- 18 fighters from the club, from fairly new students to experienced and including both instructors. To start each bout, two fighters volunteer and step forward, each reaches into a bag and pulls out a token which decides their weapon. There is only one of each - sword and buckler, sword and shield, longsword, sabre, spear, dagger and sickle.
Some have never used the weapons they end up with. The aim of this is to have fun, pressure test people in different ways and mix it up.
Every bout is first to three hits. All target zones except for spear (thrust only for safety due to audience). Grappling and throws are allowed, but score is only recorded with a strike from a weapon. - Sport
And the moral of the story is don't use the sickle. Not even once.
+GregTom2 I thought the moral was "no one gets to use the Katana because it's too OP."
Probably could have thrown it to better effect, yeah. :/ Man, is that thing ever compromised. Maybe as a left-hand parrying tool?
maybe tie the sickle to a long chain and use as kusarigama?
moral of the story is get better with the sickle.
Buk Lau ditch the sickle and git gud with a pitchfork, a regular knife, or even an stake like object.
Oh man, give the Harvester at least a buckler or something :D
Life isn't always fair :-)
The peasants are revolting
harvester just need to throw sickle to the opponent and rush him with fists
plebs do not know how to fence
throw the sickle to end him rightly
You guys make me sickle
Harmless farmer being ruthlessly attacked by raider 1612 *colourized*
poor sickle guy... has to work so hard just to get a hit! :P
All Omen The peasant revolt isn't working out very well. they should upgrade to bigger sickles!
How about a hammer and sicle dual wielding?
Maciej Jerzy Malik with that, you'd easily be able to SEIZE THE MEANS OF PRODUCTION
Andrew Salchenberger XD
Maciej Jerzy Malik because you can't fight on an empty stomach
XD
They would die of starvation first.
8:47 , he seemed even more surprised then me that he caught that :D
he paused and looked down for a sec lmao
that girl was really good with the sabre. calm and collected
second that, the girl really made the Sabre look like a pure weapon of elegance. beautiful sight to see
It's especially cool in contrast with the longsword, which is tricky and more brutal.
What's the time for that bout?
@@GothicStraw39 It starts at 13:05
@@GothicStraw39 12:34
Thought the spear produced most interesting, creative sparring
Gotta love and respect how honest the fighters are. Never have I seen a sport with so much truth between opponents.
16:00 Nice grappling there haha. Great idea and fun as hell to watch.
+Roderik Vikström I just wish he hadn't broken my leg guard :(
GaGrin Oh it broke? Sry about that. Shit happens!
+GaGrin One of the straps break off did it? They can be sewn back on. I have some old ones you can salvage straps or buckles from if need be.
Aye, it looks fairly clean. Just the stitching ripped so it should be easy enough to fix.
2:44 at least he died with style (dabbing)
Older video but still took the time again to rewatch. Nick really is a good all-rounder practitioner. I mean, he did really well with the short dagger and sickle against spear and longsword. Kudos.
This look so darn fun and challenging xD
Not even one pommel throw :(
Alec Martinez no one wins then. End him rightly or not at all.
That first round was awesome! What an effort from a supremely unlucky dip
26:55 WOW very good play by the one with the dagger
Throughout the video i noticed Nick seems like a very aggressive fighter, doesn't give them time to think! Definitely was a fun video to watch. Plan on doing more of these "lucky dip" events?
Even after 4 years I still get entertained by this. Why was there never another?
We've done a few things similar but it doesn't always get filmed. When the lockdown ends and our sparring events return, we will once against do it.
I participated in a similar tounament not too long ago and boy was it was a whole lot of fun. My first weapon to use was a flail with the opponent having aone as well. Later on, I got matched against the primary instructor of the place. I'm rather new, even newer then, with maybe nine months of not very rigorous experience then. I thought I was screwed. But then I got sword and rotella and he got dagger. Praise be unto the RNG, I managed three wins to zero losses that bout.
