THE LIST
Hero’s Journey - Kikuchiyo from Seven Samurai
It is a pitting of pridefulness versus self-sacrifice, of noble dreams versus their difficult realities, all set against the backdrop of a peasant's orphan past.
Moral Growth - Jules from Pulp Fiction
Pulp Fiction does a wonderful job of walking us quietly through his revelation-by-parts on the way to becoming a righteous man.
Reluctant Hero - Rick Blaine from Casablanca
A broken heart made him shun heroism, but it takes the same woman who broke his heart to soften it, and we get to watch gleefully as he reveals himself to be the hero he tried so hard not to.
Lets Go/Becomes Free - Bobby Dupea from Five Easy Pieces
We're not quite sure where he's going. Or how specifically he's changed. But he's reached his breaking point, and decided to leave it all behind. Whatever life he had before, he's given it up now, and is no longer the same person for it.
Grow Together - The Entire Cast from Boyhood
For all the emotional growth an actor can do on screen in a typical 3 month span, there's nothing like actual time to really kick it up a notch.
Failure to Change - Alex from A Clockwork Orange
While the entire plot is focused around getting this violent criminal to change his ways, in the end, he ends up exactly where he started
Confronting Death - Dr. Isak Borg from Wild Strawberries
It is the psychological journey of a man and his self reckoning in his final act. Beginning in a place of guilt and resolving itself in some small amount of solace and acceptance.
Rise to Power - Michael Corleone from The Godfather
From saintly war-hero to family leader of quiet cruelty, it is the slow, seductive corruption of a moral man.
Descent into Madness - Mabel from A Woman Under the Influence
In the beginning, Mabel is perhaps just a little strange but what follows is one of the most brilliantly acted unravellings in the history of cinema.
Rise and Fall - Citizen Kane from Citizen Kane
A monument to an American Icarus, flying too high and lending proof to Fitzgerald's claim that "there are no second acts in American lives."

Watchmojo would have chosen Shrek for #1.
hahaha or Transformers
Would have*
would HAVE!
Have!!!!!
Nah, they gonna choose Darth Vader since they are Star Wars fanboys.
This is the only top 10 series that actually has good reasoning behind every choice.
Right? Instead of most who just say "this is better so it's at this spot", they always give detailed excellent top ten lists
These guys are true cinephiles. I just wish I had the time to watch all the movies on those lists... There are about 50 per video, it's crazy!
It really helps that they give honorable mentions for every spot/category too.
I know right! Finally a list that doesnt just parrot the names popular movies
No
I'm a simple man, I see Alex DeLarge, I click the like button
Then I guess I'm a simple man too, I think he's one of the best characters ever created my brothers! Real horror-show.
wow what a mood
But in the clockwork orange book little Alex does grow up and decide to settle down.....The movie finishes about 3 pages earlier than the book.
Me too 😂💜
Russell Reilly actually it ends where the book ends except there were a few additional pages published only in the UK that covers those events, but most people haven’t read that version and Kubrick himself said that he didn’t know there was an extended version when he made the film.
I never realized that Jules' storyline is the only linear arc in Pulp Fiction. Mind is blown.
The diner scene in Pulp Fiction gives me chills every time, Sam Jackson's delivery is perfect.
All of his deliveries in everything are perfect.
he's perfect in that
+Jim even mace freaking windu?
kaiserhuangful Stop making things up, you heathen.
Samuel Mother Fucking Jackson is a great actor!
Hands-down, this is one of the best channels on CZcams.
very true
These guys literally made a top 10 Westerns video with Star Wars as #1. That alone kicks them out of the top 50!
@@koustavchatterjee8645 one bad video doesn't ruin the entire channel. At least for sensible people
Or one of the worst, if you really think about it.
@@koustavchatterjee8645 link to that video?

