      Michael Romeo brings in elements of Shawn Lane into his playing. There is even a nod to Holdsworth in this track during one of the interlude solos. He to me is what I wished Yngwie had become musically. So many times, a great guitarist comes on the scene, then stops developing. Check out his work on his two War of the Worlds solo albums. He is an amazing composer as well.

      I felt the same way haha. I understand making the comparison as a learning listener of the genre. But yeah, Metallica are children compared to Symphony X. Musically, lyrically, in terms of skill; they pale in comparison to Symphony X in every measurable regard. Metallica are a Thrash band. Symphony X are top level musicians.

    • @smitlag
      @smitlag Před 27 dny +1

      Sounds to me that you need to diversify a bit more outside the scope of Metallica or Dream Theater. The comparison to DT is a bit more understandable in terms of sheer chops, but musically, they are quite different. Other bands you might want to explore are Fates Warning, Pain of Salvation, Circus Maximus, Haken. Metallica couldn't carry water for this band. And while I love Dream Theater, James LaBrie has been their weak spot for years now. Russell Allen is a pure beast of a vocalist with many colors to his voice.

    As for the comparisons, it's easy to hear Symphony X as Metallica meets Dream Theater. DT and SX came about around the same time so they were contemporaries of each other. Symphony X was about 4 years later. Not to say they weren't influenced by DT but I think there's more inspiration drawn from bands like Rush, Kansas, Black Sabbath, and Dio. I know Michael Romeo and Russell Allen are heavily influenced by classical composers so there's that as well.

    James LaBrie is my favorite singer, but Sir Russell Allen is a beast!
    I'd say the band's sound is heavily influenced by classics like Kansas and Queen, but hey, it's been more than 20 years since this was recorded, 90's Prog Metal was just building its own sound.
    Maybe the latest Symphony X material it will be a better aproach to you.
    if you're gonna give SX another chance, try Serpent's Kiss - just 5.00 minutes long song - before going with another epic 20 minute piece.

    Thank you very much for your review of this great band.
    The fun thing about this band is that it is actually not Trash Metal, neither is Folk or Power Metal. It is progressive metal, and like a good progressive metal band, they try to tell a story in every song. So you will see different elements in every song they wrote: different drums, different guitars, bass, and even vocal style.
    This song is about (I believe) the Exodus; however, the story is told from Lucifer's perspective. It tells his rise and fall. That is why they sing so aggressively at times.
    These different guitar riff sections are part of the story, like a fight between good and evil, which eventually good prevails - hence the end of the music being a little slower.
    Well, hope you like it =)

    This is a very old and - kind of - experimental song from early in their career (1997 !! More than 23 years ago. At this point, none of Avenged Sevenfold or Dream Theater's "Metropolis part II" album existed). Back in the time they didn't have made any concert yet and they were considered like a nerdy "studio band".
    I think they became more mature between "The new mythology suite" and "The Odyssey" albums (in other words between 2000-2002).
    The eponymous song "The Odyssey" is a must listen, and it is (at least at a production level) two levels above the Divine Wings epic song that you listened here.
    Also they made a couple of way more "modern sounding" and testosteronous albums between 2007 and 2011. I don't consider their last 2015 album as good as the two previous ones.
    Happy Christmas to you too ;)

      @@wilko6679 I mean, it was one thing hearing Bruce Dickinson slip a notch, but the only thing his singing lost was long phrases shortening, whereas if you listen to some of LaBrie's performances - I mean, take the live video for Octavarium (the one everyone's reacting to): Jordan's intro is majestic, then Petrucci and Myoung come in and it all sounds incredible. Then LaBrie sings in his middle range, which there's totally nothing wrong with - but then he goes into the "as far as I can say" part and it just kills the mood as if I got stabbed in my ear with a screwdriver.
      He's a brilliant writer, that's for sure, but he had to either put DT's sound first or his own. I know which he picked.

    Iconoclast is one of my favorites from them. Devin Townsend and Symphony X are my two all time favorite bands. ❤ Sir Russ is ✨divine✨ at the end of this one.

    If you want to hear a more modern sound, check their album Underworld. It's quite recent, and it delivers.

    Symphony x is one of those bands like dream theater that you can listen a 20 minute song without getting bored, cause it's never the same it always changes, these bands are way too complex to listen for someone that doesn't understand music very well, lots of sounds but in a beautiful armony, now i'm 34 and i've been listening metal since i was 13, i found DT and symphony x when i was 15 and i can say that are the 2 most beautiful bands for me, 15:48 in your video...the most lethal part of the song

    Symphony X is a fantastic band! And Russell Allen is a Phenomenal singer!

  • @FVD
    @FVD Před 3 lety

    Symphony X went more guitar driven from The Odyssey onward. As you will have seen already, the title track from the aforementioned album is a must, then definitely check out The Accolades 1&2, The Bird/Serpent War leading into Egypt from V: The New Mythology album, Eve of Seduction, When All Is Lost and many more...
    Sir Russell Allen is a beast of a vocalist! I would also recommend checking out Dawn of a Million Souls from the Ayreon album Flight of the Migrator album where Russell and Michael Romeo both feature. Romeo plays an insane solo which made Ayreon head honcho Arjen Lucassen jealous, lol!

    Yeah, you're right! It is my first time listening to this song as well, and I cannot help but think it's really some kind of Metallica and Dream Theater mashup) And some Ayreon as well - due to this singer participating in Ayreon occasionally, I guess)
    So yeah, this is a masterpiece, greatly done, but after DT and Metallica it sounds kinda secondary, frankly speaking. Great, but I heard it all somewhere already)

    Symphony X is pretty much heavier DT with some epic and neoclassical stuff mixed in. They have different albums and styles, some more prog, some heavier. Michael Romeo is always considered a top tier guitar player but people don't often talk about how good a composer he is. He basically writes everything himself, including orchestrations. Russell Allen is a vocal beast, extremely diverse and very consistent in live performances. If you like more the prog stuff than the heavy, I'd recommend Egypt next. If you wanna hear how heavy they can get, go for Domination

    The Odyssey by these guys is amazing also. Basically the same type of song, but more epic and not so "all over the place". The production is also a lot better and not outdated as you called it :)
    Everything from the Paradise Lost album is also gold and a lot more accessible

    I think russel allen has a really more grasper voice than labrie. But i can relate to your reaction. Thats outdated, but brilliant. For me, its nostalgia. I've been listening to symphony x since im 12. Before ive even knew what Dream Theater is. So im a lot biased. Great reaction. Subscribing.

    The main guitarist is influenced by Kiss, Led Zeppelin, Rush, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, as well as neo classical shredders like Uli Jon Roth and Yngwie Malmsteem. While Symphony X and Dream Theater were formed around the same time, just a couple years difference.

    Nice reaction, SX is my fav band, even though I also think that the Odyssey is their best job, I never recommend long songs like these for a person who doesn't know the band.
    I'd say try their newer stuff first: Iconoclast, Nevermore, Domination, Eve of Seduction

    If you listen to a bit more Symphony X, you'll find that the vocalist (Russell Allen) is quite different from Dream Theater's vocalist (James LaBrie.) He has a lower voice with a lot more grit and power than James.