Would not want to be the dude with the sickle
@ 24:11 that was a quick announcement lol
To avoid this many doubles, perhaps use a depreciating point system? Each person starts with some number, and each time they get hit they lose a certain number, instead of being awarded. Last man with points left wins. Awards hitting crucial areas and if both keep running into doubles, decent chance that nobody wins.
That way you won't be so keen to expose your head to snipe a toe, and sketchier situations will award the person striking where it matters.
Don't bring a sickle to a sword fight as they say
I was waiting for some one to just throw the sickle.
The "to the growned" dagger was ace work BTW 👍
The sickle guy, so much heart.
Could you guys do more of these? It's very intriguing to see so many different weapons and styles against each other :)
i can watch this all day
and whoever wields the spear wins, it definitely has the highest win rate.
+Mark Yep the spear really dominates in two hands against unarmoured opponents. It would do even better if it were a little more rigid. We should have better spear trainers in a few months time.
26:16 ''You killed him!'' Lmao!
7:09 in a real duel that guys guts would've been all over the floor
dat wobly spear x)
+clubinglex Yep, people appreciate its wobbliness when it hits them :-) I'd still prefer rigid, but we have used them before, and they hit like a train, and are prone to breaking and becoming sharp. Not good in such a mix up as this.
in use ash with big rubber tip, i will probably stop after the first breaked ribs. But until there ,only 4 hour free sparing spear vs shield and sword, i just have a little bruise. a good ruber tip that bend is very efficient to reduce the impact.
+clubinglex Yep we used similar for a while ourselves. They are useable, but not safe for the chaotic mixed weapon fighting we did here. We also had two break where the remaining shaft became sharp and very dangerous, and I have seen the cutting power when used in two hands deal immense damage. Still happy to use hardwood spear trainers, but only in more controlled conditions. Here we were throwing a great variety of fighters in with a wild array of weapons. Some of those hits would have been very painful and/or done some serious damage.
Right now I don't have any hardwood spears left after the breaks, only poleaxe and bayonet. When I get some more 8 footers again we will do more videos with them.
@@AcademyofHistoricalFencing make it likea 8" rubber end at the end of the shaft that bends/gives fully upon impact
Really goes to show how important having superior reach with your weapon is.
Great video ! such a fun idea !
can somebody tell me the advantages of a buckler in a world where shields exists? thank you !
Thanks, please see this video all about bucklers - czcams.com/video/YmDo02rCsrA/video.html
This seems fun. The description says its a random lottery of which weapons you use, that would be fun.
Yes it is fun, and a little whacky at times. We have coins with the name of each weapon type taped on, all thrown into a bag, and each fighter picks out a coin. There is only one coin for each weapon type, so there is never a matched fight.
*grabs a stick* u wanna fokin sword fite m8?
*friend grabs a stick* Fokin bring it on m8
good ol times man... i always won, even if we broke our bones i always won
I should be there fighting and learning with these guys... instead im stuck here at work, in the other side of the world just wishing i could be there or even having the chance to practice like that and not alone.
I feel ya
Different weapons is always interesting and fun. Even Romans know that when they organized gladiator fights.
+Strategiusz Exactly so. It always fascinates and entertains. Not only that, fights in history frequently were not matched, and yet most people in practice focus on matched pairings.
+Academy of Historical Fencing It would be facinating to combine the ancient Chinese stick and sword technique inside. (Sword came from Wudang, and stick came from Shaolin). Stick was made as a defensive weapon rather than a killing weapon, but it actually has very similar moves as the Chinese red-tasselled spear. I personally learned the "art of sword" when I was young, but it's too bad we can't share our experience to each other.
1:10 Great counter by the guy with the black shield. He has great form.
Man so fast! @ 7:32 Lured into stepping into close measure then strike!
A sickle trainer? What?
Blackfencer.
Longpenis*
Ian Hollier no, Blackfencer. They also do a toothed variant
The guy with the dagger made it look easy, one would think that the shorter range weapon would inherently be at a disadvantage, or was he just fast enough to outmaneuver the sword?
