One of the legendary moments in MMA histories. What makes it more perfect is IU also won Album of the year of 2017, beating famous big boy gps bigbang,BTS,EXO & PSY.
This is a beautiful and unforgettable stage that unfailingly brings tears to my eyes in spite of multiple viewings. This is also a performance better seen without anticipation. The rawness of the emotional response makes it last in our memory. I have to thank you for indulging us with the Aristotle's philosophy in assessing this masterpiece, also completely unexpected.
While the performance is magnificent simply through its "stand-and-deliver" presentation, IU added more magic to the setup of the stage with her artistic and humanistic mind.
In case you have not already learned, the song "Dear Name" is about not forgetting people by calling out their names when they seemed to have faded away from us. For this stage, IU invited others to join her on stage to share the spotlight (remember the intro video in which IU sent a letter to each?). These are unknown folks in the industry like trainee, busking musician, backup singer and rookie artist whose names people don't know. You could see that IU moved her mic away during a segment and let others carry the song. Those Korean characters projected on the walls are people's name for remembrance.
IU's heart and mind set her apart from the rest. She is a person striving for excellence and purpose, as wonderfully illustrated through this epic performance.
I may not follow IU as consistently as Uaenas do but I like her, no I love her for exactly the same reasons you have mentioned.
This one of the most unforgettable stage performances form MMA2017. It was so genuine, beautiful, perfect, flawless and magical performance of her. She really is an actual angel. And today she just donated $700,000 in celebration of her 13th year Annoversary. Korean call her Donation Angel.

"Dear Name" in particular, was a significant performance as it was a collaboration with dozens of newly debuted singers, chorus-based singers, & busking singers who have been active but are yet unknown in the music industry. Singers of all ages created a 60-person choir & put on a touching performance with IU. Afterwards, the names of all the participating singers were shown on the screen.
A source from IU's agency stated, "Dear Name" was one of the double title tracks of IU's fourth album "Palette" & IU herself penned its lyrics & chose its title. She titled the song "Dear Name" because she wanted all the names worldwide to be the main character of the song. It was an honor to perform at an awards ceremony but IU also wanted to take the opportunity to focus on other "names". She is happy & thankful that she was able to use this performance to convey her sincerity as an artist.
IU is really an angel. To celebrate her 13th anniversary of her debut, she will donate about 7,22065 US dollars in supplies to child protection facilities, elderly people living alone, families with unmarried mothers, etc. on September 18.
Her celebrations are usually donations, and she has used donations in the name of fans in the past. She should be the favorite female artist in Korea to donate.
By the way, I strongly recommend this version of "Dear Name", she received an unfortunate news on the day of the concert, it was the most difficult live performance.

she sold out a WHOLE 360 DOME and entertained them all by herself with her singing and talents. she overcame poverty and became one of the most famous and respected kpop soloists. she is extremely humble and donates a lot of money. she is truly an angel

I completely agree with you about not needing spectacle when you are that good and that’s one of the reason why IU does so many live performances with just her band in a small room and you should check out those intimate clips to appreciate her even more! IU also learned the sign language for her drama called “My Mister” which you should watch, she was the best actress and the story was so touching! IU donated to help those who can’t speak and always helps out unknown singers providing opportunities to be on stage and this was one of the moments and I cried when I watched the show. IU is a true angel and we love her!

Yeah not many outside korea know about that story, It's so true, Joo Hyun Sook the director of 당신의 사월 (your Sewol) Included IU's name in the credits at the end of the film. She said she had a rough time doing the film and many friends suggested to hear Dear name and that helped her a lot, she literally said she put that song on repeat forever. Also not widely known, that year IU donated the profits of the 8 concert tour for "A Flower Bookmark" album to the families. I was just passing by but noticed your comment. Thanks!

Dear name is a song that doesn’t fail to make me bawl my eyes out even before the end of first verse. This particular performance gives me chills all over my body. It keeps getting better and better every time I watch it as I know the facts of what she was going through. She was literally in between shows for her palette concert, had a concert the next day, and this girl stole the show (and all the awards that year hahah) to convey such a singular message in such a pure way. What I love the most about her is how her heart is visible all throughout her work. What a beautiful heart she has. She’s precious to this world!

Thank you for, again, a great review of the MMA 2017performance of IU. I totally agree with your assessment of a masterful performance - it should be great as a stand and deliver performance as it is just as good listening to it. I don't know if you've seen this but here is a throwback to IU and Taemin performing together in Bangkok for the first time when they were just 17 yrs old. They referenced this collab in the interview they did on IU's Pallette show when Shineewas there as guests. I hope you enjoy it.

오늘도 퇴근길에 이름에게를 들으며 왔는데, 문득 이 영상이 눈에 들어와 보고 갑니다. 물론 이 노래가 죽은 아이들을 기리는게 아니라고 본인이 말했지만 알 만한 사람들은 다 압니다. 곡 처음에 나오는 피아노 단음이 배의 고동소리를 뜻한다는 걸요. 세월호때 이 노래를 아이유가 불렀는데 들을때 마다 가슴이 무너지고 눈물이 나는걸 아직도 멈출 수가 없네요. 특히 같은 동네 아이들이 그렇게 가게 되어서 너무 가슴이 아픕니다.😢
