How to make a satirical soulslike is to have an enemy that winds up its attacks super dramatically and then never actually swings
Trolls like
Elden ring
@@savary5050 fr
It's 2023 it's time to just stop making satire. Subverting things isn't interesting, brave or unique in any way anymore.
@@Plasmafox It's time for meta-satires then.
The Last Hero of Nostalgaia feels like it would have been neat if the more experience and progress you made, the more fleshed out you yourself would actually become as the character, evolving from a stick figure to a proper 'hero'
Though your image doesnt change, the more you remember, the more special perks you earn.
The Armor and weapons you equip start out pixelated and then fleshes out the way you're talking about when you remember it.
Yeah i thought they were going to do more with that transition effect, from pixelated to more modern graphics. Really liked the whole "remembering" thing in regards to nostalgia though, as in the items/parts of the level become much more pretty as you remember, because thats what usually happens, you remember playing those old as games where everything looked super realistic to you and then you go back, or watch a video and realize that it actually looked like old ass shit lol.
Kinda sounds like the Evoland games.
Isn’t second half being less polished than the first half a staple of the souls serie at this point
That's actually a good point. I can't think of the last one that stayed consistent all the way through.
Sekiro stays solid as hell. If you consider it part of the series that is
I found ds3 consistent all the way through imo.

I’m just super impressed by the art and animations of Moonscars. Whoever was in charge of that should be incredibly proud
Moonscars remind me of dead cells and if i'm not mistaken its on the game pass
For the Monomyth at 35:05, I think that’s meant to be a fairy ring, it symbolizes the presence of fairies and can be either good or bad luck depending on tradition.
Nostalgaia's dev here. Awesome Review! super stoked you found time time to give it a shot, thanks for the attention sir. Very thoughtful and level headed review. Mad respect for that. A few thoughts: It's funny, I think we're suffering from pretty bad brand positioning in this case. Most people hear "satirical soulslike" and think we're satirizing soulslikes, which couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, the project is a love letter to Dark Souls and an attempt to take the narrative systems of that game and more deeply integrate them into gameplay, explicit plot, etc. The "satire" element refers to the project's narrative goals of exploring our cultures obsession with nostalgia. If you go into the project expecting us to go "hahaha dark souls lol ppffftttt" yer gunna have a bad time. Don't get me wrong of course. ultimately that's our bad if it's not clear.
Really great job with the game, absolutely had a blast with it man.
Well, personally, the review hyped me up. I'm gonna buy it tonight. Great work!
Your comment would be more approachable if you specified which game you are the dev of. 👍

Hey Iron Pineapple (and VaatiVidya), thanks for trying out the demo and sharing your thoughts! BTW, an "infinite shield lift trick" (as well as a "double shield space launch") is fixed by now. To anyone interested - feel free to play the demo and share your feedback! We are "sharpening the concept" at the moment and preparing to work on a full game.
Since you enjoy picking up stuff and throwing around stuff so much, did you ever play 'Dark Messiah of Might an Magic'? Very underrated game
whyd you fix the fun part lol
if possible you could implement an option to enable the infinite shield lift. Really funny mechanic
sad the fun is fixed :c
Hell ya, stay on the grind. Don't release something you and your team don't enjoy.
What I really liked about Monomyth was the fact that you found by yourself the cooking mechanics, and not having the game tell you everything. These things make it even more rewarding
Wow. That first game uses "Dark Souls" weapon lore system so much better than dark souls ever has. It actually turns the small tidbits on the weapon into a useful way to explore areas you may have not before as well as learn about the game through your own pace.
One of my favorite things about about this series is the developers of these games commenting on these videos it’s pretty wholesome
and they should. this is like really awesome, free advertising. and since pineapple is honest and has a reputation, i think it really helps. not trusting any ads, but if my favorite metallic fruit recommends something, ill consider it.
I second you!
This is exactly what the indie game social space is about. Mr. Tropical Fruit makes an excellenté video promoting (mostly) small/fledgling developers with some DAMN creative minds and buzz gets generated. Thank you, based fruit man.
Same. Reading the devs' comments after watching the video is like its own content.
I'm never more excited about an upload than when I see one of these pop up on my feed. And you're churning these out like crazy! Definitely feels like Christmas