It is a huge disadvantage, but with speed an aggression, there is always a chance. Especially if the swordsman is not used to fighting a dagger, and only other swords.
I wish to try this, good vid
The spear against the knife was really interesting
Hilarous, the sickle, every time
I love when the fights go to grappling
This is just the perfect fight between a Yiga footsoldier and Link
I wonder why anyone would dislike this video
Looks like you have a lot of different skill levels with different weapons on the go there.
Push-cuts easily look like missed thrusts. And how easily does equipment allow training weapons to slide off when a thrust might still catch your ribs?
Spartacus sends his regards.
Very interesting video , but for some reason the guys only moved back and forward ?
+3BEPbKO Most of the styles we teach are predominately linear, such as sabre, rapier, and companion weapon combinations, and when you have mismatched combinations where once has a lot more reach than the other, this is exaggerated further, as distance must be covered quickly.
+Academy of Historical Fencing
Forgive my English . But the longsword , sword + shield, spear originally meant moving direction is forward / backward
+3BEPbKO Longsword fighting should involve lot of lateral movement, but when you are doing sparring it may go to linear.
+Rába Marcell
Perhaps you're right , and I think it's a bit equates fighters
Love the swords & spears. The sickle is a dumb idea. Respect for the skill for attempting to use it though. No axes? No dual wielding? No pommel throwing? No chains & flails?
Reach is king in edged weapons, it is being proven over and over in this video.
What are these weapons made of?
Sword and shield just seems the best combination to me.
The dagger performs surprisingly well against spears.
Has anyone there ever sparred with a gladiator's scissor weapon? Apparently it was commonly paired with a pugio (dagger). If so, do you know of any companies that make training versions?
What are the weapons made of
Second:) sickle is soo bad weapon! next short sword vs long sword train?
What are your thoughts on attempting to reduce the frequency of Doubles over Decisive Victories? I think putting something on the line in consecutive bouts could make fighters think somewhat more conservatively in terms of their wellbeing; perhaps a best of 3 or 5 match could have Doubles subtract a point from both fighters total score to a minimum of 0, not entering the negatives (rather than being treated as null, with neither fighter recieving points). Obviously, that would make the match go on for much longer, but perhaps personal safety might be taken into greater consideration, since most fights, at least in my opinion, are about survival more than killing or harming one's enemy.
We've experimented with a lives based system. Where you lose a life for each hit taken, including in doubles, and those lives are counted in total at the end of round robin style tournaments. It certainly helps. But ultimately I have never seen a system that forces people to full take defence seriously, it mostly comes down to the individuals mindset. Fine if both parties do that, but not if one or more doesn't. But that is an inherent problem with tournaments.
man i wish i could try this
I wna see knife and fork vs chopsticks lmaooo
What I learned here was that the sickle is practically useless against longer weapons :v
What shield are you using? It looks synthetic.
Plastic police riot shields. Though they are not really up to the job, and we have broken many. I now use a steel one that is much more realistic as you will see on a few of our videos.
Where do you learn this
Would it be more efficient to grab the opponent's spear, instead of parrying?
Grabbing it is ideal, but extremely difficult until you have closed some distance following a parry. Its simple a case of speed and leverage, the hand is easily deceived, but the sword has a much greater chance of safely engaging.
this is good stuff mostly!
where are the axe users?!
What do you guys use for spears?
In this video manau cane. For shorter spears we use narrow bo staffs with rubber heads from Revival/Windrose. None of these solutions are ideal. But I know of something much better on the way that will appear on the channel just as soon as it is released.
A mi like !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lol first guy puts his hand in the box and pulls out a gardening sickle "Ahhh crap"
where do you get your training weapons ?
+Tarquinn St From Black Fencer (spain), they also have resellers elsewhere. Check out the review of their products on our channel.
Hello again brothers in arms,
That's an interesting assortment of weapons you have there. I like the black shields, the sickle is also nice but... ehm, not a very good primary weapon. I'm curious; this sort of system with a single point for every hit, is this the system you normally employ for sparring sessions?
