Great job! We are learning this together. Can't believe how smooth your graphs are versus mine. Basically mine is the angry dragon. This really shows off a great quality room build and dampening.
I learned some crazy things with my acoustic panels. A) They do not remove the frequency I thought they did. B) They change pressure in a space "How I do not know!" What you feel isn't measured on a graph. C) Some panels are mostly show in certain places per REW. D) Room acoustics can change drastically in certain frequencies when adjusting your sound levels. "If an area is fighting each other, sound level change can dominate another" E) Each place in your theater has a different curve. F) Never trust a last minute setting change without checking it.
Congratulations, Youthman! People like your down to earth presentations and easy to understand explanations. Thanks for keeping this hobby FUN!! 😀👍
Thanks Russell, I want to make sure anyone can follow along and do the same.
That was a very straight forward and easy to follow demonstration on how to use that function of REW and how subwoofer placement/phase can really effect sound! Thanks Youthman! Can't wait to start diving into REW myself...
Thanks bro! I’ve got a lot to learn but enjoy sharing what I do learn for the benefit of others
Thanks for taking the time to make this video! Very interesting to see how the frequency response changes when subs are moved around.
Glad you found the video helpful
The guys at SVS just gave you a very positive comment and shout out during a live Facebook session on your video about dialing in a subwoofer! Congrats!
Thanks I was playing cards with my 96yr old grandmother. I’ll check out the video tonight. Thx for the heads up
I’m new to the channel and really have enjoyed watching the new and old videos... I’ve learned a lot. 👌🏼
Thanks! Glad you are finding value in the content
Congratulations Youthman!! thanks for all the educational content for all types of audio hobbyist
Thank you kindly.
Hi there Youthman. It’s wonderful that you’re taking us all through the REW process. I have two svs pb-4000’s and I am presently moving them around my room trying to find the optimal location. My room is roughly 24 x 11 and I find that I’m not getting that feel it in your chest impact I should be getting. Don’t get me wrong I’m happy with them and they shake my room when needed. I must have a null at my main seating location because while the subs are active and my room is pressurizing I just don’t feel it in my seat like I should. I am definitely going to play with the phase adjustments and go from there. But I will definitely be purchasing a mic along with the REW program. My question is this - do I run Audyssey first and then run REW after, or REW first followed by Audyssey. I absolutely love your videos Youthman! It’s wonderful that we all can share our experiences with home theater and at the same time gather useful informative information. keep them coming.
Congrats Youthman! Thank you for your great videos!
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoy the content
Hello again youthman. Question: I got two SPL-120s do you have those set at LFE the low pass filter?
Got my downfire in the corner funny to say but it's the best position I can get in this room and he handle every Szene so powerful love it
Great test! Did you set the subs distances in the receiver after changing each position? It's essential to prevent phase issues.
I’m about to go through this process with my two r-115SWs. Got the mic you recommended. My room is not a regular shape, so I don’t know if the standard “go-too” positions will work. Do you think I should just start measuring different spots with one sub and then start playing around with the top spots? Or is that a fools errand because how one sub measured by itself may become irrelevant once the second is introduced and so I have to be playing with both to have any real indication? Nothing I have read has been clear on this. Thanks youthman.
Hi Youhtman, juz out of curiousity.. have u tried to run REW on both sub simultaneously and wonder the result..
and if possible, using one subout thru splitter then anither test using the two separate subout. ( planning on buying another for dual sub set up )..
Hey I ordered the pb4000 what do u think of that subwoofer
I like that 4 subwoofer senario. Got to say Man your theater room Off the Chain . WOW ...as always Great content, thanks !
Thank you sir
Awesome, Congrats on the subscribers!
Thank you

You the TRUE BOSS 4 me men, I can't wait to meet you
Congrats on your increasing subscriber count Youthman. You give an easy to follow guide to everything without trying to be over the top in your delivery. It would be great to see some reviews of more non standard subs in your room as a lot of us have become accustomed to your setup. Maybe something along the lines of transmission line or Tapped Horns would be informative, especially to compare them to your current reference subs. Maybe you could do a shout out to your subscribers to borrow something for a few days. Keep up the great work and you've inspired me to also get into REW. Cheers
Thank you for the kind words Andrew. So what are you willing to send me so I can tell everybody how awesome you are? LOL
Just kidding bro. I actually have been in contact with JTR. They have some gear that is quite different than typical manufacturers. Tapped horns would be cool but aren’t most of them pretty massive? I know Danley makes them and they are 5’ high 😀
I’m not worried about size but I’m limited in actual floor space due to theater seating and my front cabinet being 4’ deep
Totally agree Youthman. You've also got a very nice looking space, so no need to mess that up with an overly large sub that would look out of place. I'm really chuffed that you've taken the time to message me. Thanks again and keep up the excellent videos.