I love watching you realize that an immersive sim, known for the freedom and options it allows the player within the game, is giving you chances to play your way... exactly as an immersive sim is intended to be played... very excited for Monomyth
The Last Hero of Nostalgaia was a pretty good game - I loved the remembrance feature and wish there were more NPC questlines that relied on that.
hopefully Coatsink continues and improves on the next sequel (I hope) of this game.
Edit: hey they are making a DLC for The Last Hero of Nostalgaia called "The Rise of Evil" I'm super excited for it.
Last Hero of Nostalgaia feels like an honest love-letter to an era of gaming that's passed, but just barely. It's referential but at the same time earnest in making those references. I like it.

monomyth is like an incredible throwback to arx fatalis. With all those little gimmicks you liked, absolutely have to play though arx fatalis. It's basically monomyth but AAA game level of polish.
I don't know if you've played it before but dark messiah of might and magic is a definite must as well (and worth playing a few times for the multiple gameplay styles and endings).
Exactly, that's what I thought, looks almost like Arx Fatalis...
When I saw him baking bread I immediately thought "Oh, the devs definitely played Arx Fatalis"
I came here to mention those two games! If Pine likes Monomyth this much, he would surely fall in love with Arx and DM.
@IronPineapple, if you read this, do look into them! You won't regret it!
No doubt, the bone as an initial weapon and way objects are moved around were already sus but when he started cooking bread I knew it was heavily inspired by Arx, not fromsoft
just little fun bit of trivia dark messiah of might and magic started life as arx fatalis 2 but ubisoft had the developers rebrand it under the might and magic franchise
Monomyth gives an Arx Fatalis vibe, love to see an old classic game mechanic, like the interactions with objects.
Yep, If you pause the video where he says its inspired by Kingsfield, the thing also lists Arx Fatalis as an inspiration. The health and mana bars are straight up copies from Arx Fatalis. Then theres also a whole bunch of little things, like a bone being your first weapon, keys hidden under pillows, the crafting, etc.
So insipred by the video i tried out moonscars, which was an enjoyble experience to me but after a few days i was browsing through steam and got a game recommended to me deeming it similar to moonscars so i got since it was literally 1 dollar bc of the sale it's name is Skautfold: shrouded in sanity
what i can say about it is that it has a really strong atmoshpere of mystery and if anyone likes the sound of a castlevania, bloodborne crossover i'd recommend the game
give it a shot!
This game has been on my to-play list for a long time now, I don't even remember how I first heard about it, but it's nice to see someone else mention it!
@@mwep415 the Skautfold series changes up genres with every game, Usurper is a pretty decent Metroidvania if you're interested
Wow Monomyth looks so cool
I highly recommend looking into Arx Fatalis and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic if you haven't played them already.
Hot Tip, you can completely ignore the story in Arx Fatalis and kill most if not all the NPCS and get instructions on what to do to complete your "actual goal" through the books alone
I almost recommend playing that way because it feels a lot funner than how hand holdy the base game is.
Also this was a pre-alpha Kickstarter demo, so the full game will be even better.
@@aryantzh2028 It would be illegal if he did not say it was a sponsorship. He'd get fined, and YT might kick him off
@@aryantzh2028 I mean he literally said the combat is pretty barebones, which yeah it looked like it, and he also implied he was disappointed there were no stealth mechanics when the enemy didn't react to the bottle he threw.
Otherwise, if he liked it then he liked it. Can't expect him to make stuff about the game that's bad if he didn't think anything in it was bad.
Also it's supposedly an Alpha or Pre-alpha version of the game, so his opinion on it would naturally be less harsh than if it was a completed product.
Since I'm guessing you have a negative opinion of the game, could you name something in the game you didn't like?
Everything else we saw from the video is stuff that many could figure out on their own, highly doubt that he "knows everything about it because the devs paid him".
I'd put your torch and pitchfork away unless you got proof that this is both something the Monomyth devs do and something that Pine would agree to, such as him accepting a similar deal in the past.
In addition, as Ellie said above, it is illegal on CZcams to not disclose a sponsorship deal, and has been for years. Google "CZcams disclosure of sponsorships" and look for the FTC guidelines if you're interested.
I'm sure that some people do it of course, but I don't see why Pine would play with fire like that when he could just acknowledge a sponsorship as he has done many times in the past.
@@aryantzh2028 Or he just... likes it? I feel like if it was a payed promotion he would have mentioned that this was was an early pre-alpha build that's missing a lot of features and polish.

