I met Chris years ago at a dive bar in Quincy Massachusetts. He was with the only hot girl in the bar, and he stopped to talk to me and my meathead friends. Since we were from the Boston area, obviously we were all guys who enjoyed a fight. Not only did he talk to us for 10 minutes leaving his gorgeous date alone at the bar, but he did so graciously, and complimented both Jim McKenzie and Jay Miller. He was 100% class. God Bless Chris. Truly a gentleman!

Your hockey career is a testament to the value of toughness, guts and determination. You deserve a lot of fans. The way you handled addiction and then used that experience to help others shows a different kind of toughness, but the same kind of value in guts and determination.

Wow, Chris Nilan, what can I even say about you that has not already been said. I remember it all, but you won't remember this, but I used to work Chez Paree as a busboy and met you many times. You always remembered me and even asked the managers to make sure I would busboy in the section you were sitting in. You chatted me up many times even with all the beautiful distractions and always gave me a huge tip when you left. I admired you as a hockey player, an enforcer and a great human being. I remember the day you were traded and I couldn't believe it and was so angry and pissed off that I stayed away from the forum for a while. I have nothing but the utmost respect for you and everything you've done, even in your darkest hour, the fighter in you prevailed!

When he came to the Rangers, we were stoked. He was business as usual, taking on the baddest dudes in the league night in and night out....But something was off. He wasnt joking around with teammates , kinda just kept to himself and really hardly ever even smiled. Remember there was no You tube back then either, so we just noticed this from tv games and the ones we went to , but I assure you he was just as broken hearted as the Montreal fans were 100%.... Glad he got to retire there 👍

When your book came out he bought it for my birthday, read it in 2 day's and is one of my prized possessions. Almost meant you in Belleville, Ontario in 2012 as the Alumni team was playing there. You got injured but asked Sergio Memesso if he would take my card in locker room and you signed it. My cousin played with you, Doug Jarvis. You are my all time favorite Montral Canadians player, and a real team player. Never picked on the little players but went straight after the big guy's. Fighting Irish! I miss it as a logical outcome of an intense style of play and players of that 70s-90s era. When the fighting is part of a really physical contest between a bunch of elite athletes? It's healthy and kept the sticks under control and the talented stars protected. Hockey being a substitute for inter-tribal warfare, as are each of the 4 major team sports, we forget that outside of hockey the fight is completely taken out of man. Unfortunately there are no longer any men capable of fighting their way out of a paper bag. It's sad to see. It's not "progress" of the sport, it's a cultural reflection of what the masses have been turned into through psychological warfare. After the whole world has been conquered by one small group, what is left if it isn't to conquer the individual? The way people give them their DNA, the essence of their being, and pay for it too, it's really sad to see so many willingly dumb themselves down in acts of total submission like that.

I’d love to know the best NON-enforcer Nilan ever took on. There weren’t many “scorers who could fight”. A rare power forward here or there perhaps. Nilan was such a good enforcer that the only folks who could usually go toe to toe were other enforcers or, at best, cheap shot artists (Ulf gave Nilan a good fight once… though Nilan still won it; I’m not sure I’d call Ulf an enforcer… maybe in some broad definition, but he was more of a big guy who took cheap shots… I’ve got no time or respect for that; at least Nilan knew his role… bugged the sh*t out of me because he wasn’t playing for “my team”, but I respected him… had a job to do, he did it). Anyway, you know, if you matched Nilan up against Craig Berube, thug on thug, lol, Berube might take him on size alone. But Nilan won even most of those matchups. So… Nilan versus a NON-enforcer was usually not even a fair fight… over in two seconds. So, I’m just curious to know if any non-enforcer had his number. I do know that Neely laid him out, but it was a quick and not particularly vicious fight… and that’s the only fight of theirs I recall (so, I don’t think they had multiple battles from which to build a resume). So, I *think* Neely could take out Nilan, but I’m not really sure. Anyone else out there - non-enforcer - who could take on Nilan??
