Funnily enough, I think part of the reason he doesn’t get talked about as much as he should is because of Adley’s call-up the previous year. He got the chance to show himself first, and so people associate him with being the “leader” of the O’s new young crop.
That, and also being a switch-hitting catcher is really cool. Being a catcher who’s good on both sides period has people calling him the catcher of the 2020’s, as Buster Posey was for the 2010’s and Joe Mauer was for the 2000’s.

He’s an aggressive base runner, turning routine singles into doubles many times! Just 1 of 100’s of reasons he’ll be MVP contender every season in next decade! Already respected 🫡 & feared 😱by AL East teams, or all MLB teams!
Having 4+ hits in a game, especially 4+ XBH hits is extremely impressive!
If in a game the O’s winning by 10+ runs & just needs a single for cycle 1st Base coach holds him at 1st so he achieves the cycle! It’s a good move for the achievement but would feel it wasn’t natural as it should be!
Ironically a player with 3+ hits in game and are a single away from cycle, after already toughest hits: HR & Triple (toughest one) with a double, just needing a base hit/single seems to be more common occurrence! Or maybe being a triple away is isn’t brought up like being a single away? Apologies for not having stats (will look it up & find out which hit is most commonly final one needed for cycle).
Don't get me wrong a cycle is great achievement! But 4+ XBH hits is even more impressive! 4+ HR in a game is historic!! Will look up if anyone has had 3-4 triples in a game? That’s most rare Achievement, if it’s ever happened??

4 Triples have been achieved 3 times in MLB history: Twice over a century ago in late 1800's George Strief with the Philadelphia Athletics of the American Association in 1885 and Bill Joyce with the New York Giants of the NL in 1897 !

He didn't stop at first and hustled to 2nd for 4 Xtra base hits. All while in a blow out game. He plays the game hard every play every game. • @tomdiets5079

Gunnar didn’t get as much hype about being number 1 prospect because he was 1 prospect for such a short period of time, by time he became number 1 prospect the Orioles called him up. Adley Rutchman was number 1 before him and he was the orioles first pick in 2019 draft and Gunnar was the Orioles next pick in that same draft. So Adley kinda over shadowed him, but this kid has super star written all over him, he plays the game 110% every time he steps on the field, another reason he may be over shadowed is he’s very quiet and doesn’t show boat, he lets his play on the field do all his talking and show boating for him. Also it wasn’t Gunnar’s fault we didn’t move in in the playoffs he hit 6-12 .500 p, Hr p, 3 rbi

Hopefully a long run of Orioles good times are imminent. 🙂

Im sort of jealous of those who were able to see Frank, Brooks, boog, Al, Paul , grich, Belanger, singleton, Buford, DeCinses, Lou Ap amongst others play in their prime Os Days and being a big fan of pitching im super jealous of all those Os fans that got to see actual Cy young winning seasons and all those 20 game winners we’ve had in the past (hoping Burnes can bring us another Cy young , looking good so far, maybe we can spend some money and extend him for 4-5 years while we’re at it)
The two orioles I got glimpses of in uniform but really wish I was able to see in action especially while in their primes is Earl Weaver Managing, he was so ahead of his time with his pitching, defense and hit 3 run homers strategy basically breaking down baseball to its most basic elements and making it work proving to professional baseball that winning is all about catching the ball, throwing the ball, seeing the ball and hitting the ball… baseball philosophy I’ve used my whole life (my first year as a fan in memory was his last and worst as a manager) and one of my favorite Orioles Rick Dempsey of course I saw him come back in like 92 and again my first year as a fan in memory was his last with the O’s but I mainly remember him with the Dodgers in the World Series and then coming back to the orioles for his last active season and then being a base coach and bullpen coach with us for a bit (I was pissed when they passed him over and gave Mazzilli the manager job in 03 and then again passed him over for manager in like 2010/2011 whenever that was but then again I always loved him as an analyst and commentator so at least theirs a small silver lining their lol)
And I still feel we would of had a mini dynasty if Jeffery Maier didn’t ruin game 1, I mean he helped turn Jeter into a hero, killed Benitez’s confidence early on his career, electrified that whole stadium, took the wind out of our sails, changed the whole momentum of that game and series and I feel like tarasco makes that catch, everything goes like it did we win that game by a run, take game 2 and are up 2-0 taking both games in NY going back to Baltimore up 2-0 which changed the whole series, I mean games 3 and 4 we lost late like 8th inning giving up runs but if we are up 2-0 in the series the feel and strategy of those games changes, the pressure on NY changes how they play, pitch and act I mean the only game we really got creamed was game 5 when they had a 6 run inning on Erickson, I mean game 4 I think was Coppinger and he was shaky but left only down by 1 I think 4-3 or 5-4 so we were in that game and we were scoring in their bullpen many don’t remember that part either but yeah I think we win they we head to the series maybe we stay winning after 97 maybe we resign mussina and are able to attract free agents again and don’t go into a basically almost 15 year rebuild that had some fun teams and bright spots but didn’t make it back to the playoffs to lose to the Yankees again In 2012, the year my daughter was born so I remember it better then most lol
I have however been to a world series the orioles played in and won, 1983 I was barely 2 and of course don’t remember shit but I’ve been told we went to game 1 which sadly we lost but I’ve heard the story a ton apparently saw John Denver sang the national anthem which my grandfather always talked about as he was a big JD fan, I’m also told they also had game 6 /7 tickets but the series didn’t make it that far (not sure if I was to go to either of those games with them had they happened I just know that they had tickets or had the hook up to get tickets however they worked that out I’m not sure (my grandfather , before he passed, had crazy hook ups, he was a “union” guy and got caught up in some gambling stuff and was eventually indicted and spent a chunk of the later 80’s on vacation lol but even after that if you needed something that was hard to or impossible to get like event tickets he always knew someone lol)

I just started following baseball again
    Why is he batting leadoff?

    • @brendan9868

It’s been a strange trend lately to bat a power hitter lead off. The Phillies have been doing it too with Kyle Schwarber, who might well be the worst contact hitter in the league lol.
I think the idea is to give them more chances to change the game via more at bats. Though Gunnar is fast enough to be a more traditional lead off guy regardless tbh

I think a lot of it is people were already fixated on Adley Rutschman as the face of the team. To be fair, he's considered already the top at his position in the game while Gunnar has to go through the likes of Corey Seager in the SS comparisons. He'll get his flowers soon enough though Im sure.

The one and only reason he doesn't *quite* get the respect he deserves from filthy casuals yet is playing on the same team as Adley Rutschman. Full. Stop.
