Homeless Youth Sleeping Rough in London after Mother Died

- Shaun is 19 years-old sleeping rough on the streets of London. After his father died, his mother got depressed. She started to drink more and take sleeping pills. Her depression got worse until she was hospitalized.
Four weeks before this interview, Shaun's mother died. Two weeks later, the landlord kicked him out because he couldn't pay the rent.
Shaun's first night of homelessness, he woke up with his shoes stolen. Shaun said he didn't know the rules for sleeping rough. He learned to use his shoes as a pillow.
The London Assembly housing committee report estimates that there are 13 times more hidden homeless people in London than those who are sleeping rough. Almost a quarter of a million under-25s homeless youth in London have stayed in an unsafe place because they have nowhere to call home.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.
It's great that many of you want to help Shaun, but the truth is there are tens of thousands of homeless young adults just like Shaun sleeping rough, and THEY ALL NEED HELP. My suggestion is to connect with a local homeless services provider that's working to end homelessness and support them through donations, volunteering, or advocacy. It's IMPORTANT that we all take tangible actions to help prevents homelessness from happening in the first place, and if a person ends up sleeping rough, we need to support the organizations working to get them off the streets into housing! Please take that compassion and passion you're feeling and use it to help end homelessness for all young adults!

I've lost both my parents within the last two years - I'm 40 and have a home and I'm having a hard time coping. Can't imagine how hard it must be for this kid. My heart goes out to him.
Hope you're keeping well. I lost my dad when I was 17, and my mom 17 years later 24 days away to my 34th bday. I felt sooo bitter then. I thought I'm gonna have my mom at least until in my 40s but we had a big age gap. And who'd have known, right?
@@paullights2154 Yeah, it's difficult not to feel a sense of bitterness at times. My mum died of cancer in 2019, and my dad died just this January of COVID. Like yourself, when my mum passed, I kinda assumed my dad would be around for a while, but it wasn't to be.
@@Bertaut true, true. My four older sisters were lucky to spend more time with our mom and dad. I'm extra attached to mom as I was the youngest. Anway, everything has ups and down, now that I'm alone, I am free to do as much as I want to do. Alone but not lonely.
@@Bertaut your loss was just almost yesterday. My guess is that the older you get to be with parents the harder it is to get used to. Keep well. Time is your best friend.
Do you want me to live with you?
I spent 4 years on the street sleeping rough. Because I kept myself the best I could people didn't realise I was homeless. I remember I went to a food place where they gave out hot food and they refused to accept I was homeless because I kept myself well. In truth I would spend all day in the Library. I had got a card with an address on it before I became homeless. The only time someone realised I was homeless was when I went into Burger king to bye something to eat and they gave me free Onions rings. I thought it was a mistake and they insisted I have them. Its not easy their were times when I wanted to give up and then their were times I didn't. Thankfully I'me no longer homeless and have been able to sort myself out. I even had a number of job prospects before this crisis hit. When this crisis is over I plan on getting back into work.
Glad to know you're safe now. Good luck on getting the job! ^^

