    Just spent a whole afternoon listening to every version of this, for about the 10th time. This is my favourite. Always remember that in *Saul* it depicted the awfulness of mass death in war, not one person's funeral march.

    Just listened to this performance after listening to Stokowski's lush Late Romantic orchestration in order to compare that with what Handel himself wrote. Stokowski gilded the lily here. Handel stands on his own magnificently.

    • @shaunmcdonough9016
      @shaunmcdonough9016 Před 5 lety +2

      Stokowski over gilded the lily and really detracted from the beauty of this great piece. Handel's great piece stands much better on its own so performances that stay truer to his vision are always better.

    What a WONDERFUL comment, Pauline. It would be plagiaristic of me to imitate you, so I refrain out of respect. I would add, if I may, that what grabs me is the appropriately sour tone of the trombones/sackbuts. No one else gets even close. As for the flutes, appropriately, again, mournful, are there really 4 flute parts in the original, or has Arman doubled them? In the circumstances, perfectly legitimate.