I got a few to consider:
Scottie - Vertigo
Private Joker - Full Metal Jacket
Jason Dixon - Three Billboards
Andy Dufrense - Shawshank Redemption
William Munny - Unforgiven
Chiron - Moonlight
The Kids - Stand By Me
YES private joker!
Yea I was going to say Full Metal Jacket too
Really moonlight? That movie is garbage
@@maciek8159 I hope you said that after actually watching it
Davis- 12 Angry Men
in the clockwork orange book, alex actually does become a good person, he wants to be married, he matures basically. the film ending is in the book, but the film implies he cannot be cured, whereas in the book, he is cured, and it is quite inspirational.
A similar deconstruction in an adaptation would be Lav Diaz' somewhat loose adaptation of Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment called Norte, the End of History, in which the protagonist's torment over his intellectually-inspired violent actions causes him to descend even further towards darkness and loss of identity rather than be persuaded to confess and seek redemption.
Meh...he becomes a good guy... That's probably why I don't like that ending...
The french Timelord the ending is less soft than you think, it's written perfectly, you should read the book it is so good and opens your mind.
+DeathCreationist Maybe I should but I feel like in this "universe", being a bad guy is fun and a good thing. So him becoming good is bad, you know ? A bit hard to explain... I had so much fun watching the film (really... not joking...) and I'm sure that is what Kubrick wanted. A dark comedy. Yet, the only funny scene you have are before the Ludovico experiment.
The french Timelord I get what you mean, bad guys are cool, but it's only when they affect you they are suddenly bad and not cool lol.
This video is amazing, but there is a simple mistake when introducing the film Wild Strawberries. The narrator says its #5. The text presented says its #4.
Don't worry. I am a mistake myself.
+Matt Post You're not a mistake because I love you bebe
And then The Godfather is narrated as number 3, then listed as number 5.
Search the word serendipity.
Self-consciously sweet of you
Way to earn yourself a fan club, Matt Post.
We love you.
I think nina's descent into madness in Black Swan should have gotten an honorable mention in #2
i wholeheartedly agree
True actually!
I was waiting for her mention too

@@aslan9334 WatchMojo is made with the sole purpose of making money. There's no soul in their content, only what the analytics tell them Will generate the most views
@@aslan9334 they are totally soulles and tasteless and most of the time they make lists about things that are absolutely uninteresting of impossible to rank in the first place.
You've done cinematography, directing, sound design...but not editing itself. You should do that.
And I'm not talking about moments, I'm talking about how editing can give something to the entire movie.
You should visit Every Frame a Painting, thank me later :D
F for Fake no.1 without a doubt...
Ironically, its another movie directed by Orson Welles :P
couldn't agree more
+Deni Peacemaker What if they collaborated on a top ten?
#1 is Charles Foster Kane, I'm calling it now
I'm not the one to judge a cinefix list but they should have given an HM to John Nash (Russell Crowe) A Beautiful Mind or even Maximus from Gladiator
If someone had to beat T.E Lawrence I'm glad it was Kane.
+VB MUTT def thought John Nash would've been on here but I guess they didn't feature it because he was an actual person? Either way I agree with what you're saying.
How does Maximus have a character arc?
Mark Woollon I mean his STORY has an arc been he's the same guy with the same moral standards the entire time. His allegiances change but because they conflict with his character and mortality. Unless i'm missing something because I haven't seen the movie in a few years.
Still waiting for the "Top 10 so bad that they are good" movies list.
Number one easily the room
Michael Peck I mean, revenge of the Sith is probably 4th in the Saga (Personal Opinion) and The Phantom Menace has some good moments
...like Demolition Man???
@@sharko3211 you know nothing of cinema
Manic Rhymes I’m sorry that my opinion doesn’t match up with yours but don’t insult me because you don’t agree with me. Rather than insulting me how about you present a counter argument?
By far my favorite “reluctant hero” is the underrated performance by Tom Cruise and Rain Man. He goes from a total asshole who only wants to use his brother to gain wealth, to someone who really cares about him. And he does it with such nuance and subtlety that you don’t even find a moment where it changes. But Dustin Hoffman‘s one trick pony took the Oscar. Go figure.
I agree. I think time has corrected that error and Cruise is getting the recognition he deserved.
Yes. It's worth lots and lots.
If I had to add an eleventh category (and I love that each number in all of their lists is more like separate categories as opposed to true rankings but that's a whole different conversation), I would add a category for arcs of healing. Like a character coming to terms with someone's death or other terrible life circumstances. I would nominate the arc of Shin-ae Lee in Secret Sunshine. It's a Korean movie that follows a young widow as she moves to her dead husband's hometown and another tragedy strikes. It doesn't follow the traditional three act narrative structure, but is still incredibly moving. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good arc of a tragic, flawed character.
My top 10 without looking first:
Mulholland Drive - Betty/Dianne
Schindler's List- Oscar
To Kill a Mockingbird- Scout
The Graduate- Benjamin
The Breakfast Club- The whole cast
Requiem for a Dream- Sara
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg- Guy and Genevieve
The Deer Hunter- Michael
Scarface- Tony
La Femme Nakita- Nakita
😎
I also thought of:
• The Beast in Beauty and the Beast
• Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood
• Josh Baskin in Big
• Frank Lucas in American Gangster
• Eve Harrington in All About Eve
• Melvin Udall in As Good As It Gets
Jake Deines Jake Hoyt in Training Day.
Lol Daniel started the movie as a psychopath and ended it as a psychopath. He didn’t change a bit
Aryavir Sangwan flat arc?

