I think maybe behind Michael's (10 yo) question was how did the animals distribute over the land masses, particularly over oceans (i.e., the Galapogos island weirdos, etc.)
The presence of land bridges, incomplete tectonic movement (associated with the flood) and ice bridges are thought to be the answer. Answers in Genesis and the Institute for Creation Research have done a lot of intellectual work in this area.
But a secular school teacher can just say "Oh, they all evolved from right where they are."