Be kind, because this could be any of us one day!
Yes it could and it's not fun,
especially when it's 6 below or 99 degrees.
Being kind didn't mean a shit. I became homeless & I'll never trust any human again. That's what I learned.
Those who are clued up know and fully appreciate they're only one or two pay checks away from this.
Your right, we could be in this guy's shoes, thank god and the universe it didn't happen to me at 19,nobody plans to be on the street.
I agree, but do it without expecting something return because that's the true kindness. I do believe in karma and ' what goes around, comes around ', but do it sincerely without expecting anything in return because nobody has the same heart or belief and not everyone is gonna do exactly what you did. Have a good day ♡
Saw this video last Wednesday. Today I was approached by a barefoot homeless man asking for me to buy him some sandals. I immediately remembered this kid saying his shoes got stolen. I remembered wanting to help this kid out as I too lost both parents (but I’m fortunate to be a bit older than him, have a job and a supportive family)... I’m from Brazil and I was impacted by his story so the best way I found to “help” him was to help someone in my neighborhood and I bought the man a meal and a pair of sandals. Goes to show that in times where the internet can be a cruel and shallow place, it can also be used for good and kindness.
From heart to heart! 👍
What can I complain about, after seeing this? A toothache? The pouring rain that prevents me from going for a walk? The postman who was late? From last night's nightmare? From the dust that has accumulated on the shelf? Having to get up early to go to work?
You don’t have to compare yourself to the less fortunate and say you don’t deserve to complain. None of us wished to be born, we were forced to. No matter the situation, and the situations of others around us, we can accept how we feel about it :)
@E. B. and @M N both these comments are beautiful and thanks for your kind perspectives.
Life is absurd, to be honest, philosophies answered my question to life, we should just accept reality and move on the next plan, it's hard but we can't control it so let's focus on the things we control; our actions.
I wouldn't be mad being a street kid, at least i have something to do and also go outside a lot more, have education and a home to stay in is quite boring, having a computer would help a lot when there's absolutely nothing to do, but i don't have one, that's all i complain about everyday honestly, sounds silly but that's the best thing i could think of in this type of living condition right now, hopefully i have something to do when i'm an adult, because i'm sick of doing nothing
The total cost of the royal wedding for Harry and Meghan was around $43 million (or £32 million) Yet there are homeless on the streets of London. This should bother us.
How much did Kate and William's wedding cost? Another Mahgan hater!!! You people just can't get over Harry marrying Mahgan.... Too bad it's done.
I totally understand ... not being mean to royal family or anything. Just I prefer the tax I pay can really goes to these poor young people , this money can be used by government to give him some skill training, find him a basic job etc. Instead of buying royal members luxuries. Imagine how many outfits Meghan had everytime when they appear in public or media. Maybe the price of one of her dresses can give this young man a two months training course in anything: baking, cooking, fixing something, cleaning etc. InStead of just a clothes Meghan wears once. Having no issues to her and she is just an example to representing all the tax money that used in a weird way that I sincerely don’t understand.
There you go!! You hit the nail on the head. If people like the royal family had to face life on the street, it would be a whole new ballgame. My wedding cost a whole total of 100.00 for two witnesses and the cost of the license. I can’t imagine 43 million for a wedding, that’s insane. Think of what one could do with that kind of money.... a homeless shelter or a civic center, education.
When it comes to the monarchy...."off with their heads!" (French and Russians had the right idea)

MT Reza $500 or £500 a month. Either way that would barely cover food surely. No where they can cook so would have to be take away (out) food all the time, unless there are soup kitchens. I don’t know but tell me could you pay rent of $100 / £100 a week somewhere, and pay bills and food too out of that? Meaningful...
Thanks for making obvious what was clearly the message in this entire channel. This needed to be said.
I agree. I take care of disabled, poor, and elderly people. My one patient used to be homeless. He said what kept him down was that he couldn’t get a job because he didn’t have a home address and didn’t know anyone in the city he became homeless. He said he was this way for 3 years. What got him out of this was he saved money from collecting glass bottles. He then bought some used tools and started fixing trashed furniture and selling it at a flea market. Finally God sent a kind older man who offered him a trailer to live in at the flea market.

What he should be his first priorities is the other two wishes
The one thing I can’t barely understand is how this charming young man, gentle and obviously kind, happens to have no friends at all.
He's probably just shy like me.
I can relate to people who might seem like everyone would want to be their friends but have no friends at all.
I have never had conflicts with anyone. I've always been a good student (I'm in college now). I don't curse, I don't do drugs. In high school, I was an good athlete and praised dancer. I also try to help others as much as I can, even if that just means giving them homework answers so they can get good grades. My problem? I'm just really shy and awkward when it comes to social situations :(.
I don't have any close friends even though I live in a college campus with thousands of people my age. But nobody wants to put the time to get close to someone who lacks social skills as much as I do. And they don't have to, but it still sucks ☹.
Exactly what I thought! If my friend would be in a state like this, I would gladly invite him to my house. But, of course, he should find some job and add something from him.
Furthermore, where are the relatives from his parents lines? I can believe the version that he has no friends, but what about his dad/mum‘s friends/relatives...
If there really are none, and he is THAT LONELY... gosh

@Travis Bickle Watch your mouth, dude!
@Travis Bickle
Firstly, if someone wants to do a good thing, you shouldn't have to think negatively. It is up to him/her whether he/her doing it with truth purposes or not. You are only the audience, you don't have any rights to direct their actions. You don't know behind the scenes and post-production. So, shut up and mind your own business.
Second, let's talk about me. I live with my family. They absolutely know my real intention. Whenever I am, I will always try to not doing and thinking about bad things. So, who are you? You don't even know me. Come to my house and you will know what will I do for you as I did to my friends who visit my house.
Third, I didn't choose people for offering my help. I don't care whether they are good or bad, rich or poor, young or old, male or female, black or white, as long as they need my help, I am open to anyone.
Do I have to tell you all of these? No, I shouldn't. But you make me want to show my cards.
Now, I tell you once again, mind your own business! And please fix your brain. Thank you, no offense.