New Eden, the MMO from the last video, has seen a massive surge of new players in the last week or so. They even added a vanity item in honor of Iron Pineapple. It's a cloak with a little Iron Pineapple with sunglasses on it 😂. There's a holiday event going on right now, and a new update coming in a few days. IP, you should definitely do more videos on it, it's insanely fun and they've got some awesome things planned 😁. Not on the team or anything, just someone who really likes the game.
Will just say it's a TERRIBLE time to join in as a new player. The holiday event added christmas elf enemies to the entire zone, which are meant to be grinded for holiday items. Which is neat, gives existing players something to do. But...they're 100x stronger than any other enemy in the zone and will just fucking destroy a newbie. They slow down your movement and do like half of your HP in a single hit. Completely ruins progression and development for a new player
Dumb game design, almost as if they didn't expect new people to join.
@@coolblast3 bruh, you're playing a souls like. If you think it's gonna be a breeze, you've got another thing coming. Yeah, the elves are annoying, but they're easily avoidable, and you learn that very quickly. They kick my ass and I'm max level and have some of the best weapons in the game. I learned to avoid them unless I really want to grind for ornaments. If anything, this is the best time to play because it's gonna teach you that it's not gonna be an easy game and you're gonna have to learn to avoid certain things until you're better prepared. They're only gonna be present for another week or so anyway, nowhere near an issue that should keep you from playing
Just to expand on this, the newest patch that just released have made the elves much more balanced. Making it an even better time to join

The heavy sword spin move at 10:03 is a reference to Nier: Automata. It even has the detail at the end of the move where 2B would buckle under the weight of the sword after spinning it and momentarily struggle to lift it back up
Are you sure about that? Seems just like a standard heavy sword spin to me, but I never played NieR:Automata, so maybe it's really obviously a reference.
@@myrech if there is only 1 single spin move in the game, u would expect it to be a reference to something too
@@myrech Wait, why are you questioning it if you've never played Nier yourself? How would you know if it was or wasn't? Why even bother questioning them then? Just seems weird.
I think you might be mistaken for another gane entirely, because 2B doesnt hold the sword and spin with it, but instead spins it with the NFCS around her effortlessly. As a result, she also doesn't buckle under its weight since she never actually holds the large sword in a horizontal spin move.
@@Davenzoid You may not have seen it because it needs the charge attack chip to be equipped but if you do the charge attack with a heavy sword she spins around at least 3 times and does this little animation at the end