The Past 2 videos prompted me to order the Umik. It will arrive on Monday.
Cool. I hope my videos will make it much easier for you than it was for me trying to learn on my own.
Great video on sub placement. So many people place subs in corners but as you have shown it doesn't always work in every room. I would say that trying to adjust phase on one sub when both are on the same plane or distance from the listener would totally give suckout. When it was behind the seat on the side, I would guess that it would probably take a phase of about 60 to 80 degrees (only a guess without measurements). Tough to adjust or fine tune with a 0 or 180 only degree switch verses a phase switch with variable adjustments. Like using a blunt adjustment. That's where Klipsch saves some money. Still a great bang for the buck.
Thanks. This was my first attempt at measuring How phase effects a speakers performance. I am curious now if phase will help with the PB3000 since it has variable phase
Think its time for a mini dsp, it opens up so many options when it comes to multiple sub and can flatten some of the peaks too, best addition to my setup yet,
Glad to see your channel do so well you deserve it :)
Thanks James. I have a miniDSP 2x4 HD. Wish you were local to help walk me through the basics.
Ah sure it’s a small world now with social media how times have changed, I must confess the best addition was really moving from xt to xt32, that really tame the bass in my setup and made it really tight, the dsp was just the icing on the cake, I’m sure you read your fare share of guides it’s just trial and error after that, the best tips I can give you is not to boost any peaks and use as few Ed as possible, the dsp website has good guides on dual subs, I just got the one sub sb2000 as it’s a smallish room and only need one sweet spot, your room is a lot more difficult gene from aduiaholics got his room perfect through Dsp
Slainte from 🇮🇪
Edit I meant don’t boost the nulls
Hi Youthman can you please send me the link on setting my test tones for my new marantz, I cant find the video I seen you with your Sound Meter setting all your speakers to 75db I believe can you send me link. Also when I play my music in stereo after I get pass 69% it seems to lose volume and bass and I have the Emotiva I just received few days ago I have 30 days with it; Should I have purchase the Parasound Amp A 51 Amplifier I was told it is more dynamic please I have a few days left with this emotiva 5 gen 3 amp I can spare a few more dollars for a better sound please respond.
Glad you are doing this with two Klipsch 115SW's as I have two. Great tutorial on how to get the software, mic and play with it at home. Any chance you could do a projector calibration? Now that would be cool
Thanks. I use WOW Disk to calibrate my projector. Not much of a tutorial as the disk walks you through step by step how to calibrate.
just purchased the umik 1 and downloaded REW, set up the calibration files etc and started doing some sweeps with my dual sb-2000 stacked behind a corner settee (protected from kids and animals) in an 8x4 meter long L shaped room where my listening position is on the back wall central in the room. relevant to this i found that movies were great with the subs but music lower octaves wasnt. The results showed me a null inbetween 27 and 32 hz (which I have plans to address)but a huge peak at 16.8hz. So just for fun i did some tests going up in increments of 3db and at 113 db at 16.8hz no signs of decay (10hz is now approaching 100db) at 115db at 16.8hz the line at 10hz started to show decay. I was suprised at the results so thought I would share, in addition to this ive ordered a db meter just to confirm (to myself) the accuracy
Also, congrats man. Amazing content as always.
Thanks!
Hey Michael, have a RadioShack level meter like yours. Can I use it instead of the UMIK-1 for REW subwoofer measurements.
I don’t believe so. Main thing is the UMIK-1 has a calibration file.
Hai...youthman video...amazing ...
Thanks
Great video, as usually. Thanks for the fase test. How can you improve that drop? It seems like, no matter where did you placed them, that drop is still there. What is that fase? What does it do?
I can’t figure out what is causing the null in my room. No matter what combo or location, it’s still there
@@Youthman Did you have the same nul, with the SVS sub as well?
I would like to see a video using this software to measure your big svs subs where they are placed now behind the screen
Me too David. I just need to get finished with the Reference Premiere Videos so I can have room to get to them 😂
Very good presentation. Is that all sub and positions has been done Audyssey dual EQ sub equalisation before taking REW measurements.I have never done REW ,but I have tried various sub positions in my room and decided based on my ears. But this REW is very interesting and makes me curious to do myself.😊
You want to turn off Audyssey, use REW to help you find the best placement and then run Audyssey to make the small adjustments to improve the frequency response.
@@Youthman Yes got it ,that was the right procedure. But curious to know how far that Audyssey dual sub equalisation can fine tune the variations.
What subwoofer would you get, the Klipsch R-115SW or the SVS Pb-3000?
Look at 2 videos back. He does the REW of both subs and explains the benifits. Depends on budget, go whichever one you can do dual. Higher budget, dual SVS, lower budget dual Klipsh.
