Scars Above Review - Is This A Returnal Knock-off?

- In terms of performance, I only had a single issue with Scars Above. This review covers the PS5 version of the game, and the frame rate seems to hold pretty steady even when things get hectic. I didn’t notice any serious frame drops or stutters. I did, however, have the game completely crash in the intro sequence. It gave me a bad feeling so I was braced for more lost progress due to semi-frequent crashes, but I only ever saw that one.
There is a lot to like in Scars Above. If you can get past the issues with the character models and animations, there is a really fun, unique sci-fi shooter with an interesting story to experience. - Hry
Good combat, gameplay and story. Half the price of returnal. That’s a win for me. I’ll be picking this up.

Returnal is only $29. Returnal is a must buy over this, unless you don't like hard games then pick this up.

It's nice to hear a more open minded review like this one. I saw another review that focused too much on the gameplay being too easy like nothing else mattered, but this one touched upon all the other aspects of the game that makes it overall a fun experience. That is highly appreciated and it makes me want to try this out, especially if it has inspiration from Returnal cause I loved the feel of that game.

Scars Above reminds me of Remnant From the Ashes. It has that gameplay hook with jank that either you love or hate it. I loved Remnant and I so far love Scars. It’s something different that what we have been getting lately from AA studios
From the footage I can totally see Remnant from Ashes comparison. I dug RfA too. ( I heard the new one is sick).

Good review. As someone who plays a lot of old school games still i find the not so realistic animations quite charming actually.
Good to hear it's well-received. I was cautiously optimistic when I wishlisted it when word first broke out about it... thought it looked like Remnant: From the Ashes, which piqued my interest. May pick it up while waiting for more news about Remnant 2.

I still go back and play my PS3 to this day if the game is fun I really don't care what it visually looks like. Crazy to me that some people will literally skip out on a good game just because they can't stand to sit there and look at the visuals
Looks unique. I didn't know it had Souls elements but if it's anything like Returnal/ Remnant From Ashes, I'll try it.

The animation jank reminds me of Mass Effect Andromeda, so I'd say it's about 5-7 years off the pace. Not so bad for a AA game. It looks enjoyable for a AA price, so with nothing else on my playlist I think I'm in.

when someone who actually knows what he is doing and does his job right and gives a game a chance, then u get a review like this, i am sold on it, will get it after i get RE4 and WOLONG and see if i have any cash left, it is cheap, around $35 so that is nice.

It's on sale at the Game Collection shop for £22, on sale on XB for £26.64, haven't checked on PS yet, hope that helps and maybe saves you a few quid, I found this game refreshing, no politics, no wokery just a good game from relatively new devs.

Somehow never heard of this game, very tempted to get it.
This has been on my radar since Steam Fest last year. I love the atmosphere and world design. Instant day one buy for me.

Game looks interesting. Weak facial animanions is not a flaw for me. I play 30 years old pixelated games, or retro stuff- this looks awesome in comparison. Gameplay is what matters most. Il gladly give this game a try.
Well I bought Dolmen so I’ll definitely be picking this one up. I’m all in on sci fi Soulslight shooters at this point. It looks nothing like Returnal though, aside from a female protagonist in an alien setting. For 40 bucks, this is a good price for admission and we need more sci fi games in general, as well as linear action games. Some of the footage almost reminds me of Lost Planet at times more than Returnal. Going to check this one out and hopefully they get a shot at a sequel to further hone the game’s mechanics, which sound genuinely interesting at times.
Did you end up finishing Dolmen? Is it worth a playthrough?
How was Doleman? Looked like some souls-like/light with Euro Jank, which I’m good with.

Funny, how IGN gave this game a 5 and this review gives it an 8, such a big difference. I think that I will give it a chance, seems good enough and I don't need character models to have a lot of development, an IGN criticism.
Returnal has become my favorite game on PC now, so I'm sold. 👍🏽

Loved Returnal. But just went by too fast. Got a little tired playing it over and over despite some awesome upgrades over time.
Definitely will be playing this while I wait for RE4 Remake.

i have played it and everything seems ok accept the gunplay which sucks big time you have to draw the weapon first before you can shoot which takes about a second by which time the enemy has hit you and the aiming is not precice, if you dont mind clunky controls for shooting its an ok game but if you are like me and expect some fluid movement and shooting i would not bother or at least try before you buy.
its trying to be returnal but its not worthy but as a stand alone sci fi shooter with clunky controls it delivers.
Is there no way to keep your gun on target, sights up as you play? Or do you have to draw it so to speak every time?
Lore of this game is that she’s not a gunfighter but scientist. Maybe that’s reason takes a moment to get gun aimed?

i gave up on it it la long time ago RETURNAL it is not. RETURNAL may be hard but its fun, looks incredable and the combat is spot on
@@stephenmeinhold5452 I had fun with Returnal too. Played a ton then got a little tired of playing same levels over and over despite how cool leveling up weapons were.
Didn’t think this would be Returnal like but when watching gameplay does give off similar vibe.
I kind of thought this may play more like maybe an over the shoulder Resident Evil type game, maybe something like Daymare, that booty knockoff that actually made some waves and if I’m not mistaken is getting a sequel or spin off
@@mattpenix8438 me too but everything gets stale after a whille but the combat in scars sucks big time, i liked the game but the combat was too clunky and the enemys were not interesting enough for me.
but i can see how if you can get past that its a decent game.
if they do make a second one and if they do fix the combat i would be interseted.

Cmon, all environmental atmosphere is ripped off, lightning effects, biome design, general mechanics except ultra fast pace of gameplay like returnal represents. Returnal also had more projectile shooter parts than melee attacks.

Oh great, a stuck up pretentious 'auteur' had enough weight and sway in the game production to shoehorn in these stupid features. Doesn't help earlier he said the studio behind this only worked on point and click adventure games prior so that probable what they think players want, as well knowing they're 'trying to inovke'(see blatantly ripping off) Returnal's feel.
I'm willing to give the game a chance, but I also wouldn't be surprised if this game is filled with busy work click here and here to open the McGuffin to get a puzzle piece elements that slog down the gameplay.

They said the unlocking feature is a "standout". That's such a doublespeak, dishonest way of putting things. Yes, it stands out... but for how much it sucks but they imply that it's a good thing.
@@HighLanderPonyYTI thought it was an interesting feature I don't see in games of this type, so I highlighted it. I think the developers did a good job of including things they are known for in a project that's so different from what they typically do.
All that frame rate talk but you never said if it was 30 or 60.
Probably closer to 30, I don't have any way of counting frames on the PS5.
I'm completely over games "sincerely imitating" other games. Especially when the game trying to imitate copies about 90% of their inspiration. It's no different than an artist copying another artist's song.

Game is atrocious weapons don't work as intended, hit registration is all over the place bullets go through enemies or do zero damage and u take damage when there's clearly no connection. Dumster fire for this one I'm afraid

I thought it was a great game
Cringe dialogue. "a weapon is a very human concept. perhaps what we perceive as a weapon is just a tool". Like what? How is a weapon a human concept? Compared to tool less animals sure its a human concept. Although some animals do use tools and sticks or rocks as weapons such as elephants. But to an advanced intelligent species of course they would have weapons. This is such a dumb attempt for this character to morally grandstand and play some intellectual snobbery card.

Why is NO ONE comparing this to Remnant? Sounds a LOT more like Remnant than Returnal. Also another bad review that does not describe combat mechanics or what kinds of abilities you get or how your character or abilities upgrade. Horrible review.