Arguably the most flawless character arc of all time but that's tv my friend

Toshiro Mifune in Seven Samurai is my favorite performance of all time. Kikuchiyo is an excellent character. Thanks for giving him props!
I just watched it yesterday. What a beautiful man.
Truly
these Cineflix top 10s are without a dubt the best lists on youtube, well thought out and great subjects.
For the redemption arc, I'm surprised you didn't mention Ebenezer Scrooge.
Yess, I feel like people completely forgot about his arc.
Probably because there’s way to many versions of the tale, that it’s hard to pick one.
@@osmanyousif7849 one book.
My favourite character arc is Lou Bloom from Nightcrawler
that was a disturbingly good movie, honestly. LOL
Love that Barry Lyndon got a shout out. I adore the movie.
Wow. Gena Rowlands. That was a surprising inclusion on the list. Not surprising in that holy hell she nailed that part and it's one of the most harrowing ever to watch, but surprising in that I never thought I'd see a mention of it on CZcams. Gena did an amazing job. And you guys do a great job with your lists.

A very useful video for writers who are just starting out. Great job!
It's funny because in the end of the book A Clockwork Orange, Alex does change
I am SO glad someone else pointed this out lmao
yeah i was wondering the same thing lol
yes the movie left out the last chapter of the book which makes a whole lot of difference in interpretation, but i don't mind because the movie's ending is still great
And it's so important for the message the book is trying to put across.
+João de Arruda Campos Cardoso Only the American version was changed, omitting the last chapter
Thanks for curating the best film lists on the internet. You guys deserve all the praise you can get for crafting not perfect lists but lists that are a thrill and an education to agree, disagree, and lengthen our already multitudinous films-to-see lists with
I love the way you at CineFix talk about cinema. As the art form it is. Not just the franchise driven medium it has become. You make me want to watch every movie on this list (again) because of the way you simply honour them for being the works they are. Really great!
Loved that you included :Grave of the Fireflies" by Miyazaki. It was just for a millisecond but this film is so good. Its one of those few movies where I don't just remember when I watched it for the first time but exactly how I felt during almost every scene
OMG, that pun in Casablanca. As time goes by. (: made me smile for some reason
I think this is a totally engrossing and well presented piece. It makes me want to watch all of these again.
Outstanding list, as always. Loved the Scorcese shoutout.
I absolutely love all your videos! They are so informative and well constructed. I always have a piece of paper out when I'm watching, because I take notes which films I have to watch xD

descent to madness should be Jack Nicholson in the shining
Nikhil Bhagat *Nicholson
That movie was more about writers block

