    I felt so bad for Nolan after watching his video of how he bit off more than he could chew with this classic. Deep inside I kept hope for him and his project. I could see the discouragement on his face. If you are somewhat experienced in the car game you have been there too. If you haven't then just wait you have obviously not gone too deep in your project. It's just part of it. Nolan really took it in stride. Sometimes you've got to bring in someone with more experience. Not to do it for you but to show you how it's done. Teach you about the car and giving tips along the way while you do your fair share of work. You pay your buddy in beer and pizza and you get knowledge and understanding of the vehicle. If you take it to a shop you'll pay thousands of dollars. You won't get hands on experience. Who knows if it's done the right way or if the main problem is taken care of. Props to Nolan and anyone else who gets in too deep but learns to swim. I'm really glad to hear this beast run can't wait to see it drive.

      even if the car is not in gear, and the torque converter is not engaged, the oil in the torque converter housing is still being rotated by the flywheel (since the engine is turning), and this spinning oil is enough to rotate the propshaft and the wheels (since they are in the air and there is zero load on them they are really easy to turn).

    One thing I've taken to heart from watching years of Roadkill, that David Freiburger said once about projects like this, is that your main starting focus should be on making that engine run, worry about gear, brakes, steering or making it pretty later, as long as that engine works and makes noise, you'll have motivation to work on the piece of crap.

    When timing a car with a point distributor before starting, there is a way to get it real close. Get number one cylinder on the compression stroke. Once you are sure that it is on the compression stroke turn the engine over by hand and line up the timing marks that you are going to use. The rotor should be very close to the number one terminal if the distributor has been installed correctly. Pull the number one wire from the distributor cap just far enough to create a gap. Apply power to the ignition system. Turn the distributor until you see or hear a spark jump from the cap to the number one spark plug wire. That's it, lock it down. (Of course the other end of the spark plug wire must be grounded.) It has been my experience that if you check it with a light later on you'll be within 2 degrees of where you lined up the marks.

    • @curbmassa
      @curbmassa Před 3 lety +15

      Good tip. Can also be done with a 12-volt test light hooked to ground and the ignition turned on. Probe the lead from the coil to the distributer, turn the distributer and when the light goes out the points are closed. Old motorcycles were done this way.

    • @JunkyardDigs
      @JunkyardDigs  Před 3 lety +46

      @@JunkyardDigs The first time I read about timing a car that way was in the owner's manual for a 1948 Buick that I picked up at an old car swap meet many years ago. It only works with point systems though because years later when I had a hot rod with MSD ignition it didn't work. Luckily by that time I had enough experience that I could get it in the ballpark and the car would start without flaming up through the carburetor or backfiring in the exhaust.

      Guys - if you really want to keep your old iron running long-term, you better look into ways of operating it with substantially reduced environmental impact, today. By reclaiming past resource usage, you're already off to a decent start, just the amount of dead dinosaurs pumped out of the ground would have to be reduced dramatically, and preferably without upsetting people's food supply and other such fun stuff. Synthetic fuels may be one avenue to explore, this may still be feasible for a somewhat niche hobby. It's probably not going to get as bad as the 1890s when people had to buy petrol in drugstores, not any time soon.
      There is little doubt that some drastic changes in resource usage in all areas of life will be necessary in the next decade or two - better hit the ground running now if you want to be ahead. Conserving resource usage by keeping old equipment running and adapting it to new uses and requirements is likely to be just as important as introducing fancy new technology in pulling it all off, so that's not a bad set of skills to have at all. The better we do the more likely people are still going to be able to enjoy old cars in 50 or 100 years or now, instead of being preoccupied with war, famine and migration.

Best of luck to you Nolan. Simple as it is, that 6 volt positive ground system will probably give you years of puzzle solving enjoyment. I can already suggest that you check out your voltage regulator. Blew mine out once getting a 12V jump. That 331 Hemi. The Fluid-Torque drive "automatic" with its clutch and lift-off to shift up, floor-it to shift down. The drive-with-your-pinky overpowered power steering. You're in for hoots and headaches.

    After some thought, I"d like to review your processes on getting old cars started. First, if you use a carburetor cleaner to start the car, you have the added benefit of being able to put the spray tube down the carburetor bowl vent to fill the bowl. This does mandate that you use a brand of carburetor cleaner that a car can run on, but I find Gumout or berryman B-12 do nicely. When trying to fire off a diesel,penetrating oils like WD-40 or Deep-Creep are excellent, especially on glow plug diesels where ether is an explosion hazard . Brake cleaners often contain toluene and have dangerous fumes when burned. I put a few liner assemblies in detroit diesel two strokes because the operator put too much ether in it and then got it to ignite. Second, to check the ignition system on an older car,put your test light on the negative side of the coil and crank it. If it just burns dimly, the points/ignition module are/is defective.If it flickers, the coil is being turned on and off by points or module. This isn't meant to be a gripe, but hopefully sharing some knowledge. Great video, and Kudos for helping a friend in need. All the best to you and Mook.

      I got goosebumps. I was so excited about it and I am no skin in the game. That's when you know they did a great job with the video and are good people. They make you care about it way more than you reasonably should as just a spectator and just watching through a phone, not even in person. Awesome job! Awesome video!! Awesome people!!! #MoPowaBabeh