I don't blame him, it's so expensive to rent in London even in a shared flat. Getting a job is also very hard. 💔 I hope one day he'll not be homeless anymore. I wish I could help
Thanks for the reply. I live in Canada, but is it that hard to find an "ok" job and shared rent in London?
I will give two examples to put things into perspective how hard is to find a job with the lockdown. I am a student so I was looking for a job from 2020 February for part-time jobs. Finally secured a burger place part-time job a month ago. Before that, I used to have 3years of catering and small experience as a marketing assistant. My boyfriend who is doing IT in a good company to get his job he needed about 2-3 months and he used the recruiting company to help him out. More jobs are opening now, thankfully!
The market in london is in good shape overall but the housing is ridiculously bad.
I was in a jam not too long before you were on this video 7 months ago.
Such an honest take on what my former fellows go through out here in California.
Made me cry twice because he said it all about how we all walk on a shoestring and pass our blessing to help another.
I have alot of growing to do and acceptance of my disability, but life is better.
My hope in writing this is that your life is better now; that you are settled with work and your grieving has subsided.
All the best in 2021.
My prayers are with all of those who are struggling today. 🙏
It's really sad, the poor guy lost both his parents and probably feels like he has no one in the world that gives a shit about him. I imagine the hardest part is probably thinking "How in the world am I going to get out of this?" I remember a few years back I was unemployed, but was unemployed for a long time. I was able to get EI, but that ran out and I still had no job. Now I wasn't in near as bad a position as this guy, I was able to live with my parents, but I just remember the hopeless feeling after going so long without a job, like how can I get myself out of this position I'm in? But I did, and I hope things turn around for this guy!
When you're unemployed for so long, it's very hard to see light at the end of the tunnel. The only answer is to turn to Jesus each day for help, and when He answers, don't forget who rescued you. When the pain is severe and life is cruel, it's hard even to think of asking. Nothing is ever that simple.
Is there no one that can help this young man ? U should be ashamed Britain

A UK citizen under the age of 25 who lost his parents can apply for Universal Credit.
Where he going to get a laptop or a phone? A person won’t give him one to use because of the way he looks. An Internet cafe won’t let him in because he looks like a junky. It’s very difficult for these people and no one understands.
@@bobdoyle4058 its not impossible.. He could walk into that place itself and get support from there.
if you dont want to be on the street u just fight... its not impossible and would rather try than just sitting on the ground the whole day.. ;/ Nah that makes it impossible...
Not without an address you can't. Oh, and you're not eligible for Universal credit if you aren't ready and available for work. You have to search for jobs every day on the UMJ website and call whatever company your advisor instructs you to.
How does a homeless person manage that? You try living rough and see if you can manage it without resorting to alcohol and/or drug abuse.
London has many shelters available for the homeless and most have a social worker attached to the team, it is possible to get help, it looks like he is in central London and Webber Street near Waterloo station is open 6 days a week offering support , food and clothing and advice for people, this is a humble polite person having to cope with bereavement he needs people to talk to, there is the Salvation Army that also offers similar support based in Oxford Street tragically Covid 19 has forced these places to close and I have no ideas of any alternative at this point in time
@@MarkChapmanDr, you are right, the shelters are closed due to covid restrictions
My heart breaks for him it really does. I can’t imagine living a life that hard.
I remember one time I got talking to a homeless guy in Glasgow and before he was on the streets he was in a well paid job and life was going good I guess. One night he drove his mom home from a relatives house and he crashed the car and his mom died on impact but he pulled through. He couldn’t go on after that, he couldn’t cope with normal life and the guilt was too much so he ended up on the streets. He wasn’t addicted to anything he just couldn’t go on living his life after that
Seems like society's best people are rotting in the streets completely abandoned. Too many things wrong with this world.
Imagine if all of the riches give little bit of their wealth to help those homeless on the street, even just build a roof or shelter in some unused places, for them just feel safe, not have to worry where they should go the next day or if their things will get stolen just to ease their minds, so they can restoring courage, go find a job to pull themselves out from this seems lightless period of their lives. All of the youngs are our future, they are the ones that will shape the fate of this world, this planet.
I would share my house with this young man, he deserves a chance in life.