Indeed..
The best feeling an immersive sim can give you is "I can't believe that actually worked!"
I think I have watched every episode of the steam dumpster diving this is such an entertaining series and you are a fun person to watch keep up the great content
These videos are always great in part because pine has such a kind-hearted outlook and is always willing to see the good in something. When something really janky happens, you can hear him hesitate and wait to talk bad about it until he sees more, and he always has something constructive to say even when he didn't have a good time. It's very encouraging to people who go out on a limb and create stuff like this
That's exactly why I love this guy
So I'd like to say that Enter the Gungeon definitely has a mechanic similar to that one in Fabular but it's mostly hidden. The more stuff you unlock and the more runs you do in EtG, the more difficult earlier levels will become. New rooms start generating and enemies that previously showed up later start showing up in earlier chambers. It's so subtle though. You'd never know it without restarting your save file. And while it makes the first few levels that much more difficult, your skill will generally increase a lot faster than the difficulty does. so, I think that "punishment" mechanic can work if done correctly enough. And the fact that EtG doesn't out right tell you it's happening also helps.
Another mildly popular roguelite that does this is a little indie game called The Binding of Isaac (lmao). But in that game it happens very very early on, and it also doesn't control like soap, so that's probably where Iron has a problem with it.
@@Kakodoyo111 the Everything Is Terrible achievement also only unlocks once you beaten Mom's Heart 5 times. A mechanic like this where the game "grows with you" can be good if it's well implemented. It keeps the game at a comfy level of challenge and adds variety to the game for subsequent runs. Basically, before Everything Is Terrible unlocks, the game is holding back most of the tricks it has available to add challenge and variety to a run. You're getting a fraction of the room, boss, and enemy pool to ease you into the game until you've proved you can handle it by finishing a run 5 times.
In the case of Fabular, it sounds like the game is a little too eager to flip this switch and say "you're ready for the REAL game now!"
Slay the Spire, has a similar mechanic based upon how many times you beat a boss on a character. You get like a new ascension level for that character which makes the game progressively harder. Enemies get stronger, encounters are less favorable and map layouts are more punishing. I feel like the game getting harder works best when you have reached milestones in the game. Right now, Fabular increases difficulty based upon how quickly you can clear an area. Which on paper sounds like a great way of doing it, but in execution is very frustrating. They should change it to be either more like Isaac and have it be based on how often the player beats a "wall" type boss. or be like slay the spire and make difficulty increases upon beating the game.
Monomyth looks a lot like Dark messiah of might and magic, where you could pick things and throw them, and interact with the map (you could pick iron and melt it to forge a sword step by step)
If you cant kick, it doesnt complete the Dark Messiah Experience tho!
it's more Arx Fatalis, which is the game Arcane made before Dark Messiah - the bread baking is like a 1:1 repeat from that game.
i love hearing you talk about games like literally any game it doesnt have to be souls like id watch you review i dunno nier or something like that id love to know what you think about games like that
I love how the openings to this series just get better and better in animation quality. It’s super noticeable and awesome to see.

I used to watch you alot in the dark souls pvp days and stumbled into a comment of yours on a vaush vid of all places and I'm glad that reminded me of your gem of a channel.
I love Pine and Vaati's friendship. Any time they're in a video together I laugh the whole way through. I also love Pine's appreciation of the little things in games (You can sit in the chair! That's so fun!).
So glad you tried out Monomyth! As a Kickstarter backer I can't wait for it to come out, the developer has been hard at work to make it memorable!
MAN Hammerfight was a game that I played a lot in my childhood but didn't remember the name, thank you for making me remember this masterpiece!
Yup, picked it up in one of the original Humble Bundles and had a nice cozy wave of nostalgia seeing it brought up!
holy shit the level of effort put into this is insane for it being nearly an hour long, well done
the intro animation of him slapping the keyboard makes me chuckle every single time.
Omg, I love it so much.
you're putting these out like crazy man huge props
i loveeee this series, and it's back and I'm sooo happy. thank you ❤️ please keep making these . ps: your voice is so calming and nice.
im hooked mr pineapple, never change your content, its 2022 and i still watch KOSDFF
love the way monomyth deals with many of the interactions. Baking bread looks amazing.
multiple steps of sensible interactions will *always* beet clicking on an entry in a menue list.
Honestly love the series man, been watching a long time. Don’t tire yourself out homie. Happy holidays
I love how in-depth he got into reviewing the first game, probably made that one steam reviewer's day
It’s been 3 long months since an Iron Pineapple video. My heart longs and my soul aches
Hey mr. Pineapple. I love the poster desing and I think it would also work amazingly as a jigsaw puzzle. With all the nice color contrasts and you would really get to know all the little details when building it. Would be an insta buy for me as a puzzle.
Monomyty has me really impressed and interested in the game. The attention to detail and little "this actually works" moments are magical.
Wasn't expecting another of these so soon. Glad there's some real gems out there that you can bring to light. Can't believe we've had 18 of these already, but your passion for this stuff really shines through your videos.
Man Hammerfight is amazing, it's one of my favorite games from my teenage years. Happy to see it getting some love.
Love your videos you got a new subscriber!!! I love souls type games!!! My favorite games
I always get happy seeing another one of these videos, and it feels like they're coming out more often too! Thank you for doing these!
