- The city of Ghent is located in the northwest of Belgium, at the confluence of two rivers. During the Middle Ages, Ghent was a wealthy and prominent city-state mainly due to the manufacturing of cloth made from English wool. Today, it’s a university town and cultural hub full of amazing architecture, such as the 12th-century Gravensteen castle. From towering churches to detailed statues and peaceful canals, there are hundreds of charming views to take in here. In this video, we’ll break down the 7 best things to do in Ghent.
7. Try local delicacies
Try waffles, french fries, and Belgian Beer (Delirium Tremens is the local one), “Gentse Neusjes” and a “Julientje”.
☑️ Guided City Tour with Food and Drink Tastings:

6. Walk around Patershol
With unique architecture, well-preserved cobbled streets, and serene views of the canals, this is a must-visit spot.
5. Free walking tour of the historic center
Starting at Hostel Uppelink next to the Saint Michaels Bridge, you’ll learn all about the history of Ghent. Including how Ghent came to be one of the largest towns in Northern Europe in the 13th century.
☑️ Book free walking tour here: www.freetour.com/gent/gent-fr...
4. Visit the Castle of the Counts (Gravensteen Castle)
The castle is a museum and a major landmark in the city. We highly recommend doing the audio-tour that is both funny and interesting.
3. Chill at Graslei or Korenlei
Located directly across from each other on opposite sides of the river, these two quays are part of the medieval port that hosted ships since the 11th century.
2. Enjoy The Festivities
Must-do: the Christmas market in December or the Gentse Feesten at the end of July
1. Kayak or boat tour on the river
To rent a kayak, head to Hostel Uppelink.
The other option is to do a 50-minute guided boat tour. Here, you’ll get a short history lesson while you admire Ghents most famous sights from a unique view on the water.

From Ghent train station is it near to walk to these spots ?
You can walk to the center from Gent-St Pieters train station, it takes about 30 mins though. It’s not very close but you can also take a tram or bus if you don’t feel like walking! We usually walk as it’s a nice city to get around on foot
@@worldwildhearts will bring my old mom in winter so maybe we will take trams:) thanks
The traffic is so smooth. This is heaven for pedestrians!!
I spent a month in Belgium last summer, and Ghent was my favorite town. Great video.
Yeah we also love it! Hope you made it to the Gentse Feesten while you were there 😉
Wow, you just sold us on Ghent. Were looking at Brussels or Ghent for a day, and after viewing you video the decision of Ghent was easily made. Thanks.
Haha nice! hope you had a good time!
Thanks for the informative and short vlog, I also appreciate that the camera is not solely fixated on your faces the whole time! So many ppl do this? 😑😁
Thanks! And haha yes that’s definitely something you see a lot on YT 😂
Gorgeous city.
Really loved this vlog!!! Information and nice video 😍
Thanks!
Thanks for this! Can't wait to be there!
Enjoy! Ghent is awesome!
i am from ghent i thought it was really nice how he explains what there is to do there is much more to do than that at the moment we are having the gentse feesten worth experiencing
Yes we love the Gentse Feesten! Sad to miss it this year, but last year we were there 😃
Thank you both very much for this and all of your videos. I am traveling to Belgium in April this year, and I have been watching a lot of your videos to get some great ideas on what to do while I am there. Your videos are always so helpful. They are detailed, and I like how you actually show on the video what to do, and not just say it. The visual aspect is so helpful to me. I greatly appreciate the work that you all do in putting these videos together, along with the descriptions on this page and the links for the tours, etc. It is just awesome of you both to do what you do!!! I want to be a world traveler, and plan on doing much more traveling starting this April. That is my goal! Thank you again!!!
Have a good trip!
Thanks for sharing ❤
No problem! Glad you enjoyed it ☺️
Going fir Christmas and new year. Thanks for the pointers guys
That's an awesome time to visit! Lots of atmosphere around the city... especially with the Christmas market!
Thank you for great content
Glad you enjoy it!
6:38 i used to sit right there in those benches to have lunch in my high school years, im obviously sick and tiered of seeing Ghent since went there all the time for school and other stuff but im trying to fall in love with it again, this video helps
🤣 I can totally understand your reasons!! But it’s a beautiful city from a tourist perspective 😄
Amazing ♥ Thank you
Thank you!
Lucky I have work related trips to Gent 1-2 times a year. Amazing place!
That’s awesome!! ☺️
This seems to be a very interesting place, I hope I can visit sometime in the future. Seeing and sharing places like this is why I love traveling and make videos so much! And please keep up the great job! Subscribed!!
Thanks for the support! It's a really great place... a hidden gem because so many people skip it!!
Thank you
thanks for visiting my hometown! Glad you liked it, who wouldn't? 🙂
We love it! We try to visit every time we're back in Belgium
❤@@worldwildhearts
Nicely done. You have a very kind voice.
Thank you!
The Ghent Altarpiece is easily the most celebrated painting in Belgium, and one of the most celebrated in Europe. Oil painting
was invented by the van Eck workshop and its leader Jan van Eck.
Yes it's very known! Even learned about it in high school
Van Eyck, you forgot the Y 🙂As a citizen from Gent, always glad to help!
@@johanlotigiers You are fortunate to live in such an historic/cultural city with moderate temperatures, 68 degrees F. Nashville, Tennessee where I live by contrast barely has a culture at all unless you like country and western music and the temperature here in 90 degrees today and has been like that for months. I'll be back to Europe soon, lived there for 33 years! Best wishes
Oooooh, but I love country. Also, in our family we are big Elvis fans! Have fun when you travel over here.... and take care!
Hey great video, I would love to know about any recommendations for stay in Ghent. Thank you!
Thanks for watching! We highlight a few good places to stay in our blog: www.worldwildhearts.com/post/ghent-belgium

