I might be wrong, but to me, it seems like they trimmed it to be able to possibly fit it in a future PS5 Slim, and also, so they can have more shared parts between the different versions in the future, to reduce production costs... But i do agree with the fact that the space seems a little bit wasted, although, that does seem to help with the airflow and better cooling of the console...

The new plastic fins on the chassis are probably channels for airflow when the PS5 is put back together. They probably studied the airflow inside the console and those fins help to direct the hot air to the outside of the console. I would say that it is ok to decrease the size of the heatsink as long as the air flows through it and cools the console adequately.

Smaller main PCB creating lower resistance so less current to run is my guess. Less beefy power delivery etc all adding up to 10% less power draw so less heat to remove again adding to efficiency. It will also make it cheaper to build, more boards cut from a sheet etc. Makes the price height more galling. I'd like to see the quality/thickness of the PCB, if they've cheapened out there as well then I would personally avoid this model because that is what caused the reliability issues (despite MS's claims) with the 360, the cheap board they used flexed under heat damaging components, in the case of the 360 causing a power fluctuation in one of the chips causing it to fail. I have no doubt you are right about the placement of the fins, it's a simple way to improve air flow and reinforce the structure at no extra cost other than the new injection moulds at the plastic factory.

If you look at their position, if they just put in two fans above and below the heat pipe arrangement, aiming towards the back, that would dramatically reduce the overflow of heat coming off that CPU/GPU/BIOS/Storage block section. Especially as those pipes just transfer it all over the place. That's definitely as you said to alleviate some of that excess heat transferring before it circles over other parts of the board.

Few issues with the testing methods (which can be improved):
    - Noise level is depended on the distance. Hold it closer and it will be louder. In theory, 2 times further away is -3dB. So don't hold it to close (it is not a mic), but a couple of inches. Try 6 inches, it is al you need (that's what she said).
    - also always measure your ground noise level. 45dB in a 20dB room is audible. 45dB in a 40dB room isn't. To a certain point, noise perception is relative. People with quiet rooms at home will hear the PS5.
    - The temperature of the heat sink is not interesting. High temperature of the heat sink could mean, it transports the heat very well from the SOC to the air (=good heat sink), but a high temperature could also mean the SOC is very hot and the heat sink does cool enough (=bad heat sink). The only interesting temp is the temp of the SOC itself (by using a probe in between the heat sink and the SOC)
    - A FLIR isn't precise in measuring the temperature. A FLIR measures the infrared non visible light. Infrared is an indicator of temperature, but is definitely not perfect. Light can reflect of surfaces, so the temperature you are measuring could be reflected IR of another object. Dark object reflect much less IR than light objects. Also dark object emits more IR than light object. This is basic optica! FLIR only gives a good indication of temperature. It gives on indication of which part is hotter and which is colder.
    - I don't know if this is possible with your FLIR, but try to fix values (some can). Don't put white on highest temperature, but put it on a fix temp like 65°C and put blue on like 25°C. Much more easy to compare between images...
    - The FLIR was still useful in your video. You said that the heat was emitted top to bottom, which is a correct useful statement.
    Thanks for this video!

Hey austin im in tech. The relayout from the board probably used more efficient components, which result in lower power loss = better thermals. Considering the pcb shrunk, its highly likely less components were used, not just a relayout of components. Resulting in further cost down and even less power loss = better thermals. Retooling for the new plastics is negligible due to high demand of ps5. So yeah, same price, more money saved per year, and this is a post-NPI (sustaining) build they probably did one big sustaining validation given all the new parts.

It all came out of the Heatsink. It isn't better. The 1100 series is probably the best. they use square stamps and thermal contacts that make closer to 100% contact to the memory modules across the motherboard Vs the round stamps on the 1000 that only cover 30%-40% of the memory chips surface area. Yes, the heatsink on the 1100 is slightly smaller than the 1000 but it also has better heat transference due to the longer heat tubes into the fins. Pulls OUT more heat from the functional parts of the system. the 1200 has a lower wattage draw which tells me that the processing power is greatly reduced you just cant see it yet. That heat pipe is encased in the 1000 and 1100 models, I'm guessing they considered it best to leave it exposed to leech out heat through those huge "ports" they cut into the plastic body. As soon as you flipped them the 1100 was the clear winner. they got rid of that flow-blocking heatsink and incorporated its thermal load into the longer heat-tube with the fins that the fan can actually blow air through. DANG the heat management is leaps better than the 1000 on the 1100. On the 1200 it looks like they shortened the fin contacts on both tube stacks. less power=less heat=less performance

LESS POWER => lower thermals to compensate for the smaller heatsink basically its power throttled to 200 watts, same architecture same 7 nm no way they are gonna redesign the chip (apu) is way to expensive which means lower frequencies as a result worse performance also with smaller motherbard contributes to less plexiglass and copper layers making it cheaper overall. An even bigger disappointment by sony

Do b chasis is better than this new ?

