The sign "PW" Means "Polska Walcząca" or "Fightning Poland". According to wikipedia: "Polska Walcząca (PW) - a symbol in the shape of an anchor, where the letter P symbolizes Poland, and the arms represent the letter W - struggle or the "anchor" - a symbol of hope for the recovery of independence of Poland occupied by Nazi Germany. Widely used during World War II."

And the famous symbol of "Fighting Poland", so letter "PW" combined into an anchor, was designed by Anna Smoleńska - she was a member of the Grey Ranks, arrested by Gestapo, imprisoned in Pawiak prison and later murdered in Auschwitz at the age of 23. Some fun facts: yes 4 men teams, each GROM operative has to speak multiple languages, each member has to be medically trained or have medical knowledge so that they can treat themselves. They know how to operate and fix every weapon ever made! They were trained by US Delta Force and the Bristish special forces SAS. Look into their famous battle in Afghanistan where 4 GROM soldiers were attacked. They defeated and took out over 100 Taliban soldiers in a 6 hour long fire fight pinned down. Also they never lost a GROM soldier to date! Super badasses!

JW, which means military unit in Polish Jednostka Wojskowa. There were about 3,100 soldiers in all special forces in 2021, but it is difficult to estimate how many of them were in the JW GROM unit, maybe 500 or maybe 700 soldiers. Nowhere is it stated exactly how many soldiers there are in individual units, but there are 5 of them. The most important are JW GROM and JWK (K like Commandos) and the remaining 3 are auxiliary and the sixth is a supporting air unit. After 2022, there is no data on how many soldiers we have in special forces. Due to the war in the East, these data were kept secret. We are increasing the armies, so the specialists are also larger, but I think that ultimately there will be no more than 4,000-4,500 soldiers because they are expensive units to maintain and only used in exceptional situations, so there is no need to have more.

Also about sign and GROM. GROM is continuing tradition of paratroopers from Nazi occupied Poland times where that time so called "Cichociemni" ("Silent Unseen" very small Polish special forces of those times) trained in Britain were dropped to Poland to gather intelligence and support Polish underground fighting Nazi Germany. Anchored "P" was explained here by other people. It also means that Poland will fight even if it is occupied and it does not officially exist. It is tradition for the nation and culture to fight for it.

How good they are? They train with American Delta, US Navy SEAL's and British SAS. It is tier one unit meaning it goes everywhere where SAS, Delta or Navy SEL'As go and they can operate together. In fact, at start of Iraq war US Navy SEAL's took one oil terminal while Polish GROM took the other and it did it faster than US Navy SEAL's (I have a friend who was there in GROM). They also arrested Serbian mass murderer Slavek Dokmanovic aka "Butcher of Vukovar" in 15 minutes and his mercenaries did not know what hit them until their hands were zip tied and they got bags over their heads then in 2 hours Dokmanovic was transported from Serbia to Hague criminal court. Why do you think Putin will not travel to the rest of Europe? They protected US ambassador in Haiti at the beginning of their career (yes Polish GROM). If you know movie "American Sniper" so, I suggest read more comprehensive book from author Chris Kyle from US Navy SEAL's (autobiography from the war under the same title). There is sub-chapter where Chris says when he was freshly deployed to Iraq without his Navy SEAL unit he was on Polish GROM unit as sniper under Polish command. This is how close those unit operate. You can even read in that book (as well as another GROM operator book) how he was green and while patrolling with GROM he opened fire on car that was carrying two CIA operatives trying to make contact (big no-no when approaching special forces convoy). Polish operators tried to hide him to save his butt, but he admitted and he was put on ice for two weeks for this misdemeanor. Polish GROM trains everywhere including in Belize tropical rain forests to learn how to survive in jungle. They also have very harsh selection and no you cannot be individualist - you have to be good at teamwork, but you have to survive as individual with little to no help. The best individualists are eliminated just like weakest individuals. They use real ammo and flash bangs during training and their first commander and co-founder general Slawomir Petelicki was playing hostage for demonstration while they were shooting next to him - level of professional confidence.

Jeez does that video butcher the pronounciation. He's rolling the "o" in "Grom" into an "ou", where it should stop at the "o sound itself" - much like Arnold pronounced "Crom" in the Conan movies once upon a time. Also, the "JW" is not part of the unit's name proper - it's an acronym for "Jednostka Wojskowa" - "Military Unit". It's perfectly fine to refer to them as "GROM" or "GROM Unit", if one uses the Polish "JW" acronym they should read it with the Polish pronounciation ("Yotvu").
These days GROM is well known but does not get much media attention for obvious reasons.