I have IMDB open on another tab everytime I watch a cinefix list and I'm constantly adding more movies to that watchlist! I love you guys, keep up the great work!
Walter White in Breaking Bad for the greatest TV show that showed the rise & fall, a good guy rise to power, and that power consumes him while destroying everything around him.. Would ppl consider that a great character study as well?
They can make a TV show version for that.
I was thinking of that as well, but they're only talking about movies here so...
Lisa Galarza yea, I know.. just thought it was a good comparison- if they ever have one on TV shows, that would be a good one to add.
Breaking Bad was not about a raise and fall it was about an identity crisis. At the very end of the series Walter admitted that he liked being a drug king pin confirming that Heisenberg, his alter ego, was who he really was or wanted to be all along.
abc64pan I can agree, but we did see the rise and fall of a character in that, as well, am I right?
Counterpoint: I still enjoy Watchmojo. Yes, when it comes to dissecting movies, there is really no comparison between Watchmojo and Cinefix, but that's like comparing the clothing selections of Wal Mart to that of Macy's. Of course Macy's is better, but you can't also buy all your groceries at Macy's. Watchmojo has a good selection of lists that have nothing to to with movies.
Feel the Bern 2020! I actually completely agree with you
Hell yeah well put
Wow.. I A..greE wIth yoU surprisingly
I agree that Watchmojo have a wider variety, but it is so quantity over quality with them
I enjoy both too!
I would say chicken Brent from cloudy with a chance of meatballs
You guys don't just make lists; you elegantly and masterfully break down each film in a way that scholars would envy. Everyone that does these CineFix videos obviously has some training in true film critiquing. Thank for another wonderful video.
Great list and very good #10 pick. Seven Samurai is in my opinion one of the greatest films ever made.
Nice list. It kind of exposes what a lack of dynamic women we have in film though, doesn't it?
get chloe
In some movies they are but otherwise they are just supporting characters quite unfortanley
In my own comment I suggested Dogville and Dancer in the Dark which both have female protagonists and I saw someone else rightfully mentioning Black Swan which also made me think of Girl, Interrupted for even two female main characters!
@@maocharlisme oh! golly! two!! in one movie? a miracle!! lmao
Truth, about women in film. But I have a few screenplays that might change all of that.
this is a great video thanks for posting this!
This video introduced me to Five Easy Pieces (I luckily thought to mute the video for the spoiler parts of the analysis) and it’s now one of my all time favorite films, so thank you so much for introducing it to me. As a film lover, Cinefix is one of my favorite channels here on CZcams and I always light up when I see a new video in my inbox. Love you guys ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
Edward Norton's character arc as Tyler Durden is my personal favorite. I also think Donnie Darko and Christopher McCandless are two very underrated choices as well.
Man, I get chills everytime I watch that final scene with Jules.
"The truth is - *you're* the *weak*, and I'm the tyranny of evil men..." Oo, wow.
What makes it even more intense is the subtext when he says "I'm trying Ringo; I'm trying real hard..." (to not shoot yo' ass right now)
lol, at least that's what I got out of it.
I've been enjoying your take on cinema goodness for years, thank you so much for sharing
keep up the stellar work, cinefix.
First of all, great list. One you missed for reluctant hero; Children of Men
Boyhood's fault is that too many people saw it. It fell into the mainstream. Cuz it is similar to Before Sunrise in that, nothing really happens, nothing overly out of the ordinary. I love both but I think that Before Sunrise gets a lot less hate cuz lesser people saw it. It is possible that I am overestimating internet hate.
awesome420ication i was stoked for it but i felt like the acting was atrocious.
Very well researched, snd fitting choices 🤗
I found out so many new films with all your honourable mentions! I like your top 50!
The soldiers from Apocalypse Now. Evolution of the psyche facing war-made horror.
This is years old at this point, but I can’t see something praising apocalypse now and not visibly agree with it :/
Mr Fox on Fastic mr Fox would have been nice to see on the list too :0
This needed more Wes Anderson. Both Max Fischer and Royal Tenenbaum are better characters with better arcs than Jules from Pulp Fiction.
yess!!
hmmm. I'd be hesitant to agree, but Jules deserves a spot simply for how iconic his lines are and how much of a likeable character he is, without even considering his moral transformation.
+theCreator How iconic and likeable a character isn't relevant to this list though
Wow best list I've seen on this chanell. Very cool
"And as time goes by..." Great choice of words. 👍🏻
Gena Rowlands gave the most underrated performance of any actress I have ever seen in "A Woman Under the Influence". Maybe a Thalberg someday...?