  • @Xaltar_
    @Xaltar_ Pƙed 2 lety +17

The lower power draw is fairly easy to account for. The new board is clearly optimized better than the previous generations that were very likely iterative on the same design. Simply shortening the traces will improve efficiency and thus reduce power draw (not the full 20w obviously). I would imagine they have also integrated more on the new design, fewer, more integrated ICs to save on both manufacturing cost and improve efficiency. This is common practice with consoles. When the PS5 launched Sony would have been under a deadline crunch and would need to use whatever chips they had available to get these out the door. Integrating multiple ICs into one takes time to both design and fab, this is why you so often see smaller, less dense motherboards on later model consoles. Better efficiency also means less heat to dissipate, hence the smaller cooling solution. Bare in mind we are 2 years on from launch and many of the ICs will have seen upgrades in design, possibly even smaller fab nodes. Even without design changes on the core components (CPU/GPU), we will be seeing better yields with lower voltage requirements to be stable at the target clocks. This is normal across all CPU/GPU fab nodes as they mature.
I suspect the price premiums are due to economic factors. The US being excluded makes sense as it has seen less inflation than most of the rest of the world. The Euro is down about 15% - 20% of what it was not too long ago, ~$1.2 to 1 euro vs 1 to 1 more or less right now. That equates to about the same price in the US as Europe adjusting for comparative inflation.

Wish some millionaires would have bought a ton of PS5's and then sold them to people who wanted them at the MSRP prices to put these scalpers out of business. That would have torn into their sales and they would have all these PS5's and no money because they wasted it all buying them. I know I would have done that if I were a millionaire. It was interesting to see how the first version missed a few ram modules which cooled the cpu nicely, then the second model made better ram contact which was great while only rising cpu temps a bit due to thermal transfering through the heatsink, I wonder how this new design differs when it comes to the actual temps vs the other ones. The lower readings of the heatsink can go both ways of better cooling or poor heat absorbtion. We shall see hopefully

Not only did I pay for the game at $560, but it was digital! I bought the disc PS5 on purpose. I like collecting games. It's so greedy! What happened to the good old days of a few years ago where you could buy a bundle with a certain game launch and have the controller and console carry the theme of the game?! I'm genuinely getting tired of Sony's greed. If they didn't have the games I love, I wouldn't even bother. I have owned every single Playstation console over the last 22 years. Only bad for replacement reasons, though a great design choice. Older consoles get thrown out daily when the onboard battery dies, as they are rendered useless. Make it harder than most would go through trouble to replace, and you get mostly the same end result. It will make for more repurchases rather than repairs, and will help kill off old product line after battery lifespan, thus reducing population of ps5's during ps6 and ps7 era, increasing future demand.

So it's definitely a bad look and also super shady that the price increases aren't equal everywhere, no raise at all in the states.
They could be raising costs to cover the redesigned engineering inside the console and/or the cost of changes to the manufacturing process.
I bet this redesign is in response to backlash from how poor thermals/power draw are managed in the 1100 models. It's possible they are using the price hike to push the cost of their own mistakes on consumers. yikes.
I will say, the video really makes this ps5 look enticing, as cool as the original model while also drawing less power. More efficient than either previous model in both using and manufacturing it. Sony could have had a huge win win here if they hadn't gotten greedy.

Since the motherboard is so much smaller, I'd assume they both reduced the amount of traces (less copper to put power into means less leaked power) and chips (eg : old chip "A" and "B" are replaced with a single new chip "C" that can handle the latter 2's tasks; OR New Chip "Y" just consumes less power than old chip "X" to handle the same task(s)). I'd also take a look at the VRMs to see if the layout and/or serial numbers changed.
The blades of the fan are different and seem to have a lower mass, so it's also possible that it takes less Amperes to move a fixed amount of air.
Also the air seems to have a easier time going through the back of the PS5, with new holes and pieces of plastics to better guide the air. This could mean that there's a lower need for static pressure to allow the air to actually push through those fins => again, lower power requirements for the fan.
