new Metropolis also in 110😀.

Can I get a lens to zoom the pic in a little I just want to take a pic of something that is small, like coffee cup size, and there is too much blank space around it? What about if they are landscape that is really far away?

      Nope. The off-center aspect is because the viewfinder lacks parallax correction and is off-center from the lens. The Zink photos are definitely glossier and they do look more digital, no doubt. Colors are cooler, too. Hmm. First try using the rest button on the bottom (a safety pin or cell phone SIM card release pin will work to reset it.) The camera, next time it turns on, should push out the paper. If it doesn't, slowly pull the paper out of the camera (don't push it back in). I had to do that once.

    I just bought a Printomatic on Amazon. Bought Dec 15, 2023. It does not have a color/ black and white option switch. Also the back panel slides off, it does not flip open. The power switch is now on top, where the black and white/color switch is on yours.
    Also the three lights on back of camera are gone, not on the new camera.

    You could glue a 1/4” nut on bottom of camera for tripod.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  Před 6 měsíci

      Yeah, but I'd worry about it being level and having a secure connection. Tripod sockets are recessed to increase the surface area contacting the tripod or quick-release plate. Not having that will lead to a wobbly tripod connection.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  Před 4 lety +1

      You know, good question. I don't fully know. I can't tell if it has an aperture or not. I suspect not and that exposure control is simply done via shutter speed.
      But there's no way to control anything about exposure control.

    I just took some photos with my new printmatic camera that I got from Amazon this week. Photos were terrible! Washed out, blurry and very yellow. Used Kodak zink paper that came with camera and also zink paper that I purchased. The results were all the same: terrible. I used the color calibration card. It did not help. Photos were taken indoors with built in flash. I am extremely disappointed in quality!
    I will try taking outdoor photos to see if results are better.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  Před 2 lety

      That's tricky. It happened to me a couple of times. First try using the camera reset button on the bottom of the camera and fully charging it. Next time it turns on it might eject the paper.
      If that fails, what I did was remove the paper that wasn't stuck from inside the camera, push the paper that is stuck from the inside until I could grab it from the outside, then gently and steadily pull. I would not recommend pulling against the direction that the camera feeds the paper as I believe that could damage the feed mechanism.

    I realize this is a 3 year old video, but here's a tip. After watching you accidentally take photos by accidentally bumping the shutter button, or setting it down on the button, I super glued a rubber o-ring slightly larger in diameter than the button around it. The o-ring sticks up slightly higher than the shutter button and makes pressing the shutter more intentional. The o-ring I used is about 15mm inside diameter, for those who don't have a selection of sizes to pick from.
