  • We’ve got a beast of a job on our hands this week! The bucket and stick (dipper arm) off a 70 Tonne excavator are in for some TLC because the thrust faces are looking a bit worse for wear. In Part 1 of the fix, we're putting our brand new Sir Meccanica WS2 Plus line boring system with its Kit2000 facing head to the test! This machine is a game-changer for tackling these massive components with incredible precision. Get ready for a close up look into the setup process! We'll show you exactly how we get this system dialled in to attack those worn thrust surfaces. Plus, there's a definite sense of satisfaction in watching the machine methodically restore this hardworking excavator attachment.

Curtis' videos should be required viewing for EVERY student in EVERY mechanical trade and engineering program. They are case studies in practical repair and building practices for all kinds of machinery. These videos are doing the mechanical tradecrafts a huge favor!
After having seen him repairing so many different kinds of machine parts, now I can look at most anything and envision how I might be able to fix it, if only I had a big forklift, a honking big lathe, a shop crane, and the various other highly efficient, effective tools Curtis has...plus the knowledge of how to run them right, which is of course the most important part.

The main lesson learned by watching the first five minutes of this program is why the term “Young Guys” is used.
This is a young man’s trade.
Climbing up and down off of that bucket would wear a man out that wasn’t in good physical condition.
I know that other parts surrounding the trade are brutal to the body. The buffing and cleaning side is always going to take a toll.

Quality Tools and equipment are VERY expensive. I have all my tools and they look like they are on a Snap-On truck, because most came off a Snap-On truck. If you take care of your equipment, much of it will last your entire life. I laugh at the crap they sell on Craigs List as I take a look once in a while out of morbid curiosity. They try to sell a small tool box of miscellaneous rusted garbage for $100. Most people wouldn’t know nice quality tools if it slapped them in the face and knocked their front tooth out.
I also appreciate the care Kurtis shows his belongings. Well taken care of tools and a clean shop says a lot about a person. As a retired professional mechanic, this is something I took pride in and notice. There are shops I wouldn’t take my Radio Flyer wagon to.

I could have done with it yesterday, I was cutting up a section of 90mm chrome bar 1200mm long on my tiny 4x6 bandsaw for making up feet for my lathe, mill and surface grinder. Got the idea of the chrome bar off Kurtis as he chucks old ones in the skip. Contacted my local hydraulics place who wouldn't sell direct, but told me which scrap yard they used. I'm a stainless steel welder in the U.S. and we build the vessels that Daisy makes cottage cheese in in my department. Through the last 47 years I've helped build equipment for everything from pharmaceuticals to dog food.
I greatly admire your dedication to quality. You are extremely talented.
The out takes may be funny to many people but I feel your pain. I've been in many a tight spot and things go wrong at the worst possible time and I'd eat a spool of flux core if it would do any good.
Again, I have great admiration for your work.