+Shutendoji Sickle was taught in 'Paulus Hector Mair' solo. It was thrown in for variety and fun. As for scoring, bear in mind this is HEMA, and our main goal is not tournament or sport. The fact we scored this is because it was unusual in that it was a sort of tournament setting. During normal sparring conditions we would stop after any good hit though yes, that is the best overall system for freeplay. Easy to manage and understand.
We do however use other methods for training different aspects. So continuous fight to two hits, or until one part has received a blow that would be considered incapacitating or deadly. There is no perfect system really. Giving weighting to certain target zones (like the head) can be useful as a practice tool, but breeds it's own form or sportive point chasing.
+Academy of Historical Fencing I agree completely, we've been discussing how to solve sparring also. We have close connections to Hanwei since we're located in the same city and they're trying to launch a combative sport with foam swords, based on the rules we gave to them that we in turn got from FightCamp. They're not too bad but I've noticed they encourage a certain sort of fighting that is essentially Kendo with lightly tapping your opponent on the head or hands. I was mostly curious how you choose to run things, if you do a lot of tournament-like bouts or mostly stick to free sparring.
+Shutendoji We don't do many tournament bouts, but we do a lot of free sparring and also situational sparring where people are testing in all sorts of conditions. The issue of introducing any system of rules is that it almost always causes the fight to change, as people will do whatever they have to for a win under that rule system. A classic example is scoring more points for head shots, but that encourages people to actively seek the head rather than defend themselves. Afterblow, another rule that in theory exists for the right reasons, but often results in a mentality of always strike, rather than defend. I don't think there is any ideal solution. Stick to one rule set and people will game it. Best to get changing things up, experiment with all different setups and conditions.
+Academy of Historical Fencing The point about people fighting to the rules reminds me of another video--I think it was one of Matt Easton's, but it might have been one of yours--talking about people not using thrusts as often in tournaments because judges have trouble seeing if they connect.
+Florid Ferret Yep it is a real problem. A big cut in a nice arc that makes a good 'whack' sound on impact will get well noticed and applauded by a crowd to the degree that a thrust before hand can go unseen or dismissed in the case of afterblow. Thrusts often flex the blade and then bounce off in a way which it becomes difficult to defend against that afterblow.
what are you using for the spear?
This one is manau cane, a type of rattan. We use a range of rattan and hard wood options with different tips from tapped foam to purpose made spear training tips. Each with strengths and weaknesses as a training tool.
now this is what i call entertainment! :D
I could watch this forever
This proletarian has sickle. Where is his hammer?
What about a sickle and chain like those nice Japanese farmers used?
I wish I could learn from the the Mrs. on 13:04
has a kick boxig/muay thai guy walking in there with gauntlets and greeves?
If I keep watching these videos I'll feel like joining a HEMA club and that's impossible from were I come from so I just practice MMA.
are they not allowed to throw the sickle?
No. We only throw weapons in very carefully controlled tests. There is an audience of twenty people watching this as well as the judge, allowing weapon throws would be a recipe for disaster.
I might recommend that when using a saber against a dagger wielding opponent that it would be wise to eschew the typical British tradition of holding the point on line while trying to strike with the last 1/3 of the blade, and instead adopting a more "hammer-grip" style with an Eastern European or Indian Tulwar style of draw and push cuts in a close arc around the body. Once the dagger wielding opponent has closed in past the point of the saber, they have a distinct advantage over a British style. Just my two cents.
+401 Kill That is what I would do yes. Though the thumbs up grip and point online is very much a later sabre practice (as we used to teach), also used with spadroon. But now we teach from Roworth, he uses a hammer grip due tot he weight of the blade/balance, and a much more upright and withdrawn tip.
What was the weight of the Longest two handed sword? I guess it wasn't even similiar to a real one, right?
1.4kg for the longsword in this video. All of the training swords in this video are within a historically accurate weight range.