Very informative..
Thanks
Btw...did you try to place the two subs inside the front L/R Speakers? Corner loading is not always the right position.
My Room works best with Diagonal placement.
Yes, most of the time I had them flanking the center
@youthman what exactly would the minidsp 2x4’s be used for exactly? Is it a necessary piece of equipment?
In a nutshell, it’s an EQ that sits between your receiver and your subs. After running REW, you send that data to the MiniDSP and it applies DSP to the signal before its sent to the subwoofers.
It’s not necessary, but everyone that has owned one says it’s an incredible tool. I just need to learn how to use it before I can implement it into my system
Youthman thank for getting back to me so quickly. Interesting, I might just pick one up then and tinker with it. Maybe you have already but have you created or thought of creating a video running your subs that sit behind your screen through REW? I’d be interested to see what results you get
@@bensb166 I have various videos on my channel showing REW results but I'm not sure if / what videos I have measuring them behind the screen.
Forgot to ask you before. Do you have your front left and right plugged in when doing this test? I found mine were cancelling out some of the bass from my SVS.
Yes they are plugged in but think of it this way...If you calibrate your subs without means, and then add means you’re not getting the real picture. What if by adding the mains caused a null? You would never know it unless you measure it with them playing
@@Youthman That's what I figured. Just wanted to confirm.
@@Youthman That's what I figured. Just wanted to confirm.
What about front right corner and real left corner . That seems to be a popular placement as well
I don’t have that option. No room in rear left due to rear seats. Can’t do rear right due to entrance to the room.
Unfortunately, stacking my subs is the only way I can have duel subs in my condo. I have my 10' ich 100 watt ported front firing sitting on top of my 10' 100 watt Dayton Audio 1000l slim which is down firing in that position. I would be curious how that would measure. Ever test stacked subs?
Stacked subs will typically give you 6dB more output. Other than that, it shouldn’t change the frequency response
@@Youthman Thanks for your reply. Perhaps stacking a down firing and front firing sub like I'm doing may produce different frequencies? Being the down firing is getting reflected right off the bat.
The phase setting should only be changed in the first and second configuration with a sub in the front and one in the back. The first setup the sub on the sidewalk was at an 90 angle to the sub in the front. The available adjustment on the klipsch won’t help much in that case. The second had the subs facing each other but that placement put them 180 degrees out of phase with changing any settings, resulting in loss in output. In that positioning one should have been set to zero and the other to 180 so they could effectively work together. Also timing needs to be adjusted. If the subs are sharing the same wall as in the front the typically the phase on both subs should be the same. When there is one sub in the front and one in the rear then phase on one should be changed to prevent cancellations. Otherwise they are fighting each other rather than working together. The last positioning of the subs should have had both subs either set at zero or 180. Gene explains it better than I can here. czcams.com/video/8XE1JsfqKtA/video.html
Actually, just stating a phase change isn't as easy as that. REW can tell you if it does more harm that good. Each room is different. I have a front and rear placement, and upon changing I created a big null at 50-80 hz. Ended up having to change it back again to "0".
Youthman is doing some good stuff with REW as the tools reveal so much that was almost 6th sense and preference before.
Depends on the room. I have two R-115SW’s, one in the front and one in the back. I did several measurements and the phase on both in MY ROOM works best at 0.
Having that 3rd ported sub in the room and not powered will act like a bass trap near the port feq
Great video. Basically, speaking. We are all throwing darts in the dark without REW. 😉
I’m kind of seeing it that way. I didn’t want to spend more money on a microphone LOL but after buying it, I finding just how handy it is. I put a cheaper alternative as well in the description.
Love your videos! Oh ya! Charge your phone. 🤣
Haha my phone stays on low charge
So you just place your subs to random positions until you get good results with Room EQ? That's a lot of lifting.... I can't possibly do that with my dual Klipsch SPL-150, unless I don't need my back anymore
Get a friend to help you.
Hey there used man have a quick question for you. What kind of projector do you have and how large is your screen? Getting into home theater in terms of larger screen I have all of the audio. I'm really looking at and considering the Optima UHD 60.
James Wiens watch his 7.2.4 Dolby Atmos 4K home theatre tour! You'll find all the information you need there😁
Kristoffer is correct. Here is the video - czcams.com/video/9rQxNd1Lf38/video.html
Each sub, a third of the way down each sidewall facing each other should work well.
Rew software is using for only placements or calibration too?
REW allows you to see what is going on in your room. If you’re subwoofer has built in PEQ (like many SVS subwoofers), you can use that to make adjustments to help flatten your frequency response.