The sadness in his eyes made me cry. God bless him, So young and life has been so cruel. I hope he is off the streets now.
Hi Mark.
Watched a number of your videos, and they all break my heart. Just wanted to thank you for doing this, and to say that I understand and support the reasons that you run this channel in the way that you do. I get that people want to help the individuals involved, but your contribution to this cause is advocacy and awareness raising. You can't give out personal information, and it would be logistically impossible for you to keep track of the people featured given their lifestyle.
There isn't a perfect solution to all this, but the best thing is for people to support local charities that help the homeless. I personally support Centrepoint in the UK, and there are numerous others on both a national and local level. You might not be able to help Shaun individually, but sadly there are plenty more with similar stories and they all need help right now. Help them by supporting a local charity which is organised to for that.
Or actually engage with the next homeless person you see and do what you can to help them.
i movve to london and here people love saying thats homeless are just lazy people and can find jobs easy. but when depression and loneliness follow you its like carrying a massive moutain rock in your back because you have nobody
I know where they’re coming from. I’m from Ireland and they’re plenty of lazy people who can easily get a job but no, they go on the dole getting hundreds a week at the expense of the tax payer. England also have a dole/social welfare system so I think the reason why they’re not on it is because they have been denied for a reason. EG they can get a job but they won’t, they’re ok drugs and alcohol, or they’re crazy.
So true, I’m a single mother with a young child and I know how it feels like when no family and no support there but we have to keep going and I hope and pray for this man and other people to sort themselves out soon just the will power and determination can beat this depression.
Sam Walsh1 you are right but these people need some time to start from somewhere. I went on benefits for six months until I sorted out my five years old where to send him after school and actively looking for a full time job it’s horrible to go to that place for signing in and that was my first time and hope and pray that last time.
Sometimes Mentally and emotionally it’s difficult when you lost your love ones. But I agreed with you that there are plenty of people are abusing this system and burden on tax payers.
Lol it’s life people working in high paying jobs have depression and loneliness, it’s about being able to be strong enough to deal with it and get on with life, if not you sit around and do nothing your whole life, survival of the fittest
@@RaahPolo what make people depressed ?

Once when I was in London walked past a young homeless man and he looked so sad and miserable he would just stare on the floor. I just walked by but then I felt terrible about it so I returned and gave him a pound. Honestly I really wish I had given him more or bought him something to eat or drink and just had a conversation with him. The world needs more humanity and love.
He reminds me of some famous actor. This guy is well spoken, cute and not on any drugs etc. This shouldn’t be his life 😭😭
Was you on nonce catch video lol?
What?!!
@Convertible Obv not. But the fact he's not on drugs and is well able to talk ( intelligent ) he should have more than living on the streets. I also don't mean drug addicts deserve to be on the streets, of course not. But this guy could easily be able to handle a job and manage a house as he's not on drugs so he should be helped quickly. Whereas a drug addict needs detox, rehabilitation, support and also wants to stop drugs. Which means a lot more time and money from the Government. So all I meant was this guy could be easily off the streets with a small bit of help whereas a drug addict would need alot more help but they do deserve to be off the streets too.
@Convertible i agree
Poor baby. He is alone. This makes me cry. I really hope this young man gets the help he needs.

That's terrible. 19 is far too young for such terrible conditions.
It is too much for any individual left facing life left out in the cold. Where are the social welfare programs and why are they not helping him? Everyone needs a hand up now and then. This young man is prey for those wealthy pedophiles out there. Bet he has had to fend off a few unwelcome advances already. Society should be looking out for those falling homeless, or society is totally unworthy of even being called society. Help another individual in dire straits; it may be you next.
@Politically Incorrect Bender It's what happens when your parents don't parent you. My kids (in their thirties) can still pass as late teens. They were parented well..
@Politically Incorrect Bender dude ia literally in streets, if you can't care for yourself, obviously you would look old. Its rough on streets.
Any age is too young really. No one could ever be prepared to live like this...
@Edgar J Rimkus I went to work at 14. I worked, fulltime, while in school, at 15, 16, 17.. left home and moved across country at 17. I get it. BUT, and this is a big part of it; I had the (emotional if nothing else) support of my family, if I needed it. I was, like you, pretty headstrong, and I suffered many difficult times, but never asked my parents for help.
This kid has no parents to ask. That is a big difference. He literally had the rug pulled out from under him; big difference. Besides, these kids are simply not raised as were we. They are not taught how to get and maintain jobs. And, the jobs are not simply there, like when we were kids.