Damn, these videos are so well done. 👏🏼
this is probably the video i watch the most while scripting my first movie and it's helping a lot, all of your vids are, keep up the great work! i am apssionate about joseph campbell's hero's journey, chris volger's as far as movies are concerned, and have studied and worked on it loads in the past. Wow, Seven Samurai and Citizen Kane on a Cinefix list. Never saw that coming...
Citizen kane is one of the best films ever made
The first the came to mind for impending death was Johnny Depp from Dead Man. Give Jarmush some love!
Lovely list, as always. But I am surprised how the list missed, and surprisingly, I don't see many people mentioning it, the category of a villain/antagonist. There are villains who have had wonderful arcs, and should have been a wonderful point to explore.
I believe you should have included the Clint Eastwood character from Gran Torino... his "evolution" was pretty heart warming and to my opinion ,masterfully presented !!!
awesome list by the way !
Hunter x Hunter: Gon and Meruems opposed chareckter developments from human to monster and vice versa
The Chimera Ant Arc is probably the greatest manga/anime of all time. Berserk's Golden Age Arc is just as fantastic
A new addition to this list would be Dixson from Three Billboards
I have never seen Casablanca all the way through. I try to stay away from movies that have what I would see as an unhappy ending. This is the first time I ever heard it explained in a way that makes me understand why he tells her to go, and why she does. Wow. Thanks.
Patricia Arquete's monologue in Boyhood gave me chills the first time I saw it. Amazing character development through the movie...
I'm glad You included wild strawberries
Haha 4:40: "... as time goes by..." -- I see what you did there ;)
Love this list !!! See how much funny the comic acts gets when it hits right on the issue of its time. I can't imagine how high the hype might've gotten when the "Citizen Kane" got released, involving the buzz surrounding William Randolph.

12:50 what about Scarface? It shouldn't have taken the #1 spot, but should've been at least mentioned.
Scarface is the poorman's Godfather
+Loic James McKeever yeah, pretty much.
Al Pacino's character is pretty one-note throughout the movie...he doesn't change, his circumstances do.
+Culprit LA Well, throughout the movie he gradually becomes more selfish and obsessed with money.
he's completely selfish and obsessed with obtaining money and status early on...the only thing that changes is that he actually does get those things that bring about his downfall. He's the same kind of a guy he was from the start
Failed to mention Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood for #1 spot
I'm just very happy you went with the right choice and picked Michael Corleone. The ending of The Godfather still gives me chills.
Spot on! That's why CineFix is so revered!
No REQUIEM FOR A DREAM?? Come on.
This list seems more predictable than Cinefix's usual habit of more eclectic lists, but I think that is a reflection on how large of a role Character Arc plays in how universally a movie will be understood and appreciated.
Cinefix's lists are still opinions but I know that they had a lot of research in order to decide on which spot each movie takes. This isn't a Top 10- List, each spot is based on a topic and that makes an unbiased opinion, and that's why Cinefix makes one of the best movie-based channels I've seen on CZcams.
You played the entire scene from Pulp Fiction...great!
So happy to see chronicle on this list, the film is seriously underrated but superbly written, acted and filmed