The best method is to use a miniDSP 2x4HD with REW - czcams.com/video/_ZxbM_s4vh0/video.html
@@Youthman what about rest of the speakers sir? That is also only to see how the frequency response or we can change eq through rew?
REW only takes measurements. You will need an external DSP
@@Youthman thanks sir
we use dynamic eq on or off ? Whats your suggestion to this... Is it good for sound and pls don't get angry for too many questions 🙂
Nice vid. Putting aside the graph...how does it sound. Do you really notice a lack of bass presence in the frequency range where there is a null that you mentioned? If not why worry.
Where you have the mic placed. Is that where you normally sit? It’s hard to please all pertaining to seating arrangement.
If you’re going to say yes related to bass null with your own ears then here are my observations:
1. Your subs are possibly too big and it’s questionable you even need two for your room size. In the vid those are Klipsche? In the description link it says you have SVS PB16? Do you like deep bass? I think we all do. It seems in the graph your deep sub 30hz is good but there is a dip at the range you mentioned which seems to bother you.
2. How does the graph look with no subs. You have towers with 2 8 inch driver each? That in itself should produce solid bass down to 30-40hz easy. If you’re not getting the bass perhaps look into a separate power amp to drive the front mains. If you are then maybe you only need one sub.
3. The only real options for your sub placement is front next to center channel like where you have at the beginning or perhaps right corner rear or left corner rear? You should consider 45 degree angle too not 90 degree for right or left rear.
Nice set up. 👍
This video is almost 2 years old and those R-115SW were only in for review for about a month. I had sold my (4) Klipsch RSW-15's to upgrade do (2) SVS PB16's, then sold them to upgrade to (2) JTR Captivator RS2's. I'm now flat down to 8Hz using a miniDSP - czcams.com/video/CR27rm_G-AA/video.html
Put your sub facing the front wall around 1 inch away from it and flip polarity. And locate 2 subs in the corners like that
I don’t have corners available. My subs have grown quite a bit since this video
both out of phase is the same as both in phase, you needed to try putting the other one out of phase,
In position 3, you had speakers in front of the left sub. Wouldn’t that mess with the speakers output reaching the mic.
Honestly I’m not sure. Guess there is one way to find out. Could easily move the towers out of the way to see if that is what caused the crazy Grand Canyon lol
Pawnagraphic to answer your question, no. Subwoofer frequencies are omnidirectional unlike frequencies that emit from midrange and tweeter drivers.
If subwoofers were truly omnidirectional, it really shouldn’t matter where you place it, because the sound and frequency would be the same in any position, wouldn’t it?
Youthman this is where variable phase option comes in extremely handy. Those placement recommendations are taking advantage of boundary gains in the room by placing the sub on actual walls. The problem your front and rear positioning aren’t truly front and rear of the room. That could be attributing to the loss in output but as I said earlier time alignment also needs to be done. The varying distances between the mic and subs will mess up readings as well. Proper delay needs to be added to ensure the sound from each sub reaches the mic at the same time or cancellations will occur as well. Proper placement of the sub via SPL meter LFE content should be done first to find the best placement locations otherwise you end up doing more work than necessary and cheating yourself of output due to the poor placement.
If I’m incorrect, please explain
When you move one to the back put one on 180 and the other on O that's when one sub Is up front and one sub is in the back of the room
Gotcha. That makes sense. I have never really used phase. I did try changing it when I was playing around with one sub on the rear riser but don’t recall it making any difference (at least positive)
Ok and good Job with them in the same phase the sound waves cancel out each other when you move the sub front to back
Ayyy. FIRST! This is my first time commenting FIRST on a popular channel *tears up* (Great job btw!)
CONGRATS! Just want to say you rock FinnishArmy! Have a great weekend
Youthman thank :) I try to comment on all your new videos!
Thank you! I truly do appreciate the interaction and feedback.
My subwoofer is placed in the corner and the bass is so much better than when it was in the front center.
You can also play with the subwoofer distance in your receiver. Even a small bump like 2 - 3 feet can have a good effect on smoothing out the curves. Something that is also important is measuring speaker + sub and checking the integration. Sometimes 100hz gives smooth response while 80hz may give you dips.
Thx for the tip
You should try Dirac Live.
That's the best software to adapt every single speaker.
And you can change the curves the way you like to have it stalled in by a filter.
Not only the frequency but also the impuls you can measure it for your room.
When you hear the difference you never wanna go back again.
It change every single measurement you made before.
Try it for yourself.
I will get the opportunity when I review the Monoprice HTP-1
My best placement is in my cupboard
Never a corner!
Apparently not 😂
www.acousticfields.com/why-you-should-never-place-subwoofers-in-your-corners/
Although, I don't fully agree with this guy on multiple subs being bad, provided the placement makes them work right. Something you are actively evaluating. If you have the money for two, it's not bad!