*angry French noises in the background*
Super
Thanks
The Bellfry isn't a church. It's a tower build by the guilds and city counsil to house and represent the rights given to the city. City guards stood watch above the tower to sound the alarm for fires and inviding armies.
I guess you’re right! Should’ve said “the three medieval towers” instead of churches
My City😍😍😍😍
Lovely 😍😍
No no no it’s my city :p
Don't you need a boyfriend? 😅
Was missing 'de Vlaamse accent'! (used to live in ghent for 10 years in the past). Great video!
Thanks! 😃 Lovely city..
I've been to Ghent, KY. Almost as nice.
We didn't know there was another place called Ghent! 😅
❤❤❤
Belgium has three official languages. Dutch is spoken by 60% of the population, French 39%, and German 1%
Hi! Thanks for this video. Can you tell me the name of the place where you had the julientje? Thanks!
Hi! I think we had it in Frituur Tartaar (center of Ghent). Though the owner made is especially for us as we asked him! It wasn’t on his menu. In most frituur’s you’ll find it though. It was invented in “De Gouden Saté” and named after the former owner Julien. They changed owners now but they’re still THE place to go for a julientje (it’s located in the party street of Ghent - overpoort)
@@worldwildhearts Thank you for your generous spirit and for this information. We enjoy your videos very much!
Thanks! ☺️
We’re going in June. My question is, should be stay in Brussels and day-trip to Bruges and Ghent, or stay in one of those cities and day trip to the other (and perhaps more)?
If you have the time we’d highly recommend staying a night or two in Bruges and / or Ghent! Both have a lovely atmosphere and we really like the evening lights 😍 they’re smaller but also cozier than Brussels!
@@worldwildheartswe are staying in Belgium leaving in two weeks. How far is train ride to Ghent ?
I've been here and did almost everything mentioned except for the grafiti walk
Awesome! 🙏
Please do Antwerp :)
We'll actually make a video soon! Leaving to Belgium tomorrow for about 6 weeks ;)
Nice video but, sadly you didn't said the places where you eat the meal! This would be helpful for a tourist, particularly in places like these.
You can find the places to eat in our blog post (you can find the link in the description under the video )

@@worldwildhearts Good to know as I’ll be there this fall and would prefer an English speaking tour. Thanks!

Great! Enjoy Ghent :) It's a beautiful city
Is Dutch spoken here?

48 hours in Ghent enough?
Yes definitely a good amount of time to see the highlights and take in the atmosphere of the city ☺️
Would you live there for a month? :D
of course! It's a fun and vibrant city, especially during the summer! :)
Hii. I am Indian
Hi there! Welcome to Ghent in Belgium 🇧🇪
The way you say quay noooooooooo my dude. It's pronounced like key!
That’s awesome to hear! The cuisine in Belgium is delicious. Next time you should also visit Brussels or some places in the south of Belgium (such as Dinant, Bouillon, or Durbuy)!
Thanks for the advice. Greetings
Kanker stad!
I'm from Ghent it's just boring here😮💨
😢 we like Ghent
Euhh pardon!!!!! Boring!!! You are not from Ghent!!!!