Ouh, thanks!
that's unfair fighting with only a sickle , and dagger v spear -run away
My biggest gripe with this type of sparring is always that in a real fight, you don't cut the enemy and automatically win, you cut the enemy, and then the enemy ignores the cut and tackles you to the ground while spilling blood all over you.
There are lots of sparring scenarios and setups that can simulate different things. A simple and fast tournament setup like this isn't intended to be close to real, but for people to just have fun and pressure test themselves. In other sparring we have afterblows and multiple hits etc. Just look at the katana vs rapier video and you will find complaints that the katana user wasn't stopping after being hit, and that was done for this precise reason, to simulate the very possible scenario that they can keep coming at you after being hit.
Different sparring for different times and reasons.
Are the weapons as heavy as the real stuft?
+Tien Doan Historically there was a great variety of course, but as a rule yes, the longsword is the only one that could be considered a little underweight, but only by about 200 grams.
26:59 assassination mastery lvl 87
Where do you guys get your training weapons?
All in this video are from www.blackfencer.com/en/. We use steel training swords from a variety of suppliers.
Thanks!
I love the dagger fighter at 27:34.
The first second into this video I thought "sickle man is going to be striked a lot" I was right lol
How long is the spear?
Eight feet.
How are the weight of those trainer weapons compared to real ones? They seem kinda light.
Do they ever use real metallic weapons (of course not sharpened ones) in this sport? Or at least realistically weighted ones?
realistically weighted ones are usually about the same weight as the trainers, that is a few pounds.
For example, a normal knight arming sword would normally be 2.5 pounds or so. A two handed longsword could be 5 pounds.
Weapons are meant to be wielded easily
otherwise you would never kill anything effectively because of their weight, and thats accounting for things such as armor or lack thereof
Most of the synthetic swords used In this video are of a realistic weight and handling characteristic to original swords, and yes we use steel blunts frequently, go through our channel and you will find loads of it. Most swords historically were a lot lighter than people think. I own almost fifty antique swords now, and frequently have the manufacturers match the specification perfectly.
Thanks guys for answering.
This stuff looks like a tons of fun! :)
How do i join a hema guild this cool?
Are any of you guys left handed? I am a lefty and wanted to know how common fighting left handed is.
We do certainly have some lefties in the club. Search our channel for Lech, Sam or Damien, there are a few others. At least one or two of them feature in this video.
They are always a minority. One in ten people is left handed in Britain today, I would say maybe one in fifteen in our club is a leftie. It gives them an advantage, because they get so much practice against right handers, whereas right handers get comparatively little practice against lefties. Of course two lefties together can really make a mess!
Where is this place?
This was shot at our quarterly gathering in Chepstow. But the clubs train weekly in Bristol, England, and Newport, South Wales, UK.

I'd almost consider the sickle a grappling weapon in no way would I try to make a slash , id try and hook and get in close for grappling, this is your only way of having a chance with out fleeing in my opinion. I'd also say you wouldtake alot of collateral damage from this but better than waiting to be slashed up. Also the female saber user was amazing not 1 wasted movement
can anyone tell me where I can get this kind of armor?
See the video below for info about our equipment. As an overview, SPES (Poland), Red Dragon (UK), and Leon Paul (UK) for masks. But there are a great many other suppliers.

so another rules to apply (for me) with sickle is..... ok i can lost my arm (parry 1 hit of two sword for example) if i cut the throat after ... :)
Moving off line would benefit most of the fighters witha weapon disadvantage.
If you are at the reach disadvantage staying on line is generally not the best plan. Especially against a spear.
really sad that this isn't in my country. like...damn does this look cool
Where about's are you? We might be able to point you towards a similar club.
Middle east
That will make it a lot tougher, not many HEMA clubs in that part of the world. But there is a revival of Razmafzar in Iran for example, which is an equivalent and trains with many similar weapons. What country are you in?
I'm going to make it even tougher :) Iran
